I just reread my review from 10 years of visiting this Safeway on our way to Vegas, and nothing has changed. First, everybody we bump into at this Safeway is nice. The store was well presented, featured a nice variety of fresh fruit and vegetables and being just three days before Christmas, the place was jumping yet organized and friendly. On this occasion, we were able to use the bathroom, as we've been doing for the last 15 to 20 years and purchase some snacks. My wife chose some apples and cheese that we shared in the car, as well as some candy. As we checked out, the cashier asked if we wanted to contribute to the local food bank, and we would not even have known had she not mentioned it. It was our pleasure to contribute. So, should you find yourself in Hawthorne Nevada, needing to use the restroom, the Safeway is a good bet to meet your needs. We never hesitate to go here and we'll be back. read more

On our way from Mesa, AZ to a convention in Reno, NV, and we were looking for something to snack on other than fast food options. Saw a Safeway and decided to go on a quick shopping trip. Great selection and friendly employees. Prices seemed a little high on some items, but that's to be expected at a retail store in the middle of almost nowhere. We went up and down the aisles, stretching our legs and seeing what they had to offer. The deli area had some great refrigerated offerings and even some hot dishes and whole chickens. Everything smelled fantastic. In the end, we found some small gifts for friends - we do shopping for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays all the yearlong wherever we go. Found some great road snacks, too. Some lunch meat circles including salami, Ritz crackers, Lay's BBQ potato chips, etc. Added bonus - they had customer restrooms in the back of the store. Clean and fully stocked. We still had aways to travel and this stop really reenergized us and helped us push through to our destination. We will definitely add this to our Mesa to Reno checklist and remember to drop in on our next visit to northern Nevada. read more

To start, when asking someone in produce for mayo for the sandwich I was buying, I was told to "Get it up front. If they don't have any. I will go get you one." When checking out, I r'cvd nothing but attitude from the cashier. I gave her lots of leeway since she was very old but, I am old, too. I asked how much the ice was and she rudely replied, "I DON'T KNOW! THERE ARE TWO SIZES!" I asked how much for the small one? She said, "I don't know!" I asked the other cashier. She stumbled about. There was an employee in line behind me. He told my cashier she could do a price check. I almost needed to cancel the entire order. The sandwich was stale, very stale, so I picked the meat out and ate it. Not what I am used to from a Safeway store. read more

Only big grocery store in town so there's that. Friendly service. Prices on some items seem a lil high. It's open late which is a plus. Same with the friendly service. I was shopping about three PM on September 10, 2023 and walking towards the cash registers from the Pharmacy. There was some kind of water leak with a puddle of water streaching the length of the cash resisters to the front door. No marker. I slipped on the puddle. To my surprise no broken bones. I pulled myself on a vending machine, and to my surprise no one offered to assist me, and it was completely up to me. A clerk shouted "there is a cone by the front door when you came in." Having worked in grocery stores before, I know that there is risk management policies, and the procedures that should have occured. Since I am a senior citizen, the fall could have been really bad with damage to bones and hospitalization. It appears Safeway lacks any kind of risk management training, as an employee of a grocery chain in the past, employees would have been terminated on spot. Was it a cover up job, unknown. SAFEWAY; Safety starts at the management level down. It appears there is no risk management and safety training in the Hawthorne Safeway store. read more

Although I absolutely love most staff at this safeway location. However they don't vet their employees very well. I had to wait an extra 20min for a new cashier because I refuse to have a cashier help me that's out on bond for possibly killing her 2mo old child. Having lived in Hawthorne now for a few years, I can honestly say that this store definitely tries its best with what it is provided with, and happy to report that maybe corporate is now willing to invest more into this store. It is much more organized now, and management is always pleasant to speak with, even if its just casual conversation while shopping. The big plus - the store now offers fresh baked goods like cakes, cookies, donuts, etc. Now all they need is a real full-service deli counter, although there really isn't anywhere to put that. Produce is still hit and miss, though. And the Just4U app is flakey, often unclipping virtual coupons prior to checkout, but cannot blame the store for that. read more

Just your typical run of the mill Vons/Safeway depending on your state. Kind of small on the inside. Hard to find some products like lotion. Nonetheless, did buy a ton of toiletries to bring back to CA. Slot machines in a Safeway? WHAT? Dude, you can gamble while you wait on your prescriptions! Like, that's so groovy! The reason for the 5 star? Troy at the checkout counter. Bought some groceries here today and Troy has the most upbeat, easy going attitude of any cashier I have met. A few years back I was in Hawthorne for work for 3 months straight. I and a coworker rented an apartment and Safeway was a lifesaver and a money saver for me. Instead of eating out at the limited options every night I was in town, I was able to make my own food and eat healthier to boot! The store isn't a supersize store with a operating deli and bakery. It's a smaller footprint than the newer ones, but it hasn't ever disappointed me for the selections of produce or other items. The people are friendly and always helpful with tips. I actually wish this store was my local one. Parking is plentiful out front. They also have some video rental machines if you are so inclined. read more

During a trip to Hawthorne I went to Safeway looking for pumpkins, but it was too early before Halloween. Lee Ann in produce went in the back and found some perfect, if unlikely substitutes.
