We stopped by Vy Banh Mi yesterday after being out on Casco Bay for some field testing work. We were hungry and eager to get something quick and (hopefully) delicious before heading back to the office. One the office classics is going to Bahn Appetit for lunch on Fridays and when we saw the Vy Banh Mi food truck parked on the Eastern Promenade, we all got excited to try something new -- compare and contrast against an office favorite. The staff was friendly and the service was lightning fast. Getting back to the office -- the first thing we realized was that the bread appeared to be nearly stale. We made an absolute mess trying to eat the sandwich -- bread flaking off literally everywhere. The contents were a bit of a mixed bag -- I thought the flavor of the lemongrass beef was good. The veggies didn't look very fresh and I think think that the ratio of the banh mi's contents were off quite a bit. It gave me the feeling that there wasn't much attention to detail in food preparation that day. read more

Stopped here for lunch yesterday for their cajun LOBSTER banh mi!!! This truck is one of my favorite things about summer and this sandwich is my favorite special. They were also doing a crispy pork belly special and looking back I'm not sure why I didn't think to add them to my sandwich. I can't for the life of me see how this place has such a low rating. The service is always friendly and kind, they'll happy fix and mistakes made and the location is BEAUTIFUL! Bring a blanket, have a picnic, enjoy the view and the food. read more

I absolutely loved the vermicelli noodle bowl with mixed greens, pickled veggie and lemongrass beef. However, they got multiple aspects of my husband and my order wrong so I have to give them 3 stars. My husband also wanted a vermicelli noodle bowl but with fried chicken and fish sauce. Unfortunately, he ended up with a rice bowl and they swapped the sauces. The sauces are on the side so less of a big deal, but still a mixup. The freshness is unmatched. Incredibly delicious. We also split a thai iced tea boba tea which was very sweet but good. I'd like to visit again but I'm not sure my husband would join me. read more

I ordered a beef lemongrass banh mi at Eastern Prim food truck . The bread was dry and hard, it scratched the entirety of my mouth . I'm guessing they have the buns sitting in warmer all day and got dried out . It was inedible. I would prefer a cold soft bun over a hot brittle and dry bun . read more

Food had me thinking I was back in San Diego! Cute little food truck in a pod of trucks that all seem to work well together. It is a great truck for Vietnamese food and the service is great. It is a bit over priced IMO, but I am ok with that. Bring a blanket or hope to get a table. Also windy. read more

My wife and I just got back from sampling a bunch of different food trucks in the Eastern Prom, and Vy Banh Mi was the star of the show. We split a lemongrass beef bahn mi, and it just blew me away. The perfection of the bread is the first thing you notice when you unwrap your sandwich. It has a flaky, crispy exterior and a tender, soft interior. They pile on plenty of pickled veggies, flavorful beef, and delicious sauce. I will be back soon to try another bahn me and a vermicelli bowl! read more

Wow! Great sandwiches! This had turned into my white whale of sandwiches. Constantly eluding me at every half hearted turn. I was in luck last week when my daughters daycare was closed and I needed her to burn off some energy so away we went to east end playground. After we had played at the playground and then going down the hill to the beach and then going back up the hill (mind you carrying her and a all of her stuff including a small potty) I saw it. Waiting at the top of the hill. It was 11:30 and a line was already forming. So we waited. The sandwiches where large about 10-12 inches. The fillings all sorts. From the classic cold cuts(with pate) which myself and daughter loved to teriyaki chicken that the wife liked. The star of this is the bread. A great crunch, but still easily pulls away. They really have perfected the bread. The rest of the sandwich was good as well with pickled vegetables of carrots and hearty amount of cilantro. The price was decent between 7-15 dollar range depending on how crazy you went with the sandwich options. And the Vietnamese ice coffee was perfect. Great banh mi! Check them out! read more

I tried Vy Banh Mi for the first time; the food truck was parked at the Eastern Prom and super busy. Judging by the line I figured it must be good. Well, the food is okay. My egg rolls (which I waited ~30 minutes to order and receive) were a bit overdone for my preference and not super flavorful. The Thai tea, however, is bomb!!! If I were smart, I would've ordered two instead of one today. I will definitely stop to get a Thai iced tea whenever I see them around. Probably will skip the food, though. VEGANS: There is egg in their bread. VEGETARIANS/SHELLFISH ALLERGIES: The tofu is marinated in a teriyaki-oyster sauce. I was bummed to wait in line for nearly a half hour to find out that the only things I could get was either a salad bowl (with pretty limited ingredients) or a banh mi with just the veggies (mayo, cukes, cilantro, carrots, daikon, jalapeno) that all the other options - at nearly the same price - come with. Food is still delicious my issues are: the sandwich has significantly shrunken in size since my first visit months ago. With that said, their onslaught of popularity, lines and expansion of menu I am not surprised just frustrated. Their bread is definitely at least 1 inch smaller, which makes a sizes able difference. I've eaten a lot of banh mi, that is not the standard size bread I got this weekend. I am so glad they are so successful, so busy that they hired people to work, have a huge following, and lines. However, with that they need to figure out a more realistic and sustainable way to get the food out. If this was my lunch break I would have asked for a refund and walked away. Waited nearly 25 minutes for cold cut sandwiches is just a very long time and without a organized way to retrieve product. We're told what number... but as someone who has a goldfish memory. Being # 53 and hearing them yell out #44 is pretty disheartening as a customer that just wanted to grab and go. And while waiting so long I proceeded to forget what number I was, and had to Hail Mary and guess when they yelled into the 50's. read more

I've been meaning to check out Vy Ba'nh Mi food truck for some time now after following them on Instagram. Going to Portland with my kid to get her second Covid vaccine was the perfect excuse to drive up to the Eastern Prom on a sunny Friday afternoon and order the classic Ba'nh Mi - pork and ham coldcuts, along with jalapeños, cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon, with pate and homemade mayo smeared on the bottom. From first bite to last, the crusty exterior of the home made baguette held up well to all of the fillings, which complemented one another well. I reluctantly shared a few bites with my daughter, but the sandwich was so large I was still stuffed after finishing the sandwich. All in all a very satisfying meal. If the food and experience is poor, I usually give restaurants/food places three chances before never returning. Vy Banh Mi food truck has reached a third bad experience. Banh Mi sandwiches are my favorite food, by far. I'm a huge fan and regular patron of a certain other Banh Mi place on the East End (I won't name them on this review, but it's a simple google search) so my expectations to beat were already high going in to trying Vy. I tried their food the first week they opened and had a TERRIBLE experience. The chicken banh mi was cold, the meat was flavorless, the bread was FAR too crunchy (borderline burnt without looking burnt), and if there was a sauce it wasn't present enough because it was the driest sandwich I'm probably ever had, and I waited about 30 minutes in the freezing cold and was 4th in line. Also ordered a boba tea and the boba was the consistency of mush, they held no shape. I was appalled but chalked it up to it being their first week and trying to work out kinks. Strike one. I tried them a second time when they were parked on the east end this summer and had practically the same experience. This time there was a minuscule amount of season on the chicken, tasted like it was just pepper, and the chicken was warm this time, but there was still little to no sauce and the bread was just as crispy as ever... and even smaller. After one of the first swallows, a piece of the hard, crispy bread scraped the back of my throat and I had a sore throat because of it for the following two weeks! Second strike. The third strike was ordering lunch from them again last week and all my past issues still hadn't been resolved. Dry, flavorless, bread too crispy, etc. Maybe I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and maybe their bowls are delicious, but the fact their Banh Mi's have been nearly inedible three items is an issue for me. I hate to leave poor reviews, but I'd rather order from the other Banh Mi place on the east end and thoroughly enjoy my meal there instead. read more

Not happy with this place. We decided to try it after all the hype. I rarely find food trucks where you get your money's worth. This place was not one of them. The BBQ pork was not BBQ. It was pork butt thrown in a crock pot and was stringy with no crispy ends like you get other places. I'm Vietnamese. Grew up eating banh mi all my life. Have been to their food truck twice. The first time was so delicious and filling but the lemongrass banh mi I had today was really lack luster. The beef was dry, hardly seasoned, there was no pickled daikon (what?!?) and it was definitely missing some sauce (beef banh mi are traditionally served with a sweet nuoc mam). Also, $15 (after tip) for a deficient, dry, tasteless banh mi was absolutely NOT worth it. Don't know if I'll try them again to be honest. read more

I love banh mi sandwiches, and grabbed one from Vy's food truck on a recent trip through Portland. Pros: very decent authentic classic banh mi, super good special smoked brisket banh mi, giant portions. Got the basics right--crusty French bread, plenty of veggies and cilantro, good proportions of the right cold cuts. Cons: could have been a lot spicier for my tastes, they should probably offer different levels for different palates. The 2-meal size portions (for one sandwich) are generous, but I think the quality of the bread suffers. A touch doughy. Overall, a great experience for a mellow lunch down by the water if it's too hot or you just don't feel like wandering the streets anymore. (N.b I live in Portsmouth NH which has a decent banh mi place too--Nikki's on Islington--and came here via NYC and Oakland, CA where I had my first banh mi and nothing will ever compare. If there is a long line, dont bother. Im sure if you are there at the right moment it would be good but... I Showed up around 7pm, and anticipated 10-20 min wait so my actual 45 minute wait was awful. The worst part, when I ordered no one said "hey its going t be 30+ min." I would have made the decision to not wait, but they took my money and kept backing up their people in the kitchen by continuing to take orders without letting people know how long they were going to wait. Then when I got my sandwich the bread was days old, and hard around all the sides.. not toasted hard, just stale. The fried chicken was good, though not enough sweet chili sauce for me to think it was even "Vietnamese." But the pickled veggies and the homemade mayo were bomb.
