Oil, vinegar, some spices or seasonings, a few crackers . . . put them all together and you have the basics for a memorable salad or pasta, fish, or meat dish. Vom Fass has just what's needed to do that. Like many similar oil and vinegar stores, Vom Fass has the same variety, but they also go beyond into the less common. The flavored sesame oils for one, as well as the other nut and seed oils, the various kinds of sea salt and peppers, the curries and herb blends, all place Vom Fass apart. In fact, there's so much to choose from, the sampler sets will help with any indecision. Because I prefer smaller amounts, I opted for the small bottles, filled while I watched. Although there's a fee for the bottles, I was told that if I brought them back cleaned, I wouldn't need to buy new bottles when I was ready to try something new. For sampling, Vom Fass has small spoons nearby and the employees are available to fill them for you. I preferred that, really, since the spoons are small and the product can pour out quickly. read more

WOW!!!! I was blown away by the variety of highest quality standard and exotic vinegars, herbal spice blends, sea salts and oils that they offer samples of before you choose which ones that you want to purchase. I tried many before I finally narrowed it down to what my meager budget would allow presently. But oh how I wanted so much more! I could easily spend $500 in there! I wish that I had known years ago about Vom Fass shops and that they have locations in many other cities that I travel to. Their stores are heavenly for gourmet cooks! I walked out with a 100 ml bottle of the Aceto aged balsamic vinegar which is far better than what you will find at most any other store. I also got a 50 ml bottle of the incredible calamansi balsam vinegar that is made with brandy vinegar and 40% calamansi juice which is yellow and has a citrus sweet and sour taste that pairs well with seafood, cocktails and green or fruit salads. And I got a 50 ml bottle of the also incredible, best-I've-ever-had, Waldburg Star Forest Raspberry vinegar. I plan on going back to get some walnut oil to pair with the raspberry vinegar to make a dressing for the watercress salad that I love to make occasionally. I sprinkle toasted walnut pieces and currants into fresh watercress which is so addictive with a great raspberry/walnut oil and black pepper dressing! They also have a section of sea salts, another section with herbs and spices and another with flavored and plain olive oils. They had 2 sample plates out on a counter with 2 different spice/herb blends sprinkled into 2 different olive oils for you to dip small bread cubes into. Both Delish!! They offer their perfect herb/spice combinations in different size amounts to make it so much easier to make great dressings, rubs and dipping oils etc very quickly! Over to the left when you walk into their store you will see a selection of other oils like rose hip, black seed, apricot, coconut, hazelnut etc that I plan to go back for to use medicinally orally and for my hair or skin with added essential oils. For those of you that are into using gourmet, natural fruit syrups for exotic cocktail concoctions, they offer quite a few that would also be great mixed into sparkling water for a virgin refreshment. These would also be great to drizzle over ice cream or incorporate into dessert and chocolate recipes. And I imagine that these would be wonderful to finish a sauce after deglazing the pan for either duck, chicken, cornish hen, goose or pork recipes that would be complimented by the addition of a sweet fruity flavor. And if you need a great housewarming, birthday or Christmas gift, I would recommend their assortment packages, (of either small bottles of the vinegars, or oils, or both combined), that would be a great introduction to some of their most popular varieties that would be appreciated by anyone with an elevated palate. I first came here for a yelp event and was excited to return to purchase their jalapeño olive oil. The employees working during my second visit were friendly and helpful. They answered my questions and assisted me in picking out a gift. They explained what options they have available and then filled the bottle I selected with tasty jalapeño olive oil. The writing on the bottle is pretty messy so I wish I had the option to write on the bottle myself, however, it's what's in the bottle that matters more. My visit was going well until I went to check out. There were two employees working. I stood in front of the counter ready to check out. Another customer walked up to I think return bottles and buy something. Rather than ringing up my item, the other customer was taken first (perhaps because she is a returning customer?). I moved out of the way and walked around to get in line behind her. It took a while for her to check out since they were trying to look up her account. Eventually the other employee stopped what she was doing and rang up my item so that I could leave. Unlike other speciality oil places, they do not offer to wrap up gift items for you. They are also pricier than other shops. However, their products are flavorful and good quality. Plus if you return the bottle, I believe you get a discount. Overall, it was a different experience than I expected, but I am a fan of their olive oils and vinegars. read more

Huge selection of spices, oils, and specialty vinegars. I was in here a couple months ago to see if they carried any organic oils or vinegars. As I looked around the store at a couple dozen different labels, I didn't see the word "organic" anywhere. I asked an employee if any of the vinegars are organic. She paused for a moment and quickly said, "all of them are." Her facial expression and the way she said it made me think she was lying. I then purchased two vanilla bean pods, having called before I came in to make sure they had some in stock. On the phone, I asked if it was organic. The woman said yes. In the store, I looked at the packaging and didn't see "organic" written anywhere. I again asked the woman if it was organic. She quickly said "yes" and had a look on her face that kind of communicated to me that the real answer was no. I purchased the vanilla bean pods and left. I called the next day and asked if any of the vinegars are organic. The girl on the phone said, "no.... but they are from Germany!" I explained that I had been in recently and was told that *all* of the vinegars are organic, but that she was now telling me *none* of them are organic. She reiterated, "they are not organic, but they are made in small batches from Germany." Ok. So the point is that it appears the woman in the store intentionally lied to me when she told me the vinegars and the vanilla beans are organic. Not cool. If you are also on the hunt for some delicious specialty *organic* vinegars, just know that this place doesn't have them-- even if they tell you they do. read more

There are a good number of spices, olive oils, and vinegars to choose from. Also, the lady working was very accommodating, patient, and polite, as she let my family try as many samples as we liked. She was also very educated and informative regarding all the products. We will definitely be back, as this is now our go to for everything spices and oils. read more

A great addition to Waverly Place this olive oil, vinegar and spice store is just too cute. I'm happy to see more of these types of stores popping up around the Triangle. If you're a foodie like me you will really enjoy this specialty store. Not only is VOM FASS a great place to pick up specialty vinegars, oils, and spices it's also an awesome store to purchase some unique gifts for your food loving friends. A friend and I stopped by after having lunch across the street. My friend was talking about cooking and some healthier options and I had told her about some avocado oil I purchased at a store similar to VOM FASS in NYC. How convenient that we spotted this store across the way. We were greeted by a very friendly lady who offered us samples of whatever we would like to try in the store. They also have a cheat sheet of what vinegars and oils mix well together especially when you are making salad dressings etc. I was overwhelmed by all the options so I didn't purchase anything today. But I can't wait to go back and purchase some olive oils and vinegars to experiment with. They also have a nice selection of spices, everything from barbecue spices, Indian Spices, Asian spices, bread dipping sauces and more. The store is well organized into different sections so it's easy to navigate and find what you want. They also have oils that are used for skincare on a separate wall. If you want to purchase anything you can choose the size bottle you want - you have to pay for the bottle as well but as long as you keep the bottle you can always bring it back and refill it. I loved all the gift sets and samples around the store to try. They give you a preferred buyers card when you make your purchase so you can get points every time you come in. Cary definitely needed a store like this and I hope to visit again soon now that I know all that they have I'll be able to decide what I want quite easily. read more

This place is the source for your next creative meal. Penzey's is great for everyday spices, but here I was able to get black truffle peelings, porcini & tartufi salt, amazing olives and infused balsamic vinegar. It's a cook's heaven! The staff are knowledgeable and creative, and really fun to talk with. Plus it's right next to Whisk, another must-go-to if you like to play in the kitchen. read more

My wife and I checked this place out after some music at Waverly Place. At first I thought the shop was small and I wondered how a place like this could stay in business. Then I really started to look around. There are several barrels that look similar to wine barrels. Each has a tap and label that describes what's inside. Most were filled with various types of vinegar. Many were types I had never heard of like strawberry. You can taste any of the vinegar you like and this is the only part I thought was kind of clumsy. To do the tastings you use small micro spoon. These are tiny and hold maybe a few drops of fluid. The store employees will fill them up for you so you can save yourself the embarrassment of dumping a ton of vinegar on the floor. Even after the fact you feel a little silly trying your best to not spill any vinegar from this tiny spoon into your mouth. I think they'd be better off using small dixie cups or crackers to do the tastings. The vinegar's all had a unique and distinct taste. We actually bought a few to use on salads. The labels next to the barrels not only told what the vinegar was but also what recipes it would be good in. I really liked that. Not everyone who comes into these stores is a chef. In another area there is a wall lined with spices that have jars you can open and smell to see if you like the aroma. There was plenty to choose from but to be honest my interest was in the vinegar. You can choose several different bottles for your vinegar. You have to pay for the price of the bottle but my favorite part is the bottles are reusable. You can bring them back to the store and get them refilled. In the end I really liked this place and I can see myself coming back to try the different vinegar and spices. The store employees are very helpful and seem to have a passion for their products. I'm glad stores like this are popping up in Cary. read more

I love the selection of Olive Oils and all the ways I can use them in recipes. I love the combination olive oils I purchased to make the Apple flavored oils to make a great salad at home. I use the sets as gifts to my clients since all I have to do is pick them out. They are already set in a wooden box with a raffia bow...no work for me! read more

The staff was amazing!!! So informative and knowledgeable and friendly!!! A customer in the store recommended the Calamansi Balsamic Vinegar. It is amazing! This is an overpriced franchise and the oils and vinegars are not extraordinary so Im not sure why the prices are so outrageous! We did some checking and it seems each franchise has its own pricing. It seems very gimmicky in order to justify their pricing. One must be paying for the real estate and franchise fees. We called a few different states to inquire about the prices and products because something seemed off. We are writing this because competitively they are twice the price, claiming extraordinary products. They implied the vinegars are organic. However that seems not to be the case. We feel categorically overcharged and very disappointed. We will not return. read more

I would have loved to have liked this place. However, the staff are unfriendly. My husband and I stopped here yesterday with our children after lunch nearby. We waited patiently to be greeted or helped. We were ignored while customers who came after us were offered assistance. Maybe it was because we do not look like people who buy oil or vinegar? Which is an unfortunate assumption to make in so many levels. Even more so in racially diverse Cary, and particularly for adventurous eaters such as us. We were definitely made to feel unwelcome and we left. Suffice it to say that we will not be returning here again. I sincerely hope my review changes the outdated attitude of the owners. read more
