Horrible Deli service. Four workers behind the counter three customers in line only one staff helping. Waited for more than 10 minutes.

Just brought a 4 pound tri tip. Cut off so much fat I decided to weigh it, 1.7 pounds of cut off fat and there was still a normal amount on the meat for cooking. Never again will I shop here. read more

Ok its a market, but that is not what wows me about.this place. What does wow me is the perfectly sour sourdough sandwich rolls that you can buy for a dollar. Toast this sucker after you split it open, slather it in butter and this may be the best sliced bread! read more

This store is convenient because it is close to my house, but their lines are ridiculous!! Even the express line is 5-6 people deep. And the typical "busy times" are worse. Very poor management & customer service. read more

I've never been to a grocery store with so much food past it's sell by date. I've seen everything from eggs, to dairy, to frozen packaged foods all old; sometimes months past the date. It's very annoying that I have to check everything before I buy it, and even worse when I get home to find it expired. I don't understand why they can't follow these basic standards and I'm surprised they haven't had any problems with health regulation. read more

I've been shopping at this Vons since I was... 12. They made some changes in past few years and updated the store. I like that they consistently have brand name foods for sale. I'm a sucker for sales. "So... the more I buy, the more I save?" Yeah, right. All the employees are very polite and I like that it is very well kept. I love shopping at Vons in Claremont. Everyone that works there is very friendly and goes out of their way to be helpful. I especially want to recognize Ryan, one of the Assistant Managers. I absolutely love the Superfood Kale Salad in the Deli, and I asked Ryan if Vons could make their Kale Salad more often. I was impressed by how he really cared about my request, and took care of it right away. Ryan made it happen! Now the deli has Kale Salad all the time, and I eat it for lunch several times a week. I love it! Thank you Ryan! I would also like to thank the Deli Manager for always having the Kale Salad. And also, Alex who I see several times a week, and who always helps me out with a friendly smile. There are so many great people that work at Vons. I don't know all their names, but there are a few employees I would like to Yelp about ;). I love Wilson and Renee in the pharmacy. They are the absolute best and totally go out of their way! And my favorite checkers are Renee, Doris, and Rita. They are always so professional, and provide excellent customer service, but also with a personal touch. read more

This store would be 5 stars if it wasn't for the horrendous customer service I received from the cashier. I think the cashier's name started with a r, but I wouldn't know because I didn't take the time to learn her name because she never even asked how I was doing. Between all of her personal conversations and complaining, I'm surprised she could even say hello. read more

I used to LOVE shopping at this Vons, but in the past few months, my star rating has dropped from a 5 to a 3. Overall - The service is good 75% of the time, and the selection is OK when it comes to mainstream products. The reason it has slipped down a few stars is based the last few experiences I have had buying meat at this location. The meat has been off the last 3 times I purchased it. Most recently, I picked up a package of shrimp that was 25% off because it only had 2 days left until the expiration date. I opened up the package at home (20 minutes after buying it), and the shrimp was rancid - it stank up my whole kitchen! Really disgusting. So, I took it back, politely asked for a refund, and the manager snapped at me, "when you buy 25% off shrimp, you have to expect that they will be old or rotten"...What?! Wow...food poisoning at a discount? Thanks. Needless to say, I don't trust the meat selection any longer, and I stick to buying pretty much peanut butter and canned goods at the Claremont Vons. For everything else, I stick to Trader Joe's, Sprouts, or Vons in La Verne. read more

Pharmacy: first I would like to send a big shout out to Mr Wilson in the pharmacy department. This guy went out of his way and did everything above and beyond to get my prescription filled today. And since must doctors offices are close on Saturdays he did EVERYTHING in his power to get my meds. Thank you so much. This is what customer service is all about. I have been shopping here for four years. Mostly, it's OK. I like the checkers. Every single time though, some product is expired or about to expire in dairy or elsewhere. My husband isn't as diligent about checking dates and has bought cheese or milk that expired the next day. I talked to the new manager about the problem six months ago, and it's a little better but still a problem. I have now begun shopping at Sprouts for dairy and better deals on better looking produce. Vons needs to up its game if it wants to stay competitive. read more

I love Vons and shop at another location regularly. I shop at this one when I don't feel like driving to my other one, and I always regret it. Make sure to check the expiration date on everything! I have bought food without checking, only to find out it was expired once I got it home. And not just a day or two past the expiration, most of the time it's months after the expiration. When I went there today, they had a frozen food item with a "use by" date 9 months ago!! The store is pretty tiny also, so if you're a person who doesn't like people in your personal space then don't come here. The aisles are tiny and it's difficult to maneuver a cart around when it's busy. But mainly it's the expiration thing, whoever has that job is failing miserably! read more

Kari is the greatest. I was shopping for my moms birthday and wanted to grab some quick cupcakes. All were bright colors geared more towards a child. She approached me and asked if i needed help. Offered to decorate new ones more fitting for the day. She did a wonderful job and i appreciated the thought and time she took from her work to help me out. She is a great employee. Like other vons, this store is overpriced on most items, though the specials combined with coupons are great deals. The clearance racks are also pretty good, which partially makes up for the produce section often leaving a lot to be desired in terms of quality. Service here tends to be less attentive than at the vons in la verne or upland, and the selection is somewhat limited compared to those same two stores. It's convenient for students at the claremont colleges and local residents, but the five minute drive to the other locations is generally worth it. read more

Ok. Firstly, the prices are really high unless you have a Von's card, which is free to sign up with. Also if you go online there new personal used Von's for You app. is also a great way to save. With a family of 7 and 2 dogs you are always wanting to get the best for your buck!! This store is always clean and the staff are super polite and helpful. My favorite thing? At 4:30pm and again at 6:00pm piping hot fresh French Bread Comes out of their bakery...amazing!! I give it 3 stars simply because the prices are higher than other grocery stores in the area. But it's 3 minutes walk for me... So I frequent it regularly!! read more

It's a Claremont institution as far as I'm concerned, and the upgrades they did a few years back really classes it up. How much can you really say about a grocery store? It's probably not the cheapest and I wouldn't do the bulk of my shopping here but if this is your neighborhood grocery store, you're happy to pop by and pick up a few things. read more

As the nearest grocery store around the Claremont Colleges, it's a lifesaver. Trader Joe's is good too, but they tend to focus more on snacks and specialty items while Vons is just a solid, run-of-the-mill grocery store. They also have a nice alcohol selection. read more

I used to love this Vons.. But lately each time I go in here they don't have what I'm looking for.. The staff isn't as educated with where things are or what they carry.. I asked for a sea weed salad & they tried to tell me caviche was sea weed salad. Another time I asked the barely English speaking meat dept lady for wild caught salmon she tired to give me wild cod.. Eventually she gave me a filet of salmon sold it as wild caught only for me to get home, cook it and discover I paid for wild but got farm raised.if I could give them less than one star I would. I love this grocery store! I am here almost every day. The staff is always friendly and rarely are there long lines! I feel like I save so much money shopping at vons, especially the $5 Friday deals. I also love going to their Starbucks more than others. It is quick and easy, and I feel like they make my drink extra tasty! read more

I've been living down the street from this Vons location for more than 5 years now and I have sworn off shopping there altogether. I now drive at least a mile to frequent other grocery chains. The reasons? Long lines and continually poor service at the register. They have "3's a crowd" signs hanging over each register yet every single time I go, there are lines that are longer than three people with closed registers. Then when you get to the front, the staff (most of the staff) doesn't even talk to you, and stares at the floor. Other times, the staff will spend your entire interaction gossiping with coworkers or talking about when each others' lunch breaks are. I hate automated checkers but at this store it would be an improvement. I understand that the lack of sufficient staff isn't always up to the store (despite the fact that this store is in the middle of a neighborhood with a median household income of $120K...and Vons is on the more expensive end of grocery chains - go ahead, corporate, splurge on hiring enough employees to actually run the business you've opened), but it wouldn't hurt to have friendly service when you finally get up to the front. Maybe corporate could splurge on some interpersonal skills training for staff. I make it a point to be friendly when I am rung up anywhere because I've worked with the public before and it's rough, but this is a problem I've experience with most of the employees for the majority of the times that I have been there (2 -3 times a month for five years), so I don't chalk it up to someone just having a bad day - unless of course everyday someone has to work there is a bad day - again corporate, maybe work on improving employee morale - Claremont Graduate University (right down the street from this location) studies workplace morale extensively. I'm sure you could get a good deal having graduate students there perform high quality workshops and leadership training for student prices. To be fair I haven't used the deli before (who knows, the service there may be great), the store is well kept and there is a lot of variety, and the pharmacy staff is helpful - frankly, I'm just tired of showing up at 10pm and there being a line half way through the store at the one open register while the person working the register and another employee are just shooting it. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to give my money to one of your competitors from now on. read more

We live very nearby, and so we default to this store unfortunately. I am constantly appalled by the amount of old product sitting in the cold section or on the shelves. Numerous times we have inadvertently purchased dairy at or after the sell by date that I believe the staff cunningly leaves out to turn inventory. Produce is very spotty with spoiled fruit often out. Lines are long to boot. Prices seem a bit high due to neighborhood. We have provided feedback numerous times to managers, but they don't seem to care. Perhaps it's the culture of the place/Safeway Corp. I recommend any other store than this one in the area. read more

I frequent this location weekly. I've bought quite a lot of expired cheese here, and many times I go, the Organic Milk I buy is out of stock, The Gatorade too. Seems poorly managed. They are out of stock a lot on things, so I have resorted to going to the location in La Verne. read more

Expensive and practices deceptive pricing. Staff are friendly enough, but why on earth would you shop here when there are (1) healthier food stores less than a mile away and (2) CHEAPER food stores with better selections? I used to shop Vons/Safeway for years, but they have gone downhill recently. Update (2015) - things have improved, and Vons now carries items other stores do not. They are still pricey (without the stupid card that tracks all your purchases), but good for a quick sandwich, smoothie, etc. read more

Around 9am today(8/7/17), I lined up to buy 2 cups of 12 oz. Cuppaccino coffees. The server was an Asian young guy, after all blended in I went home, but when all foams dissipated, both cups had only less than 6 oz. coffee. I wonder I paid $7.60 for 2 cups of coffees, there was only less than 6 oz. in each cup.. I sincerely hope he didn't do this on purpose, but he can do better by looking at the final product see if it's really close to 12 oz.. read more

Saturday morning 8am. Could not get the meats I wanted due to most meats on shelf were all expired 2 to 3 days already. I could not believe what I was seeing. Mixed salads have the same issue. I seem to see this more and more now. Have to check every item I buy to make sure to not bring home a food that is expired. Very disappointing and frustrating. Is the store hoping customers will buy the expired food to get rid of their excess inventory? The store planners should evaluate and adjust how much food they should kept on the shelf at a given time so they do not run into this issue. As a planner myself, I know this is not always easy but customers should not see this much expired food on shelf. It is getting ridiculous. read more

For an ACTUAL grocery store, not a specialty store (Trader Joe's and Sprouts don't offer enough general products for me), I think Von's is pretty good. They have a wide selection of goods, and also relatively good off-brand products (I forget what their particular line of products is called, but it's pretty good). For a Super Market (rather than a small grocery store), Von's is a good choice. read more

There's a guy at the Deli that is awful. He has a crappy attitude and hates his job. I will not go to the deli when he's working. He has helped me at least a half dozen times and the following two experiences are examples of his customer service 1) There were no cups for the soup so when I asked him for one, instead of filling the cups to the soup counter he simply handed me one. Now this would be ok if there was only one size, but I wanted a bigger one. Why didn't I ask for one? Great question. This boy just put one on the counter and walked away. 2) My second interaction with this boy was requesting the right price at the deli. He put in a higher price by $2. When I asked him to fix it, he weighted it and stuck the sticker, placed it on the counter and walked away. I've contacted Vons but no help. Be careful Vons and value your customers because Wholefoods just opened less than 2 miles away!!! read more

I recently shopped at this Vons. When checking out I asked for paper bags instead of plastic. When I got home to unload I realized that the bags had NO handles and the clerk did not double bag anything, even the bags with milk and juice. When I was trying to carry them to my apartment they ripped and almost spilled all over. So I called the store to complain and they simply said OK like they did not care. I will try Sprouts next time.. read more

This Von's is convenient so I shop here a lot. The employees are friendly and competent. The prices seem high And I hate the new program of having to go online to get coupons. Just lower the price or use paper coupons. Who has time to do that online thing? The selection of brands and items has diminished in the past few years. The aisles are crowded and I wish they offered smaller carts. They had smaller carts for a brief while but did not keep them. Overall the convenience keeps me coming back but when I do shop elsewhere I realize that my Von's is lacking a bit. read more

The people are nice. also the flower and balloon department is great. BUT I used to get deli meat and cheese there until I was waited on by a person with cold symptoms, sneezing in the bend of their elbow, sniffles coughing, etc. PLEASE work in a different section of the store if you are going to work sick!!! Also another person, wearing sanitary gloves but wiping down surfaces in the general deli area and then with those same gloves handling the meat! Please educate the staff that the gloves are not used to protect their hands, they're used to protect the customer from contamination. I just can't buy from the deli anymore! yuck. Since the staff make most of the baked goods I am suspicious of those too and dont buy them anymore. The meats are way over priced so i have to shop elsewhere for that unless I am buying hamburger in a tube or chicken about to expire. I totally agree with others about HATING the Just For You program. Too Much WORK and feel like i miss discounts because I am unwilling to do that. Can't you just throw in various discounts into the program that recognizes your vons card? I don't even understand the point of that either. Is it a psychological incentive? Both are dumb business models and make people feel sorry for others who get ripped off just because they don't have a vons card. I am not infrequently tempted to let someone use my card so they don't get cheated. I always use the vons card and I am telling you this store is overpriced. LOWER your prices and more people will shop there. I only go there now if it is super convenient or necessary. Hope they read these reviews and try to do things differently! Maybe Vons won't go out of business if they change their business flaws. Here it is: 1. lower your prices to be competitive with Stater Bros and Super King 2. Get rid of the Vons card or have it used only for gas points 3. Get rid of the Just for You program 4. educate staff in sanitary measures and proper use of gloves. 5. don't let sick employees work the deli. read more
