    Small subarashii don
    Jennifer N.

I was sooo excited about this place because the chef was a JB semi-finalist and the branding really sold me. Very underwhelming and expensive, like others have mentioned. We ordered a small subarashii don and a couple of maki rolls. I did not realize how small their small really was, but safe to say, we were still hungry after. I felt like everything was just ~okay~ and the fish did not taste that fresh to me. I was definitely expecting more from this place being so close to the water, and especially for the price you're paying.

I want to start off by noting I am not a sushi fan. My husband is so I went in knowing I'd have a hard time with finding something that I would like. We started with the edemame with the spicy salt. Oh my gosh!! The salt they make needs to be bottled and sold! It was so good!! The waitress said it was a mix of garlic and maybe dried wasabi. It was so good with a punch of wasabi that would sneak up and get you. We ordered a kale salad and it was very good too. My husband had a few different hand rolls and said each one was good except for the special tuna one. He did not like that one at all. I got the all dressed up tuna and it was pretty good. I love the crunch from the crispy garlic. It did have a sneaky punch from the jalapeños which was unexpected but good.

Laid-back sushi restaurant with really creative flavor combos and great cocktails. Mr. Tuna is worth the extra steps as it's just a bit outside of the main downtown area near the end of middle street. All of the food was really good and pretty fairly priced, but the Tuna de Tigre should not be missed. What we ate: - Tuna de Tigre (must get) - Blackbeard's Delight (very good) - Halibut (unique) - Tuna Gochujang (simple but really good) - Tuna Mango (good, not great) - Vanilla/Miso Caramel Ice Cream Toastie (must get)

PLEASE NOTE: This review is for the mobile sushi bar/food cart. It seems that the reviews and photos here are for both the Mr Tuna restaurant (83 Middle St) AND the Mr Tuna mobile sushi bar/food cart (location varies, but usually somewhere in Portland: Eastern Prom, Thompson's Point, etc.). I think that's very confusing and misleading; they are two different experiences, locations, and menus so they should be two different listings. After being open for nearly ten years, I finally got to try the hand rolls. Meh. Nearly $10 for two bites of mostly an unpleasantly tough nori wrapper? I don't get the hype. I appreciated that there were three vegan options (sweet potato described as "the usual flavors", teriyaki mushroom described as "sweet and familiar", and veggie described as "interesting and umami" from the person working the cart), but... I'm all set. (With the mobile food bar anyway, I'm still very interested in trying the actual restaurant especially with a couple of people recently shouting out their spicy crunchy avocado maki and avocado salad.)

We had an amazing sushi lunch here. It lived up to my expectations and more. We had the multiple maki rolls, sashimi dishes, and the kale salad. Everything was fresh and delicious. The different flavor combos were refreshing and delectable. I highly recommend if you're in the area and looking for quality sushi. This restaurant will definitely not disappoint. We will definitely come again!

Underwhelming and mediocre. I was excited to try because the reviews were so good but very disappointed. Ordered 3 hand rolls to go. Upon opening, they looked pretty measly and sad. The only notable one was the spicy scallop and crab, with good flavors. The aburi toro and spicy salmon were very meh. Texture of fish was lacking and had minimal flavors. Spicy tuna maki felt like grocery store sushi. Considering this was Portland I was expecting high quality and fresh fish. This definitely did not feel like that.

Bless for Mr Tuna, probably the best sushi I have had in New England. It's surprising to me how this little store in Portland ME can outcompete the sushi options in major cities like Boston. The price point is appropriate for the quality of food you receive. The dining experience is also lovely as the store is warm and inviting. Our server was attentive, helpful with ordering, and overall I left feeling more than satisfied.

Finally got to dine in! I've always gotten Mr. Tuna for take out (even got Ubereats to my delivery room). The last time I did get Mr. Tuna was about a year ago. I was a little nervous, seeing the recent reviews but the quality and experience of my meal exceeded my expectations. The different tuna cuts were melt in your mouth and the amount of rice was just enough. We sat at the bar which was cozy and it wasn't too busy for an early Saturday. My all time favorite menu item is the potato salad with added ikura! The creaminess of the potato and the saltiness from the ikura go perfectly together. Get the spicy aburi don maki! You won't regret it. There's happy hour and sometimes they'll do a random lunch special. I suggest following their instagram page (mr.tuna_maine). Really great sushi. Definitely on the pricier side since you are paying for the quality, as well as creativity, but worth it!

We arrived at Mr. Tuna on a Saturday at about 4:00/4:15 as they do not take reservations and we wanted to beat the dinner rush. There are probably only five or six tables, and they were all full when we arrived, so we happily sat at the bar. It's a casual atmosphere, brightly lit and super clean. Service was prompt, attentive, and poised without being intrusive. It's lovely to go to a place that is properly staffed, which is a difficult metric to reach in the post-COVID era. This was without exaggeration the best sushi I have ever had. I am vegan, and my husband is not, but we both had plenty to choose from. Anything I wasn't sure about, I Googled or asked our server. I started with the avocado salad, which is served with granola, pickled onions, and a light dressing that I didn't even realize was there until I got to the bottom of the oyster shell-shaped bowl. This was one of the most perfectly paired salads I've had. The creaminess and nutty flavor of the avocado against the sweet, crunchy granola with the tangy, moist/crunchy pickled onions nearly made me delirious with delight. I ordered two maki rolls: the Sweet Potato Roll and the Spicy Crunchy Avocado Roll with Sriracha Sauce. Out of habit, I picked up the interesting-shaped glass bottle containing the soy sauce and poured a little into a condiment bowl, but wisely decided to taste the maki rolls before dipping them into it. They didn't need it at all. However, I felt guilty for pouring soy sauce out, and then my husband informed me that they make their own, so of course I had to try it. It is nothing like what you buy in the stores. It wasn't the least bit salty, and it was a light enhancement to already perfect maki rolls. My husband had the tuna special sashimi which included, I believe, four different types of tuna. This was an unusual choice for him, but it had received such high marks with reviewers that he wanted to try it, and it did not disappoint him. I can't speak in more detail than that, but he did order two additional maki rolls: Spicy Crunchy Shrimp and Spicy Scallop & Crab. He said they were the best sushi he has ever had. We live just a little over two hours away, but I can see us driving back to enjoy dinner here again.

This was the place on my Portland bucket list and it lived up to the hype. I got the Mr. Tuna in a sushi burrito and it was everything I could want and MORE. The fish was nice and fresh and everything complimented each other well. The service was impeccable. I'd recommend this spot if you're ever in the area!

The service, the food, the thoughtful details all came into play. Sat at the sushi bar with my 14 yr old son and ate well and loved every bite. Our first experience eating in Portland surely did not disappoint!!! We will be back soon

Super fresh and creative sushi! The sushi burrito was jam packed with flavor. The lobster hand roll was my favorite - it melted in your mouth. The ice cream toastie was a sweet finish, although I wish it had more miso caramel flavor or maybe serve it as a dipping sauce on the side? The soy sauce was some of the sweetest I've had, which was kinda weird but not bad. The drinks were decent but seemed weak and small for the price. Intimate place (we sat at the sushi counter) with fine service. Worth checking out if you like sushi and are in Portland.

    Melody M.

Alex was a great waitress, attentive and friendly (but I did get another guest's bill initially). I had the miso soup and three hand rolls. Everything was fresh and tasty, as expected. I do agree with other reviews, for the price and hype, portions of fish in hand rolls could be a bit larger, but the flavors were good. I heard other patrons mention the restaurant will post specials and off menu items on their instagram occasionally too.

Good, old fashioned, fun. It's good for kids. It's good for drunken twenty-somethings outside of Fore Street bars. It's good for tourists. It's good for those of us with a sweet tooth who need a fix but don't want to spend a lot of money. And it's good for those of us who like the idea of s'mores, but maybe don't want to purchase all the ingredients to make them ourselves, because... let's face it... there's always half a box of graham crackers leftover (and seriously, what does anyone ever do with those?). It's run by a staff of fun-loving folks. And they've got fire. So, basically, it appeals perfectly to most people's inner child. There's only two things that prevent me from giving The Marshmallow Cart full marks: 1. Marshmallows are typically made with gelatin. Gelatin is typically made from animal by-products (think bones, skin, and tendons). I don't know (but would update this in a heartbeat if I did) if The Marshmallow Cart makes their marshmallow's with gelatin or if they're vegetarian-friendly and use guar gum, agar agar, or pectin. That being said, as a vegetarian, I'm not exactly rushing to get back here for this particular product. 2. THE WAFFLES ARE DELICIOUS. They sooooooo remind me of my Spanish gofres, but... The Marshmallow Cart doesn't have icing for them. I think the only options are marshmallow or nutella. Allow me a Veruca Salt moment, if you will: I WANT ICING. AND I WANT IT NOW. I would come out of my way for this if it was available. Maybe I should just start carrying my own bottle of it around in my purse? The point... if you like marshmallows (and don't have a plant-based diet), s'mores, waffles (sans icing), fire, and smiling... The Marshmallow Cart will not disappoint.

Heads up -- only a few of the outdoor tables fit under the glass awning, and the covering doesn't cover completely. So I'd definitely recommend going when there's a lower chance of rain. One other thing I'll add around ambiance is that the area for dishes/plates is right by the back door, and the sprayers are loud. The crowd was upscale 20's and 30's, basically replacing Blyth & Burrow as the place to be seen. There is no better outdoor drinking venue in Portland at this time, though after further visits here, it's a bit of a free-for-all and not the most Covid friendly. At least it's entirely outdoors. So why four stars? The food didn't wow me. You're paying for the view, basically. While the chickpea fries were good, an order of maybe eight of them for $17 was not. It's an average, pricey menu. The problem is the complete lack of organization or anyone in charge. At least on our visit on a weeknight, it was a free-for-all. I'm not one to dole out advice on here, as there are usually extenuating circumstances and I figure they know best, and likewise during this pandemic, I place just as much blame on customers not being very bright. So, a simple change: They need a host. There was a lady sort of doing that, but all she really was doing was making sure people were wearing masks (better than nothing!). After that, it's seat yourself with no guidance, so lots of picnic tables with 1 person sitting there (we stood at a barrel for lack of seats), and probably worst of all, the bar stool seating facing the water was totally unregulated. You have to space that out or give patrons some clear restrictions. People were just sitting down right next to other strangers with zero distance which just doesn't fly for me these days. Get a host, have them take names and phone numbers, and have them seat people. Maybe they do that on weekends, or at least I hope so. Beyond that the bartender was super nice, but with how interesting the food is, hoped for a little more on cocktails and beer selection. We had planned on dinner but ended up staying for one drink, one snack and getting the hell out of there. I get the laid-back, marina vibe they're going for but in these times is way too laid-back, i.e. sketch. Maybe we'll give it another try in the fall when there's less people around.
