The donuts are good! One of my local friend's go-to spots! Today we're went in for a quick treat on the way to the airport. The cashier was not amused by our banter, but the over al experience was fun. The decor is colorful and funky with lots of instagrammable spots. And all of that would be a waste if the donutt wasn't spectacular. They do not disappoint!!! Around $5 for 2 donuts... not bad for what you get. These are yummy and HUGE! Lol! 4 Stars for good doughnuts with fun branding and a prime location. When in downtown Austin, it seems almost a requirement to visit Voodoo. Not because it's from this city originally, but because you see those pink boxes all over your hotel lobby as tons of people arrive ready to gorge on these sugar bombs. And so you must follow. The location is right downtown. I went on a Sunday morning and the surroundings looked like a good night was had the evening prior. Like what I imagine the Vegas strip looks like in the light of day. A bit deserted and rough around the edges. It definitely felt like more of a nightclub/bar evening hangout in the area. The location is big, bright, and has space for a long line (which I imagine they see grow out the door in occasion. We ordered a pretty random assortment, including their take on the Boston Cream donut and an apple fritter. Those were our faves of the bunch and I'd recommend them in a heartbeat (Albeit a slightly slower heartbeat on account of all the sugar and fat...). Overall, yummy! Lots of hype for a sweet treat. I've heard a lot about this place, but since I live in Houston and we just recently got one and the place is still pack, we gave this place a try because we were in the area. Walking in, place was interesting looking. They have a variety of doughnuts, but it wasn't my type of doughnuts. I still wanted to still give it a try so I got The Dirt. Your normal basic doughnut with cream and oreos on top. They were HUGEEEEE! The doughnut itself was delicious, but the cream made it so sweet I couldn't finish the whole thing. We got many of the others that looked really good. All were super sweet though. The workers were nice and friendly. We had one that was so funny. She told us we can customize our doughnuts by either writing something on it or adding sprinkles which was pretty dope because we got the Cock-n-Balls. We had to add a little decoration on that one. Coming to austin I had to try this place since I saw it on food network years and years go. Sadly it did not live up to expectations. The special voodoo doughnut that I saw on TV all those years ago looked nothing like it used to. It was old almost stale like it had been made the day before. I gave it another go by getting the limited time special Mango Ginger Kiss doughnut. Which was a yeast doughnut with mango cream filling and ginger icing with some crystalized ginger on top. Sadly this also was a disappointment. There was not very much cream in the center and the ginger flavor was almost non existent. It appears the quality has gone down since it gained fame. This is a larger Voodoo Doughnut Shop than most I've been to. They have good donuts.... lots of fun colorful flavors to chose from. It sounds crazy and simple but the cake sprinkles are my very favorites. And then the Gay Bars. The shop has seating and it's open 24 hours. But put your wallet/money in your pocket while you're eating your donuts. There were two men in there both times I was in there walking table to table and if they saw 5$ they would say "I need $5 for my daughters diapers, can you please help?" Vegan donut was very average. I had the school daze (peanut butter and raspberry jelly) and it was dense and "bready". Not like a fluffy yeast donut. Before you say it's because it's vegan, I've had a few other vegan yeast donuts elsewhere that are amazingly soft and pillowy. Sadly the vegan ones at voodoo are not ): flavor wise is okay- generous peanut butter flavor but it isn't a sweetened peanut butter glaze. It's actually just peanut butter on top of the donut so it's really sticky. The jelly saved it. Overall with the dry donut base and sticky peanut butter i had to drink water to wash it down. Maybe the other vegan flavors are better! I appreciate that voodoo has all these vegan options and was one of the first vegan donuts on scene back when it was hard to find. Both were yeast doughnuts--doughnuts rising in the yeast...rising in the heat... or in this case rising in Austin. The raspberry Romeo was a doughnut that was conspicuously filled with raspberry. I've never been a fig fan of jelly filled doughnuts but today was the day to give it a try. I took a small bite and another as I enjoyed it very much. I also ordered an original glazed and you cannot go wrong with original--am I right or am I right? This location has restored my faith in voodoo doughnuts and look forward to trying the Los Angeles location. After complaining about hair on my donut, my partner was called a f****t Jew. My partner and I, who is Jewish stopped by this place yesterday. We had heard great things about the donuts so we decided to add it to our itinerary for our Austin vacation. Everything went well until my partner, a Jewish man who wears a yarmulke, complained about string of hair he found on his Mango Tango doughnut. The cashier completely dismissed us and said that we must have been responsible for the strand of hair. We were of course appalled and asked to speak to a manager. But that made matters worse. We explained what happened and out experience with the cashier, but the manager went on a tangent about how he didn't like rude customers who complained all the time. I explained that this was our first time in the establishment and how we just had concerns about the service. My partner made a statement that the service was terrible and the that's when the manager said "I am sure there are placed that treat f****t Jews worse" and then asked us to leave. Obviously we were in disbelief. I understand that antisemitism and homophobia exist, but we just wanted to purchase donuts and not be the target of hateful rhetoric. Awesome is all I can say. We were thrilled to see this Portland icon in Austin. We stopped here twice in two days and if we were here longer we would have stopped again. Over our two visits we got the Gaybar, the maple cream and the glazed yeast - all were superb. The Gaybar was the best stuffed with Bavarian cream and a vanilla frosting. I think their yeast donuts are their strong suit - I advise going that route.
