I brought my grandma's Singer 201 into the shop because it was running very sluggishly and not stitching properly. Unbelievable! I was so excited to meet Steve because I have had a Pfaff 1222 my whole life, but it has never had a problem I needed fixing. I have not used this machine since the 1980s. This machine had never had a tune-up or oil job and was doing its job until one day it stopped. Our 1980's vintage Singer sewing machine broke down. The machine was not advancing and made an awful grinding noise. I had a great experience. I called there and they told me to bring it and they would like to check it out. When we arrive, he told us it will take 2 hours to fix it. He also give us a fantastic deal. The total for parts $25 with labor and tuneup $50. After 45 min, he give us a call. Vintage Singer was ready to pick up. They fixed our machine in a jiffy, seriously in about 45min. This place has horrible customer service. The manager, in particular, is rude and condescending. I inherited a 5-year-old Singer sewing machine that was in great condition. After a few crazy months of what felt like nonstop sewing (holiday season), the timing needed an adjustment. I took the sewing machine here because they seemed inexpensive despite a quick turnaround. My sewing machine worked great...for 2 days. I looked at the machine closely to see if it was something I could adjust, at which point I noticed a lot of grease marks and scratches on the back that weren't there before. Fortunately, I was able to clean off most of the marks. I brought the machine back to this store, and the manager actually seemed annoyed when I showed them the scratches - is it crazy to think that a machine shouldn't come back in worse shape then when it was dropped off? They decided the machine needed a replacement part. After a few minutes, the manager said he couldn't find the part in his Singer manual. He said he could repair it if I could call Singer myself and get the part. This seemed weird since they are a Singer authorized repair service, they could probably better describe to Singer exactly what I needed, and my machine is only 5 years old... After calling Singer the next week, I decided to cut my losses and bring my machine to the Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, which several friends recommended. I wish I had gone there first as this place was a colossal waste of time. read more

Okay, I read the reviews and I was a bit worried...but my daughter was having a slight sewing emergency and I needed 2 of her machines fixed...and it was Superbowl Sunday. I called Goldblatt's and talked to the owner (he is the Grandson of the founder) to find out they were open and he told me to bring them in and he would fix both of them same day. Sure enough, he was able to take care of both machines in a couple hours while my daughter and I had breakfast and cruised around Bucktown. He was so helpful, showing my daughter little ways to take care of her machines and showing me how to clean them. I was in the middle of a mad sewing session Friday (anniversary gift due to husband on Saturday!) when, all of a sudden, the hand-wheel on my trusty Singer just locked up. I raced the machine over to Goldblatt's right before they closed. The man there reassured me that the problem was likely not a huge one, and that he'd call the next day with a quote. Sure enough, by 10 a.m. Saturday, I knew that the motor just needed removed and cleaned, and they'd do that along with a standard tune-up for $70. I picked up my good-as-new machine on Sunday. I didn't think this place was so bad. I recently took my old Kenmore sewing machine in for repairs. This was the second time in about 3 years that I've gone to them. They were quick with the repairs (same day). A little pricey though. $60 for a (much needed) tune up. I can see why people didn't like the attitude, but I think it's just his personality. I had a great experience here. Brought my old yard sale-bought machine in, and they were able to repair and return the same day. I went home and immediately tested it out, and it worked great. The $65 that I was charged to fix the timing and give it a much needed tune up is completely in line with what other repair shops in the area charge. I dealt with three different people in the shop, and all were helpful and great. After some of the negative reviews I was almost disappointed that the head guy wasn't grumpier because I have a big soft spot for curmudgeons...but he was totally normal. Hadn't used my Janome in several years and thought I'd better get it checked out before I started using it again. Did vaguely remember it wasn't stitching properly when I stopped using it... Fairly new to Chicago so I hadn't known where to take it for it's annual service, which was why it hadn't been done for a couple of years. Got on Yelp and found Goldblatt. Called and they said bring it it. They have a delivery stand in the doorway with a plastic shield for contact free service. They took my machine and serviced it really fast. Called me to let me know that my bobbin case was damaged (that explains the bad stitching) and they could fix it. The fix only cost $10. The service was more than reasonable ($60 I think) and done within 24 hours. They got my poor baby working beautifully again! So happy. They will be my choice for the annual checkup from now on. read more

Before I go to any new store I always check Yelp for reviews. Based on some of the other reviews I prepared myself to deal with a complete grouch (as described by other reviewers) because the store is close to my house and I didn't want to lug my old 1940's Kenmore to Evanston. Since it was a Saturday when my machine broke I called ahead to check the store hours. The older man who answered the phone was nice, so I thought it must be somebody else who is the grouch. Well, I took my sewing machine in and the same older man who answered the phone helped me in the store. Not only was he not rude or grouchy, he was actually kind and pleasant. He told me he would take a look at it then call when he knew what the issue was. He called about an hour later to let me know it needed a basic tune up, that it would be $60 and that I could pick it up the next day. Kool. When I picked my machine up Mr. Goldblatt's son helped me. He was also a really nice guy and helped me get my machine into my bag and then into my cart. Once I got my sewing machine home and begun to sew I was so happy. It's now working better than it ever has. If you are reading these reviews and basing your decision to get your machine fixed here on the shop owner's personality you are seriously overthinking this. I feel like he has gotten a bad rap from a few reviewers, which is completely undeserved. This company has been around a long time for a reason - their quality of work. My 30 year old Kenmore home sewing machine was in dire need of a tune up and repair. It was noisy, feed dogs were hesitating and the whole machine was getting loud. I love this place. Years ago, the sewing machine my mom gave me was acting funny. I took it in for a tune up and they said it looked like it had never been oiled. (It hadn't.) He showed me how to do it. Good as new. Last year I dropped my machine(!!) and it stopped working. I took it in and they called me to say that there was nothing wrong with it. A few years ago these guys tried to sell me a machine for double the price that they were simultaneously selling it for on eBay with the "buy it now" feature (under a different business name but same phone number and backround info.) If you need to buy bobbins or machine oil in a pinch this place is conveniently located, but I wouldn't trust these guys for anything else. I've been taking my machine to the Singer Factory Store up on Irving Park Road since then. They aren't as conveniently located but they've done a good job maintaining my industrial machine (not a Singer) and are reasonably priced. Update in response to Steve at Goldblatts: Though you may sell the machines on ebay knocked down this wouldn't have affected my pricing as I would have been buying just a machine head and switching it out with another one I have and not buying the other parts requiring further assembly and set-up. read more

There is a $60 minimum repair charge, which these guys will fail to warn you of, and the offered "free estimate" does not actually exist. Just great. I've had several consumer machines tuned up here, as well as purchased parts for my Singer 20U. These guys are as helpful as can be. They've got the parts, they've got the knowhow, they get the job done quickly at a reasonable price, and they're pretty nice guys once you realize they're probably more a B to B outfit than accustomed to knuckleheads like me walking in off the street to pick their brains. Excellent repair shop with next day service, if you can put up with mediocre customer service. I was having issues with my 1960s Singer and took it in for repair. The gentleman who took it in was rather rude but assured me they could fix it (not much detail provided like what might be wrong or what would be inspected - this was irritating). However, it was ready the next day and was in impeccable condition. It purrs! I still have no idea what they did to it. Bonus points for another sales clerk who noticed I was 8 months pregnant and helped me carry my machine out to the car. read more

I actually live in San Francisco and was just visiting Chicago. Noticing this place while I was in the neighborhood, I asked if they had a zipper foot for my older model Nelco JA-38, which they did. When I got it home to California, I realized it was the wrong kind of foot (low shank when it should have been high shank). I stopped by Glodblatt on a Saturday after calling to see whether they had a belt for the machine I was working on for my wife (40 year old Singer Touch n Sew). This is definitely a mechanic shop above all else. Somewhat messy, but organized as well - like your local automotive mechanic's garage. The guys there spent a good amount of time on me finding various parts I needed both from their replacement parts stock as well as pulled parts from their collection of old machines. The handful of parts that let me get the machine back together ended up being only $30 of parts - both fair and reasonable price for what I got. Just as other reviewers have reported, I was quoted a standard price of $60 for a tune-up and was promised a phone call should there be anything unusual so I could approve the cost before the work was done. A friend and I dropped off our machines around 1 p.m. today and I received a call less than an hour 1/2 later re additional repairs needed for the bobbin winder on my machine - my friend's was ready to pick up. I was told that he would first attempt to repair and then replace the parts if necessary and quoted me an additional price range of $15 - 40. I took my ancient industrial machine for a tune up. The Goldblatt's guys took care of my dinosaur, and got it up and running within a few business days. I especially appreciated their instructions on how to better care for my machine. The leather belt I have is at least 30 years old and I assumed it required replacment too, but they told me it was just fine and didn't try to mislead me into buying parts and pieces I didn't need. The tune up for my industrial machine was about the same as the reviews I see on regular household machines too. I had a great experience here. I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and dropped off my machine which was in dire need of a tune-up. I explained the issues, five minutes later I was off enjoying my afternoon. I got a call just before 5pm with the estimate ($65) and my machine was repaired by 1pm on Sunday. I am very happy with the results. Other places keep your machine for a week, mine was only out of commission for 24 hours. The price is a little steep (thus 4 stars), but I'm glad to have my machine working again. I will definitely return when my machine acts up again. My wife had a quilting class upcoming when her singer sewing maching broke. We googled same day service and Goldblatt came up. We made the 45 minute trip to Chicago and found the store. Steve imeadiatly stopped what he was doing (we called in advance) and asked his tech Jose to help us. They worked on her machine 1/2 hour and fixed the problem while we waited. We did not need any parts so imagine our utter shock when Steve said "No Charge"! Mind you this was a holiday weekend. I have designed and sewn clothes my entire life. I bought my first commercial machine here earlier this year. The staff was very helpful and patient as I asked lots of questions and tried out the machine in various ways.
