I am impressed. I walked into Firefly on a whim because I saw that they had intro to knitting and crocheting classes. Now I have 0 experience with any of this but thought it would be a fun activity to try. When I walked in Sarah and Jackie were sitting making beautiful creations, these lady's skills are impressive. The class was $20 for an hour and even though I walked in the knitting hour slot Sarah was nice enough to go into crochet mode instead. She was a great teacher and didn't let me give up, I learned the basics and even got to keep practicing after the hour was done which I super appreciated. They have a beautiful array of yarns that were high quality and decent in price. During the pandemic, you have to make an appointment to come in and shop. Don't worry! This process is super easy. I have shopped in this location twice. Each time, all the employees were super helpful. I don't know anything about knitting, but I have friends who knit. I like to shop here when buying presents for my knitting-friends. All the employees are kind and patient with my questions, and I have many! My knitting-friends love the yarn that I gifted them. Without the help of the employees, I don't think I'd know what to buy! I promise, all their yarn is high quality and ethically sourced. If you're concerned about breaking the bank, this store frequently has sales going on. I found this little gem while in town for an extra day following a conference. This shop has a fantastic selection of gorgeous yarns in an array of beautiful colors, and they're very knowledgeable about both knitting and crochet. They're into natural fibers and dyes, so the yarn you can find here is of a quality and character that you can't find at a big store like Michael's. Luxe but affordable, and so many options! After learning many years ago, I walked in looking for help with my crochet technique and Sarah helped me SO much. She showed me a few different options, and I've finally found a more efficient, ergonomic approach to crochet. I also thought I was allergic to wool, when in reality the wool I had dealt with in the past was processed in a way that made my skin sensitive to it. Sarah showed me a beautiful line by Woolfolk that is soft, luxurious, and absolutely stunning - I ended up getting three skeins of three different colors/textures and I couldn't be happier. Sarah/Tina were so welcoming to me, I stayed a few hours working on a project and chatting with them and a few friends/neighbors who came and worked on their own projects. It was like finding a group of old friends, and it made me wish I had a store like this closer to home. Sarah also gave a knitting class to two beginners while I was there, and I was so impressed by her kind, attentive manner. I've walked past here a number of times and always said that if my mother came to visit I would take her in here. She's an avid knitter, and thought this would be a great spot to share with her. I was completely right, she absolutely loved it when I took her in here on Friday. The different types of yarn, just to the feel of the store was so cool! And the spot set out for people to sit, socialize and knit was really cool as well. I know that I will be finding myself here again soon either per request of my mother, or going to get her a gift. It's weird to deduct a star because I liked this store a lot, but ultimately the limited selection means it won't be someplace I return to frequently for purchases. Really strong emphasis on vegan and sustainable fibers here. That's important for anyone who is looking for a more traditional LYS. You might be disappointed at the selection. Also definitely a less traditional and funkier vibe, as you might expect for a store in Wicker Park. Whew, now that the deduction is over, here's everything I loved about the place! The store owner is lovely and I enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere at a recent knit night. Very inclusive and diverse community, more so than you see at many other LYS's! Also very welcoming of crocheters, which I think is great. Really cool Harry Potter notions that I've never seen elsewhere and nice conversation at knit night. Ultimately I think this is a yarn store worth visiting in the area, especially if you're looking for a progressive community and an emphasis on sustainable yarns. Stumbled into this shop today- it's definitely a smaller local yarn store. But they have a local and sustainable focus, which I love! They definitely shared some things about why they've chosen not to have certain yarns, and I learned a few things. If you're looking for acrylic- this is not the place to go! (In response the the owner's attempt to defend what I consider to be a sore lack of customer service (see below), I should have mentioned that I spent $85 and so according to the owner, a pin should have been offered. It is not the pin but the lack of customer service and courtesy that is at issue here. In a neighborhood yarn shop, whether there is a class or not, whether it is "busy" or not, I think there should be someone on staff willing to spend up to five minutes showing/talking to a paying customer (and even a non-paying customer) about knitting. Isn''t that what is so great about brick and mortar neighborhood stores?! The personalized service... Heck, I have gotten more help at Home Depot than at this shop. Yes, I assumed, that despite the last minute cancellation of the class, I could go into the shop, buy materials, spent over $80, and that someone would be willing to spend 5 minutes with me. It appears from the owner's perspective that this was not the norm for the shop, especially when the shop is busy. ) I was excited to go to this business, a woman-owned business by consummate knitters, I read. It does not get any better...or, in this case any worse. I am a lawyer so I research the heck out of everything. Five stars x 16 reviews= great? Maybe but not the day I dropped in. So, I texted a few friends- meet up at their drop in class on Saturday at 3? The store was closed and then closed Thursday and Friday for the T-day holiday but the website on Wednesday announced the drop in class. I wanted to learn how to knit. The other two places I considered had knitting classes but this Saturday class was the most convenient...until it wasn't (so convenient). I looked at their website an hour before class, class had been cancelled because of Small Business Saturday. mmm.. I will go anyway, someone will explain this knitting to me..after all the reviews say they are very accommodating. I just need to relearn-it should take someone in the store about five minutes..Well, I got about 30 seconds of the owner's time and I felt like I was imposing on her. "Here is how to cast" she said, with a weary and/or exasperated tone to her voice. So, I sat for a while to make sure I was doing it correctly, Did someone (of the three employees, two of them the owners) come over to see how I was doing? Heck no, even after I mentioned I had been excited to attend the class which the owner admitted was "cancelled late"...like that morning... I want to mentioned that I was waited on by the daughter. Maybe it would have been a better experience with the mom. As a small business owner myself, I listened to the mom help someone. She was more accommodating..even offered a "pin" - Did I really want a pin? No, but it would have been nice to have it offered to me, especially when the daughter mentioned that her mom had ordered so many pins... I will never go back. I felt like a burden and yes, it was busy in the store during Small Business Saturday but isn't that the type of day most small business owners hope for and work towards? Not here, in my opinion, I did not see any passion for the business or for knitting or for helping a paying customer. That said, if you can get beyond the customer service, they do have a really nice selection and if you ask questions, they will answer them. But so does Amazon and the customer service is more cheerful and takes more pride in ownership than what I experienced in this shop. read more

I cannot say how grateful I am to this shop! They are true pros! I had a crocheted blanket that was a family heirloom (my great grandma had made it for my mother in the early 1950s). One of the squares has unraveled and I had no idea how to fix it. I didn't want it sewed at a dry cleaner. I really wanted it to look as close to the original as possible. After much research I discovered that it was crocheted and not knitted as I had thought. The owners (mother daughter pair) knew just what to do. Not only did they remove the square and hand crochet a new one and sew it back in place, but they HAND DYED the new yarn to make it match better. I was so impressed with the attention to detail and care that they put into my blanket. I literally couldn't even tell which square it was at first that she had replaced until she pointed it out to me. So so grateful! Not only that but when I was there I saw a really fun looking class/hang out going on - super friendly atmosphere - cool location in wicker park. Highly recommend if you have a repair, a question, or if you are trying to buy supplies or learn to knit or crochet - this is THE place. read more

I failed to become aware that I needed an appointment to shop. I was outside and called and asked if it was okay to do a quick buy- since I knew what I wanted. They let me in (thank you to the customer who didn't mind me coming in) and I truly appreciate it. I never exactly know at what time I'll be done with work so I wouldn't have been able to make an appointment anyways. This shop is a drop off site for the craft activism project to make welcome blankets to distribute to immigrants and refugees to our country. I just stopped in here to find some pink wool to make pussy hats for the march this weekend and was amazed at all the high quality yarns available. I met one of the owners and she was so knowledgable and friendly and you can tell that she and her mom (the other owner) put a lot of thought into this studio. All their fibers are sustainable and from small farms, so you can feel good about your yarns. They even have a whole line of vegan yarns, if you want vegan yarns or just want yarn that is cotton, as opposed to wool. I'm so excited to have a knitting/fiber studio in the neighborhood and am even happier that it's one full of yarns I can feel good about! I stopped by to purchase some roving to use for needle felting. While the color selection was not extensive, the owner brought out her supplier catalogs for me to choose some shades I like so she can special order some. I bought some of the colors in stock. The quality is very nice and the price was outstanding. For $7 I walked out with 3 oz of roving, which equates to about half of a 12" gift bag. Visited this fabulous little yarn store on the Chicago Yarn Crawl. Definitely one of the better fiber arts store in Chicago. They have a local and sustainable focus which is a great concept! Staff was very friendly. Will definitely visit again when in Chicago. Can't wait to see them grow! read more
