This Von's is shabby, poorly organized and the help just doesn't seem to care all that much. The bathroom is filthy which make me wonder about the employees handling food here. We recently moved to Carlsbad from Mira Mesa and the Von's in Mira Mesa is MUCH better than this one. The one good thing about Von's as a chain is the wine pricing during sale events. You can get some great bargains. But overall this particular location doesn't cut it. Smart & Final, Stater Bros, Henry's, Jimbo's and Albertson's are all better places to shop. read more

Oh Vons... I used to really enjoy this store but now I'm wondering why? I purchased a small veggie tray and took it back to work one day. When I peeled back the plastic of the tray, the worst aroma filled the entire office. The broccoli was rotten or something. A coworker actually went walking through the office and said "I think something died on the roof". Another coworker roamed throughout the office spraying lysol. It was really bad. The RESTROOM at this Vons. I've never seen anything like it in my life. There was actually human feces smashed and spread all over the floor in front of the toilet. The restroom smelled so disgusting. I've been to a lot of public restrooms in my life and this seriously takes the cake. I'd rather go to any restroom in any gas station along interstate 5 from Mexico to Canada. The only thing this Vons has going for it is the pharmacy. I'm pretty done with this store. read more

Good store with most anything you need obviously since it's a Von's but they never ever have enough lanes open. I think I'm going to take a quick trip to grab a few things. The short drive and walk around the store combined are still less time then I spend in the line each time. I have been driving the extra distance to Albertsons just because of the lines. It's not just once in awhile. It's every trip. And you would think that Sunday mornings their would be at least 2 lanes open but not when I go apparently. I would not normally complain but it happens every time we go, literally every time. read more

I bought a package of celery spears and wasn't very observant, unfortunately the package of spears were NOT acceptable for use! I decided to return them and encountered a most unusual and disturbing response to my request for a refund of ...$1.99... my cashier insisted I produce my receipt because she couldn't believe I had purchased the celery that day...the line was getting long and I had to go through my receipts before she would give me a refund. I finally found my receipt and she begrudgingly gave me my refund, she acted like I was scamming the store and that the $ was coming directly out of her paycheck. This is my local Von's, and although it's in a nice location on El Camino Real in La Costa, it's overall just average. The prices at all Von's seem to be considerably higher than other grocery stores. The employees here are always scarce if you need one, and only a select few of the cashiers are friendly. More times than not I have come to this location and they have been out of the products or brands that I have needed. Parking can be a little hard, and the lines are always REALLY crowded, even the express lanes. Not a fast in-and-out store if that's what you need. read more

Sooo, my husband and I stopped in after having dinner across the street at ignite. We just wanted to pick up a few things and get a Redbox but the husband had to pee... so we walked to the bathrooms in the back. i went to this vons the other day with my babygirl bbl queen and we bought a bag of sealed chips. we thought it was gonna be a delicious devourable scrumpitious bag, but oh no no we thought too soon. when we had ate 2/3 of the bag, we found a nasty oily unhealthy contaminated piece of hair in the bag. we were not happy; hair is dirty and it can give you sickness in your stomach. we went back to vons to ask if we could get a new bag since we were still hungwy hungwy. BUT when we asked a lady in the store politely for a new bag she said we had already eaten sone so no. that made us ferious and holding back tears, we left. they never gave us our deserved new bag of chips, and i still grieve to this day. read more

I have to say that I'm very impressed by the way the Vons pharmacy team (especially Tressa) handled my situation tonight. When I arrived, the phones were ringing off the hook there was a line 3 or four people deep and once it was my turn I had to request to transfer my prescription to Vons from CVS. The interesting part is under all the stress of the phones ringing off the hook and several customers in line, Tressa & Richard took very good care of me. I'm very happy that I transferred my prescription to this Vons pharmacy and that I was lucky enough to get Tressa/Richard to assist me. I can assure you that I'll be a loyal customer to this Vons for many years. read more

The store is getting worse and worse daily. Staff are incompetent and the service is horrible. They don't know how to use the Vons app and how to pay rewards to customers. Customers can't get the rewards they earned in this store because they always reject them and don't know how to handle it. Will never again shop in this store. The express lane is anything but. It's rare that when I visit this store that I don't have to wait in line at checkout. Sometimes for many minutes. It can be maddening if you have to wait in a long, slow line to purchase a few items. I don't understand why the company doesn't install self-checkout in this store, and speed things along. This is a review of the pharmacy. By far the worst service of any pharmacy I have ever been to. I knew they were not a good pharmacy as I have been there before but usually avoid to the long wait times and general incompetence. I don't usually write yelp reviews, however I feel compelled in this case. First off they are closed for lunch during the days busiest hours for errands 1 to 2pm. This is strange! Getting to the point my Dr called in my prescription and I called the pharmacy to make sure it would be ready. I was put on hold on disconnected/or hung up on? for 25 minutes before arriving. As I arrive I tell the pharmacy tech of my experience on the phone and tell them I called to make sure the script was ready because I dont have time to wait they assure me it will be rushed. Well 45 minutes later I finally recieved my prescription(well kind of). They were short 20 pills. I say ok and they assure me it will be fine if I call my Dr he will be able to refill the remainder no problem. Well today I went to pick up the remaining pills and they are closed for lunch. I come back an hour and a half later and a different pharmacist says I can not pick up the pills until I have used the ones they have filled first. They make me call my Dr and have my Dr call them to confirm its ok to fill, even though my Dr was the one who called them in. So totally incompetent. Jan 28 2: 14 pm called to refill my rx "A". Manager told me the prescription is no longer with them (it's at Tahoe Safeway) and I need to call Tahoe Safeway and have them transfer the prescription. Manager tells me once I call to transfer the prescription then it will be ready. I called Tahoe Safeway and they say they are not allowed by law to transfer prescription on my request and that the pharmacy has to call and transfer it Jan 28 2:20 pm I call Vons manager back to tell them that Safeway says they have to call and request it transferred. Vons manager continues to repeat that Safeway has to transfer it and I have to call Safeway to do it. Says "you people" don't ever listen, in response to me saying again I called Safeway twice after Vons manager told me to and Safeway says they legally cannot and that Vons has to do it. Called Dr to schedule appointment next day, got prescription and electronically sent over and handed an in person prescription off. Feb 6 4:00 pm Called to see if rx "A" was filled yet. It wasn't, I ask what's goin on, that I already went through an emotionally exhausting confusing conversation with someone else and detailed the history. I get hung up on. Feb 6 4:04 pm Called back, was infuriated I was hung up on and now was speaking to a different person who asked who I had previously spoken with, "the other woman" "can you be more descriptive?" "I was just on the phone with her she must still be there" "I'm sorry I don't know who you could have spoken with, it's just me here" and I exclaimed "omg! You know what whatever, are my prescriptions are being filled?" "yes, they should be ready tomorrow" Feb 7 3:15 pm Called to see if my prescriptions were ready, was hung up on again Feb 7 3:16 pm Called back and asked if my prescriptions were ready, was told they were not. Feb 10 1:52pm Called to see if my prescriptions were ready, was hung up on. Feb 10 1:53 pm Called back, asked to be transferred to or given the number to file a complaint. Was asked who I wanted to complain about, "I just want to know the information to file a complaint" and was continuously probed to tell who, so I told them it was a woman. "I'm the only woman here and I don't know what you're talking about, what else can you tell me? Who was it?" "I don't know anything else, I've only spoken to her on the phone, I know she was a woman and maybe asian" "i don't mean to sound racist, but I'm the only asian one here" "i don't know what else I could tell you, I didn't see her, I don't know anything about her, and I told you everything I could possibly--" "oh, is this about rx "A"?" "yes, it is" "oh yeah, I heard about that, yeah, that's my manager, she's asian, she's not here right now and she's the one you'd have to talk to about a complaint" later that day I got a text that my prescriptions were ready, I went to pick them up, and the woman handed me a card with the general Vons pharmacy number and said I'd have to talk to the manager for a complaint and there's no other way to do it. I didn't end up filing the complain, I had rationalized not to. Then this week I went to drop off another in person prescription and they said they won't serve me anymore because of my racist comments during my last visit. I asked what comments, they said they don't know, there's a note in my file and i'm not welcome there anymore. I asked how do I remedy this because i've been coming here all my life and he said i'll have to call the manager who won't be back for a couple days. I called, left a message, and no response. 1. It's unprofessional for the misinformation and incorrectly bullying me about my prescription 2. It's unprofessional to repeatedly hang up on customers. 3. It's unprofessional and allows for abuse that there's no way to file a complaint except to speak with the manager 4. It's unprofessional, an abuse of power, and jades the magnitude of a serious issue to label a customer as racist and unable to be served with no checks and balances 5. I think this store suits my needs just fine. It is the closest grocery store to my house, so I am in and out 3 or 4 times a week. I don't do one big shop at one store. Who does that anymore. I really like how clean this place is kept. The staff seem friendly enough and I like that they have a Panda Express inside. Heres a tip: get a few things from the store and pay for it at Panda Express with of course the food you ordered from Panda. Love that orange chicken and noodles. But I will have already picked up the other things that I want, something to drink and maybe a dessert, anything with a bar code. I don't think they have a scale for produce/veggies by the pound. Anyway, that little tip saves me time, which is always good. The people at Panda are very friendly and offer samples, which they are generous in providing. Very well run. The grocery store itself is great for picking up this and that. Although somethings may cost a little more than elsewhere, perhaps a few cents, but it is convenient. Close to the post office, my bank, the library, all of that convenience all in one spot, is hard to beat. Consider the alternative: El Camino Real/Encinitas Blvd...aka Hell. Too much traffic unless you go late and TJ's is open till 9. Life is too short to have that many traffic lights, some of which have lengthy wait times. This is the worst vons I ever been to, I will never comeback here I bought some enfamil infant formula for my new born the box has 8 little bottles and I realize she wasn't drinking it like she used to she would only take like 1 oz so I went and check the expiration date and they were expired, that was the reason why my baby is been crying so much, I was poisoning her I'm so mad this is ther 3rd expired thing I've bought from this vons in a week and they don't accept returns cus of the coronavirus and neither wanna give your money back. I dropped off a prescription for an antibiotic and when I went to pick it up I was quoted 54.00 WITH insurance! I confirmed it was the generic version, and the male pharmacist said that this was the price with my ppo insurance. I decided to get the medication at Costco, and it was only 5.00. I feel like this is price gouging at its finest. I work in the plaza where the Vons is located, and I will never recommend this pharmacy to anyone. read more

This Vons has all the basics that I need from a Vons but now with the renovated Ralph's over on Encinas, I am questioning my love for Vons. I do love that it has a Starbucks inside and I do love that this Vons is open until 1 am (WHAT? Something open past 9pm in Carlsbad! That alone gives it 1 star.) But I wish you had a salad bar or some extra oomph or something. And sometimes I wish you had more cashiers. And sometimes I wish you had better produce. This is the first time I felt humiliated by a lady store manager/supervisor. I told her that when I buy a dozen bagel I normally get a discount it happened that the cashier is young and I was not familiar with and my thought that he is new. So, I ask the lady manager/supervisor which I recognize her by face since I have been shopping at this store for years now. Her response was "oh we don't do that anymore" I told her I just bought a dozen bagel last week and the nice and always smiling older male not the Hispanic guy always gives me a discount? She called me and said that she will ask so that she will also be aware. Did you forget you title? You should know all of this. I have never liked this store much. Prescriptions take a long time to get filled, and sometimes they just "lose" your prescription, and you have to wait all over again to get it filled. This has happened twice to me. Since then I gave up and now I get them filled at Rite Aid. Also, management and training leave lots to be desired. In my last trip to this VONS a few days ago, when the person at the checkstand scanned the fresh baguette I wanted to buy, while sliding it over to the bagger to put in my grocery bag, the bread came out of the [paper bag, and onto the counter. The checker (Trey - Supervisor) proceeded to put the baguette back into the bag and hand it over to the bagger for her to put into my cart. The Bagger kept looking at him in disbelief, and so did I! The counter is so dirty! So I said to him that It had come out of the bag.He looked at me and asked " Oh so do you want a different one?" Well, isn't it obvious??? This just makes me think that they are not very concerned or care about cleanliness or keeping the food safe from getting contaminated. Forget this place and go to Albertsons or Ralphs. read more

Let me add my voice to the growing number of folks that have had terrible experiences with the pharmacy. The level of incompetence is mind-numbing, possibly only exceeded by the apathy. I spent 45 minutes, yesterday, trying to pick up a prescription that I have picked up without any issues dozens of times before at other pharmacies. Why, you might ask, did it take so long? - They could not find the filled prescription. - They had my wife's birthday wrong in their computer system, which set into motion a whole bunch of related problems. - They had our insurance wrong in their computer system and insisted on trying to charge us a $120 co-pay instead of the $25 co-pay. (This was a prescription they had previously filled at the $25 co-pay.) - They insisted on trying to call the insurance company (under the wrong insurance) to prove to me that it should be $120 and got pissy when I tried to tell them they were calling under the wrong policy. (Again, they had filled this prescription under the correct policy previously.) - They did not know how to properly ring up the prescription. (Remember what I said about having this filled before?) - They could not grasp that this prescription had been filled before and actually argued with me that it hadn't been. All they had to do was look in their records to see how it was done and what the charges were. In fact, I had to tell the pharmacist to check the prior order on how to resolve it all. - I was in there on a Monday. I asked to speak to the Pharmacy Manager and was told he would be in on Thursday. I said, "So there is no Manager here today, tomorrow or Wednesday?" I was told, "He'll be in on Thursday, he's on vacation." I said, there's no Asst. Manager?" I was told, no, there is no Asst. Manager. So, apparently, while the Pharmacy Manager was on vacation, there was no management for the pharmacy for at least a week. The last time I was there to pick up a prescription, it only took me a 1/2 an hour (again, for something that should take less than five minutes). That was because they did not properly follow the instructions on how to fill it. And I'm here to tell you, the instructions were not at all difficult - a five year old could have gotten it right. I will never go in there for a prescription again. They make the Pharmaca pharmacy in the same mall look like geniuses (trust me they are not). And they just don't care. If you want a Pharmacy that will get it right and treat you right, go to Walgreens in Encinitas. Trust me, it's worth the 3 mile drive. We used them for four years and would still be there were it not for the fact that they no longer take Anthem BC/Express Scripts. They are smart, caring, proactive and gave excellent customer service. I wish we had never had to leave. read more

I've lived right by this store for 5 years now and somehow find myself back at this Vons from time to time because its so close. The line at night is long and there is no self check out. The store is dirty and they allow day laborers and special interest people beg for your money outside the store. Honestly I've never understood how this store functions in La Costa, as it belongs in Escondido along with its employees. Safe yourself having to return bad milk and go down to Albertsons or up to the new Trader Joes and Stater Brothers. read more

Ever since they added the self checkouts this location has lost all customer service and timely service. It takes forever to check out and the checkers have lost all interest in customer service. Not the best, not the worst. Have been shopping here on and off for 2 years. PROS: -Some of the clerks are nice -During off hours it's never crowded CONS: -Large homeless population frequents this store and hangs out in front -Their quality control is very bad. On several occasions I've purchased food that once I got home found out it was spoiled or wasn't sealed. -A few of their checkers are very rude. One checker spent the entire time she was scanning my order talking to another person and her kids. She didn't acknowledge me. I told her 3 times there was water under my cart. She wasn't listening because she was talking to the other person. When she finished ringing me up and didn't include the water, I told her again. She then yelled at her bagger and said it was his fault. I corrected her and defended the bagger. Her defense was "I was talking to them because they're regular customers." Granted, I don't shop there multiple times a week, but I'm there several times a month. On this trip I spent over $300. Yet I was being ignored because I wasn't "regular."
