I flew in for an important doctor visit and I happened upon Three Bags Full Knitting and fell in love. Cozy, friendly, helpful.

I have been here many times and it is always the same, . . . warm & friendly & helpful staff, super clean & organized, large selection of fibers/colors/variety of yarns, and gorgeous "samples" of projects throughout the store to inspire and amaze me. The environment is like coming to a friends house to knit. . . a friend who can help you with a problem, advise you with your next project, has tons of yarn, and then sit at her table an chat for a while. My daughter and I took a class this spring together with Linette (sp?). This was the perfect "First Knitting experience" for us. She was so calm, supportive, encouraging, and friendly that we would go early to our class every week just so we could walk around and see what else was going on in the shop. While our class was going on, there were other classes going on that we could "voyeur" into. We loved watching the experienced knitters working on sweaters, yarn critters/animals/forest people, and looking through their books of completed projects. It was a huge sharing and supportive community of women. After 4 fantastic weeks of lessons, my daughter has a poncho and most of a sweater completed (she's a fast/focused knitter!) and I finished a gorgeous scarf/shawl. We are so ready to sign up for more. Thanks to this lovely shop - we've become forever knitters! Our only wish is that they were closer. We'd be broke! read more

Today, the staff bent over backwards helping me resolve a problem locating the right alpaca yarn. They didn't talk down to my 'newness' to the craft and supported me in finding exactly what I needed. Will post a photo when done. They are currently making appointments for service. Once inside, I wanted to linger forever admiring all the completed projects I now want to make!! The short of it is that this knitting studio has a varied array of yarns and supplies. I've consistently been impressed with the selection. I've traveled around the tristate area and visited several different yarn shops, but this easily has one of the bigger varieties. I've been able to try several different types of yarn because of this shop. (And by try I mean, squish and thusly add to my stash...) The staff is always so friendly. This kindness has been one of the reasons I've gone back every time. They've helped me when I've run into those "umm, what happened here, I need some help..." situations with a project. Lynette is there most times I've been in, and she's so lovely. I always look forward to seeing her. There is a large selection of sale yarns in the back, very much a "take my money!!" section. If you're a little intimidated by the $30 silk skeins in some spots, check out the sale yarns, and you will likely find something delicious there. (Don't be scared off by my mention of those- many of the yarns are much less expensive than that!) Last winter holiday season they had the annual sale, and I picked up some gorgeous needles. Favorite set I picked up from that time was a set of ebony needles from Lunar. I love that they carry such an vast selection. I discovered my new favorite needles here, too, the Lykke driftwood needles. Picked up 2 sets of circulars for hats, and absolutely love them. One thing I feel like bears mentioning too, is that everything is VERY well placed and organized. I never feel like I have to walk around in circles trying to find things, because it's crammed in. Many stores make me feel claustrophobic, but this shop is open and very intuitive with where things are placed. They have a beautiful collection of Malabringo yarns. This was the first shop I discovered Manos del Uruguay. Many shops I've been in seem afraid to carry some of the brighter colors, but Three Bags Full is like stepping into a rainbow. I never fail to break into a smile and feel so much happier when I walk through the doors. Definitely the go-to yarn shop. read more

They hold strict on their appointment needed. Being cooped up with Shelter in Place for so long, a friend in my tiny bubble and I ventured out today to visit a few local yarn stores. We were trying to avoid shopping internet and supporting local vs other LYS's further away. We started at a location in Evanston, which claimed to only allow 2 patrons at a time to shop, but by the time we left had like 6-7 people inside plus staff. A little difficult to keep 6 feet, but I didn't feel uncomfortable. Then on to 3 Bags. We unintentionally arrived 15 minutes before closing. At the door when we knocked (a sign said we could), we were asked if we had appointments and said no, didn't know we needed one. She offered for us to wait outside (too many people inside, LOVED this). We said no problem we would wait. Next she tells us the shop does close at 3pm. I asked the time, she said basically quarter to. So I questioned if it made sense to wait or could we possibly not be allowed in. She said she had some big shoppers and probably not. She did offer to make us an appointment for another day, but I explained we had traveled from the city, about 30 miles and we didn't need to come back. She turned and locked the door. Ok, Covid, I get it. But this is the second time I have visited this shop and the second time felt 'unworthy' for their services. The first time I went during a week day. Several women were sitting at the class table, and a few were milling about the store. No clue who worked there or was a customer. When a staff member did 'assist me' I felt like it was more get me out than to really help. That trip I had only purchased one set of hard to find needles and left. This trip, my companion would have loved to have been asked if there was something specific we were looking for. After we got in the car, she said she saw the replacement she needed for her ChaioGoo set when looking over the clerk's shoulder into the store. She would have been happy if they would have asked if we needed something specific and then curbside. I said let's call, but she was not happy with the service either and didn't need it that badly. Neither of us will be going back. If you are not in their 'circle' I feel you are unwelcome. read more

Despite the BFA, I'm really not much of an arts & crafts kinda person... But I can tell when a place really knows their crafts, and caters to their crafty patrons. Three Bags Full has a really nice selection of quality materials - no bargain bin stuff, but also not outrageously priced. They have a nice assortment of tools, accessories, and patterns as well. In addition to what they sell, they also provide a very comfortable looking work area for folks to stitch n' share and they host regular knitting events. My better half likes Three Bags Full Knitting Studio very much, and when she's happy - I'm happy. read more

It kills me that I am actually going to give a yarn shop only two stars. However, I feel that two stars is WAY too generous to begin with. This is not one of my normal yarn shops. Actually, I've only been here one other time and that was at least five years ago. However, I am making socks as a birthday present and this was close to the recipient's home so that's where we went. The Space: Much larger than the other location. Doesn't have a warm, fuzzy feel like other shops I've been in. Layout: Just ok. Selection: Underwhelming. I really was surprised by the lack of selection. I guess since I've been to "yarn heaven" I expect all yarn shops to have the same degree of selection. Staff: This was the icing on the cake for me. . . of all the people working there, I only encountered one person who was truly genuinely nice and helpful. (This is the only reason I'm giving the place two stars instead of one) I felt everyone else was kind of snotty and rude. Especially when the person I was with asked about knitting lessons. Their questions were received with short, rude responses. The Bottom Line: This visit to Three Bags Full Knitting Studio will be my last one. read more

I was a little confused when trying to find the place, I didn't realize it was in a little shopping center, but I found it, and I'm very happy I did. I was looking for a specific yarn, I didn't see it, I asked if they had it, and they directed me to it. Nothing special, but very nice. I bought my yarn, they wound it up, and that's when the extra special things started happening. I was talking with a very nice, lovely, and helpful lady named Joan who spent a lot of time talking to me about techniques, yarns, books, and everything else I had questions about. I'm a new knitter, so advice from an expert is always welcome. I didn't feel like I was intruding in a cool club by ANY of the people who were working there. There was a table of ladies knitting who I felt gave me the stink eye when I got a little too close to their table, but no big deal! Nice yarn so it's not cheap, but seems like fair prices. read more

I had been to the old location several times over the years. It originally was in a quaint little renovated house which always had a good selection. Now they have moved to a new location and I was finally able check it out last week. I wasn't disappointed. The new location is in a strip mall (but don't hold that against them). The shop is much bigger than the previous one. It's not cramped, you can freely walk around. I was greeted by the owner, Lynette, who has always been friendly and helpful. It's nice to see that hasn't changed with the new digs. The rest of the employees were also very helpful. It looks like they have more new yarns, as well. I have never taken any classes here. However, the new location is spacious and very conducive to classes. As a matter of fact, my visit was during a Kid's Knitting Class. Even though there was a table full of children knitting in the shop, I was able to move around. I was not bothered by the class or students nor did I have to walk over people or their stuff to get to any yarn. This is a big plus in my book. I know space can be an issue for yarn shops who conduct classes. Their yarn selection caters to knitters of all levels. If you are a sock knitter, there is a wall of Koigu. If you like chunky, bulky yarn, there is a selection of that, too. Don't be fooled by the yarn out on display. They carry a lot of Cascade 220 colors, so you will see their selection of colors. If you need more, ask. They will happily get as many as you need. If they are out of a specific yarn or color, they will do their best to get it for you. Pricing is reasonable. You have to remember this is a specialty shop, so you won't get the discounted craft store pricing. I've compared the prices of some skeins at Three Bags Full to those from various brick-and-mortar shops in the Chicago area and their pricing is competitive. Translation: it didn't feel like I was going to get ripped off here. Always a plus in my book. They had several brands of needles. They carry quite a bit of bags, books, magazines, and additional accessories. Another plus is this location has a parking lot. A big one. I'm glad I was finally able to go to this new location. I would definitely be going back if I'm in the area, if I need a specific item or if I just wanted to see if any new items arrived. I think the first reviewer may have visited the shop when it was in between locations. There were a few months at the end of 2008 when they were in a temporary space. I would definitely recommend giving it a second chance if the only impression was from the temporary location. And if you're thirsty, Starbucks is right next door. Coffee and yarn. Whenever I'm in Northbrook, I stop by to visit Lynette & her store. Besides the comfy seating arrangements that's always changing, the yarn stock is absolutely amazing and I love the customized wooden shelving that she ordered to display all the yarn ... a truly blissful place! Its easy parking with a Starbucks, Ace Hardware, and Dollar Store a few doors down. There's also a Sunset Foods, Book Bin, post office, and hallmark store across the street ... gotta love the one stop shopping!!! =) read more

In their new location, this shop has a wonderful, warm atmosphere and a staff that is always helpful and attentive. I've always felt welcome and have rarely left without a new yarn to try. I just love this shop. Its newly opened location is so cozy and inviting and the yarn selection is amazing. They carry such a broad variety of yarns that you can always find something to fit what you are looking for. The best part, though, is the customer service. I can't count how many times I've walked in and been in a quandary about what to buy for a particular project, or to match a particular colorway. The people who work there are very friendly and always so ready to help you. But at the same time, if you just want to browse they really give you your space - I love that. I've been to other yarn shops in the area and I'm happy to say that I've finally found my "home." First of all, the yarn selection is pretty awesome. They have everything from budget yarns to the luxury, expensive stuff. The prices seem very reasonable. Second, the people who work there are really great. I was able to walk in on a Saturday and sign up for a class that started the following Monday. They were nice and warm, but not at all pushy. They even helped me find a yarn that was on sale to bring to my class, since it was just a practice/beginner class. Finally, the classes are outstanding. The teacher was incredibly patient and kind and helped me even when I was little bit behind the rest of the students. I'm planning on hanging out here a lot. I went to Three Bags Full for the first time on the day after it opened in its new location. I knew it had just opened so was really just browsing but found the staff very attentive and helpful. I could tell that they were still unpacking and trying to remember where things had been stored or stocked yet I did not feel that I was in the way or taking the staff away from their tasks with my questions. The store is bright and cheerful and I look forward to going back again since I know that there will be more yarn out for me to pet and buy. read more

I took a class in knitting socks here. The instructor, Adrian, was just great - patient and explained things so well. She even gave us a guide with the instructions. The people working there seemed nice and the yarns are beautiful. Someone I know goes to a knitting group here and loves it. Only drawback, is that the price of yarns is a bit much for my pocketbook. I've been coming to this shop for 12 years, taking lessons once a week. I have an amazing instructor and love the ladies in my on going class. The shop is well run and the staff is very helpful in helping you choose a project and the yarn. They are often available to answer questions and fix knitting mistakes in between my class sessions. I don''t need to go to any other store. This store has it all. They have a great selection of yarns, from fancy stuff to a soft wool. The staff are super friendly and helpful, especially the owner. There's lots of space so you can stand around and chat or sit at a table and knit. There's a lovely sofa by a cozy corner fireplace which is very inviting. I went to this yarn store for the third time today. I was on my lunch hour the day before a long weekend so I was just wanting to look around and admire the yarn. The shop is very big and has what I'm sure is a great selection of yarn. However, the staff is very snotty. It seems unless you are a regular they don't engage with you. The woman helping me was very short. She found the yarn I wanted in back and immediately asked if I wanted to check out on a short way. No! Then I was looking for needles. She patronized me on how they were in order of size. Well yes they are but the size 1,2 and 3 were mixed up so I was trying to find a 2. Then again she wanted to check me out. I wanted to just look around!!! I tried to ask questions about one particular scarf that was a sample and got nothing. Only one woman seemed even willing to respond out of the three!!! When another woman who was obviously a regular came in, the attitude changed!! Clue in that anyone who walks through the door could become a regular customer!!! Btw, I was also in the store in the old location and the attitude was the same. Not sure why I've come back. It's close to work I guess. read more
