went to get fabric to drape for my canopy bed. they are rude AF here and talked to me like i was stupid. i get it, i'm not a sewing person but there is no need to be rude. in fact, maybe make it a learning opportunity where you might actually get me interested in learning to do things. they also wouldn't cut my 8 yards of fabric into 2 yard sections that i need & when i asked them how to do it, they blew me off. i started to tell them nevermind, i would go elsewhere but they just started cutting the fabric like they were in a hurry so then i was obligated to buy it. thank god this is a one-time purchase. read more

Hey Vogue Fabrics - the customer is not the enemy. The customer is your friend. Your best friend. Sometimes a simple greeting and smile will help offset any issue. Such as the excruciatingly long wait per transaction. Or a policy that you don't cut individual pieces to needed size. I've been here about 15 times and I've spent a pretty penny. No one greets me, says hello, says thank you for your business. No one laughs, no one smiles. It's a joyless place. The best thing that could happen to this store would be a competitor moving in down the street - that is the only thing that I could imagine jolting them out of their depressing status quo. This store needs positive leadership badly. read more

Clean tons of fabric, always something new -- While good, it can also be bad, because if you're particularly fond of a find -- it's best to get all you can carry home with you .. most things here are not staples. I am forever finding fabrics that inspire me. things I cannot find elsewhere ... lovely textures, high quality - non craptastic fabrics - QUALITY goods... SUIT fabric ... MELTON wool for making coats.... I really have to give it to the buyers here. They DO have staples - and - a generous remnant area .. not a bin ... it's an AREA, a whole department, devoted to ... yes ... REMNANTS!! not tiny ones either... these are GENEROUS sized remnants. The downside is that they close most nights at 5 ... HOWEVER, they are open Mondays and Thursdays until 9!! They don't carry my brand sewing machine - but they DO have a section with used AND new machines, they give classes - AND they keep the store ... CLEAN. read more

First Communion dresses, veils, jeans, there seemed to be no limit. But then it became more difficult to find the supplies to fashion these beautiful creations. She had to go to many faraway lands to acquire these precious pieces. Then one day she found a wondrous "palace" that contained all the sparkly, glittery, lacy and lovely bits and fabrics that she had ever dreamed of. There were friendly people with magical advice. This place always gets my business whenever I need anything, from fabric to upholstery supplies to pins. They have the friggin best selection of GOOD QUALITY, STYLISH fabrics (not cheezy cheapy crap like Joann or Hancock offers) and their prices are very, very fair. I have never gone there and not been able to find something to use. Some of the help is, well, unhelpful, but this is the exception and not the rule. I can usually find someone who will work with me and give me their undivided attention. If they are busy and you think you can go in there with a binder full of sketches to have someone there help you for 2 hours to realize all your sewing and upholstering needs, forget it. Come back at 10am on a Tuesday. Then they will be all ears. Parking can sometimes be an issue, especially on the weekends. There is metered street parking as well as a metered lot across the street. If you've never been, next time you need something, try Vogue first. You will never go anywhere else. read more

I want so badly to love this place. The selection of fabrics is amazing; it's good-quality stuff. All weights of wool, beautiful linens, cotton lawns - I have never gone in here and not fallen in love. Their button collection is fabulous and unique, and they have an entire *room* devoted to lace, ribbon and other trims. All of this is amazing. But the customer service is horrible. It's not just that they are busy (of course they are!) but that the people are truly unhelpful. The bolts of fabric are huge and heavy, and the aisles are narrow. There isn't enough staff to help people carry the bolts, and they don't have carts. And if you are buying several fabrics, you have to either track someone down to get a sample, or haul the bolts through the store. Oh, and you can't take the bolts out of their original room, so if you're, say, trying to match a wool with a cotton, you have to buy your yardage and THEN take it to the other room. In theory you can get a swatch, but the staff is always busy and usually unwilling to do it. The staff often seems to not quite know what they are doing. I don't expect them to walk me through the sewing process, but being able to tell me what the content of a fabric is, would be good. And if they would make sure that the line they are cutting is straight, that would be helpful. They also can't sell you sewing machine accessories unless the person with the key is in...and that person isn't always in. So it's pretty hard to get things when you need them. And this is a small complaint, but relevant: the place has terrible lighting, and no windows. Great for keeping the material from fading, but I have several times purchased fabrics and discovered they are completely the wrong color when I've taken them outside. There are so many things to love about Vogue, but the drawbacks make it very hard! read more

Customer service needs work. This review is for their online store, and the customer service I received over the phone. I placed an order last week online, they have a great selection and placing the order was easy. I never received an email confirmation, but didn't think much of it (which was safe to do since they did receive my order). The next day I received a call saying that one of the swatch cards I ordered was out of stock but that I could replace them with different ones if I wanted to. I did want to, so she put the order on hold and I spent a chunk of time looking for new swatches. The next day I called to edit the order. The person I spoke with said that they had found my original item and shipped it the previous day, but never bothered to call me. A bit annoying since I wasted time, but all is good. A couple of days later I receive the order, and it's the wrong order. Entirely. With a different customer's name and items. I call, they say they have been looking for the order and are happy to have found it. They say they'll email me a label to send back the order (which I never received), and that they'll ship my order to me right away. Things get messed up sometimes, it happens, so I'm cool with it. The problem is that I have an appointment with a dressmaker scheduled and these swatches are essential to that meeting, and I still don't have them in hand. The agent said that she would ship them out that night and they would arrive in time for my appointment. It's now two days later, the package has still not arrived and my appointment is tomorrow morning. I call to inquire about the whereabouts of my package, and they tell me it's in transit and there is nothing they can do. At this point I'm pretty upset. I've tried to be patient, because screw-ups happen, but I feel kind of ignored. I ask if they could overnight a new package for me, and she says no. OK, so what *can* you do for me? I want to do more business with them but if this is how they treat customers (very reasonable, very patient ones), it leaves a really bad impression. She finally says, "We could just give you the swatches, I guess. Would that make you happy". Happy, not really. But an effort, any effort, to accommodate a customer after screwing up is appreciated, yes. I'm open to it being a positive experience from here on, and I'm looking forward to receiving the swatches. This experience alone wouldn't prevent me from placing an order, but that has more to do with how few options there are in this area of the market. I'll revise my review if my future experience changes my impressions. read more

The lovely Deb E and her beloved asked if I would be so kind as to assist them in recovering the seats on their dining room chairs. Being the Martha Stewart wanna-be that I am, I accepted this challenge. This is what prompted our trip to Vogue Fabrics. My cohorts were very excited for my visit. They might have been more excited for me than I was for me but when I arrive and took one look at the wall of buttons, I knew I was done for. I have no idea where my love for buttons came from but I love that there are so many unique and sometimes, funky, buttons out there. Vogue carries a very nice variety for that special project you might have going on. We hit the upholstery fabric. Vogue has a fair selection to choose from although I found myself wishing we had a few more options to look through. After a couple perusals, we settled on two fabrics and headed over to the cut counter. Bernadine was most helpful. We spoke to her about our project and talked foam. We learned that the they will cut the foam to order. All ya gotta do is bring in the seats of your chair and they will cut them to size. This is pretty awesome if you have a quirkily shaped chair like we did. We did have the measurements of our seats and Bernadine cut what we needed. I cannot stress how helpful this woman was. She talked to me about the best way to place and staple the fabric so that it would lie flat and looked finished. The gals are pretty please with the fabric choice. We chose a chenille in two different patterns but in the same tone at $18.99 a yard. It's going to look fab in their living room with their artwork. Needless to say, we are pretty amped up about this project. All in all, I was pretty impressed with Vogue. The handcrafted ribbons by a local artist were quite lovely and they had a great assortment of notions. This place is huge so set aside a good chunk of time, because if you are like me you are bound to spend a solid hour + here. read more

If there's a larger fabric store larger than this one, I haven't seen it. The selection is vast, in the way that can only be achieved by being in business forever. The side benefit is that means the remnant department is also vast. In fact, the remnant area by itself is bigger than many fabric stores. And if you're looking for fabric for projects (I wanted some interesting pieces to silkscreen onto) the half price remnant selection in the extreme back corner is huge. read more

This place is crazy!!! I did not have the best experience here, but I think it was my own fault, and I can see the potential in this great place. I went on a Sunday morning, with no project in mind, and I had a time limit and an event to get to. Both of these things worked against me. I would not come here again without a specific project or a specific need in mind. This place is huge! At least five huge rooms of different kinds of fabrics, buttons, accessories, etc- everything you could possibly need or want. Which means if you're just wandering aimlessly, you're probably going to get overwhelmed. Even on a Sunday morning the place was hopping. One thing I didn't like was that the employees were less than helpful. The store is laid out in a weird way as well, which makes it difficult to find things. This is a mecca for lovers of fabric, stitching, and sewing. Not only do they have several rooms full of different types of fabric, they also offer sewing classes, sewing machine repair, and lots of free advice. When you come here, be prepared to spend at least an hour just browsing. Making decisions about which fabric to buy is even harder! The prices can vary from (say) $4/yard - $80/yard. Be aware of their wierd hours. They're open late only a few days a week. read more

This is the only place I shop for fabric locally. It's either Vogue or NYC's garment district as far as I am concerned. I have been going here for about 20 years. Not so often lately, as my fabric stash seems to be offering up any and everything I need fabric-wise. Yes, they have separate rooms for everything. Yes, you have to pay in each room, god only knows why. No, you will not have sales people tripping over each other to help you. Ok, customer service is kind of ehh, but come on!! Look around! This place is hands down the best for getting fabric. If I knew it existed earlier, I would have never set foot in a JoAnn's. This place is 5 times the size of JoAnn's. My only tip is that you should check out the shelves and baskets of trimmings before you go and have new ones cut. You might find what you were looking for for a lot cheaper. I got 8 yards of lace trim for $4 and ended up finding a similar style in the bin at 10 yards for $3. read more

A real fabric store! I came here on a mission after being disappointed by other local stores and chains that had dismal fabric offerings. This store is large and has a great selection and I eventually found all that I needed. Some advice: if its your first visit, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to look around as the store is big and they have tons of stuff to go through. Especially if you're coming from far way - make the trip worth it! The remnant section was big and had some great stuff. The salespeople were knowledgeable, courteous and helpful. I went during on a Thursday and it wasn't terribly crowded. Their selection was so great I had inspirations for at least 3 more designs and plan to return very soon. Parking was convenient. I ordered 3.5 yards of special occasion fabric from them. After my order shipped, I received a message from "Shawn" stating that they only had 3 yards and had already shipped it to me. I informed Shawn that my project required 3.5 yards and that I wished he would have contacted me BEFORE shipping my order. Shawn responded with the following options: A) you can ship it back and receive your refund minus a restocking fee of $30. However, you would be responsible for return shipping charges. (refund) B) I can exchange the fabric for any other fabric of equivalent value for something we do have 3.5 yards in and also waive the restocking fee. (direct exchange) C) You keep the fabric and I offer you a complimentary 15% off your next purchase as an apology for the inconvenience. (coupon) I asked if I could be discounted on this current order, via 15% refund and he reiterated that the discount would be applied to any future orders. This store is really huge - and they have so much to offer. It's really just rows and rows of fabulous fabric, craft stuff, etc! And the prices were definitely affordable and reasonable. However, minus one star for customer service. I came in with questions and prepared to start a craft project for my wedding but pretty much got ignored and when I asked my question, I got some blank stares. Definitely not the type of customer service that I'm used to at a craft/fabric store. I came out empty-handed and disappointed. read more

Large, well organized fabric store with a wide selection of many fabrics. This was my first foray into a "real" fabric store past Joann's and Hobby Lobby. Every time I go, I am always reminded of what a sewing n00b I am, but I'm also inspired to make something interesting. This was the first place where I strayed from the cutesy cotton print-type fabric purchases and thought "aw hell, why not buy this salmon crepe" and it turned out to be an awesome purchase. Service is okay - I think the people are nice enough at the cutting counter, but you do need to be pretty direct when you want service elsewhere. Once an employee actually laughed at me for asking him a question, but to be fair it was a pretty dumb sewing question. I don't go here much anymore now that I don't live in Evanston but if I'm in the area I enjoy dropping in. read more

This place makes me sad. It was, for many years, one of the premier fabric stores in the Chicago area. Whoever bought it is running it into the ground. The fabrics are ugly and dreary. Notions are unattractively organized and god forbid if you would need some help. Once you have what you need you then descend into the 7th ring of hell to get the order written up by hand in triplicate on a pad of paper from the '50s. Its really grim. Part of the job of sewing & crafts should be the fun of picking out your supplies. This places makes you dread it. Okay, I will admit it. My ottoman is over 60 years old. It belonged to my grand parents and I have had it for many years. Mustard yellow naugahide which began to split. The prices for a new ottoman were sky high, reupholstering also very expensive. So a friend suggested we try to reupholster it ourselves. Thus, our trip to Vogue. My mom used to shop at Vogue when I was in elementary school. It has not changed much, except it now has a diverse group of sales people. We found exactly what we were looking for, on sale, and the clerk made some suggestions which I am very happy with. My ottoman looks so nice now...gone is the mustard yellow. Although this is a local business with an interesting selection of fabrics I have always found the service to be horrible. The attitude is similar to the post office, I might help you if I feel like it, but I'm going to take my sweet time about it. Today I went in and was considering buying some fabric, but there were about 3 people standing around, they don't bother with lines at the cutting table, and 4 employees behind the counter. Only one employee was cutting fabric, very slowly. One was available to ring up a zipper for me, don't know what the other 2 people were there for because they weren't doing anything. I just left without any fabric. I didn't have time to wait half an hour to have something cut. Too bad, I like to support local businesses in general. read more

Unfortunately, the women that work here are among the most hateful, rude women I've ever come across. I almost dread going in just because I know there is no avoiding them. This location has much more selection that downtown, so I often schlepp up to Evanston if I don't want to pay up at Fishman's. Don't mind the disgusting, eroding interior or the sometimes (mostly) sourpuss employees, head right for silks or whatev. Fabric heaven. I've been coming to Vogue Fabrics for years, ever since I was a student at Northwestern and fell in love with the place. You can buy any kind of fabric imaginable here. Anything, including upholstery materials. The staff here is usually very helpful. In the now-closed shop in Water Tower Place, one of the assistants helped me to make my wedding headpiece at a fraction of what I would have paid at retail. If you don't live near a Vogue location, you may want to plan ahead. For example, Vogue has an amazing selection of buttons. If you want to glam up some boring outfits, take out the garments and count/measure the number of buttons you'll need. Chances are you'll find exactly what you didn't know you needed. read more

I love this place. My mom and I went into this place for the first time this week- she was visiting from out of town and has always been in to sewing, thought I would give Vogue a try. We were not disappointed! The fabric selection is incredible. So many beautiful fabrics, prints that will knock your socks off, VARIETY! The price of every piece of fabric I picked up was cheaper than what you would find at Joann's. The great thing about Vogue is the selection- They've got everything- rich silks, wool suiting, lycra, jersey, and the prints are very modern. It's nice to find a fabric store that is devoted to fabric, and is not 75% craft supplies, framing and home decor. The customer service is probably not to everyone's liking but I will forever love Vogue for the fabric selection, not the warm feeling I get from the employees. read more

What a horrible experience! We knew from previous visits that they don't have the best customer service, but now we know that the reason for the poor service comes from the awful example set from the top. While we shopped for material for Halloween costumes, our son was walking the nearby aisle with two long cardboard tubes given to him by clerks to use as part of his costume. He was so happy to have those throwaway tubes for his costume! We instructed him to hold them vertically so we could see him in the next aisle, since he's so small that we couldn't see him otherwise. Without warning and without a word, the store manager appeared from his back room, walked up to our son, who was standing by himself, ripped the tubes out of his hands and tore them in half. Our son was stunned for a moment, then ran over to us and burst into tears. The manager ran to his back room and wouldn't come out to apologize to our son, or to try to explain his inexcusably violent behavior. We came to the store full of ideas and excitement and life; and we left the store feeling damaged and on edge. How I wish there were a JoAnne's or Michael's nearby. It's impossible to be creative when you feel at risk of being assaulted by the store manager. read more

I love going to this store. There assortment of fabric is very broad. They always have the latest fabric fashion. They are a little more pricey than the chain fabric stores, ie hancock and Joann, but I feel extra change is worth it. Also most of there patterns are retail price, and I have yet to purchase one on sale. You must definitely check out there clearance area in the back of the store. I always find good discounted fabric. I have found fabric from everything to making pillows to make a cute skirt, all from the clearance area. read more

This place saved me during competition time! I couldn't find the type of fabric I wanted for mannequin draping anywhere! They actually had a pretty pastel/jade greenish fabric with a glimmery light yellow irridescence to it. haha. It was very pretty on my competition mannequin. I just bought a good deal of fabric here today - for my upcoming show. Yes, the staff is a little grumpy - but I have gotten used to that at most fabric stores. This store tends to be busy, and the customer service is available and good, but you have to ask for it and engage the clerks. Do not expect that they will ask you if you have found everything you need. 10 to 1 they will not. This location is better than the location on Roosevelt, and actually easier to get to if you are taking CTA, just two blocks from the purple line Main street stop. This is especially where you want to go for fabrics that are nice but not outrageously expensive. I was able to buy for a partial fashion show with about $600. Not bad at all. read more

I used to love this place: amazing selection, many wonderful fabrics. I used to come from NW Indiana to visit. It was one of the pluses of moving to the Chicago area. I have much-loved garments sewn from Vogue purchases. But in the last several years, there is less and less that is appealing. More and more that is cheap, boring, in poor taste, or just shoddy. I don't know whether the buyer has changed, or what, but it makes me sad. read more

The staff were mostly unhelpful--everyone just pointing at some general direction instead of just leading me to the pick-up window (it's off hidden and outside of plain sight). This is the Mecca of fabric stores!!!!!!! The only negative is that it's a hit or miss with the employees. Some of them are rude and some are nice. That's why the loss of the star. How can Vogue have less than 4 stars? I feel guilty giving it only four. This place has been around since 1945 and takes up half a city block (they're big blocks). They have an entire remnant room. They have an amazing trim department which takes up a full room (includes a feather section with ostrich & multiple colors of marabou, and a "Beaded Trim" section). They have fringe in a wide variety of colors (OK, only up to 18") and had not only your choice of various gold braids but the gold bullion trim I had trouble finding online. They regularly carry beautiful silk fabrics that I would totally buy if I had a clue what to make with them. They have a giant selection of zippers in various colors and lengths (really, who else has a zipper department?). They have a case full of various rhinestone buttons. They also have various baskets of "goodies" for $1 or 50 cents (fake flowers, misc trim, etc.) and trim remnants. No one does trim remnants. (And some of the random sale items - red, pink and black rhinestone trims for 50% off!) I'd put them up against the stores in the NY fabric district and they'd have nothing to be ashamed of; I ran into a guy from New Orleans who says he comes here to get the sparkly/blingy materials for Mardi Gras. Yes, the fabric can be hit and miss - it's in the nature of the beast. But there are rooms and rooms of it, and if you don't know what you're looking for, the staff will tell you which room to go to. OK, you may get stuff cut in more than one department. Or not - seems to vary. This place is an institution and I love it. Easy parking nearby (at least on a Friday during the day), either metered or free in nearby residential area. Good access to the Metra. read more

I only do little projects so browsing the remnants is a lot of fun and I always come up with more interesting fabrics than I can buy (prices are reasonable, but it adds up). I only wish the cotton fabrics selection were a tiny bit larger, since this is the only thing I ever need. This place reminds me of the Garment District back home, except all in one space, which says a lot. Emma O. mentioned this, though, and it is irritating: The store is partitioned depending on what you get, and each partition has its own cashier, so you end up being sent to some other place across the store with your items half-bought. read more
