I love it here. I love the modern designed interior. I love how quickly/efficiently/kind the staff are. I love the lunch menu more than words can say. The sushi sashimi special for 2 at $60 is a steal: you get 15 pieces of sashimi, a 9-piece spicy tuna roll and a rainbow roll on top of that. No, they don't skimp on the sashimi. Salmon, tuna, yellowtail. Oh, and yes, you get the miso soup and salad on top of that. I'm always surprised when I go in to find that every seat is not filled at this spot. I think the location is a disadvantage - it's tucked into the corner of a strip mall in South Portland, so it really only gets local patrons. If this was in downtown Portland though, it would be popping. read more

We've been regular customers at Kume Sushi Lounge in South Portland since they opened, and over the last 2 to 3 months the restaurant has noticeably gone downhill. One of the biggest changes has been the complete turnover of the staff. All of the original people who made the place welcoming and enjoyable seem to be gone, and the difference has absolutely shown in both the service and overall experience. The food quality has become inconsistent and, at times, marginal compared to what originally brought us in. We've also dealt with repeated order mistakes, inattentive service, and an overall lack of attention to detail during several recent visits. Everyone understands that restaurants can have an off night, but this has become a pattern rather than an exception. What was especially disappointing was that we took the time to privately contact ownership about these concerns and never received any response at all. We weren't looking for compensation or special treatment, just acknowledgment and some indication that customer feedback mattered. Kume had a lot of promise when it first opened, which makes this frustrating to write. Unfortunately, based on our recent experiences, the quality control, consistency, and customer service are no longer close to where they once were. read more

Super nice interior in this relatively new sushi (and more) spot in South Portland. We ordered a couple of rolls and a few different appetizers. It took a long time for our food to come out, like maybe about 25 minutes before the first app arrived, but everything was fresh and tasty. We tried Kim's for the very first time. Lots of upgrade to when it was ASIA! The ambiance was fun & friendly. It was very busy bit got much busier after we were seated. Hard to decide what to eat because their menu is like nothing I've ever seen. So many interesting things to order that it makes things exciting to try. This was a super fun place to come! Especially for lunch. We sat at the bar but there is plentiful seating. They have so much variety of food items. The service was great. We got to try drinks, an app, and a meal! They had so many options. Every drink you could think of. We got to witness the employees eating a "family meal" which was great. Plenty of parking here, as Kume shares a large lot with neighboring businesses in the plaza. The interior has a very modern, clean, light colored design. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our drinks and foods were delivered quite promptly. The rolls were beautiful plated and my chicken dish was a generous size. Service here is top notch. Everyone seems to have a job and works collectively, rather than just by table assignment. Empty dishes are removed immediately, waters are filled often, and you are checked in on frequently. My son and I had a great lunch here and will be returning. He especially enjoyed taking pictures with the large red sumo wrestler that's affixed to the sidewalk near the entrance. read more

So delicious, cannot believe it wasn't packed when we went at 6:30pm on a Saturday night. Everything was quick and delicious and inside is just so cute you can tell they really put some work into the space. Tried the clear soup, the dinosaur egg (fun to get once but a bit too much fried for my liking), and duck buns - will be back for the lobster Rangoon Had the Hawaii roll - probably top 10 rolls I've ever had the pineapple was such a unique touch and made the roll so good. Pink Lady roll was amazing as well and balance the slight sweetness of the Hawaii roll. I usually do not like avocado in my sushi but almost everything we ordered had avocado in it and I wouldn't hesitate to get it again. I'm very happy Kume finally opened up their Mill Creek location. It's a really good addition to the neighborhood which I think was lacking before. It replaces a Chinese restaurant formerly at this location called Asia, which had been on a decline for a long while I think. This Kume is much, much smaller than the locations in Topsham and Augusta. I'm not sure there were actually even any hibachi tables. They do have a long sushi bar, several booths and small tables, and one large table, as well as one semi private room at the front behind a curtain. The atmosphere is very, very pleasant. Service is great too. I visited twice on my own, once with my girlfriend, and once with my daughter, and every time I enjoyed my meal. When I went with my daughter, she ordered pineapple juice, but decided she did not like it. The waiter brought apple juice for us instead free of charge. read more

Our first time to Kume and we were definitely impressed! Don't let the fact that this restaurant is in a strip mall turn you away. Just look for the big red sumo wrestler out front! We walked into a beautifully decorated and bright space. The decor is lovely. There is a huge lit up bar to the left, which we chose to sit at. My husband and I each had a salad. Normally salads at sushi restaurants are tiny, but this one was bigger than normal. Fresh vegetables, and a great ginger dressing. My husband had the seaweed salad, which he also enjoyed. We ordered sushi which came on a lovely tray. I would have to say that this is some of the best sushi in the area! We had the dynamite roll, spicy tuna roll, beauty and the beast, and king of king roll. All were excellent. Highlight was the king of king roll. This was very large and rich, but delicious with real king crab, avocado, and cheese, topped with more avocado and king crab. The server was very friendly, and while there were a lot of people in there, our meals came out quickly. We also got to watch college football on the big TVs over the bar. I cannot say enough great things about Kume, but the highlights are: the quality of the food, especially the fish, perfect service, great value, and a killer lunch menu with great deals. Everything taste very fresh, delicious and impressive amount of care is taken in the presentation of the food. We've visited for lunch and dinner a number of times, and once we tried the sushi dinner for two, which is a little spendy, but a huge amount of quality sushi and we felt it was an incredible value. The decor features simple lines, a Japanese inspired feel, and a mix of deep booths and table seating. I whole heartedly recommend Kume to everyone! read more

First time here on a Sunday afternoon. First thought, the place is very attractive. Definitely a professional handled the design. Food was very good. Our sashimi plate was a visual knockout and very fresh and tasty. The two rolls we had were also delish. There is a full bar and drinks were very reasonable. A couple of suggestions to earn that 5th star: lighting is a little too bright. Dimming would definitely add to the ambiance. Secondly, service, though pleasant, seemed a little rushed. The restaurant was hardly busy, so why the rush to pay the bill. I would have had another glass of wine. But wasn't given the opportunity. Will definitely go back. When they first opened the food and service was great and it's 5 minutes from home so an easy place to get to with plenty of parking. I went back in January 2025 and the service was terrible. Very scaled down compared when they first opened. Took forever to get my food and they didn't bring everything I ordered. I went back tonight thinking perhaps they just had an off night and it was even worse. Only one waitperson was working and she was very poorly trained. When I arrived I stood at the entrance and was completely ignored until I asked for a table. It was not at all crowded and still it took a good 10 minutes before my order was taken. Food was randomly served and I had to keep asking when items I ordered would be served. The food was only lukewarm so I had to ask for replacements- who wants to eat cold white rice? The waitperson never once asked if I needed anything and although she appeared to be scurrying around, she was not actually helping anyone. The food was mediocre and not inexpensive.
