After all of these years, I finally made it to Voodoo. They did not let me down. I came on Halloween because they were open as we were walking down the street. They had a live band going when we came in. I ordered the mango doughnut and the Hubba Bubba doughnut. Both were so good. I was supposed to go back to try two more but I was being lazy. The only "bad" thing about the Austin location is it's in a super sketchy part of downtown. And when I say sketchy, I mean, there was a homeless guy sitting outside the door with his hat laying on the ground with some dollars and change in it and, right when we exited, some dude grabbed the homeless guy's hat and took off! So yeah a homeless guy got robbed right in front of Voodoo Doughnut. My buddy and I checked on him and gave him a few dollars. Myself and my husband spent a few hours in Austin and decided to stop at this doughnut store. They had a gentleman stationed outside for crowd control but fortunately for us, there wasn't a huge line outside. We were able to step right in and into a line of about 20 people. We waited for about 15 minutes before we were assisted. The place is very eclectic inside. They have a picture of all the donuts on the wall so that you can be ready with your decision by the time you reach the front counter. I decided on an apple fritter, cinnamon donut, and carmel covered donut I believe. I really enjoy apple fritters but this one felt really sweet to me. But I didn't let that stop me. They say that at times, the line is wrapped around the corner and the wait is ridiculous. While enjoying a long weekend in Austin, I braved the line to check out the hype around Voodoo Doughnut. After adequate time to decide (30 minutes on a Sunday morning), we chose the Viscous Hibiscus, Voodoo Doll, Maple Old Fashioned, and Double Chocolate. The inside is an interesting vibe- neon and instagrammy but also a little "worn" from the 6th street crowd I assume. There were 3 registers/employees serving customers which was the most possible with their set up, and employees were slowed a bit by having to build their own donut boxes and retrieve each order on their own (no food runners). Regardless, they were all friendly and handled the crowd very well!! Not a bad thing but something worth noting was that we noticed that the yeast donuts are much larger than the old fashioneds when we got our order! They are not too small at all, but the yeast donuts were big and filling! I could honestly share one! The artistry and flavor combos are unique and impressive, but the donuts themselves are pretty standard. As such, I encourage you to branch out on flavor because it is hard to justify the line otherwise! I wouldn't call it a must-stop, but the Voodoo Doll was fun to eat nonetheless!! read more
