I didn't have a terrible experience here like a lot of other reviewers did, but I did come on a Monday around 11 or 12 PM. It wasn't crowded and the shelves were all fully stocked. The cashier who rang us up was super friendly and we didn't wait in line at all. They seem to have pretty much everything you would need: fresh produce, seafood and meats, frozen stuff, bakery items, and any sort of packaged food. Maybe I came at at great time on a great day, but I came away thinking that I liked Vons. This is my first time in one and I would come back again. The only thing is that the prices seem a bit higher, but I also don't know what the normal prices are for groceries in Cali since I live in the Midwest. read more

With lines that rival a Disney attraction, it's a wonder people keep coming here... except if you realize they're the only major grocery store in town. Perennially it has massive lines (10-20 deep) at times when you'd expect them to be staffed up, such as a Friday night during ski season. I have just purchased a few groceries at this Vons location at around 4:00 pm on April 9th, 2018. The selection was great, and the place was clean ALTHOUGH the cashier was obnoxiously rude. Her name was Patsy. I could not believe how impolite she could be to a customer. I walked up to her checkout station and placed my items on the belt that she happened to start cleaning at the time. She immediately looked up and scoffed, saying "I was just cleaning that." I apologized and offered to take off my groceries from the belt and move elsewhere, although she responded by saying "you already put it down so whatever." My girlfriend apologized once more and she just waved us off. The rest of the checkout followed in a similar passive-aggressive manner. I've never encountered such a rude worker before, as this is my first negative review. To whom it may concern, please look into training this employee to become a respectful individual. read more

It's so convenient to have a full super market up here in Mammoth. I'm so glad there's place to get groceries and grab stuff that we forget to pack as well as stuff we run out of.... =) The employees are friendly enough and willing to help. It is okay because it is a gorcery store. I remember this store as Safeway back in the 80's (geeze I am getting old). This time though after we got the groceries that we needed for the few days we went to go to the check out. No self check out. Starbucks in the store as well as across the street (typical starbucks huh just like there are 3 starbucks at Del Amo mall which includes the one at Barnes & Nobles) and every corner in a big city. They carry fishing supply. The donuts (donuts are the devil's food I know) are not good. There was probably only 2 baggers so I bagged my own crap. Whack. And there wasn't any paper bags just plastic even though we have reusable bag. read more

Worst grocery store I've ever been to. I only come to this VONS after midnight, on a weekday, when it is less busy. Unfortunately at that hour there are boxes of stuff everywhere that it makes it difficult to walk. Good luck with a cart. Lines can go around the entire store. The "express" lines regularly take longer than the regular line and are filled with people buying vegetables (which requires a lookup) or paying with empty debit cards or cards that won't swipe. Stocking is very poor. There have been several times when the store has been completely out of milk. There have been times where this store has been out of everything on my shopping list. A lot of people are saying that this VONS is upscale. There is nothing upscale about this market. Its offerings are no different than any other VONS. The only differences are related to price and poor service. There is even an FB group about how bad this VONS is, and some of the staff posts in it talking about how bad the pay is and how we shouldn't complain because of it. Like that makes everything all better and going to this market more convenient. Don't like your pay with *benefits*? Quit, and get a new job. Want to keep your job? Then stop complaining and do your job. There are a few checkers at that market that need to go. For the amount of business that Mammoth sees, we deserve a better option. read more

I have given this Von's in Mammoth thousands of dollars in business on ski trips etc coming from socal. My recent trip was easily the worse customer experience at any supermarket . I took my small basket of items to the "express 15 or less" counter. Upon laying down a few snack items several of which were identical, the check-out staffer Judith J rudely asked me " Can you read to me that sign?". I guess this was her patronizing way of indicating I might have more?? I counted 17 items several of which were identical. Then she told me "you are cheating". Then after laying down a Gatorade package she pretended I was interfering with her stating "don't touch that its in my space". Von's needs to do a better job training staffers about how to treat customers. read more

My son and I spent Fathers Day weekend in Mammoth recently and went to Vons to pick up supplies/ First of all they were all out of BREAD! When we asked the worker when will you have the bread delivery? He said 'dont know'. We asked him could he look in the back and see if you had any sandwich rolls? He came back with a package of sourdough rolls that we used for BBQ chicken sandwiches. The I wanted something sweet so we went over to the snack aisle and they were out of DING DONGS!! Because this was the beginning of summer, should the store anticipate large weekend crowds and order supplies? Just saying. Also, 2 few cashiers which caused long long lines! read more

I don't think I've ever seen a Vons in as bad shape as this one. You can tell that the store is designed to have an upscale vibe and have fresh food, but sadly, many of the shelves were ransacked and not restocked, food and trash on the floor, and extremely slow, long lines that trailed up the frozen food aisles because they only had two checkers on duty on a weekend, during a Spring Break/Holiday week! We were able to find most of what we needed, but it definitely would have been a more "normal" shopping experience if only they had more stock people and more cashiers. read more

Perhaps that is why the police station is a half block away... Formerly Safeway, this supermarket was originally located where the Rite Aid is now at the corner of Main and Old Mammoth. Now being located at Meridian and Old Mammoth it is a quick cruise from anywhere in town. Still having a virtual monopoly has allowed this store to be the single busiest supermarket that I know of. Pro Tip: Come here in the am when all of the tourists are out hiking, fishing, biking, skiing, or are snowed in. Like around 10am The lines are always full and the food will fly off of the shelves here. So if you know what you want act on it quickly before deciding to peruse the aisles for interesting things. Pro Tip #2: The prices here for non sale items are very high. Be forwarned that you want to get things on sale or bring it with you if you are from out of town. Make sure you have your vons card number or get one so you can get a discount becuase otherwise, well you just got ripped off worse than Bonnie n Clyde with an open safe in front of them. The quality of the meats, cheeses, veggies, etc is all very good. The store is very clean for how much traffic it receives. I would suggest shopping here, but why? This Vons saved my day! Went fishing / camping with a large group to Rock Creek last weekend and I almost forgot it was my 6 year old's birthday. OOPS BAD DAD! Luckily I did remember and I managed to sneak away in search of a birthday cake. I knew Mammoth had a Vons so I went there in hopes of finding something to make my baby's day a little special. She was so happy the day before catching her first trout that I had to come up with something cool for her b-day. I pulled into Vons at 9:30am and found its bakery. I told the nice girl working there my predicament and she said "no Problem" and proceeded to show me a book full of cake ideas. Hello Kitty sheet cake with strawberries and butter-creme frosting! That's the one for me. "I can have it ready by 11:00" she told me. Hell yea I couldn't believe my ears.... I was hoping next day at best. She told me that every princess needs a cake on her special day. I also stopped at the Starbucks inside and got some hot chocolate for my other daughter and friend who came to help me......In search of toys another review. We had the cake later that evening, it was great and my daughter loved it! This Vons is great! Super staff! read more

Just a quick update..people who visit and go to the store shouldn't be surprised or in sticker shock (and it really isn't THAT much more than anywhere else). Look at where you are first! I can only imagine how you could bitch and moan at the cost of food if you went to Hawaii or Alaska or Aspen or any more remote location where a drive to get any food delivered is typically 6-7 hours if being brought up on a semi. It costs to ship things up to the high sierra. Have you checked the cost of fuel these days? The cost is added on to you the consumer which the market stores do everywhere and not just here. It's not THAT much more inflated taking into account this location. Some items don't cost any more then down in places like LA or San Fran or Seattle, Denver..you get the picture. Someone was complaining about the meat being brown, well excuse me did you ask the butcher if they had some more meat in the back or did you look at the meat in the %off section which usually means the meat is old. I know when to shop and where to look. No this Vons doesn't even compare to how expensive Whole Foods is. Really? Some of you honestly think it's as expensive at WFs? Come one people! I've been to WFs and this doesn't come close to some of the expensive items they sell. *shaking my head at some of the reviews*. Next time do your homework. You can go on-line and check out the website for this zip code and it will show you sales and in store pricing. How to shop at Vons in Mammoth Lakes: 1. Check the date. If it's between 3-8pm on a Friday, or Saturday, don't bother. If it's a holiday, really don't bother, because despite the multitudes of grocery stores they could have stopped at on the way up, the city folk bought all the food and there's none left for you, unfortunate local. (You should know better. During tourist season, only grocery shop on Tuesdays or Wednesdays after everything's restocked. On busy weekends or holidays, only come while the mountain's open or at midnight to pick through what's left.) 2. Be moderately prepared for a social interaction. If you pop in any weekday during that post-work hour, you'll likely run into your dental hygienist, the bartender who got you hammered 3 nights ago, your boss' boss, 6 of your best friends, and the punk kids whose dog shits on your lawn every day. You don't have to dress up for this occasion, but don't walk in wearing the pants with the hole in the crotch you still haven't thrown away, and for god's sake, put some eyedrops in your eyes and refrain from eating candy bars in the liquor aisle. 3. Check your produce carefully, from every angle possible. Especially if it's a specialty piece of produce or an item that you would never catch in a ski bum's basket. It's not Vons' fault - things grow mold when they sit untouched between weekends. That's how you know it's actually food. 4. Pick through some more fruit and produce, then just say fuck it and head toward the front-middle section of the store - you know what they keep there. Say hi to just about all of your friends in the span of these 3 aisles. It's like our version of Cheers. 5. Spot some Big Important Person from your company loitering in the wine section. Say hello politely and awkwardly point at the bottle of cheap Malbec in your hand while commenting about meeting in the "best aisle of the store." Curse Vons silently for putting 2-liter sodas right behind imported red wine when she looks at you sideways, says "okay," and picks up a Cactus Cooler. 6. Escape toward the back of the store and suspiciously poke packages of meat, some in early stages of decay. There are usually plenty of edible steaks here as long as you're not picky about the exact cut you want, but today doesn't appear to be your day. Check the dates on every package before audibly shouting for joy and running for the cart when you see the meat man wheeling out a new batch. 7. Head left for some staple items. Since they upgraded this place a few months back, the inventory here now rivals a normal grocery store in a mediocre suburban area. You'll find everything you need, a few things NOBODY needs, and nothing more. While I still walk through city grocery stores basically salivating out of my eyeballs and mentally licking everything I see, at least I don't have to drive 3 hours to Reno every time I want some coconut oil and a mango anymore. 8. Cruise the Asian section, a 3-foot wide span of shelves that includes almost nothing but soy sauce, packaged miso soup mix, some Pocky, and a bag of Hello Kitty strawberry marshmallows that I've never seen anybody touch, ever. Consider buying the marshmallows. Grab a Shin Ramen and some Thai Kitchen coconut milk instead. 9. Get in line at the checkout counter (another place where you'll have to fist-bump a billion people and be fake-nice to a bunch of people you work with who're just being fake-nice to you back). Realize suddenly that you're standing behind your doctor and vaguely try to cover up the copious amounts of liquor in your basket with a piece of kale or something. 10. Tell Fireball (to his delight) that he broke his previous record today once he's done flinging your shit across his station and into bags more rapidly than you ever believed could be possible by a human. Say bye and see ya later - you know you've made it in this town the dude remembers your name. read more

Before we went back up the mountain to the lodge, I am glad we located this supermarket grocery store. Booze, Ice and snacks that is all I needed. Of all places to have staff that is terribly lacking in any customer service skills ..... a grocery store?! Our visit tonight was painful. The checker named Bonnie who was rude, lacked personality, had negative customer service skills, didn't know any pleasantries, etc was rain on our parade! That was so uncomfortable, no smile (yes, you can tell even when wearing a mask if someone has a smile on their face), no greeting, a gruff voice that harshly told us to wait loading our groceries until she soaked the conveyor belt in cleaning spray and cleaned it. Ok, props for cleaning but the tone in which she used was so rude. No small talk in between even after I thanked her for handing me the grocery bags that I was loading into our basket. She growled the amount we owed and that was it. I'm sorry you seem so miserable with your life but do not take it out on the public shopping at this store. And for management, it takes effort to be that unhappy as a person and to be that rude to people, you should be embarrassed to employ someone like that especially in a role that deals directly with the public. If I ever have to come back to this store I will avoid Bonnie's lane at all costs. Please remove her from her checker role, give her a crash course in customer service, tell her to change her mood, something! When you have that bad of an attitude it effects others, yuck! Maybe it's the high altitude like some people say? Who knows? What to do for sustenance then? Go to Vons. If you don't know how to cook or even BBQ then you best learn quick. Grab yourself some goodies and make a fine a** meal that will make mouths drool. While your at it grab a movie from the 2 Blockbuster machines inside Vons. it's a supermarket, what do you expect. Not a lot of options in Mammoth but this place is fine. The prices are higher than my local Von's but it convenient. - They offer local beers but beware. Most were not that good for the high price tag. I just paid 16 buck for a 6 pack of crappy local beer. I say stick with the beers you like instead of trying the local beers. - Stuff for smores. They have a section for stuff to make smores but be careful not the get too much chocolate. I grabbed all the fixins for smores in the section but now I'm left with too much chocolate and graham crackers. You can't do much about the graham crackers but buy the chocolate per bar. read more

It's so unfortunate that this is the only grocery store in town. (Besides Sierra Sundance and the Mexican markets of course.) Have they stopped putting their naggers through training? The kid with the glasses ALWAYS puts my banana on the bottom of the bag. And now that we have to bring reusable ones, the bags are huge and he likes on loads of other stuff. I just want to bag my own stuff. They say stores like Vons can up their prices because they offer bagging services, carry-out, and short lines. Nothing but bad experiences with this vons. Being a local I try to avoid it like the plague and try to make the 40 minute trip down to Smart & Final in bishop. But every so often I need to pick up a couple items before work, again I walk in a few minutes before six, I go to the only check stand with the light on (indicating it's open). I wait for a couple minutes and nobody acknowledges me. After waiting I walk up to their front desk and knock in their little office room and no one answers. As I walk back to a check stand 2 more customers get in line. I look up to their second floor office window and I see Rosalinda looking down and start waving my arms signaling we need a cashier she ignores me, and a few moments later makes an announcement on the loudspeaker "Raul can you check up front please, Raul" (Raul being the guy with glasses that works in the produce department) after a few seconds Raul starts walking in the direction of the check stands and than one of the other produce guys calls him back to the produce corner, and Raul simply shrugs his arms and went back. A few moments later Jasmin canes up and rings us all up. Thank god for Jasmin she's the real star. All the other employees there seem to forget they have a job because we shop there. Always acting like they're doing us a favor. And again why hire such rude and disrespectful employees. Especially with an attitude like Rosalinda and Kim (the chubby old lady with short hair). You can check the cameras to make sure everything I say is true, it was either Tuesday August 30 or Wednesday August 31. At around 5:50 am. It's ridiculous that this store is only consistent in staffing rude employees. I would say, DON'T COME here if you're arriving on Fridays or Saturdays, otherwise, Do Come here on weekdays, because the items weren't so quickly run out during that time. The prices are all the same like everywhere else and they carry everything from skiing gear to regular food, you don't see that on regular Vons, rite? Plenty of parking and saves us lots of money from eating outside by buying perishables here, made easy to cook meals. Thank you Vons! read more

The only reason this isn't a one-star review is because I've been here every summer for about the past 30 years and it has generally been good. This year, I arrived for my vacation on a Friday night, along with a goodly portion of the population of Southern California. There was one register open when I arrived, and the line was at least 12 patrons deep. Floors were filthy with no evidence that a mop was anywhere in the plan. A second register was eventually opened, but not before the line doubled (see photo). If you can't keep staff on hand for a totally predictable surge in business, that is either a local management problem, or more likely, a corporate directive to limit payroll. Since the Vons back home has similar issues with cashier staffing, I'm guessing the latter. read more

I wish the grocery stores in my area worked this fast when there was a rush of people at 6PM on a Friday. I think we were in & out in 20 minutes & there were 6 of us shopping for 3 days worth of food. This place is well stocked with the necessities. Except they don't have rumple minze. I've only ever been here during tourist season, so of course there's going to be a bunch of bros & brahs loading up on the coors light. Be patient & try to avoid the peak hours for coming here. This is the only grocery store in Mammoth and boy do they know it. The prices are higher than any Vons you will ever go in to and the employees are not that friendly. This may be because they are busy all day with tourist. That should not be an excuse since it is the tourist that are keeping this place alive. This location has everything that all other Vons locations have. They also sell firewood and have 2 Redbox locations inside. If you are planning on going here to get food, make sure you have a Vons card or get one. It makes a huge difference on the prices and also expect to wait in line. It is always busy. They do have a great selection of beer and wine here. Probably to make all of the Mountain Bikers and Snowboarders happy. read more

For starters, if you're coming from outside of Mammoth, buy what you can before you go or prepare to pay almost double for certain goods. After living in Mammoth, I found that prices were extremely prone to random spikes. They really had nothing to do with holidays, weather or anything logical. They just happened sometimes. That being said, there are some deals to be had -- avocados were 88c/piece at one point -- but don't let good prices fool you, either. The fruit platters, normally $9.99/each, went on sale for 2 for $5 .. yes, $2.50/each, so I was all over them. I bought four and tore into one in my car because I was that excited, only to find out it was spoiled beyond belief (the others were as well). The expiration date wasn't until 2 days later, but they must have been ready for the trash way before I even bought them. This happened to me again about a month later, but thankfully I only purchased one. 4 stars for great staff, a cheaper Starbucks than the village and, after all, it is a Vons in the middle of the mountains -- what are you complaining about? read more

Complete jerks. I honestly am shaking I'm so annoyed. I am in the customer service industry, and we would NEVER treat customers the way they treated me. I spent almost $200 there, and they waited until all my groceries were squished at the end and I had already paid before the bag lady literally just walked away. I looked at the cashier and said "so, am I bagging this myself then?" He just said: " uh... Ya. When it's your own bags." I said "that would have been nice to know at the beginning" and he just laughed awkwardly. The food was squished and stacked awkwardly at the end, so that while I was packing, things kept dropping and one of my salads burst open. The guy just looked at me and said "that sucks." And I looked at him and he said "I'll get you another one." But he just stayed put. Someone else came up and did a transaction while I was still putting things away, and finally I was done, so I asked what I should do about it the salad, and he said to "just go get another one, yourself". I can't believe the lack of service or help. I'm so angry. Luckily there is another grocery store up here, cuz this place is just all kinds of messed up. read more

It's your typical--dare I say Southern Californian--Vons. Not much more or less than you'd expect. We mostly came here when we were on vacation for five to seven days, so I used to wonder why my mom and dad bought brands different from the ones we bought from the Vons in Whittier. So for example, although we always bought the Jerseymaid (or whatever it was; sorry I don't remember) brand milk at the Vons in Whittier, on vacation we would buy the generic or another brand. Like I said, the selection here was identical to our home Vons, but either my parents became more price-conscious on vacation or they just didn't think of this supermarket as a normal everyday supermarket. I'm sure it's normal everyday for the year-round residents of Mammoth Lakes, but for people like us who came once a year in July or August, it was special. I also liked that we got different brands, though, because that meant the refrigerator in the house or condo at which we were staying never reminded me of our refrigerator at home--except for the familiar Tupperware, which we had brought from home, on the shelves. read more
