It's been a while (like 5 years and a pandemic) since I've been inside Von Maur. In that time, they maintained their level of taste, of excellence of customer service.... Brands that I love and new brands I've not seen before with fantastic looks. I just got some amazing deals on stuff I did NOT go in there to buy today but they were just too beautiful and on super sale! This place is awful when they hire for job they talk to you on the phone you tell them what you want. They say OK just come for the interview then you come to the interview they talk to you so nice they make you sign things they say they're gonna call your references which they're not doing and later on they're like you're not good candidate for work that's what they say after they were telling me that they're gonna take me to work. I've heard from many that Von Maur is the place to go for kids shoes among other things. I had never been, but when I passed it a few days ago and had some time to kill wandered inside for a bit. It's a beautiful department store and everyone who works there could not have been nicer. I was asked over and over if I needed help, but I was just browsing. I did some browsing in the contemporary section and then headed up to kids where I purchased lots of great nike, sports, etc clothing that my boys would love. There was a lot of great sales as well. There aren't department stores around like this any more. Von Maur gives off a Carson's or a Kohl's vibe. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, although there weren't a lot of customers. It had a bit of a dated vibe, and several of the shelves were empty. It just gave me a feeling of sadness. read more

I had no idea Von Maur has a store here. Of course, I don't go to department stores much and that may be why. My mother (90 yrs old) needed makeup and was unhappy with getting it at a drug store. She wanted good makeup so we stopped here. I walked at around the store a little and they do have great quality clothes. And, my mom found exactly what she wanted. Con Maur is a high end retailer, so don't expect discount pricing. However, if you want something of a better quality than you may normally do, this is a great option. read more

I was early for an event nearby and decided to do some window shopping. The store is very clean and organized. There's isn't anything out of place. The clerks were friendly but apprehensive seeing me walking around talking pictures. I was surprised to see only a handful of shoppers in the store. Bought a Hart Schaffner Marx winter coat at Von Maur Glenview in December. Wore it once and then noticed there was a hole in the pocket. I brought it back to the store and kindly asked if they'd do a simple repair. Easy task for a $350 coat. They said I would have to dry clean first before they'd fix. I said "what?, I've only worn the coat once!". They said that's our policy. They didn't offer to exchange. I'm not paying $50 to have a brand new coat dry cleaned. Sorry, Jim Von Maur. I encountered shoppers who would not wear masks while shopping at VonMaur, although signs on the doors to the store said masks required. I was told by manager that corporate decided not to enforce mask rules in their stores. I will choose other places to shop as long as VonMaur has decided not to believe in science and will not support individuals and communities who are working to end the pandemic. read more

I always enjoy coming into a Von Maur's for a leisurely stop, whether it's this one in recent years or the one in Lombard's Yorktown Center from years past. It's a classy department store, and one of the few still around from a retail era now long gone from America. When we come, I rarely come as the shopper, who's the wife. I usually relax in the comfortable chairs by the piano and enjoy a classy, live performance if one is going on. I don't think we have ever bought anything here at their regular prices, which are usually exorbitant, but it's fun to browse, and occasionally you'll see something at a deep discount which might bring it more into my range. The wife does buy a lot of clothing from Von Maur, but it's actually mostly via online shopping with only an occasional physical visit. I've never seen it bustling or busy here, but they have fortunately managed to survive, and for that I am grateful. I wish them continued success in their business endeavors, cuz they got style! We are among countless Chicagoans who felt a sense of irreplaceable loss when Macy's took over Marshall Field's. Though today's Von Maur is not a full-line department store--it focuses on apparel, accessories and cosmetics--the company strives to emulate quality, service, and ethos on a par with old-school retailers like Field's by 'giving the lady what she wants.' Perhaps this would explain their ability to remain profitable through the current retail apocalypse. Simply put, the family-owned company is adroitly managed and their stores offer a unique and amazing shopping experience that you won't get anywhere else. Entering the Glenview store is sort of like walking into the lobby of a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton. It's classy. Noise and lighting are subdued, and tasteful merchandise displays are embellished with antique props and huge artificial flower arrangements. Clutter does not happen here. Every nook and cranny, including the restrooms, is squeaky-clean. The store's nucleus is its airy atrium, where a live pianist performs daily on a baby grand. Here, comfortable chairs and sofas welcome non-shopping family members. A restored Navy biplane that once flew out of the Glenview Naval Air Station formerly on this site is suspended above the escalators. Nearby, a coin-operated animatronic naval officer recites a page from history. I enjoy browsing through the men's department, but I confess that as a retiree, I am not inclined to spend $135 on a shirt to wear to the neighborhood pancake house. My Missus is the shopper. She manages to ferret out some great sale items in the women's department, and also in the "back room" of the shoe department. While she shops, I enjoy chatting with the friendly sales associates, perusing the gift department, and hanging out near the piano. This particular store never seems to be busy; in fact we've observed times when it's quite dead. Wary of the recent attrition of iconic department store nameplates, we shared our concern with a department manager, who assured us that Von Maur was solidly "in the black." No other store in this region can match the superb quality of Von Maur's customer service or their shopper-friendly policies, which include hassle-free returns and exchanges, free shipping/return shipping, free alterations, free giftwrap, and zero-interest credit. read more

This is kind of weird. The store will quarantine merchandise that you return for 5 days in their stock room. But even though they have signs on their doors stating that mask wearing is required in the store, they won't confront customers that aren't wearing masks. Not shopping here anymore. GIVE ME SHOES! Von Maur, while a bit outside of the city, is an excellent destination department store. Comparable to Nordstrom or Bloomie's, Von Maur is typically a bit less crowded, with a bit better customer service. I usually visit the shoe department first as it calls my name as I enter the door. However, there are good finds throughout the store. I once scored a $200 watch for $32. Don't get me wrong, prices are definitely in-line with Nordstrom, but when things go on sale here, they are typically discounted a bit more than at the other stores. The women's clothing gears a bit older, but there are younger finds and lots of jeans to choose from. However - the absolute best thing about Von Maur?! They wrap AND ship for free! Service is always phenomenal - everyone is willing and offering to help, but they aren't overbearing. If you're in the area - definitely a good stop (or drive up! An upscale department store, much like Bloomingdale's or Macy's, but with a better selection than either of those places, especially in the shoe, accessory, and lingerie departments. They carry, for example, nightgowns for women that are romantic without being slutty-- or old lady-ish. The prices are pretty high, but what's on sale is very affordable. Not the place to come for a hip junior's department, unless you want to fork out for those high Free People price tags, but if you're looking for something nice for a formal night out, this will almost certainly have what you're looking for. Classy! Ever so classy! The awesome about this shopping center...the piano player! He was a great piano player and played songs I love. Some Disney music, some Wizard of Oz, he was great! My friends and I were stalking him from behind some columns. The good...They have a pretty good selection of items. I was surprised to see so many cute junior items. The average...prices aren't totally horrible! They are a bit high, even the clearance items are about $25 for a top. Not bad, but not amazing. The bad...wayyyy understaffed. They had one lady covering the young men's and juniors section. We couldn't see anyone in jewelry or hats or purses or scarves. This is the nicest department store I've been to in years. It is well stocked, well staffed, and clean. The staff in all areas of the store are so helpful and friendly! Sue at the Clinique counter, in particular, was really helpful when I went in for some new makeup remover for me and makeup for my mom. The store has many more options than other department stores I have been in recently, and the dressing rooms and women's bathroom are always clean. Along the thread of many other yelp*ers, this Von Maur Store seems quite "dead" on every occasion I have visited. I'm not sure how they keep their doors open, but I am very happy that they find a way to do so. Immaculately clean compared to other departments stores, friendly sales staff, and some very nice bargains make the long trip from downtown every so often worth it's weight in gold! I was able to find three bargains at 75% off on the sales rack and return a mail order item at the same time. I was assisted by Sophia in Women's Better Casual. Being plus size is always a horrific challenge, and I abhor trying on clothes. I am diabetic and have a myriad of other health issues, so I tire easily. Sophia was very friendly, helpful and solicitous, immediately helping me get a snag repaired in a sweater while I waited when I explained that I lived on the Gold Coast and didn't come by very often. All the sales people in the store are nice, but I found Sophia particularly genuine and willing to go the extra mile. In today's sluggish economy, I am often shock when employees don't bend over backwards to put the cherry on the sundae. I really like Von Maur. It's a nice change from the department store hell that is Macy's and Lord and Taylor. It's a little on the pricey side, but at least you don't have to worry about finding your purchase on clearance the following week. This is a pretty big Von Maur, two floors nestled into The Glen shopping center. They have good quality brands and a nice selection of styles. I love their t-shirt selection and the shoe department is nice. If left to my own devices I would spend all my time in only shoes and tshirts anyway. The service is always great, I love their free gift wrapping. While trying on dresses (I bought a cute green one) I left my watch in the dressing room. I didn't call looking for it until about 24 hours later, and they had it, safe and sound in customer service. It was a gift and worth quite a bit of money, I wouldn't spend as much to replace it, so I'm really glad someone was honest enough to turn it in to lost and found. I cannot figure out how to get to the second floor of the parking ramp, but if you can, there is access to Von Maur from both the first and second levels of the parking ramp. read more

I can't believe I'm going to reveal my greatest shoe shopping secret... Von Maur has a clearance shoe room, always stocked with big labels at huge discounts. I got a pair of Michael Kors shoes, originally $139, for $34. That's right. $34. They always have a good selection of sale items. Another example: I just purchased a Juicy Couture dress for $39. Juicy Couture plain t-shirts are more expensive than that! The staff, for the most part, is very helpful and courteous. They were all out of my perfume, so they ordered and I had a phone call that it had arrived in under 48 hours. That's customer service baby! Sure, they may not be having huge blowout sales every month, but there are good deals to be found, and it's true when they say you get what you pay for - prices may be on the higher end, but the service is phenomenal! read more

Find me in and around this store. I love finding great deals on all apparel Mens, Women's, Children, and Young adult. I am not much for name brands, but they house premier fashion labels for shoes and purses, and clothes. I also love the customer service that I was use to when Marshall Field's was still around. My one of many great experiences was trying to find a boy's tie for a friends wedding. I needed four, but this store only had 2 available. The children's department associate helping me out and tried her best to locate the ties while I patiently waited. I ended up leaving my information, and found the ties a few days later in the mailbox. Wonderful customer service and atmosphere. This mall also houses the live pianist with couches for those in the lounging mood. I find that the deals that they mark down are not only for items out of season , in fact still in season items, at reasonable prices. This is like travelling back in time to department stores where you get excellent and focused customer service, where you don't have to dig through clutter, where everything is organized and displays are engaging. I'm not sure what's worse, a store where you can't find anyone to check you out when you want to purchase something (Macy's), or a place where you're harassed like your buying a used car. Von Maur has become the latter. Holy crap! The place isn't THAT big, and I was asked no less than 20 times, by 4 different people if I "needed help", "was finding everything ok", etc. in a couple of cases, by two separate people within less than 20 seconds, who were standing RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER! I went to the one department that that I wasn't harassed in (and ironically I didn't buy anything from) to check out, as a reward to the only person in the store that didn't harass me. The store is great, with a wide variety of quality merchandise, but.... I hope the management sees this and lessens their sales goals/quotas for their employees, because if it were not for the fact that o had some gift cards, I would have literally dropped my merchandise on the floor and said "yes, I need help, pick this stuff up for me" and walked out! read more

Their shoe room is the reason to go here. It's seriously the best thing ever-- you'll see shoes here for up to a half off that are still full price at Nordstroms. I even got my wedding shoes here (on sale! score!) But, I have to admit, the selection of non-sale shoes is great too-- as much as I like a deal, sometimes it's worth paying full price for a great pair of shoes. Their customer service is also another reason for coming, considering Macy's has pissed me off one too many times with their absolute apathy towards their customers.... finding a place that actually still cares about their customers is worth the drive. However, I can't give Von Maur more than 3 stars because (outside of the shoe department) their selection is sad. The sale racks in the young women's department are nearly empty and the full price doesn't seem very special either (especially at those prices). I tried to find an outfit for my mom to wear to my wedding... no such luck. This is a wonderful store. I found some items here that I had not seen in other stores, including Nordstrom. The Customer Service is fantastic, and the store is so quiet and elegant. But even with all of those pluses, their prices are reasonable. Yes, they carry expensive lines, but they carry moderately priced lines too. And their sales and markdowns are terrific! It's a quiet, civilized oasis in an increasingly noisy and ugly world, and I can't see shopping anywhere else ever again! I've been shopping at Von Maur for years. It's funny that people are asking for the Nordstrom comparisons to stop, because while they are indeed two very different stores - they were both founded on the philosophy of offering top tier customer service (not to mention both of the stores have old school piano players on staff). The no interest credit card is a big win. The biggest win is the store's selection. While most Von Maur's are often smaller in comparison to a typical department store, the quality and diverse nature of their stock is definitely something worth talking about. My favorite department: Shoes. Not only is there an amazing sale room, but they also have a unique selection that typically cannot be found at the other Chicagoland department stores. Every time I wear a pair of Von Maur semi-exclusive shoes, I get at least one person complement me & ask me where I found them. In fact, it happened again today. In case you are interested: DV, Style: Drake, Color: Black. (They are available online, although cheaper at VM, $80. I couldn't find them at any other dept store.) I definitely don't mind the 25 minute trek up north to Glenview to head up to The Glen shopping center where this VM is located. This particular store is two stories and has a great selection (if looking for an even bigger selection head out to the Yorktown store). read more
