Three years later, I should update my experiences at Knit 1. Over the course of nearly four years, Knit 1 has become more than just a store that sells yarn and needles. It's become a warm and welcoming home to me. After my first set of knitting lessons, I found myself drawn here to learn more about knitting. Something about Knit 1 felt comfortable and homey like I wasn't at a yarn store, but Karen's living room knitting. I've been taking open project lessons since 2006. Over the years, I've acculmulated a gorgeous stash of yarns, amazing needles, and most of all memories. I've enjoyed many a night sitting around the table knitting, talking, and snacking on brie, crackers, chocolate, and wine. Sharing a knitting challenge is much more enjoyable in the company of others especially with a few glasses of wine and some delicious French brie. My fellow knitters have been my close friends as we share in other joys in life like engagements, weddings, and babies. Knit 1 has provided a cozy, comforting home for me in Chicago. It's my little piece of Chicago that travels with me wherever I go as I knit a stitch for a baby blanket, a wedding afghan, or my own luxe accessory. Everything I make has a bit of Knit 1 in it from the yarn, the technique, the needles, and the stories surrounding the pattern. Knit 1 is my supplier of a yarn addiction as well as a unique community of friends and knitters who have become my family over the years. I can't imagine knitting or getting my yarn from anywhere else. I look forward to many more years of knitting, friends, and lots of yarn at Knit 1. read more

Knit 1 has always been a warm and kind community, though in the old, small setting, it was often a challenge to find the yarn I wanted (or even find the store--I often walked past it twice before realizing where it was!), but I was always welcome to sit down at the "infamous table" and work, whether I was planning to buy yarn or not! Their old location and new digs are like night and day, respectively. There's still a long table in the center, but there's so much room around it to peruse, dance, have a wedding ceremony (a friend just had a very small ceremony there!), and also just breathe. The yarn is clearly and prominently displayed from lace weight at the left-front, clockwise to bulky at the right-front of the store. They provide a wide array of classes, from beginning knitting or crochet, to the sweater club, where knitters get together to share in the experience of knitting a sweater, getting help from the experts. Today was my first time in Knit 1 and I loved it! I'm not sure why I haven't been here before. The selection is HUGE and organized very well, with a lot of popular hand dyers. The store is not crammed and it's very open and inviting. I was greeted by the owner (I think!) when I first walked in. I'm a crocheter and was interested in their knitting classes. She directed me to their website, which is easy to navigate, and I was able to sign up already. Bummer the May classes were sold out, so make sure to book classes in advance. I've been trying to get my hands on some Hedgehog Fibres for a couple months now (always sold out online and nothing I liked on eBay), so I was elated to see they just had a recent shipment! I browsed the store for awhile uninterrupted or pressured which I really like. Sometimes I feel, as a crocheter, I am dismissed at local yarn shops after revealing that information, but not here. I was taught to knit when I was a kid, but haven't for years. In October I stopped into Knit 1 because I had decided to pick up knitting again. I was met with friendly, knowledgeable women who helped me choosing yarn and needles and offering classes to re-learn this skill. Their classes are friendly and helpful and I have been impressed with the selection of yarns and the assistance of everybody who works there. When the shop was closed by COVID-19, Knit 1 used their creativity to keep their customers informed and able to continue knitting. (Knitting, by the way, has kept me sane these past several months.) They have a daily Instagram Live and we get to see unboxing of new yarns, see the things that they've made and Allyson and Laura keep us entertained with their sunny attitudes. They have guest stars including Grace, who dyes the beautiful Knit 1 exclusive yarns, and Elizabeth, their "executive producer." They also highlight other makers. They are offering virtual shopping by phone or online, as well as by video calls so you can see the lovely yarns you're interested in. Lynn has started making deliveries a few days a week. Today I video chatted with Lynn and she helped me solve a problem I was having with Make 1 Purl stitches. I could not wish for a better place to shop for yarns and accessories. This place is UHHHH-MAYYYYY-ZINGGGGGG. Except for the fact that I need some serious credit card therapy post-visit because I cannot help but buy ALL THE THINGS. Their yarn selection is great and their prices are very reasonable and comparable to other stores or buying online (but you get the added benefit of skipping shipping costs AND you buy local!). They have a number of adorable accessories, too, so if you're friends with a knitter or crocheter, this is a great place to buy gifts. The staff is knowledgeable and quick to help. I was able to check out quickly and easily, as well as ask for advice. In addition to yarn, they have some finished projects scattered with the yarn so you can get inspiration - or just straight up buy the finished item. It's a popular spot for folks to just sit and knit. I might have to overcome my rampant shyness and do this at some point. Big, huge, MAJOR plus: They have a yarn winder and they actually offer to use it, instead of waiting for you to ask! And the service is FREE! If you've ever practically torn your hair out and/or practically ruined an expensive ball of yarn trying to untangle it mid-project, you know how huge this perk is. Lastly, I bought 2 skeins for a project and realized, mid-project, that I actually needed 3. I frantically called them and they still had 3 skeins of the same dye lot in stock! They set all 3 skeins aside under my name until I came in to pick up 1. Truly lifesavers! read more

For about a decade I've been saying I was going to learn how to crochet. I've been to some other yarn stores in the area, and they will help, but not really teach. I had beginning crochet with Grace, and it was an absolute joy. She was very patient with everyone in the class who were at all different levels. Started a second "block of the month" club with her as well. I also love the selection of yarn. Some of the specialty yarn stores don't have anything to buy under $20 or so. It was a relief to find yarn around the $10 range because when learning what you like, it's all too often that you don't even use all of what you have. I have found every employee I have encountered there to be great, friendly, and resourceful. I'm so glad I found this place!! read more

First and foremost: if you're a vegan, and don't knit with wool, this is not the store for you. And that's fine. I'd never give a yarn store only one star for having mostly wool (and even only wool). Most yarn shops have mostly wool yarn. I do not have particularly strong feelings, either, about the apparently controversial large table in the middle of the store. I am sure it comes in handy. But. As little as I relish giving a business a bad review, what else can I do when I leave a store feeling like my business was simply not wanted? At best, I can't help but think that whomever is working there (in this case, a woman with long, gray hair) is a poor salesperson. I had come into the place ready and willing to drop $60. I had journeyed a long way in the snow to get to the place, and was ready to buy yarn for a baby blanket. The problem arose when I asked for non-wool yarn and I somehow offended the sensibilities of the woman working there. I asked for the usual alternatives: cotton or acrylic (forgetting, for instance, about bamboo and hemp). She said that she didn't have much cotton - okay, no problem, what do you have, I am definitely interested. But then she starts talking about how acrylic comes from China and she doesn't want to order anything from China. Right. Good luck avoiding any product made in China. Really, I wish you well. Things start going downhilll when she goes on to tell me (assuming that the reason I didn't want wool had to do with animals, and not allergies: she happened to assume right) that sheep need to be shorn. Okay, fine, whatever. I told her, politely, I didn't want to "get into a whole 'thing' (i.e. long, fruitless discussion) about it." I don't like to use wool - most people don't "get" the reason why, and I don't feel like explaining at the moment. (I thought I was actually doing her a favor by not explaining why, since she obviously was of a different mind.) My thinking at this point is, just sell me some darn cotton yarn, okay? Then, she decides to bring up the "a" word again: acrylic. This was the point where I began to realize that as someone who doesn't knit with wool, I simply wasn't her kind of customer. She summed up by telling me that she didn't want to clothe her loved ones in petroleum. I felt like I was going to have to beg her to sell me the cotton yarn if I decided to go ahead and fork over my cash to her, which was seeming nuts at this point. I simply couldn't stomach it, and so I put down the yarn and said - again, politely and quietly - that I would just shop elsewhere. And she was fine with that. The thing I want to emphasize is that even though I am a vegan and into animal rights, I didn't try to promote any of that; when she mentioned about China, I said that we all kind of have to choose our "sin," meaning that everything we do or buy or produce affects someone or something else - often in a negative way. We choose what we do based on our values, and everyone has different values. She doesn't want stuff made in China, and I don't want stuff made from animals. I kind of wish I DID tell her exactly why I didn't buy wool - I think I disappointed her by not throwing paint on her yarn. I left the store just disappointed, because it took me ages to get there. I found this place through Daily Candy last year- this is far and away my favorite yarn store in Chicago! If you're knitting something special and want some yarn that's special too, do yourself a favor and visit Knit 1! The owner Karen is super nice and knowledgeable. She's very down to earth and unpretentious. Her store's a great environment to hang out in and talk knitting or look through all the beautiful yarns. So this isn't your Grandma's knitting store- Knit 1 specializes in yarns that you won't find anywhere else! So in addition to having the best price on Cascade 220, they have a wide selection of AMAZING hand spun yarns. For some you'll pay a little extra, but they'll be special one of a kind yarns- they're hand spun specifically for Knit 1 from a private farm of rescued sheep in Wi. They're even labeled with a little picture and the name of the actual sheep who was the previous owner, how do you beat that!?! I'll tell you how you beat that- you beat that with a great selection of needles. I've found hand made in the USA knitting needles here- needles made in South Carolina, not by some child labor in China! As a fast continental knitter, I was also happy to discover the super fast Addi Turbos (my favorite) here, in addition to a good selection of Clovers. Oh the best part- the store's open until 9PM on weekdays! I can actually stop in after work if I want. Why don't more specialty stores cater their hours to the employed this way? I started going to K1 in 2008, when Karen still owned it, and she opened up a whole world of better yarns and more interesting techniques to me. When I heard it may be closing, I was sad because it's a wonderful, cozy place to knit and learn new things. Lynn took over the store and it is a true gem and my favorite place to spend my time. The group of knitters (both men and women) that assemble here on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons are among the nicest, funniest people I've met. As for the shop itself, Lynn has added her personal touch to an already fabulous store by asking knitters what THEY want to see in her shop, being very willing to order what she doesn't have in stock, and helping a knitter find the perfect yarn, needle or accessory for the project. She really takes the time to know you as a person, not simply a customer, and I'm honored to be considered a friend. The yarn selection is edited but far from limited. The price range encompasses everyone's pocketbook, and the displays are very easy on the eyes. I find myself gazing around as I knit, wondering what my next project will be made of. Accessories, such as needles, needle cases and other notions are vast and varied. Again, if it's not in stock, it's ordered with a smile. Lynn recently added an employee, Cori, to help cover the hours in the shop. Cori is a very accomplished knitter and has helped me often as I struggle through new projects. She always offers the assistance with a smile and easy to understand instructions. I've never heard an unkind word from her mouth, even when I know I'm frustrating her. I have often deliberated with my husband on the possibility of opening a yarn shop. You see, I'm the type to get into a hobby, (surfing, sewing, knitting, et al), and REALLY GET INTO IT. In all my travels I have seen many yarn shops. There are homey ones, cold ones, too-cool-for-school ones, poseur ones that want to be cool, and bad old lady style ones. But in the end, there are really only two kinds of yarn shop owners: Those, like me, who are in it for the wrong reasons (trendiness, fame, money, free yarn), and those who are in it for the right reasons (sharing the love of fibers and fiber arts). If you have ever met someone who actually gets all a-quiver at the idea of petting balls of wool, you know what I'm talking about. Remember when you went to that childhood friend's house after school, the one with the hippie mom who had dog hair all over her pants, and gave you big hugs and hot chocolate and told you it's okay to be mad at the boy who pulled your hair? She gets it. A great yarn shop is like being at her house. It's the most comforting place in the world. You just want to throw all your money at the place and have them teach you how to knit cables without a cable needle, or their top secret way to knit in the ends when you change yarn balls instead of weaving them in with a plastic needle. The ladies at Knit 1 can teach you this! And they won't get snippy and politely suggest you purchase one of their classes. They will offer you a coaster at the table when you gingerly place your coffee cup by the front door. They will praise your hard knitting work and lament with you about your noisy neighbors or bitchy sister. They will let you sit for as long as you like and never make you feel like you're being a burden by asking a question. They will email you a sock pattern when you tell them you're having trouble remembering how many stitches to pick up after you turn a heel. After a while, the hen party gets to be a bit much and you go on your merry way, but your heart is warmed by the sheer love of the wool and all its accompanying counterparts. I'm stingy with my stars, and I didn't give the fifth because the selection could be bigger, in all categories: yarn and needle and books. In search of some new yarn to make some toddler scarves I went on yelp and found this little yarn store walking distance from my work, perfect! I walk in and there was one person working and one other customer. The employee said nothing to me, she didn't look up from her own project and when the other customer asked questions she looked and sounded annoyed. Honestly the yarn was expensive $15 and up a skein and a small selection. The giant table in the middle makes it awkward, especially when you are trying to fit yourself around the one employee who seems to care less you are there. I didn't buy anything because they were more expensive then I was looking to spend and didn't carry what I was looking for (multi-colored yarn). I doubt Ill go back. read more

Nice yarn, good location and nice space. Bought two skeins of yarn, had them wound, and wanted to exchange one for a different color. They don't accept returns on yarn cakes even when they wound it, the tag is still on it, and I have a receipt. Stores have this policy and I get it if I wound it myself. But I think LYS should go above and beyond online retail. Every time I'm in this store a customer is complaining, or on the phone complaining, or the employees are discussing problems with returns. At some point it's not the customer that's the issue. A little flexibility goes a long way when you want walk-in business. p.s. Watch "give em the pickle" video on customer service. I popped into Knit 1 for the first time during their Bobmas Eve party (to celebrate the anniversary of http://www.ravelry.com/) and hung out for a bit with fellow Yelper Carrie M and some other very nice knitters. While the snacks and wine were probably only around because of the party, the very nice knitters seem to be a standard here. Karen and Lynn are super nice, and they're also wicked talented knitters. The selection here isn't as huge as some yarn stores I've been to, but the yarns they have are fantastic. I bought a couple of skeins of Malabrigo Silky Merino, and I'm kind of in love with it. Also, some of the colorways are just luscious...I don't know what I'd make with some of the yarns here, but I'd buy the yarn just because it's so pretty. The store is super cute, too. It's small, but very cozy. I'm a big fan of the orange wall, and the big white cubes that hold the yarn are functional and pretty. My yarn stash is way too huge for my own good, but I know that if I need something pretty to knit with, I can come in here! read more

Knit 1 is my favorite Chicago yarn store. Yes, it is small, but there is still a rather large selection of yarn in different price categories. Lynn, (the owner), and Cory are very friendly and helpful in guiding you along in your project. I am a relatively new knitter and have completed some lovely projects using the yarn and encouragement from this LYS. Recently, I began a crochet class here too, since I know nothing about crochet. However even 'die hard' knitters can make use of crochet now and then. Cory is a very patient teacher. With regard to the other reviewers complaining about people at the table, that is one thing I love best about this store. Sitting down at the table to work on a project with some delightful people. Totally digging it! I was there for my very first knitting class and it was a success, I think. I'll know more when I complete something. So far, I'm not able to actually knit anything of substance. What a cozy spot. I felt more like I was in someone's home than in a shop. A huge table in the middle invites you to sit and stay a while. I am not a fan of this place, bummer too because it is so close to where I live and work. It is really crowded and feels a little awkward to walk into because it feels like someone's unwelcoming dining room (with the gigantic table in the middle). Crochet hooks exchanged for knitting needles. I'm in a bind. And my friend is left with cold hands. Answer: Knit 1. I walk in on a Wednesday evening on something that resembles a joyous living room gathering of crafty friends more than a commercial establishment. The environment? A cozy nook, beautiful yarns at the perimeter, a welcoming table front and center. Cookies about the table. Conversation of family, new babies, latest news. Someone on a chair measuring the height of a man making a lovely cabled sweater. Laughter. Beautiful goodies strewn about. So, I walked in for a quick consultation. I walked out in love. My mitten fixing was assisted by a quick and funny woman who lent crochet hooks and darning needles, supplied the closest match of yarn from the lending library, and, without hesitation, gave of her time and skill to get my mitten faux pas done in no time. After pursuing the shelves stocked with beautiful yarn (what I would call "special occasion" or "present" yarn - a tad pricey. But gorgeous), I left with a smile and a new found desire to pick up my knitting needles again. From our discussion, I learned that: * Most nights they are open till a work friendly 8:30pm (the coffee shop next door even closes earlier!) * They have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays * Wednesday is that familial knitting circle night I described. Very small knitting store with very small inventory. They're helpful, though, and that can be a hard thing to find in a knitting store. I only went in for a pair of needles, and they had several pairs of what I wanted, got them for me quickly, and didn't give me any guff. The needles were fairly reasonably priced, I thought - a little more than most online places, but with no shipping so it evens out. Yo yo yo! I went back to Knit 1 last week and I decided that I had to up them to 4 stars. It's a nice store with lovely yarn and I hate it because I spend like $4 million there when I go (which is weird because it really is pretty small). The woman who I assume is the owner or something, she's great. Really helpful, really nice, so so friendly. Again, it's tiny tiny, so if you want a much larger selection, I suggest Loopy Yarns in the South Loop. But Knit 1 is near my house, has nice (but pricey) yarn and tons of needles, and a great atmosphere. It's so comfortable. She was also kind enough to recommend some knitting groups in the area, since I'm still relatively new to Chicago and know absolutely no crafters besides me. read more

I adore this store and I adore even more how close it is to some of my favorite things. I love that I can find something new every time I go here and I love that everyone who works here is simultaneously trying to teach in a friendly way all while allowing you to peek around the store at your own pace. I'm constantly surprised at how few yarn stores are around the city, but knowing that, not surprised at how busy this store can get. Don't be hesitant to ask if you can't find anything. Sometimes they switch up the way they feature things, and there's always something wonderful to find here. I've been here less than a month and I already found "my" LYS. Lynn is just lovely and I've never had a store offer to order yarn for me before! They have an excellently curated collection (Malabrigo, Madtosh, Brooklyn Tweed, Juniper Moon, etc) and no acrylic in sight. I'm surprised to hear there's been so much controversy over the big table (), but I personally love when stores give customers a place to come in and sit to knit or ask questions. I've come by to stitch and bitch twice now and always felt very welcomed both by others and by the shop.
