Considering where this is and being that it was winter, this place rocks. We showed up with nine people for lunch and I'm thinking there is no way they are going to have enough food and it will be marginal at best. I was wrong on both accounts. The burritos were really good and had a great hot sauce to go with them. The service is just checking out at the register and we sat on the curb and ate. So, the atmosphere was cool clear and open. Lee Vining is a small town and Mono Market is a great market. It carries a good selection of food items and other supplies. Our cabin is in June Lake and the grocery store there is larger but sometimes I find food items like vegetables looking better at Mono Market. It's convenient when we drive through Lee Vining to shop at Mono Market. There are shops down the street and across the street. The people whom work there are very friendly and courteous. I love the vintage market, it's in the original shape and is clean inside. read more

I wish they'd update the signs on their produce. They have gala apples marked as "organic" at 3.29 a pound, yet the apples are stickered with "4000" series labels, meaning they're conventional, not organic. I also wouldn't buy anything that doesn't have a price sticker on it. You should be able to determine the price on a jar of olives before it's scanned at the register. I skip shopping here whenever possible. read more

Gayle and I took a Sunday road trip yesterday, starting in Genoa and going as far as the beginning of the June Lake Loop before returning home. In between was Mono Lake, Bodie, and a variety of stunning scenery. Once we arrived at Lee Vining, there were only 2 thing on our mind: finding a bathroom and finding snacks. The former was found at Gus Hess Community park and the later at the Mono Market (which outside the Shell station, seemed to be the only thing open in town). The store has a distinct red frontier exterior appearance. Inside is fairly large, with a large section of alcohol up front and a variety of maze-like aisles. I went for the chicken burrito (back right), while Gayle picked out cheese, jerky, and chocolate. After we left, we proceeded to a picnic table at the Mono Lake County park, and took in a beautiful sunny day with nice water views. This kind of local grocery store is usually a 3-star experience for me. But, there is a nice selection and the folks here were working hard and making sure our shopping experience was safe. This store won my heart over with how seriously they are taking their safety measures during this COVID-19 pandemic. Mono Market made me feel safe by enforcing their mask policy (which is also the state's mask policy). They also made me feel proud because the employees were able to stand up for their own safety by educating customers to wear their masks properly or to leave the store. Most employees that work with the general public (I am one of them) never imagined being tasked with the burden of educating and enforcing these public safety measures, so when I see a business doing such a good job of it, and not taking any terrible excuses from customers, it makes me proud. So, thank you, Mono Market! The plastic barrier dividing the cashiers from the customers was also a reassuring measure. Regardless, Mono Market truly has the best selection of groceries in the area. We picked up instant coffee, sugar, milk, champagne, fresh veggies, and soap, among other necessities. Prices seemed fair to me, considering they have the best selection of product in the Yosemite area. Coming from Tahoe myself, you pay a little bit more to be where you actually want to be. The Mono Market is a cool little grocery store found in the small town of Lee Vining, CA. They're big on shopping local, therefor they offer a lot of environmentally friendly and locally sourced/produced products. They make fresh, hot food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All of which is very reasonably priced. I've never personally tried anything on their menu as I've just found out about this fact, but next time I'm through I'll be sure to stop by and try something out. The few times I've stopped in here for some snacks for hiking I've always been greeted with a warm, "hello", and was always sent away with a, "thank you for stopping by". The customer service here, in my experience, has always been good. Stop by and support a local company who does a lot of good for their community. They donate, help the local schools, pay their employees a livable wage, etc. Businesses like this one are the ones that'll earn my money time after time. read more

Yup, still awesome! We went to stock up on some lunch items to picnic with on our drive across 108, and as usual Mono Market did not disappoint. I tried their chicken burrito and holy smokes, this was the best burrito I've had in recent memory. The chicken was obviously homemade in a tomato-broth stew, with carrots and bell peppers amongst it. Rice was perfect and not used as a chintzy filler. Perfectly seasoned as well. And to top it off, cheese was evenly distributed and was gloopy! WOW. Will be getting this on all my return trips to the Eastern Sierra! read more

Stopped in here on our way back from a backpacking trip. Just wanted to get a couple of cold beers. Prices were high, but I fully expected that. They had a small selection in the back of singles, along with the others - six packs, 12 packs, and 18 packs. Found a couple of singles, pint size aluminum bottles, and paid the bill. I added it up even with taxes and deposits to be about 3 1/2 to 4 dollars, using the sticker price that was on each can. After getting in the car and driving to a nice location to enjoy a beverage, I started looking at the receipt. For some reason, dude charged me like five bucks! I couldn't figure out why the price was so much higher than the prices that were stuck to the cans. I suppose that's how these little places make their money! Oh how I wish there was a store like this at the entrance of every National Park! Such a cute little building which fits its surroundings so perfectly! We came in for coffee one morning before we entered Yosemite. Mainly a grocery store, but fully stocked with all you could ever need up in the mountains. From protein bars to basic needs like bread and milk, to bug spray, sunblock, bandaids and beef jerky. They even had a few souvenirs to take home with you. Yes, they did have coffee! It was great and it was local (I always like that), plus yummy pastries and espresso drinks to satisfy those suffering form Starbucks withdrawal. I was so delighted by what I found in that little store, that I complimented the cashier, who happened to be the owner. This little store is the Walmart of the mountains... you'll just get a lot better service and an actual pleasant experience! read more

We're so grateful for Mono Market! We come to this area for three weeks every year, and having this nice, well-stocked market is a blessing. They carry a good selection of fresh produce, much of it organic, a good freezer section, and just about every staple we need, also much of it organic. As expected in this small town, Mono Market is tight and jammed packed with stuff. It's the cool everything market from sundries and food/water/soda (and produce) to fishing stuff and beer - some ready to eat hot foods and cold ice cream ready to be scooped to a cone. If you thought no more could be edged in, there's also an ATM, Lotto, and liquor. This little town store gets big town busy. Don't climb on the bronze bear out front. Our family has had a cabin on Mono for years. We know that going to this store has been expensive in the past but it has gotten even more atrocious with the prices in the last several years. We usually shop before we come out for this reason, however sometimes we will need more milk and necessities that run out before our stay is done. Tonight we went in here and a half gallon of milk was almost 5 dollars. When we tried to ask the clerk why the prices were so high she was extremely rude and told us to go to Mammoth to shop and that she NEVER gets complaints about the prices. My husband put the things back that we were going to purchase except for the ice cream already promised to our 6 year old and told her that because she was so rude and the prices were so high they lost a sale. She said our "small sale was nothing anyway" "Have fun in Mammoth" But this place is not worth the prices to begin with. Though it's understandable that getting goods shipped to their location would mean a price increase these prices are exorbitant. If we are going to get treated like garbage on top of it we will continue to go to Mammoth. Americans are struggling financially as it is. Vacations are skipped altogether due to the cost of living. This store does not help those of us who manage to save for vacation and need a few necessities. read more

The ready made hot food was surprisingly decent - leagues ahead of the crap you'd find at a 7-Eleven or gas station mart. At night, when there aren't a lot of options, I was so happy to see their small pizzas. I didn't get to try their burritos - will make sure to taste it next time. I am so impressed with the Mono Market!! They are a tiny little store, but they manage to pack it with everything GOOD. And the prices are not bad - some are better than those in Bishop! For example, Avalon Organics Lavender Shampoo - at the Rite Aid in Bishop that stuff is $12, but at the Mono Market it is $9. Most things in Lee Vining are more expensive than elsewhere - the gas is the highest price in the eastern Sierra! And there's a reason for that - it's far/hard to get to/not on regular trucking routes for many things. Tioga Pass is only open in summer and commercial trucking isn't allowed through the Park, so you expect higher prices. I kept finding things that were around the same price or even cheaper than where I live in Bishop at the Mono Market, though, so they are really doing what they can to keep prices down - I was impressed. But on to the selection! I was up staying with friends for the weekend for the Mono Basin Bird Chautauqua, and came in for snacks and quick lunches, and that's when I discovered their "Mono Made" items - they have homemade delicious goodies that are very reasonably priced - I had the turkey wraps two days in a row they were so good. The turkey club wrap is made with bacon - and it manages to stay yummy and crisp (in most pre-prepared sandwiches, the bacon can get soggy or limp) - but it's all the other stuff that goes in that makes it such a treat: nicely chopped red onions, radishes, cucumber, and all wrapped in a nice leaf of greenleaf lettuce inside a spinach wrap. Another turkey wrap has cranberry sauce in it and is so good!! They have a small hot deli, too, with homemade burritos that looked tasty. I didn't try all the Mono Made items, but I bet most are great. They have a great selection of gourmet/natural foods type items - a much better cracker selection than Von's in Bishop, for example, and a surprising selection of produce for such a small produce section - they have arugula! I can't find Arugula in Bishop! Before it was bought by the current owner, it was an awful, but what you'd expect, mini-mart with everything in there "Little Debbie" or Springfield brand junk. But it has been transformed into a great community market with delicious food - I could happily live off of their food! read more

I'm a always surprised at the great selection and reasonable prices at Mono Mart especially given the popularity of the price gouging, mediocre Mobil Mart, just down the road. Think a Lee Vining-sized version of Bishop's Manor Market. They have a small selection of prepared foods in addition to produce (including things like fresh shitake) and dry goods. If you want to listen to bands and drink beer on a lawn then Mobil's your place, but if you want to restock your supplies at a legit grocery store then head to Mono Mart. read more

I think this is the only place to buy food stuffs in Lee Vining, it was the only place I saw when I was there. They are stocked with a great selection of Organic Produce! I was really surprised to see that and was happy to buy lots of fresh fruits for breakfast and hikes the next day. The deli/hot food counter changes daily so you can get yummy things like hot dogs or enchiladas if you want. They have your assorted grocery items also, with fresh local eggs if you are lucky and have a kitchen to cook the eggs close by. A large selection of booze makes me think this is also the local LQ, prices are reasonable and I didn't require any fancy Pinots to get me through my trip so it worked out well.
