Step back into history at the iconic Amstel Amsterdam Hotel. The Amstel Hotel was built in 1867. It is the definition of luxury and has hosted many dignitaries since it opened. Interesting to explore and see the display cases that share the history of the hotel. The Amstel Hotel was planned by a Jewish Portuguese-Spanish physician, Samuel Sarphati, who was instrumental in city planning and public health. He was especially concerned about the poor hygiene conditions suffered by the poor. To combat poverty, he helped to build a bread factory and initiated a trash collection service. The Amstel Hotel was planned to usher Amsterdam into a new level of sophistication. Originally scheduled as a u-shaped hotel, the plan was never completed due to financial constraints. Although Dr. Sarphati died before the building was opened, it really is a striking masterpiece on the Amstel River. Love the open lobby, beautiful staircases, stunning staircases and high ceilings. It is built like a royal home. Apparently, the Royal Suite has a bathroom with a 14-carat gold faucet that fills the bath in a few minutes, although we did not get that experience. High tea was a great experience and in a beautiful restaurant! Wait staff was excellent and explained each course along with the tea which accompanied the course that were served. The view off the canal adds to the serenity and enjoyment of the meal. By the time the last course arrived we were full so we tried just a couple of sweets. One person in our party smoked in one of 3 rooms we had , we were kicked out of all three hotel rooms A total of 5 people We begged them not to kick us out they said No then we begged them to at least allow us to go quickly see Anne frank house / museum because we were late and we already purchased tickets . Very comfortable and beautiful hotel. The staff are exceptional. Room service (breakfast and dinner). Housekeeping did turndown service which was lovely. The tub is the most. Loved it! Want one of my very own. We had a corner room on the canal. The views were spectacular. The windows open and we got to see a beautiful sunset. The in-room coffee machine and bar are nice. There is no ice machine for self service so you have to ask for it to be delivered. You can easily walk the canal into the heart of the city to experience all of the touristy spots. You can also reserve a private canal ride. Fun fact, the Amstel is the only natural river in the city. The downside is that this place is wicked expensive. For the price, it should have included some wine or breakfast at least. Perhaps the transport to/from the airport should be complimentary. Or even a bar xr The furniture, carpet and drapery in the guest room is dated and should be replaced. The building itself is spectacular. It's worth at least a one night stay. read more

From start to finish the best hotel experience I've ever had, period. As soon as I arrived I was cordially greeted by valet. When I entered the hotel I was immediately welcomed by the reception team who offered me a drink and local snack as I checked in. They were incredibly friendly and made sure every part of my arrival was taken care of; including parking my car and having my luggage brought to my room. I was then personally escorted to my room and shown all of the features and amenities. I absolutely fell in love with the room and view. So much so that I decided to cancel my trip to Brussels the next day and stay an extra night in Amsterdam. The room was spectacular and being able to open the windows and enjoy the picturesque canals was incredible. The hotel concierge provided some great recommendations for eateries and a bike route. I was also able to rent a bike directly from the hotel which was extremely convenient. Seeing the city by bike is a must! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Intercontinental Amstel, and can't wait to return. I want to especially thank the in-house reservations department for making my extended stay possible. They went out of their way to make sure everything was flawless, and for that I am extremely grateful. I don't think that there's anywhere else in the world that can top this hotel experience. We had an exquisite time at the Amstel hotel last week! The property is magical and has the perfect location. The staff went above and beyond to make sure every whim was catered to, especially Duncan, who even had the kitchen make us homemade poffertjes when we couldn't find any locally and had promised some to our son! Usually I don't take the time to write reviews but this experience was truly stellar and we hope others can enjoy the same level of luxury, pleasantness, and fun. Thank you, Amstel! Very nice. Pricey. Did this on points so not quite as painful vs. spending cash. Problem with first room we checked into. After we complained and asked to move all was fine. Nice fitness / relaxation area. The pool isn't suitable for serious swimming. Would stay again. Think older people, rich girls' getaways and high end business clientele. read more

We ate at the terrace for lunch. The terrace is beautiful and worth a visit. We ordered two lobster rolls and one hamburger with nothing on it. The lobster roll bun is stuffed with a mixture of about 80% sweet potato puree and 20% lobster slices on the top. Our hamburger came loaded with toppings we specifically asked for on the side. The hamburger was a mistake in service. The lobster rolls are just straight up deception. Be careful. read more

The hotel is convenient to both the subway and tram lines. The service was superb, my wife loved the room, and the shower was top notch. I also enjoyed the hot tub. From being greeted out front until the end of our stay the service was amazing. I had a junior suite that was overlooked the river and it was beautiful. In October, 2019, I was double charged for a room next to the elevator, as well as $167.00 for incidentals. Took three hours to get the key after being told it would take "just a few minutes." A chunk of plaster fell off the ceiling and hit me in the face. But, the worst part of the stay came in the dining room. The staff, particularly the maitre d, was down right rude. On the other hand, they were kind and attentive to local patrons. The dinner came to $85.00. There was absolutely nothing good about it. I've had better meals at American fast food establishments. The next morning at breakfast a menu was not offered. I requested a second cup of coffee, but it never came. I have visited The Netherlands many times over the past thirty-five years and have always had a memorable experience. In every instance I have found the Dutch to be a phenomenal people. This place is a 5 star. Don't listen to the critical yelpers. You don't get anything like this anywhere else in Europe. The service is better here than anywhere. Yeah it's pricey. But you get what you pay for. If you don't like that remember the Marriott is still open. The food is also great, when it's nice outside you can sit out on the back patio and enjoy the canal view. I can't say enough about the staff. They are great they will help you with anything and make your stay most enjoyable. Don't pass up the opportunity to stay here. Planned trip to Amsterdam and Paris for my wife's birthday. Planned it months in advanced and after extensive review opted for Amstel hotel despite hefty price tag of $700 a night. Looking at recent reviews on way there notice a few bad reviews about renovations which were concerning but brushed them off knowing can't make everyone happy. When we get to hotel noticed immediately the extensive platforms around hotel. Not really caring what it looked like from outside checked and when we got to room our so called canal view was obstructed by the platforms. Immediately went back to checkin and requested a new room but told they did not have any which is hard to believe since the place was empty. So we woke up every morning to the sound of construction and the picture of the 2 gentleman outside our window as posted. Intercontinental should be ashamed of themselves to rent a room like this especially given that price tag. New to the intercontinental membership I will Never stay at one of their resorts ever again. read more

The Amstel is old world luxury. It is an institution being the oldest hotel in Amsterdam and I was lucky enough to stay with them on their 150 year anniversary. In commemoration, they were restoring the building to it's original glory. Other reviews I've read noted being bothered by the construction noise but I never heard anything nor was bothered. Upon arriving, I was offered help with my bags and guided up to my desk for what felt like a more intimate check in experience and then escorted to my room. The attendant explained everything in my room to me and was delighted to offer any help I needed from dinner reservations to sightseeing recommendations. They had placed me on the highest floor with a river view overlooking the city. The hotel isn't in party central but plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance. The room was sizeable with a beautiful view out the window. Summer in Amsterdam is a sight to be seen from above with passing boats, people walking the streets, and at night, dazzling city lights. The bathroom had a large bathtub, separate stand-up shower, and seperate toilet room. I had made plans to wait in line for the Anne Frank House but decided to soak up the views and relax in my hotel room instead. I love the old world traditions that this hotel still partakes in such as room escorting, turn down service, clothes line in bathroom, etc) Room service was speedy and hospitable, but the food seemed a hair above mediocre. This hotel is exactly what I'm looking for from a luxury hotel and will definitely stay again next time I'm in Amsterdam. read more

This review is long over do. My family and I stayed at the hotel in March. The service was excellent and the rooms large and beautifully appointed. If something went wrong, our key didn't work one night, they sent up a basket of fruit. Unfortunately we were checking out of the hotel and heading to the train station to continue our trip to Paris. That was the day of the bombings in Brussels and our train was canceled. We went back to the hotel and they welcomed us royally. They offered to pay for any international phone calls that we may have to make as well as giving us a discounted rate for the extra night we stayed, due to the attacks. The hotel is beautiful, the breakfast in the morning, although small,you can oder off the menu and the food was delicious. This hotel is one that I will go back to, they staff genuinely care and are wonderful! read more
