Beginner fiber arts person. I was initially happy with this store and the assistance they gave me, as well as the selection of yarn. I generally find it strange that people have gone out of their way on review platforms to say unnecessary things. I think on the whole, women should support women. When a place has 4.7 stars from a hundred people it is easy to imagine that the one-off less than you wanted experience who takes the time to complain publicly is not reliable. That said - there is a person who works here who should not be public-facing and it has impacted my experience of the store and interest in returning. read more

Tried to go here to shop for some yarn and support local business but left with such an unpleasant feeling that I will never return. It looks like there are two women who work here. One who has the short grey haired bob seems more personable but the other seems only to want certain people to shop here. She was extremely rude to us and asked us to move aside even though we were not in the way but seemed eager to bend over backwards to help some other customers. read more

A knitting friend and I took a field trip in to Chicago with the mission of going to Sister Arts Studio for the first time. We have both lived all over the US and have shared stories of good and bad yarn stores. Sister Arts is on the top of both of our lists of GREAT. From the minute we walked in Shara engaged with us on all levels. We talked (and laughed) yarn, famous knitters and why we think some yarn stores are so unfriendly. She helped my friend pick a substitute yarn for a project with amazing knowledge. She pointed me to the sale yarn and then helped me pick yarn for one of the display scarves. They have a great selection of beautiful yarns, kits and tools. We talked about all the interesting offers of classes, some of which we will definitely join. We were the only customers for a bit which was fun to get such undivided attention. As more and more people came in for help and to shop, Shara was the ultimate multi-tasker, helping everyone with a smile and expert service. She ended our first visit with an excellent lunch recommendation. We will absolutely be return customers. This is a terrific place to shop for yarn and to go be with kindred spirits. I am a big crochet girl and I absolutely LOVED Sister-Arts in Lincoln Park, and Donna who helped me out. I was able to buy yarn for 2 different projects there, and I also attended "Stitch Night" two weeks in a row. Stitch Night is a weekly community event put on by the studio during the warmer months, where everyone is welcome to come sit outside the studio, enjoy some beverages, and crochet or knit with new friends! I love this shop. They are so welcoming! They greet you right away when you come in so you don't feel like you're walking into a clique of knitters that aren't interested in you. And the help I have received there has been fantastic. In particular, I went in wanting to replicate a friend's sweater. Jamie helped me CREATE my own pattern for it. And stood patiently at the end while I modeled it so we could decide how high the neck should go and where the armholes should fall. She is so willing to share her obvious expertise. The sweater turned out fantastic. She even blocked it for me, as well as another afghan I made. Another time I brought in tons of yarn from my stash and they helped me figure out how to use it all in one afghan. Both Jamie and Donna are very creative and have a great sense of design and color that I trust implicitly. This is what a knit shop should be! read more

I love this store to pieces. Its close to where I live but I think even if I had to I would travel quite far to come here! When I came in the other day, Donna (the owner) was on the phone and I was in no rush so I meandered around looking at yarn as I usually would. Whilst meandering, I overheard Donna on the phone talking about one of her employees (it sounded like the call was checking references). The way she spoke about the employee was so thoughtful and in depth, it was truly touching! She talked about the woman with the same loving, reverent tones that she used to talk about her own shop. I already knew that Donna and her staff were great to work with, they had been so helpful and informative on previous occasions, but it warmed my heart to grasp just how deeply she cares. I first encountered Sister-Arts when I was taking ceramics classes next door. The selection is lovely; I especially like the selection of multi-colored hand-dyed yarn. The staff is very friendly and will help you select the right yarn or project! The best part, though - the Thursday night knit group! Show up after work for a glass of wine, great conversation, and some knitting tips from the real experts. The price is right for the quality of yarn, however, if it's your first time shopping outside of Michael's or Jo-Ann's, the cost is a bit higher than you might expect. I was so happy to find Sister Arts Studio in my search for craft workshops in chicago... !! Donna (the owner) gave me ideas and then let me at it... she has just the right blend of knowledgeable teacher and talented artisan. Very welcoming and open... I felt like we were fast friends by the end of the night... and the yarns... oh my, the gorgeous textures, colors, and variety.... ! I am a newbie to knitting but have definitely been bitten by the knit bug... I will be back and I will also be dropping in on the open-knit thurs evenings. (Just an fyi: Donna mentioned it isn't just knitting on Thurs... crafters of all kinds come... my only caution would be to use common sense.... keep the ooey gooey crafts for another day... you wouldn't want to wreck someone's beautiful work with your sticky gluey mess... ; ) She has classes of all kinds and all ages... even classes for adults & non-adults ; ) (aka kidlets of all ages) and some very cool / unusual kits. This is a warm and inviting knitting, fibre arts and crafts store that inspires your creativity. My daughter (age 11) loves it as much as I do and has had two amazing birthday parties creating jewelry and making the most adorable stuffed bears ever! I learned to knit here..and I'm so glad that I did. The instructors really care and are excited about what they are teaching. I love knowing that I can stop in on any Thursday night for Knit Night to work on my projects, have a glass of wine, and some great adult conversation. What a great spot! I came in today to buy yarn for a scarf I'm making for a gift. I was immediately welcomed and asked if I needed any help. I confessed my inexperience and I was delighted to have their complete support in picking the right yarn and tools! I love the fact that they offer "drop in" classes that you can do for 30 minute increments. I quickly learned how to pearl and knit and they even filmed me doing it on my phone so I could have it when I get home. I sat there for 2 hours enjoying conversation, beautiful ambience, and ongoing support of my project. Can't wait to go back and continue to learn. We've been here a few times to pick out some yarn, and every time the staff is incredibly helpful, taking the time to answer knitting questions and show us through various types of yarn. The third time we went in, I didn't expect them to even recognize us, but they remembered the colorway we were looking for the last time and let us know they had gotten some in. :) Love this place! read more

Pretty decent selection, rather expensive prices. Unfortunately if you come in here expect to take 30-45 minutes to get answers to simple questions and to check out. On the one hand if they are not busy and you've got nowhere to be, the level of service is incredible - they'll pull up patterns, carefully analyze in excruciating detail each stitch, and puzzle over yarn selection with you. You will have their undivided attention - they won't even acknowledge other people waiting there. On the other hand, if you're an experienced knitter who just wants one quick answer after which you just want to check out, this is an incredibly painful process to watch when all you want to do is throw obscene amounts of money at people who seem to have no real interest in actually taking your money and letting you leave to begin a new project. It took me almost 45 minutes to find out where the wool yarn was and check out. And 2 minutes to make my selection. I don't think I will be back unless I'm in no hurry at all or unless I have a question about a stitch that can't be answered with Google or YouTube tutorials. But this would be a great place with a very, very patient newbie. read more

I've been here multiple times and have had a very good experience each time, except the last time. I was in looking for a weight 3 cotton or cotton/linen blend. I told the employee that I knew Cascades had a good one but asked for her recommendation. She me informed she didn't know what "weight 3" meant but that I could find the cotton over there *pointed and walked away*. I was left to fend for myself. This was the only time I've experienced less than excellent service, so maybe this woman was having a bad day. Overall, it's a great shop and I'd recommend it to anyone. read more

I am new to the whole LYS scene (they taught my this acronym) and am overwhelming participating in this years yarn crawl. I am loving the experience. I was recommended to go to this shop by someone in Plainsfield, because they thought I would appreciate the artistic nature of Sister-Arts and they were correct! I was made to feel quite welcome and was not at all intimidated asking my silly, beginner questions. Donna took her time with me and explained the finer points of her beautiful crawl pattern, before excusing herself to help other customers. I chatted with Jami for a while after that and look forward to attending their knit night for more fabulous stories. Thank you for making me feel welcome and part of the "scene"! I phoned the store, asking what they had available in cotton within a specific price range. I was told that some options were available. When I got to the store, there was nothing remotely resembling what I had asked for. Instead of simply saying, "We don't carry any yarns so basic or inexpensive," the clerk talked me into buying yarn that was a multi-fiber blend for three times my budget. Although they seem to have many varieties of high-end yarn is very small amounts, this is not the place to obtain day-to-day knitting supplies. read more

So I was trudging around Lincoln Park after my dentist appointment and needed a pick-me-up after finding out that I need massive dental work. Thank heavens for my new dental insurance! I digress. I recently started knitting and remembered seeing this little shop, hidden away on Wrightwood. I wandered in to find two very nice ladies (sisters perhaps), one of whom was kniting away and the other tidying up the shop. They didn't even seem to mind that I was stuck on the phone, listening to my friend's endless story about something or other. I managed to break free of the friend and started browsing the yarns. Although not terribly extensive, the selection is diverse, with something for everyone. With some help, I was able to find a reasonably priced baby alpaca skein for my Kool-Aid dyeing experiment. The ladies were incredibly sweet and run a cute, unpretentious little shop. It's small and cozy and feels like a wonderful place to come spend a few hours, knitting away your worries. read more

Small, local shop with a great vibe. Good amount of yarns for a smaller shop. The owner (I think) was very helpful and friendly. She also gave us a few tips on local places to eat (Dunlay's was really nice btw). I overheard that one of the nearby schools has an after school program with them and there was a class for adults starting as my husband and I left. If you're in the area, there is also a knit night group which seemed nice, they even offered us some lovely homemade pumpkin spice whoopie pies that were leftover. This is definitely the type of place I like to support when I'm visiting a new city. If we go back to Chicago, I'd love to come back. read more

My mother and I participated in the Chicago Yarn Crawl this year. Sister-Arts Studio was by far the best shop on the crawl! Very trendy! They have a vast assortment of yarn, samples, patterns, and supplies. The staff(including the owner) were personable, extremely helpful, and full of knowledge. While we had every intention of revisiting for the fashion show and sangria, the weather turned a bit, and we ran out of energy. We will definitely be returning to Sister-Arts Studio next time we are in Chicago, and will follow them on social media until then! read more

Adorable store in a residential neighborhood. Half the store is yarn and knitting supplies, half the store is kids kits, game, gifts, and toys. I came in looking for yarns, and I found a nice selection of hand painted as well as solids. They carry Knit Picks items, but if they don't have what you want, they'll order it and charge the same as the website. I enjoyed perusing some of the kids gifts, but I didn't really need anything. This place looks and feels very family friendly. Finding parking is difficult though. read more

All I can say is wow! We were downtown celebrating my mom's 60th and wanted to do a fun craft activity. We had trouble finding spots that had openings when my big sis came upon this little gem. We arrived early on Saturday and were greeted by Donna. The store isn't very big but is packed full of fun stuff to look through and play with. We were there to learn how to knit but found toys and craft kits for kids galore! With a group of four, the lesson was easy and so much fun. Donna couldn't have been more patient and helpful. Turns out we were all born to knit! We also met a wonderful lady who was also receiving direction from Donna. Very affordable activity with great people and wonderful merchandise. The yarns were great! Much better than you could find in the standard craft store. We went crazy with our purchases because we had such a great time. So thanks to Donna, the Naughty Knitting Club has been created! Even though none of us live in the city, and most are more than an hour away, we absolutely plan on coming back! read more
