We spent three nights at the Pulitzer and loved every moment. Being a hotel across numerous canal houses, the hotel has a lot of character, stairs and windy halls. You can access the hotel from either canal, depending on time of day from the Kaizergracht side as you'll be going through the bar or restaurant.
SERVICE:
I emailed the week before with two requests: early check-in and to be on the Kaizergracht canal. Both requests were fulfilled!! We were in our room by 12:30 PM and we were on the Kaizergracht side of the hotel (one set of my great grand parents lived on Kaizergracht between the 1930s-1960s so it was WONDERFUL to imagine my great grandparents looking at a similar view just a little bit down the canal). Staff was always friendly and prompt with each request. The hotel porter promptly brought our luggage to our room when it was available and quickly retrieved it for our departure. With all the stairs, it's nice to have reliable porter service!
ROOM: We stayed in room 362, classified as a "Generous King Canal View Room." It is a spacious European room for two. The king bed does not feel crowded in the room. We appreciated the settee and desk chair so that we each had a place to sit. The view of the canal is fantastic. Open a window to hear the sounds of residents and tourists. IMO the view from 362 is better than the view from the Jansz restaurant because you are up three floors (I took pictures of the exterior so you can see which canal house 362 is a part of). I loved having an electric kettle with no plastic parts to make morning tea. Each day we were given a delicious snack and bottles of water (macrons, chocolates, etc. each afternoon). The room and bathroom were VERY clean. There was nothing tired in the room. I loved the little gift of a Dutch cycling patch kit :-) After Amsterdam we embarked on a 6 day cycling trip between Amsterdam and Bruges. Additional sweet details: providing a bag to be used at the grocery/pharmacy (I knew to bring my own, but I loved that they had a bag in the room) as well as an umbrella (again we knew to bring rain gear).
BATHROOM: large walk in shower, the toilet was a bit high for me. I'm 5'4" and found that my feet could not touch the ground and was on my the tips of my toes. Spacious shower, nice toiletries (I didn't use much, but my husband liked them, although they are from NYC which is a little disappointing - we'd prefer something Dutch). Very clean. Replenished with towels as needed. Magnifying makeup mirror and no-fog main mirror.
BREAKFAST @ JANSZ: We enjoyed our breakfasts in the Jansz each morning. Warm breakfast is included, this morning so many guests were concerned about ordering a warm breakfast in addition to eating from the buffet - I can't count the number of times I heard servers say it's included. The warm breakfasts are fantastic and INCLUDED! I had the eggs brioche and eggs Benedict. My husband had the omelette each day. The buffet includes breads, cheese, meats, yogurt and such. We did not eat from the buffet because the warm breakfast portions are large. Coke light (Diet Coke) is available at breakfast for those that are addicted, like my husband...
TEA @ PAUSE: By the hotel lobby is a light cafe, Pause. I met with women from the American Women's Club and we enjoyed tea the first morning we arrived. Service was great. Tea was wonderful. One thing to note: it is a greenhouse-like space and it got very warm while we were seated there - wear layers that can be removed.
ROOM SERVICE: The last night we were in Amsterdam, I went out to take nighttime pictures of the canals. By the time I got back to our room we were both exhausted & hungry so we ordered room service. Room service was quick, the food was still warm, and it was delicious. I had a croque monsieur, which was NOT greasy. My husband had a
COMMON AREAS: There are many nooks and crannies where you can sit and find some quiet. There is a beautiful courtyard that has one section available with heaters and blankets.
LOCATION: Located in the Jordaan neighborhood we never had problems with noise or drunk people at night. Staying on the Kaizergracht side GORGEOUS sunlight filled our room each morning (we were there when there was oddly little rain and the blackout curtains are effective until you remove them). It is an easy walk all the prime spots. If you don't want to walk, you can easily hop on the tram, ask for a taxi or use your phone to get an Uber.
TIP: Go to Marqt Wolvenstraat a short walk away to pick up healthy/organic salads, sandwiches, and more that you can enjoy from the warmth and comfort of your room or picnic in the Pulitzer's courtyard.
Absolutely nothing to complain about. We loved every minute and will go back. read more
