Maine bluefins sashimi
Jamie A.

Yummy! Absolutely scrumptious and made my dinner dreams tonight come true~ met the staff and the owner of the food truck today~ they gave us great description of their fish and what to expect~ the bluefin sashimi special was worth the price. This was all pricy~ but worth the chase~ the lobster on crispy rice special today was phenomenal. Maine and lobsters, can't go wrong because it's all been fresh tasting~ sushi burrito is a bit dry so have your sauce on hand between bites~ Today's stop of the food truck was Belleflower brewery and it wasn't far. Make sure to check out the instagram page before heading over to whenever they have listed on Yelp. The Yelp listed area was just a street down from the actual stop they took today at Belleflower, so it wasn't too bad to chase down. It was clean cute, and chill~

Great to have this food option at local breweries, and the chef Alex Herzog come a long ways from the small food cart inside of Austin Street. A creative spin on sushi with items like the Sushi Burger (Spicy Tuna * Mixed Crab * Avocado * Fried Rice Buns * Wasabi Mayo drizzle * Jalapeños), Poke Nachos (Seasoned Poké Tuna * Wonton Chips * Sweet Onions * Scallions * Jalapeño Lime Aioli), and the Sushi Tower (California Crab * Spicy Tuna * Avocado * Tempura Crunchies * Spicy Mayo * Eel Sauce) keeps it interesting, and keeping the menu small means he can perfect his craft and keep people happy with the menu items they've come to expect. I had the sushi burger for the first time for its novelty, but it is challenging to eat, and the rice "buns" overpower the sushi fillings. I've had the sushi nachos and sushi tower previously and these were more to my liking and certainly easier to eat! Definitely a 5 star experience in the past. Will come back and order my old favs.

The flavor and freshness of Great Wave Sushi is amazing! I'm completely in awe. I've seen reviews and posts about them for months but only got to them at Absolem in Winthrop. But have now gone twice and believe me, I will go find them from now on, not just wait for them to be more convenient to me. It's that good!

Recommended: Definitely, for fresh and creative sushi. Overall: An excellent choice for enjoying top-quality sushi, especially when visiting Austin Street Brewing. Snapshot: Food: 5/5 Drink: NA Vibe: NA Service: 4/5 Value: 5/5 ‍‍ Family-Friendly: NA Highlights: Perfect For: Pairing delicious, fresh sushi with craft beer Don't Miss: The sushi burrito and the Maki rolls Bonus Tip: Order your food before grabbing a drink, as preparation can take some time All The Details: At Austin Street Brewing, we had the pleasure of trying Great Wave Sushi Food Truck, and it was a delightful experience. The sushi was not only fresh but also creatively crafted. My husband was particularly impressed with their sushi burrito and the Maki rolls. Considering the quality, the pricing was surprisingly good, offering great value. The combination of tasty sushi and excellent beer from Austin Street, enjoyed on a beautiful day at their patio tables, was simply heavenly. One thing to note is that they tend to sell out quickly. We arrived midday and found that several menu items were already gone - a testament to their popularity and the deliciousness of their offerings. A pro tip: place your food order before getting drinks, as the sushi preparation takes a little while. Everything was rolled to perfection, and the staff was friendly and efficient. I am definitely planning to track down this food truck again the next time I'm in Portland.

Instagram picture perfect presentation, but the flavors and portions disappointed. The freshness of the fish was undeniable. I hope to try this spot again for a regular sushi roll. I got the tuna nachos and the sushi burger.

Pop at Austin Street brewery--beer and sushi!!!

Y'all--I'm pretty sure the sushi burger changed my life. Unfortunately have zero pictures of it because it didn't last long in my hands before making it into my mouth. Soooo delicious, it inspired us to go back for seconds and try the tuna tartare tower, which was equally if not even MORE delicious! This is pop-up sushi can usually be found at Austin St. Brewery on Saturdays, but if you're unsure--check out his Instagram where he posts his locations for the weekends. Austin Street also has amazing beers, so you get a lil 2-for-1 action on trying some of the best bites and drinks in Portland! My favorite thing about Austin Street is they are one of the only breweries that gives Pale Ales the recognition they deserve.

AMAZING!!! We got the sushi burger and the poke nachos and I can't express enough how DELICIOUS they are. The nachos are sooo crispy and pungent with tuna pieces. The sushi burger that has the crispy rice and tuna in between. It is THE BEST sushi I have had in southern maine. My mouth is watering for the next time I'll be here.

Always a pleasure to support Great Wave Sushi. Kind folks, quality product, above and beyond customer service, creative & fresh dishes.

I love Asian food, but don't eat fish. However this was a beautiful and tasty snack. The sauce is phenomenal. They were crunchy and delicious. The service was super friendly. Loved everything

Vegetable futomaki.

Vegetarian sushi isn't difficult; it's just mostly uninspired. I know what to expect every single time: a hint of avocado, some seedy cucumber, maybe a shred of two of carrot, bish, bash, bosh. I *love* sushi; I eat it a lot (and I can also eat a lot of it), but I never finish a roll feeling like I've eaten anything other than just a generic veggie sushi roll that could have come from pretty much anywhere - does that make sense? Anyway, Alex at Great Wave Sushi, thanks for permanently ruining veggie sushi for me. I HAD NO IDEA IT COULD BE THAT GOOD. Three things: 1. Alex is a humble, quiet man but his passion for what he does and how he does it is unparalleled. He *wants* to feed you and to feed you well (that includes you, vegan and gluten-free friends). 2. I've only had the Vegetable Futomaki Roll, and it might be the only thing I ever end up eating from GWS because it's the. best. sushi. I've. ever. had. First of all: the roll is EEEEEEEEENOORRRRRRMOUUUUSSS. It's definitely the equivalent of two rolls from anywhere else. There's *heaps* of avocado, cucumber, lettuce, and tempura crunchie bits inside; I was like, "there's no way he's going to be able to roll all that up" but he expertly did. I wonder if next time he'd be willing to drizzle some spicy mayo and sprinkle some sesame seeds on it. Is this weird? 3. He's super popular and he's currently a one person show. SO YOU ARE GONNA WAIT FOR YOUR ORDER (unless you can get there the first hour he opens up on a weekday; a perk from working from home, I guess). But for this food cart/truck/mobile eatery? It's totally worth it.

The infamous sushi burger!
Shay W.

Where to begin with Great Wave Sushi? Oh yeah...the SUSHI BURGER. The portion size is massive enough for two, but you're definitely not going to want to share it because the flavor is so good. It's spicy tuna, crab, a mound of avocado, and spicy jalapeño piled between two fried rice patties. The ONLY way to eat it is at home where no one can see you making a fool of yourself as you attempt to chomp into this bad boy. And it's saucy....so trust me, just eat it at home outside the view of the public eye. Everything Alex offers is incredible; he has "sushi-fied" the classic American staples: a sushi burger, sushi pizza, sushi nachos. You will not be disappointed with anything! You can find him at Austin St. Brewery most days - just make sure you get there early because he does sell out fast, and he's a one-man operation so you will have to wait a little bit to get your food. Luckily, Alex is so kind and chill, and it's 100% worth it.

Sushi burger in the front, spicy tuna crispys in the back. SO good!
Alyssa N.

I love Great Wave SO MUCH!!!!! He creates exciting dishes with tons of flavor and texture. The sushi burger is on another level. It's humongous, first of all, and the crispy rice buns are so good! The fish inside is tasty and I love the eel sauce and mayo he serves with it. The sushi tower is also fabulous! The toppings are similar to what you'll find in the sushi burger, but you'll get a softer texture from the rice, since it is regular sushi rice and not the crispy rice. My absolute favorite item he has is the spicy tuna crispys!!! It uses the same crispy rice from the burger, but in sushi sized bites. They're topped with spicy tuna, a sweet garlic ponzu sauce and a thin slice of Serrano pepper. I could legitimately eat 3-4 orders of this and not get sick of it! He's often at Austin St Brewery on the weekends - so do yourself a favor and order one of everything!

Phenomenal sushi!! The nachos and spicy tuna bowl were both equally incredible. Highly recommend checking out their food truck schedule and making the visit

I think the wine selections are also great prices without having a happy hour price tag so i went for a nice white to pair with my rolls. It was hard deciding which maki rolls to get, everything sounded amazing and the servers were great with answering any questions. I ended up going with the halibut, salmon teriyaki, and tuna mango. i wanted to try a variety and i think the prices are great for the quality and fun options you can get. The rolls are a great size so one person can definitely eat 3 of the regular size maki's like i did. I really like the bar seating so i could watch the magic happen while i relaxed and ate my rolls. I'm usually not a soy sauce person but there's is phenomenal and i'm not sure how they are doing that! It was cool to see Mr Tuna (the chef who started this place) behind the bar at noontime working! I always think that goes to show how passionate this place is with great leadership. Everything was so fresh and tasty. To end the server told me about the special toastie they had and i knew i had to try it. This was sourdough ice cream with a maple pecan crumble and wow!!!!!! I can't believe i almost skipped dessert here because that would have been a huge regret. It was so good with the crunchy sweet hawaiian roll and then the cold ice cream inside. I definitely recommend getting whatever special they have that day since it seems to be a fun spin on there original toasty. I actually can't wait to come back and try some other rolls, as it seems like they are always keeping up with what's fresh and what the chef wants to be creative with!

We rolled in and got a seat right away, which was awesome. The staff were friendly and helpful! As for the food - I'll start with the food stuff. The Tuna de Tigre was REALLY good!! And the ice cream toastie, which had been highly recommended, was very good and unique! As for the disappointing - my main complaint was with the sushi rolls... I was bothered that the sushi was essentially standard roll, one that I can get at other sushi restaurants, with a squirt of a sauce for an extra like 5 or 6 dollars. I always very disappointed with the tuna nachos. They sounded and looked appealing but lacked anything that really made me want to order them again. All in all, I liked it - but it left something to be desired in my opinion. I think going forward, Mr. Tuna will be reserved for Tuna de Tigre and Ice Cream Toasties (and the Handrolls form their food trucks at concerts and festivals)!

Good, old fashioned, fun. It's good for kids. It's good for drunken twenty-somethings outside of Fore Street bars. It's good for tourists. It's good for those of us with a sweet tooth who need a fix but don't want to spend a lot of money. And it's good for those of us who like the idea of s'mores, but maybe don't want to purchase all the ingredients to make them ourselves, because... let's face it... there's always half a box of graham crackers leftover (and seriously, what does anyone ever do with those?). It's run by a staff of fun-loving folks. And they've got fire. So, basically, it appeals perfectly to most people's inner child. There's only two things that prevent me from giving The Marshmallow Cart full marks: 1. Marshmallows are typically made with gelatin. Gelatin is typically made from animal by-products (think bones, skin, and tendons). I don't know (but would update this in a heartbeat if I did) if The Marshmallow Cart makes their marshmallow's with gelatin or if they're vegetarian-friendly and use guar gum, agar agar, or pectin. That being said, as a vegetarian, I'm not exactly rushing to get back here for this particular product. 2. THE WAFFLES ARE DELICIOUS. They sooooooo remind me of my Spanish gofres, but... The Marshmallow Cart doesn't have icing for them. I think the only options are marshmallow or nutella. Allow me a Veruca Salt moment, if you will: I WANT ICING. AND I WANT IT NOW. I would come out of my way for this if it was available. Maybe I should just start carrying my own bottle of it around in my purse? The point... if you like marshmallows (and don't have a plant-based diet), s'mores, waffles (sans icing), fire, and smiling... The Marshmallow Cart will not disappoint.

My friend had a salad to start, that had a lot of different flavors to it -- a mix of fruit and greens and fennel and... and... For my taste, it was a little too-too. But it was fresh as everything else we had was. Server was super nice and accommodating - we chose to sit outside, and it started raining. Heads up -- only a few of the outdoor tables fit under the glass awning, and the covering doesn't cover completely. So I'd definitely recommend going when there's a lower chance of rain. One other thing I'll add around ambiance is that the area for dishes/plates is right by the back door, and the sprayers are loud. Made it a bit difficult to hear at times but I imagine it's not an issue (or is less of an issue) if you sit inside. But for the pizza itself? Go.

Technically it's a food truck with a giant outdoor seating area, but the bar is the highlight. With Truly on tap in addition to frozen cocktails, this is more a drinking venue than eating. The crowd was upscale 20's and 30's, basically replacing Blyth & Burrow as the place to be seen. There is no better outdoor drinking venue in Portland at this time, though after further visits here, it's a bit of a free-for-all and not the most Covid friendly. At least it's entirely outdoors. So why four stars? The food didn't wow me. You're paying for the view, basically. While the chickpea fries were good, an order of maybe eight of them for $17 was not. It's an average, pricey menu. The traditional Evo is far better. Still, forget Porthole, PLC or the best outdoor venues from previous summers. In this weird and crazy 2020 summer, Evo-X is the place to be, trust me.

The problem is the complete lack of organization or anyone in charge. At least on our visit on a weeknight, it was a free-for-all. I'm not one to dole out advice on here, as there are usually extenuating circumstances and I figure they know best, and likewise during this pandemic, I place just as much blame on customers not being very bright. So, a simple change: They need a host. There was a lady sort of doing that, but all she really was doing was making sure people were wearing masks (better than nothing!). After that, it's seat yourself with no guidance, so lots of picnic tables with 1 person sitting there (we stood at a barrel for lack of seats), and probably worst of all, the bar stool seating facing the water was totally unregulated. You have to space that out or give patrons some clear restrictions. People were just sitting down right next to other strangers with zero distance which just doesn't fly for me these days. Get a host, have them take names and phone numbers, and have them seat people. Maybe they do that on weekends, or at least I hope so. Beyond that the bartender was super nice, but with how interesting the food is, hoped for a little more on cocktails and beer selection. We had planned on dinner but ended up staying for one drink, one snack and getting the hell out of there. I get the laid-back, marina vibe they're going for but in these times is way too laid-back, i.e. sketch. Maybe we'll give it another try in the fall when there's less people around.

The staff communicated upfront that it was going to take a bit longer than normal because they had just replenished their oil and it needed to get back to the desired temp. This issue was compounded by a few orders coming in at the same time. All is said, I appreciated the heads up and in fairness, the wait was still less than 15 minutes (enough time for a refreshment). In the end, the sandwiches were delicious, the buns had integrity (deliciously soft but strong enough to hold up while eating), and the toppings/sauces were out of this world!
