    The W

The W in Amsterdam's roof top bar is a floor above the skyline. It's an awesome view of the city. As we all know the W is awesome. Even a trip to the bathroom is an experience.

    Large hotel room and bathroom.

This review is based on my experience in June 2024. When we arrived, we were greeted by Julian at check in. My partner forgot a few things at the previous hotel we stayed at and Julian went above and beyond to help out. Julian was top notch and such a pro. The room and bathroom we had were both large. During our stay, the temperature reached the 80s, so it was warm/hot. Unfortunately, the air conditioning in our room was not great so we requested fans, which helped. Breakfast was subpar. My advice would be to skip the hotel breakfast and eat somewhere nearby. The gym wasn't bad for a hotel gym. During the time we went it was crowded so that impacted our ability but you can never predict when people will be at the gym. The hotel pool is nice but very narrow. Definitely a lounge pool but a nice addition during the hot summer months. We had an appetizer at Mr. Porter, one of the hotel restaurants. We sat on the outside patio which provided a nice overview of the city. The food was good but overpriced. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would come back again. It's in a great location.

Not your typical W hotel and bar. The view from the top bar is very nice at night, drinks are good and expensive which is typical of a W. I stayed at the one in Barcelona and it is a lot nicer. The place is also small because it was created in a historical building of Amsterdam. Not the best W if you want that experience.

First, the hotel is in an amazing location. I decided to walk from Amsterdam Centraal instead of taking a tram and I made it in less than 15 min. And when I did need to take a tram, almost every tram was within a 4 minute walk of the hotel. I almost never had to take the tram though because the proximity made it easy for me to walk wherever I was going. The staff is amazing. Very friendly and professional. They were always willing to help (which I expect) and never seemed to be bothered (which actually does happen sometimes.) I stayed in a canal view bank room on the second floor. Just beautiful. There are limited amounts of these rooms (I think my front desk person said there were just 10) and I felt super lucky to have been upgraded to this gorgeous room. There were large windows that actually open and the room was gorgeously appointed with everything you would need. They even provide a converter (same one as I have) that you can buy if you want to take it with you. The views from the top of the exchange building were spectacular and well worth the freezing cold I had to endure to be up there.

Centrally located in DT Amsterdam, free wifi, walking distance to malls/food, outdoor pool & awesome breakfast buffet (extra $)

We wanted a relaxing stay on our only night in Amsterdam, so we opted for the W Amsterdam. I think The W brand is pretty synonymous for luxury hotels, and caters toward a more younger generation. Our room was €322 euro so ~$482 CAD/night. For a few euro more, you can get a city view for about €355. The King bed was extremely comfy, we got all kinds of toiletries, and the room was relatively spacious given the space in AMS. There are two buildings. We stayed in the Wonderful Exchange opposite of the Bank building. There's also a 5% city fee (total amount), which you pay at the end of your stay. The hotel was conveniently located in the city centre, so getting around places was okay without any data. Two cons - can get loud on weekends and the layout of the hotel was a little confusing (a lot of different glass doors on each floor). While it is a luxury hotel, the above outdoor pool turns into a lounge on the weekends. So, it can get loud as the lounge goers come/go ... we stayed there on a Saturday. We were exhausted after a day of exploring, so we slept pretty well despite the noise (you don't hear the music too clearly, but the beats were noticeable).

It was Saturday night and met up with two work colleagues to hang out in downtown Amsterdam. After wandering around Dam Square, it was just that perfect almost getting to dusk stage, so decided to go to a rooftop bar and check out the sun setting over Amsterdam city from a higher vantage view. A quick search on Yelp for rooftop bars in Amsterdam honestly didn't turn up the W Lounge at the W Hotel. Instead my colleagues found the hotel and it's rooftop bar via google maps and since it was located close to where we standing in the Dam Square, decided to head here. So the hotel is spread out over two buildings, and it was initially confusing as not sure where to go for the Lounge as there weren't any signs or other information as to its location. Therefore ducked into one of the buildings and found our way to the hotel bar, and the very nice bartender told us we were in the wrong building and to go across the street and the lounge was located on the 6th floor. For anyone else looking for the W Lounge, ITS NOT IN THE BANK BUILDING! So while no comment about the actual hotel, this review is about the W rooftop lounge on the 6th floor. Unfortunately it's only got semi decent views, so it didn't live up to our expectations that way. The decor itself was stylish but impractical too. Super low tables and not enough of them. The bathroom was located down these steep stairs two floors down and I reckon could be a major tripping disaster waiting to happen if one was majorly knees-up! Then of the 4 ladies loos, two were not working. The stalls themselves while glittery and done up with gold and shiny reflective black surface, were just super dirty. The fries we ordered took more than 45 minutes (!) and we started joking that the chef had to go out the back and plant the potatoes seed! We'd actually decided to leave and cancelled the order and then it was bought over to us for gratis. The fries were cooked well but over-salted for my taste and the accompanying basil aioli tasted bad in a herb over-powering way. Drinks wise - my colleague said his Mojito was just super weak with too much ice and also more of the lime, and just not enough alcohol. I thought my ginger tea was good but massively overpriced for €6 as had asked them to make it strong, and I reckon for that price, they could have chucked in more ginger pieces. Honestly the cookie that came with the tea was really delicious and tasty and about the only thing I enjoyed/ liked about my experience at the W Lounge. I am in no hurry to come back! Yelp 43/ 2019

As soon as my cab stopped in front, a man immediately came down the stairs to help me with my bag and escort me to the check in area. They asked if I wanted anything to drink and I said of course champagne! They gave me two! I checked in with Lisa who was amazing! She had me pick out a scent for my room. What? I didn't know that existed! Super fun! My room wasn't ready because I had booked late even though it was 3pm but I didn't mind waiting, especially when they gave me that 2nd glass of champagne. When I got my room, Lisa and Fae escorted me to the room to make sure I liked it and it was beautiful. I loved how the light came into the bathroom. On that note the bathtub was so nice I almost fell asleep in it! You receive welcome chocolates in the shape of Amsterdam shoes which were so cute and delicious! I ordered room service as the bar only served snacks and did not want to go to the restaurant by myself as it was really open. I got the Waldorf Astoria Burger which was amazing and so good! I'd go back to this hotel just for that burger itself. The next day I also had the breakfast and was able to get the whole tray of assortments and all the juices and coffee I wanted PLUS another dish! All complimentary with my Hilton Diamond status. I ordered the French toast and everything was delicious! Obviously I couldn't eat it all but was able to take some left to the room for later. I also had a spa appointment while here. Massage was great and the masseuse mentioned to see a physical therapist to help my lower back pain that I was complaining about as she said it was coming from my glutes, legs, knees. I've seen a couple of masseuses in the last two years in the states and one in Canada and NONE had ever even mentioned that that could help. I love this! Very professional staff. The spa also very serene with sauna, jacuzzi, and pool. They have a door to the garden which I'm assuming is beautiful in summer but I was here in February so it was freezing! When I checked out it was with Lisa again and she was great as usual and the guys helped me with my bags again when my uber came. They let me sit in the other room and said they'd let me know when it was here. Very nice. I did not want to leave. Haha!

You Get What You Pay For…read more I bartended for Hard Rock Cafe for 12 years. I love rock and roll, so when I saw this hotel it definitely jumped out at me. I will list the positives first since there are not that many: 1. The dayshift employee (cannot remember his name) was a very nice man. He recommended great vegan restaurants and was super cool. We actually ate at his recommendations for the remainder of our stay. He booked our taxi for us the night before our departure and was very hospitable. 2. The hotel lobby is set up like a bar/lounge with a pool table and it's cozy. 3. I liked the use of musical instruments such as a drum stool for a chair in the room and the drum light fixtures in the room. It adds to the theme of the hotel. 4. It was walking distance to a lot of cool places. Negatives: 1. Amsterdam is an old city with cute old buildings. I get it. We stayed at another hotel which was also an old building (and had a very slow elevator; but still had an elevator). This hotel had nearly 90-degree stairs to carry 50 lb. luggage up four flights of stairs (we called them ladders). I could not imagine anyone with a disability or elderly ever staying there for their safety. Literally, the stairs were about 4 inches wide. I slipped on them. sober. 2. The clients mostly consisted of younger hipsters that we could hear stumbling in at night after drinks and the walls are paper thin. We even heard someone fart in the next room. 3. To drown out the noise of the other clients, my partner and I used a rain app on our smartphone so that we could get some sleep (let me add that it was currently pouring outside). We get a loud knock on our door, waking us at two o'clock in the morning by the nightshift employee, telling us to turn the rain sound down. This woke us up and we were literally trying to book a room at two o'clock in the morning at a different hotel due to his unprofessionalism. It's like, how about telling the clients that are actually making the noise to be more quiet? If you are a young and do not mind the paper-thin walls and the ladder stairs, the disgruntled night shift employee that patrols the halls for noise, and have minimal luggage, then I would recommend this place for the location. Otherwise, stay somewhere else.
