great view. terrible management. my first time here was great. the view was great, my cocktail was amazing. the staff was friendly. because my first experience was so great i detoured a second time to have the amazing cocktail before heading to dinner at another restaurant. fail. they'd completely changed what made the cocktail special and i ended up paying $16 for tequila + pineapple juice. so disappointed. i gave vu another try on an extremely hot night in the city and i'd hoped to catch a breeze and a view. i'd planned to sip wine to be on the safe side and not take any chances with the cocktail menu. well, we didn't even make it upstairs. my friend was told that she wasn't allowed because they didn't allow flip flops. except she wasn't wearing flip flops. she was wearing fringe zara jeweled slides (see picture below) on a 100 degree chicago summer night. and get this, as we stood there debating fashion with the door attendants at least 3 people wearing actual flip flops were allowed up and at least 1 walked past us while exiting. i asked to speak to the manager, who we were told was unavailable and at which point the doorman decided to allow us entry. as we were about to step into to elevator the manager stepped out and waived us out of the elevator at which point he immediately became confrontational and refused to have a conversation with us about the dress code and why certain people were allowed in wearing actual flip flops. he then demanded that we leave. i've never been treated so poorly. he was arrogant and definitely on a power trip as a result of his role. relax, vu is by no means the burj khalifa. i'd heard through the grapevine that this place tends to show certain biases, but because the staff had previously been so pleasant i couldn't fathom it. especially coming from someone in management. although it's nice to have a southside rooftop, this kind of treatment isn't justifiable. chicago has tons of other rooftops. i live in the neighborhood, but the area attracts quite a few tourists. whoever is really in charge here should reconsider their management staff and how their business and our city is being represented. these antics are hostile, unwelcoming and overall lack professionalism and hospitality. they don't contribute to giving visitors of this great city the impression that chicago is "my kinda town." jose needs to be removed from his position immediately. his poor attitude might be better suited at bottled blonde, if they'll have him. disgusting. read more

This is probably my first rooftop bar we went to in Chicago. I traveled from San Francisco for a work event (True Value Show) and our expectations were simply to hang out and a have a great time... The customer service we received from the whole staff was phenomenal. We were served by our bartender named Carlos aka "Los" who went above and beyond. He was local so he was very knowledgeable when it came to suggestions for delicious restaurants, bars, and other fun activities for someone like us visiting Chicago for the first time. Not only he made sure that we were all having a great night, he also made us some signature drinks that weren't even on the menu. GREAT SERVICE OVERALL! With the amazing views along with the excellent food, I'd highly recommend this bar for anyone looking for an amazing time. The breakfast service here is sub par. There was only a few people there and we waited 25 minutes for someone to come by to take our order, had to ask for drinks 3x until we got them ourselves and they never followed up. The service should be reviewed. Especially for charging $19. read more

I'd give this place 0 stars. We live 2 min walking distance from this place. We called and asked if there was a dress code and were told no by Erin. We showed up and were not allowed in the building because one of the people in our party was wearing gym shoes (black) and khaki shorts. Right in front of us, a guy was allowed in with running shoes and a baseball hat on. I called and spoke to Trey who said he was the manager and he was going to walk down but when I told the security guard this, he said he was the manager. He was also being extremely rude to people trying to enter. This might be why you have bad reviews. Also if you have a dress code, you might wanna take the photos down on Yelp with people in running shoes and backpacks and shorts. It's misleading. And train your staff. Not that I'll ever be coming back or recommending this place to anyone. read more

We tried to move our reservation 30 minutes sooner and were told they were fully booked, however when we arrived there were literally dozens of tables available. Despite this, we were sat at a small table with no view next to the walk way. We asked if we could be moved and were told no, then watched as walk ins were placed at table after table with views. We mentioned this to the manager before leaving and he cut us off, arguing about what we'd experienced. The staff are snooty, entitled, and think accomodating guests is beneath them. A group of my friends ( ALL AFRICAN AMERICAN) made reservation at VU rooftop for a birthday party. We got there around 6:15pm. Around 7pm-7:15pm, a server or manager brought the bill out saying "Thank you for your service but you have to go" ... at that point we were confuse because we still had an hour left in our reservation. The manager told us that our server told us to stop Vaping. FIRST that was lie because our server didn't tell us anything but kept serving our drinks. However two WHITE girls sitting next to us were smoking their vapes as well and never said anything to them. This place is prejudice and they will never seek my business any longer. read more

It's 2022 so of course the 1st thing I did was go online to book a reservation but after a certain amount of people (more than 13) you have to call to book as it stated online. So it's very unfortunate that #1 the restaurant does not have the phone as well as the staff worker in a more quiet area to take calls/reservations, it's also unfortunate that the staff worker does not have sense to move to a different areas when on the phone with a customer whom is trying to provide your establishment business!! If you have a dress code it should be public posted and available on your website. It is of poor taste for a person to find out about the dress code at the entrance. A white lady walks out the door with similar shoes on as me, I am told because she is staying at the hotel she is allowed up with the shoes on. If there is a dress code it should be followed by all customers. If she is at the hotel in the venue she has easier access to return to her room to change shoes as opposed to someone who isn't staying at the hotel. If the Bar is open to none Hotel guest the same rules should apply! The door man was also rude and lack any customer service skills. This "rule" seems very suspect. I would also like to give a special acknowledgement to Andrew, our waiter. He was funny, professional, and really gave five star customer service. Not only will we be back but requesting his section. I went here in a warm Friday around 7pm. I had to wait in line for about 30 mins to get up, not a big deal. The ambience is beautiful. It easy to tell management put effort and thought into how the place was curated and decorated. My issue here is service. It was so hard just to get a glass of wine! After we finally got our 1 st round, the server got an attitude when trying to order another round and snapped at my friend. We went and found another bar outside. This place is understaffed and the service is severely lacking, ur staff is over worked. I'm in no rush to go back. The food was tasty tho! read more

Here for a reception dinner following the Society for Neuroscience conference. They had a great selection of wines and the food was great! We had Nashville hot chicken sliders (my favorite!!) as appetizers, crab salad sliders, sesame glazed tofu, and salmon tartare as appetizers which were so tasty! For dinner there was roasted veggies, beef, and red quinoa salad. But the best by far was the views and outdoor firepits and our bartender and servers, Felix, Jasmine and Andrew. Just the right amount of "kick". Tables were spaced appropriately apart and the hostess and our waitress were friendly and always available, but never overbearing. For dinner, we tried the burger, which was huge and flavorful and one of the flatbreads (the short rib one), which was very good. LOVED the view!! And the food runner, Jaime, came around to make sure we were OK and provided a few laughs. The prices were more than reasonable and the portion sizes were very big. This place is terrible at the least. We waited a good 30 minutes to even go up because "we were on the list". The view is beautiful, but that's about it. It's a ghetto crowd, they allow guys in with pants sagging half way down their butt. That's very low class. The food is also terrible. I didn't know it could exist but my friend and I had the worst ceviche of our lives at this place. Then when we wanted to leave the system somehow shut down so we couldn't even pay and get out of there. When we wanted to just take a look at the rooftop upon exiting the security guard was extremely rude, and wouldn't even allow that. We weren't trying to stay. This place wants to be cool and classy but falls super short. Don't waste your time here, just go somewhere else!! read more

A few coworkers and I had a great time at this place! We arrived around 7 and all of the tables were "reserved", but we put our name in and were quickly seated. The service was fast and the food was really really good. We got the flat bread as a starter which was very delicious and well-portioned. I got the pork belly bao buns which I very much enjoyed. The cocktails were also really tasty (and strong!), albeit quite expensive. This place is incredibly spacious, with a vast amount of both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating also has fireplaces for the colder months. We sat indoors and didn't have much of a view, but I will definitely be returning when it warms up! read more

Overall this spot is nice, but certainly has some things to work on. While the views and ambiance are amazing the service is pretty poor to say the least. My small party of 2 waited nearly 15-20 min. to get serviced.... at the bar! What was most concerning is that there were 4 bartenders not managing the bar properly. They had no rhythm in how they operated or functioned, it was rather frustrating. However once one of the bartenders finally got to us it was fine. When my dad came to visit we went and hung out here with local family and friends he doesn't get to see much. Had a great time with an attentive waitress who kept our glasses full as we lounged around and caught up for hours (and took pics of the gorgeous view). Despite this, several of my guests arriving between 9 - 10pm weren't able to get it because the staff felt that since they were having a "slow night." I didn't feel snazzy enough to be here (there were people in suits with tails and top hats and stuff...probably from a wedding), but even not feeling as snazzy as others, I still felt very comfortable. What a great find at the top of the Hilton properties next to McCormick Place. I only had the pleasure of eating breakfast here because I was staying at the hotel. I wish I would have found this the night before as I definitely would have gone for a drink. But alas I only got to have the most amazing breakfast sandwich ever! It was short rib, egg and a bunch of other heavenly goodness. And the breakfast potatoes that accompanied it were perfectly crisp on the outside and moist and flavorful on the inside with just the right amount of spice. The service was top notch too. And the space where breakfast is served is light and airy. It was a foggy and cloudy day, but yet the room felt bright and open. Definitely will try to be back! read more

We ordered a mojito and a lemon drop martini - both were sent back. We ordered a rum and coke and a cider, the rum and coke arrived but was whiskey and coke.
