This is my local grocery store because I hate Walmart and their business practices. This Vons has everything I need which is my criteria for a grocery store. The staff is friendly enough, and help me when requested, particularly when I cannot find a product. I do find the store a bit dirtier than say an Albertsons, but it is fine given the age of this store. The sign inside still says "Saugus" but in 1987 Saugus, Canyon Country, Newhall, and Valencia were subsumed under the name Santa Clarita. That was 38 years ago and they have not changed the sign or significantly cleaned/straightened up the store. I had the best experience at Vons today, thanks to the amazing barista, Sierra, at the Starbucks counter! From the moment I walked up, she greeted me with a friendly smile and was super helpful in making sure I got exactly what I wanted. She even took the time to precisely describe each of the three new Frapuccino flavors--Salted Caramel Mocha (being the sweetest), Brown Sugar (sweetest mostly on the topping with a stronger pure coffee flavor throughout the rest of the drink), and the Strawberry Matcha (sweet, but not too sweet). I thoroughly enjoyed the new Strawberry Matcha Frappuccino. It had just the right amount of Matcha Green Tea containing antioxidants and Vitamin C in the Strawberry puree with Oatmilk and the non-dairy whipped topping. The perfect blend of creamy matcha and sweet strawberry, which was mostly flavored by the strawberries as I reached the bottom of the drink--refreshing, unique, and delicious. I would buy it again! Absolutely horrible expirence with there floral department. Gave baloons a week prior to get them helium filled. They call me a day before an event and tell me they have run out of helium that I need to come pick up my baloons. I've been going to this store for about a decade. I love or I thought i love all the employees but after the way Todd treated me last night i feel compelled to speak up. The lines were extremely long and when I got to Todd, he was speaking with one of the customers about how he complains to management that there not enough people working at the checkout stands. I ignored that and just continued walking up to him. I informed him that the bag that he was grabbing was not mine, and he looked at me and said that if I would've put my beer on the belt like everyone else, then this would've been a problem. The reason why I don't put the beer on the belt is because I know with some of the other checkers, it is hard to slide across the scanner and hurts their wrist. So I just ignored that rude comment and continue to pay. Then I saw that my discount was not applied to the bill. I pointed out that I should've only paid $20 and he responded that I should know that with tax and CRV. The price will go up. And I indicated to him that it was $20 and he responded no no no. At this point the conversation elevated into an argument which I paid the amount that he told me too, and I walked over to the aisle where I picked up the beer took a picture of the discount which was $20 to go show him. On my way back the kind employee came over and told me that the checker next to me would take care of me and she refunded the money and I paid the proper amount. This is not the first time Todd has spoken and acted out in this manner with me and my wife. He keeps bragging that he's in a union and they can't do anything to get him out of there but as a union employee myself, I am fully aware that there are harassment laws and classes. I pick up donations in the back on Saturday's. For one thing, I have to pack my own bread and look for my donation when everything sould be packed and ready to go. (I don't work for Vons) why should I have to pack up or look for anything. Secondly, when I get there the back shipping and receiving is always locked. I constantly ring the bell to no avail. They expect me to walk around to the front of the store, scamble around and look for the manager to let them know I'm there, in which, I feel I shouldn't have to. Sometimes, I have been a little late (only 10 or 15 mins) because I have explained that I have a Down Syndrome daughter that I have to tend to in the morning. The manager said she don't care, very rudely. But, the other times she thought I was late was because she did not take in consideration that I was waiting at the back door for 30 to 45 mins ringing the bell for them to open the door. When the fire broke out in Pacific Palisade I was trying to explain why I was 20 mins late cuz I was up for two days volunteering at the Westwood Rec Center with the Red Cross. I looked a mess cuz I hadn't had any sleep for two days (Thursday and Friday, Jan 9th and the 10th) the manager Heather started yelling saying again" I don't care" and screaming so loud in front of other employeess very, very disrespectfully and unprofessional. Talking to me like I was a kid that hit another kid. (This is why you shouldn't hire uneducated people). When I returned the following week, one of the employees apologized for her rudeness. I said "don't do that, it's not up to you to apologize". I told them from now on that, I'm not walking around to the front anymore nor am I going to pack bread. So when I returned the following week to pick up the donations, I rang the bell and called them on my cell phone to tell them I was in the back. After waiting for an hour, the other manager tells me she's not giving me the donations because I was late. I explained that I wasn't late that, in fact, I called the front talked to Danny the meat manager that, I was in the back waiting he said that he's going to call to have the door opened. Now at this point, I've been waiting out there for an hour. I was there on time. Just messy management!!! It's sad that this huge nation wide Corporation has no donation infrastructure to make sure that people receiving donations, are treated with respect and make sure that people aren't using it for their own gain. I'm an activist, have a charitable org, a co-founders for a non-profit since 1991 and have a BA degree from UCLA class of 09 in Gender Studies/Civic Engagement, Social Justice and Community organization. I feed the homeless, deliver food to resources centers and shelters, pass out food to low income complex apartments. I have three other pick-ups; from Trader Joes and a Food Coalition and I don't have any problems with them at all. They are very understanding and professional. They communicate with me, works with the schedule and have everything ready for me when I get there for donations. Also, I'm sometimes late but they understand and know what I do, in terms of help people be productive citizens. Thirdly, when John was working in shipping and receiving everything ran smoothly. We all received meat equally but lately I hardly get meat but ever since he retired things in the back has been a mess. I don't know why that the manager can't see that and try to accommodate things so it can run smoother. Obviously she doesn't care. I agree with some of the other reviews and comments that it's like she doesn't want to work. What, she's that busy that she can't make sure the food is packed and just unlock the door. I love the cash customer service from the cashiers, each visit. However, two things that I don't like from this location...their habanero chicken sucks (barely any sauce on it and no heat at all. My daughter and I went to get some cokes that were on sale. Now I have to tell you that I love Vons Market and I love their checkers! They are always on top of things except tonight. I walked up to a check stand and after the customer he had left I went to unload my cart. There were items on the belt so I said to him that those items weren't mine. He then started ringing them up. Some guy left them there to go back and get more stuff. Now protocol says to take the customer that's there and ring the sale out. But he told me to go next door after I had unloaded my cart. So I had to load everything back into the cart and go to a really nice checker . Then I notice he rings out the sale after I leave and rings up a 20 something girl. My checker asked me how I was doing and I said irritated because of how that male checker had treated me. I felt discriminated against by him. So I asked him his name and he boasted he was a store manager biding his time to retire. He made fun of me and said his name was Ollie The female checker was wonderful as usual. The store was very clean and well stocked. I gave Ollie several bottles of expired Miracle Whip. I told him the whole shelf were expired and I saw him do nothing about it. I hope since it's Miracle whip someone does not get sick and possibly die from buying it. Three young guys in the store talked to me and made me feel better. We went there today and were very disappointed. I am handicapped and need to use one of their electric scooters. The scooter was very difficult to access and unplug from the electrical plug. I used the scooter for about five minutes before it ran out of its charge. Next, we found that there were no plastic bags for produce. They said that they were out! Normally when I see a Vons, it is my ideal grocery store when I need something. This particular store really missed the mark for me and makes me not want to shop here. I came in needing a cake for a baby shower. Mind you: I tried to order a week ahead but was unable to due to COVID (their cake decorator was unavailable). The cake I need was for a gender neutral shower and I came in to check out the available selection. I waited at the bakery counter for 10 minutes and NO ONE even acknowledged me, though I could hear employees carrying on inside the bakery. I eventually asked a stocker if someone could help me and he went to grab one of the bakers. The lady that helped me was incredibly short with me, as if I was wasting her time buying a cake. I asked her advice on what might be best and she told me "I don't know because you didn't order ahead so you just need to pick one". Wow, okay. I explained to her that I couldn't order ahead, and she told me just to pick a cake. I pick a cake; she boxes a DIFFERENT cake than the one I wanted. I was so frustrated with the lack of care, I just took the cake, paid and left. I would not come back to this bakery every again if given the choice. This store is disappointing. It always feels so depressing and dim inside. The cashiers at the main checkouts are very nice. I have been shopping here for years despite my problems with it solely due to convenience. The two stars is for the shelves always being stocked, but don't come here for a good customer service experience anywhere but the front of the store. When you want a coffee at Starbucks, the employees will stand behind the counter, acknowledge you, and keep on their conversation about personal stuff. Super tall young man and super tall young woman. They will act inconvenienced by you and whisper, "Ugh, hold on let me help her before I finish the story" to their coworker. I hate to leave poor reviews, but this particular Vons really needs to get their act together! This review is aimed at the produce and freezer departments and the lack of variety, especially when it comes to organic fruits and vegetables. I came in on a Friday morning at about 8:00 AM and the few organic produce items they did have looked terrible, although it appeared they were restocking some things. It's so disappointing that in this day and age when people are trying to be so conscientious about taking care of their health that the variety of fresh, organic produce is so limited. Albertsons has at least twice the variety and is fully stocked whenever I am there. After their latest remodel, it's like a farmer's market!! As for Von's freezer section, the variety of organic fruits and vegetables is even more limited. If you are looking for vegetables, it's mostly butter-laden, seasoned (meaning heavily salted) Birds-eye. The real kicker is in contrast to their frozen produce options, it's almost disgusting how diverse the processed food options are. Pizzas, TV dinners, and fatty, processed food options appear to be endless. I'm done shopping at Vons until they up their game. Now I remember why I don't like this Vons. I was there this morning waiting at the deli counter. Three workers were there and I was the only person waiting. Two of them looked at me twice without acknowledging me, not even a hint of a smile. The female looked annoyed that I was there, but finally said she'd be right with me. That didn't happen. She went to the other end and talked to another worker and then told me he would help me. No one helped me but they kept talking to each other. I waited at least 10 minutes and then walked away. Within the core of my consumer experience at this Vons begins with my notice of a potentially life threatening cross contamination situation in the dairy case - bottles of SoDelicious Almond Milk crusted with cow's milk. Cow's milk that is also crusted on multiple other surfaces inside the case creating a foul smell. I did not purchase this almond milk product although that was my intention. I did check back a week later thinking perhaps the situation had been attended to but no it had not. The cross contamination situation remained. My consumer experience continues to include my alerting the cashier and the store manager of this situation. A cross contamination situation that could quite literally end in death for someone allergic to dairy or severe illness for a non-allergic person or persons. People unknowingly making hand to mouth contact with the old crusted milk spread on numerous surfaces in the dairy case or accidentally spreading the contamination to other items in their cart and then ingesting the potentially contaminated items - apples for example. I also called the Los Angeles County Health Department upon returning home from my visit to Vons that day and explained the situation to them. Fast forward 3 days after alerting previous mentioned parties and the situation in the dairy case is exactly the same. Multiple bottles of almond milk and a dairy case splattered and crusted with expired milk. My consumer experience finalizes with deciding to write a review leading to the discovery of previously written negative reviews of this Vons. Reviews highlighting other potential food born illness causing situations from preceding months. My overall consumer experience is a misunderstanding of a) Why nobody cares if anybody dies until someone dies and b) Where does this company get the money to pay out Monopoly prizes when apparently they do not have funds for food safety checks? read more
