Sushi obviously isn't inexpensive, but compared to many places in Portland it's quite reasonably priced if you order non-speciality rolls. The eel avocado roll is especially good and I have also enjoyed the fatty tuna and yellowtail/scallion. I think what makes this place special though is that it appears the owner is heavily involved in the day-to-day operations. I believe he works as a sushi chef sometimes and I've also passed by late at night and seen him cleaning the glass on the front door. The waiters seem genuinely happy to be working there and seem to be friends with each other. They also seem to have strong intra-restaurant culture such as greeting people who walk in the door with the same greetings that I heard when I was in Japan and saying "corner" every time they're rounding a corner with food. The patio outside is delightful. There's a waterfall and the space has the feel of a Japanese tea garden. Really special place. It can feel a bit buzzy/sceney on the weekends, for better or worse. Definitely a special restaurant worth going to.

Every sushi roll was fresh and packed with different fish. We loved the option to sit at the traditional Japanese tables on the floor, it reminded me of when in Japan. It took a bit of time for the sushi to come in, but we did order quite a bit (so worth it) They had a painting on the wall featuring the sushi chefs from 2020 and they told us that the same sushi chefs are still working here! It was very heart warming.

I was a little nervous, since I've just started dabbling into eating raw fish, but I was SO impressed! The roll tasted so fresh, and the toro melted in your mouth. The truffle oil was also a nice touch and added great flavor. I also loved that Miyake had many different types of more unique rolls, unlike the basic rolls you see at a classic sushi restaurant. If you're in a sushi mood or just a great dinner spot, I'd highly recommend Miyake!

The sushi was good quality, but the rolls were on the small side. The miso soup was delicious, and a generous portion. The pork dumplings were crisp on the outside and the pork filling was flavorful. The fried ice cream was classic, and done just right, crisp fried dough on the outside, sweet vanilla ice cream in the inside. Delicious. Haven't had that in so long! The interior could use a little freshening up. For example, the plastic seat of my chair was ripped, the carpet has seen better days. The bathroom was clean. I would go back again.

Given that my wife and I are from Los Angeles, we have always been craving great sushi on the East Coast so we decided to go with the nine course Omakase at Izakaya Minato. It was such a special experience, ranging from the bar seating which allow us to see everything that was happening behind the scenes in the kitchen, to the incredible service from the multitude of servers who served us throughout the night, to the incredible food for a great price. I could see why Izakaya Minato got the credit it deserved as a James Beard finalist this year. Make sure you stop and give it a try!

Delightful, truly authentic Japanese dining in Portland…read more We were visiting for an overnight mini vacation and stopped in for a nice lunch before heading back home. What caught my eye the chalkboard listing fish that one sees at high-end sushi restaurants. Fresh fish flown in from all over but not ignoring the amazing local farm to table items (or in this case, net to table). Our dishes were prepared expertly and amazingly good. I haven't had a Japanese dining experience like this since we were in New York. The wait staff are absolutely amazing. The ladies there were chatting with our kids, teaching and correcting their Japanese, and clearly tickled by the conversation. The decor is nicely subdued, but comfortable. This would be a great place for a first date, or to celebrate a nice event like a new job or an outing with someone special. Highly recommended.

Maybe the lights were a little harshly bright, but otherwise a fine place to dine. We didn't get too many things, as we stopped in more for a finisher for the evening than full meal (we'd come from a party with small foods). We ordered a shoyu ramen and a dragon roll. Interesting note on the dragon roll, it has a sweet potato interior. This led to a distinct flavor from other rolls I've had in the past, and a smooshier texture, but a good roll nonetheless. The ramen was mostly a delight. Sumptuous broth, the egg was not too hard nor soft, and almost all the ingredients were perfect. Which I usually avoid that word because it's too subjective, but it seems to fit here. Major exception is the chashu pork. It was overcooked to the extreme. No other word for it, these dried out circles of meat were thick and chewy, and soaking them in the broth couldn't save them. Sad. Otherwise, some of the best ramen I've had since leaving Japan. The only other note I'd have is I just wanted some tea, and had to order a weird tea concoction to get it. Sometimes you'd just like an oolong tea, nothing fancy. I recommend this restaurant, overall, and hope you enjoy it too.

Mr. Tuna is one of three Open Table Exclusive restaurants in Maine, so most every local Chase Reserve card member uses their twice yearly $150 credit here, which explains my visit. The people watching from the outdoor tables on Middle Street must be some of the best in the city. You could easily sip a glass of sake (the dreamy clouds was...dreamy) while eating a toro maki roll and marveling at the tourists waiting in a two hour Eventide line. But we ordered the lemongrass fried tofu salad, salmon toro sashimi and 3 maki rolls, including the green crab special. Everything tasted fresh and excellent with only Yosaku in the same league for Old Port sushi. Of course Yosaku is much more authentic Japanese than Mr. Tuna, though Mr. Tuna is more fun. Like most trendy Portland restaurants, lunch for two with a couple drinks each is $200 all in (get that Chase card!). Enjoyed the lobster roll + bento. The toro don was not great except for the rice and the ikura. The meal was around $100 - which is pricey for what it was - small roll, potato salad, kale salad, edamame and a toro don - which is called toro don but the description has akame/ikura, maybe call it something else, like tuna don. All the sashimi was fibrous. Based on value and the quality - I would not return.
