Absolutely LOVE this shop! I've been working my way through their vinegar selection and have tried about a dozen different flavors at this point. My favorites are strawberry and tangerine, but my mom loves the peach and the chocolate flavors. I also treated myself to the picual olive oil for dipping bread and it's so fruity and fresh! Light years better than grocery store olive oil. The store has sample cups around for customers to try all the flavors. I recommend bringing a bottle of water because the vinegar does tend to dry out your throat a bit. They also have a customer loyalty punch card so you can get a free bottle, which is really fun. read more

We visited and toured POO and I walked away ambivalent. It is located in Ashworth's village adjacent to Academy St Bistro. Parking is problematic as the lot is diminutive so spots are at a premium. We lucked out... The shop is medium sized with 2 rooms and check out area. It houses 65+ Balsamic vinegars and Olive oils with varied flavor profiles; sweet, savory, sour, spicy, and everything in between. Our tour guide, one of the proprietors, was knowledgeable, but somewhat aloof. She prepared fresh popcorn and bread for tasting, and offered us fresh apple cider. The oils and vinegars are aged 12-18 years, depending on the product, and stored in fusti's. They sell them in several sizes, and allow for bundles at discounted prices. $7-$20 seemed to be the range. Tuscan oil is there most popular, and sweet balsamics are said to be great on salads/vanilla ice cream. Personally, I gravitated toward the oils with heat, and one in particular (peri peri), transported me back to my 12 year old self enjoying the above in Southern Africa. This is hands down my favorite olive oil store in NC! The ladies there are so nice and super helpful. On hot days they have cold filtered water right at the door for everyone. They have a huge selection of incredible olive oils and balsamics. They even have little cards with suggestions of how to use each oil or balsamic. Amazing customer service and a wide variety of olive oils to choose from. When I arrived there were no other customers and the employee working quickly greeted me and asked if I needed assistance. This was my first visit and I told him I was looking for an olive oil gift for a friend. He led me to the second room with all of the different types of olive oil. He showed me various types and bottle sizes and made recommendations. He also mentioned recipes to make with the olive oils. With his help I was quickly able to choose two types for my friend, which she loved! He then heat sealed the containers and laid out various decorative bags for me to chose from (so that I could find the perfect one for my friend). This place is great. They have at least 30 types of oils and vinegars that you can sample. I bough 2 200ml booths for 22$. Reasonable. It's 7$ for 60ml and 11$ for 200ml. so a 200ml bottle is a better deal. I got the Tuscan and Harissa oils. The employees are super helpful. They know their stuff. Complimentary tea and Keurig is always nice. They have gift baskets and cards. Great holiday presents. I will be back. I love this place. And olive oil. read more

Peak Olive Oil sells straight olive oils, as well as infused flavors and different types of vinegars. There is quite a variety of the above mentioned. Craig, who is the owner I believe, was incredibly friendly and helpful. If you are looking for some dipping oils for some fantastic bread (that you should be picking up by La Farm, which is conveniently a few minutes away), I heartily recommend this place. You can try any and all of the oils and vinegars as you wish. There are tasting cups that are to the side of each product. I purchased the Oro Bailen Picual and Chemlali olive oils and the traditional balsamic vinegar. My husband and I will be back for sure to purchase more of their fresh olive oils! read more

Peak Olive Oil is a retail reseller of Veronica Foods olive oils in a retail location at the corner of High House Road and NW Cary Blvd. Veronica Foods is a California-based oil and vinegar company known for its high quality. It (probably) has the olive oil that you need. It has many different varietals and many different infused oils with many essences and flavors. I also see it as providence that this place is across the road from La Farma - baker of the Triangle's best sourdough bread ("La Farma Bread"). Buy a quarter wheel of this bread and then drive across the road and be prepared for a great experience. First, the people there are nice, super helpful, generous with their time/samples/refreshments. You will find an oil that you like. I used to be an edible oil analyst, so I am speaking with (hopefully) an area of knowledge. Here's the first thing you should know. Most of the virgin olive oil that are available in common grocery stores are not *real* virgin olive oil. First, you want eating oil and cooking oil. Eating oil is the kind that will be eaten as-is - on salads, dipping bread in, and so forth. "Eating' olive oil you want first cold extracted oil. "First" means the oil that comes from the first extraction process - which tends to be the best oil. "Extracted", as opposed to "pressed" just means that it is centrifuged. "Pressed" is actually an inferior process and should generally be avoided. Cold means that no heat has been added and generally means the better tasting oil. Oil taken from pomace tends to be extracted via heat, which is less tasty. Peak Olive Oil has cold first extracted oil. I generally avoid Italian oil as it tends to have the highest "fake" oil, presumably because of organized criminal elements. If you want cheap good cooking oil, look for Spanish oil. They are the world's #1 producer of olives - hence have large supply = low prices. Better yet, buy American-sourced (as opposed to owned). Some famous American brands are still sourced from Italy, including one based upon a prominent one known for its charity and good looking actor-founder. Veronica is certified and should be the real deal. Buy a very small portion of oil. "Virgin" and "Extra virgin" means that it comes with free fatty acids (FFA). This means many things, but generally FFA = rancidity. Take for example a walnut. I used to hate the taste of a whole walnut. Actually, we were all probably raised on eating walnuts that were in the shell a long time and where the oils had gone rancid. You don't hate walnuts. You hate rancid oil. The same with edible oils. A fresh new virgin olive oil will smell like olives. A fresh new cooking olive oil (ie, processed) smells exactly like nothing. Now smell your cooking oil. Smells like cooking oil? What you are actually smelling is rancidity. Oxidation that is making the oil go bad. Quit buying large bottles of oil. Do not buy "Lite", "Extra Lite", or "Blended" oil - this is high-heat refined oil where all the flavor has been taken out of it. You might as well eat a cheaper oil as it is almost exactly the same thing. Peak Olive Oil has some with very low FFA. And get things in an opaque bottle and store oil in a cool place that doesn't heat up. I put mine in the back of a dark closet with a drink cozy around it. Fresh = good. Fresh oil also has essences and flavors that have a short shelf-life. You'll get flavors that you won't get in older oils. Filtered vs. unfiltered is a personal preference. Peak Olive Oil has a lot of different varietals of olives, which tend to focus on the lighter, peppery, sweet types than the heavy muskier types. Approach this like you'd approach a wine. Notice the starting sweetness (if any), any floral/herbal tones, and more often than not a peppery finish in the back of your throat. Pepper is associated with anti-oxidants. Feel the "mouth" of the oil - some are heavier, some are lighter. And don't overthink the health aspect of olive oil. At the end of the day, it is 100% unsaturated fat. Sure some is modestly better for you than others. But the minor benefits are tiny compared to - say, not eating one portion of meat. Go for what tastes good. For about $11, you can get a small bottle of heaven that suits you. Next up: we can chat about the differences in "Balsamic vinegar di Modena (Modena-style)" and actual balsamic vinegar from Modena. Hint: you aren't buying real balsamic vinegar. Real balsamic is prohibitively expensive. And there are huge differences in the quality of "di Modena" styles. Regardless, try Peak Olive Oil's balsamic. Like their olive oil, it is premium priced, but you'll want to pick some up so that your "eating" oil and vinegar is yummy and is no longer that rubbish you've been eating before. read more

I love happening upon great local finds. This is one. If you like to cook, you know the best way to make your dishes taste gourmet is with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Quality olive oil should be a staple in the pantry and what better way to buy it then after you can try it! This store has DOZENS of varieties of olive oil. The varieties of infused oils is impressive. We spent half an hour just trying various varieties. We purchased two bottles. You have 3-4 different bottle size options and the prices are very reasonable. If you ever buy quality olive oil, you know they can be upwards of $35 a bottle. The largest bottle here tops out around $25. The thingI love most about this store is the friendly service. Helpful, inviting and knowledgable. They have the right approach to owning a small, local business. We will go and buy frequently. I am going to give olive oil as holiday gifts this year! Life changing! You have to taste these to really understand. I had been trying to get a friend to try it for a long time and when she finally did she almost wept from joy. Go taste, I beg you, if you are a foodie that is. Having a few of these on hand in your kitchen can take your cooking up a notch with zero added labor. Of course they are all fabulous on salad, but it's much more than that. They add so much flavor to your cooking. They also make great gifts. The customer service was fabulous. I even had a bunch of kids in there with me (not that I'm suggesting it) once and the salesman treated them with such grace and hospitality. They will give you ideas, but a couple of my 'can't live withouts': Pair Blood Orange Olive Oil with Espresso Balsamic, for bread dipping Drizzle the chocolate or the espresso balsamic over fresh strawberries Marinade chicken breasts in 3-4 Tbs each of Oregano Balsamic and Wild Mushroom & Sage olive oil and then grill. Astoundingly good, and couldn't be easier. Those are really the tip of the iceberg. It's even good for you!!!! You can't beat it. Now I'm off to roast sweet potatoes in maple balsamic.
