    Grabbing food from the truck
    Jason L.

We booked Ironclad to cater our wedding in Yarmouth, ME. We really couldn't have asked for a better experience. The service from the clad lads was incredibly friendly, and they brought along order trackers as well so folks could walk around and socialize, and then be notified when their food was ready instead of having to stand around and wait. We definitely appreciated this and a lot of our guests did as well. The food was also fantastic. We had been to the truck in Portland before to sample the menu, so we knew what to expect, but they really hit a home run with everyone. With vegetarian and gluten free options as well, anyone in attendance was able to get something, and we heard nothing but compliments about how awesome the tacos were. (I am full team chop cheese for life, picture is me just over the moon to get my own) They were also super easy to work with in regards to booking and menu communication, and we had no issues whatsoever on the day-of. Overall, I would absolutely recommend Ironclad. I'll be stopping by wherever they are parked when I drive through Portland from now on, and I would fully support booking them for your own private events as well.

If you want to find some of the best tacos in town, look no further. IronClads has been such a phenomenal addition to Portland's vibrant food truck community. I've had their tacos and slaw a couple of times and they NEVER disappoint. The Thrashville Chicken is so delicious and it has a spicy kick to it. The Cubano taco reminds me of a Miami Cuban sandwich -- the flavors are just insane, and I mean that in a good way. Check out their Instagram @ironcladeats to see where they are located each week. We've tried them at Congress Square Park and Belleflower Brewery, but I know they go all over town. Also -- the people behind the truck are some of the nicest humans.

The ultimate taco truck: Iron Clad Eats in Portland.

At the end of our Portland trip, we headed to Belleflower Brewing, and needed some food before the drive home to NY. The Ironclad Eats truck was parked in front and proved the perfect thing to accompany our Belleflower beers. The tacos were superb. My wife chose the Chop Cheese, so good I never got a taste. I selected the River Bottom Nightmare Beef (Mississippi-style beef with melted jack cheese and blueberry gojuchang) and it was marvelous, complex and satisfying. On the side, we had refreshing blueberry corn salad. Dude who runs the truck was also SUPER friendly. And they apparently are into Motorhead. ;) So, try these tacos!!!

So glad I learned about this wonderful food truck through Yelp! I am a sucker for street tacos, and the more innovative, the better. Ironclad Eats has it dialed in with fresh homemade ingredients and creative combos. I tried the Iron Cubano and the River Bottom Nightmare Beef, whereas my hubby went classic with 3 of the Chop Cheese tacos. We inhaled the deliciousness while trying to observe the intermingling of flavors, but sometimes you just have to experience the joy, lick your fingers, and call it a win!

Cubano, bean suppah, and 2 river bottom beef. Pickles and corn/blueberry salad on the side. All great!!!

Fantastic tacos!!! The river bottom beef was our absolute favorite, but the bean suppah and Cuban were very close seconds. The bourbon pickles were DELICIOUS! I appreciate their unique offerings - and he adds different tacos to the menu (which may become regulars, like he did with the cubano!) 99% of the menu is also gluten friendly, which is great for folx avoiding it. The owner was super friendly, service was a bit slow but we had a long ass line in front of us, so they were definitely working as fast as they could (since each and ever taco is made to order!) I will definitely seek them out again. Follow them on Instagram to get their weekly schedule!

Fantastic tacos. Unique and delicious. The two guys running the truck were awesome. They were extremely friendly and easy going. If you're visiting Lone Pine Brewing, take a walk behind the building to Goodfire Brewing right behind them and have some amazing tacos while you're at it!

Mr. Tuna is one of three Open Table Exclusive restaurants in Maine, so most every local Chase Reserve card member uses their twice yearly $150 credit here, which explains my visit. The people watching from the outdoor tables on Middle Street must be some of the best in the city. You could easily sip a glass of sake (the dreamy clouds was...dreamy) while eating a toro maki roll and marveling at the tourists waiting in a two hour Eventide line. But we ordered the lemongrass fried tofu salad, salmon toro sashimi and 3 maki rolls, including the green crab special. Everything tasted fresh and excellent with only Yosaku in the same league for Old Port sushi. Of course Yosaku is much more authentic Japanese than Mr. Tuna, though Mr. Tuna is more fun. Like most trendy Portland restaurants, lunch for two with a couple drinks each is $200 all in (get that Chase card!). Still, this is a huge, inventive menu with a great bar program and is one of the surprisingly better summertime outdoor seating options.

The braised and crisped pork belly (Buta No Kakuni) here was some of the best I have ever had. One of those "Holy sh*t" bites where you have to put your head down to process what just assaulted your taste buds. Perfectly rendered fat, good meat to fat ratio, super crisp outer exterior but not too much where it gets tough, the caramelized soy glaze to top it all off.. It was just so good. Also, getting a bite with the kewpie, pickled onion, and pork belly all in one shot is chefs kiss. It doesn't even need all the supporting characters, but it makes it that much better. Slightly overshadowed by the pork, I also got an onigiri. It was filled with chicken and chives. Overall I thought the onigiri was decent. Chicken and chive wouldn't be my top filling but it was tasty nonetheless and still worth trying! I like that they griddle it slightly to help it hold its structure instead of using a piece of nori. Good, old fashioned, fun. It's good for kids. It's good for drunken twenty-somethings outside of Fore Street bars. It's good for tourists. It's good for those of us with a sweet tooth who need a fix but don't want to spend a lot of money. And it's good for those of us who like the idea of s'mores, but maybe don't want to purchase all the ingredients to make them ourselves, because... let's face it... there's always half a box of graham crackers leftover (and seriously, what does anyone ever do with those?). It's run by a staff of fun-loving folks. And they've got fire. So, basically, it appeals perfectly to most people's inner child. There's only two things that prevent me from giving The Marshmallow Cart full marks: 1. Marshmallows are typically made with gelatin. Gelatin is typically made from animal by-products (think bones, skin, and tendons). I don't know (but would update this in a heartbeat if I did) if The Marshmallow Cart makes their marshmallow's with gelatin or if they're vegetarian-friendly and use guar gum, agar agar, or pectin. That being said, as a vegetarian, I'm not exactly rushing to get back here for this particular product. 2. THE WAFFLES ARE DELICIOUS. They sooooooo remind me of my Spanish gofres, but... The Marshmallow Cart doesn't have icing for them. I think the only options are marshmallow or nutella. Allow me a Veruca Salt moment, if you will: I WANT ICING. AND I WANT IT NOW. I would come out of my way for this if it was available. Maybe I should just start carrying my own bottle of it around in my purse? The point... if you like marshmallows (and don't have a plant-based diet), s'mores, waffles (sans icing), fire, and smiling... The Marshmallow Cart will not disappoint.

My friend had a salad to start, that had a lot of different flavors to it -- a mix of fruit and greens and fennel and... and... For my taste, it was a little too-too. But it was fresh as everything else we had was. Server was super nice and accommodating - we chose to sit outside, and it started raining. Heads up -- only a few of the outdoor tables fit under the glass awning, and the covering doesn't cover completely. So I'd definitely recommend going when there's a lower chance of rain. One other thing I'll add around ambiance is that the area for dishes/plates is right by the back door, and the sprayers are loud. Made it a bit difficult to hear at times but I imagine it's not an issue (or is less of an issue) if you sit inside. But for the pizza itself? Go.

Technically it's a food truck with a giant outdoor seating area, but the bar is the highlight. With Truly on tap in addition to frozen cocktails, this is more a drinking venue than eating. The crowd was upscale 20's and 30's, basically replacing Blyth & Burrow as the place to be seen. There is no better outdoor drinking venue in Portland at this time, though after further visits here, it's a bit of a free-for-all and not the most Covid friendly. At least it's entirely outdoors. So why four stars? The food didn't wow me. You're paying for the view, basically. While the chickpea fries were good, an order of maybe eight of them for $17 was not. It's an average, pricey menu. The traditional Evo is far better. Still, forget Porthole, PLC or the best outdoor venues from previous summers. In this weird and crazy 2020 summer, Evo-X is the place to be, trust me.

The problem is the complete lack of organization or anyone in charge. At least on our visit on a weeknight, it was a free-for-all. I'm not one to dole out advice on here, as there are usually extenuating circumstances and I figure they know best, and likewise during this pandemic, I place just as much blame on customers not being very bright. So, a simple change: They need a host. There was a lady sort of doing that, but all she really was doing was making sure people were wearing masks (better than nothing!). After that, it's seat yourself with no guidance, so lots of picnic tables with 1 person sitting there (we stood at a barrel for lack of seats), and probably worst of all, the bar stool seating facing the water was totally unregulated. You have to space that out or give patrons some clear restrictions. People were just sitting down right next to other strangers with zero distance which just doesn't fly for me these days. Get a host, have them take names and phone numbers, and have them seat people. Maybe they do that on weekends, or at least I hope so. Beyond that the bartender was super nice, but with how interesting the food is, hoped for a little more on cocktails and beer selection. We had planned on dinner but ended up staying for one drink, one snack and getting the hell out of there. I get the laid-back, marina vibe they're going for but in these times is way too laid-back, i.e. sketch. Maybe we'll give it another try in the fall when there's less people around.
