Highly recommend for wood project. We had a great experience with the Square Nail team and a beautiful table as a product. The owners are very kind and patient. They walked us through the different types of wood, cuts, level of sanding, staining, polishing, etc. as we are not educated in wood. They are very accommodating. They invited us to stop by whenever we had questions or wanted to check out the project. And answered our emails within 24 hours. Square Nail is a great, family owned, family run business. My family went to their storefront shop to commission a custom built wood kitchen table to fit our long, narrow space. Dan and Maureen helped us design a table from scratch and completed it in less than two months. It turned out great and it was actually cheaper than going to a big box like Room & Board. My one piece of advice is to know what you want when you approach them. They are craftsmen, not sales people. So there is no pressure or sales push. But that also means that you aren't choosing from a catalog. So bring them your idea and dimensions and they will build you exactly what you want at a fair price. I am so grateful for Square Nail! Last fall I was redesigning my dining room and couldn't find a table I liked. I walked into Square Nail on a whim and started talking to Dan about some ideas I'd seen and liked. He listened and understood exactly what I was looking for and said they could make it from scratch. In addition, he told me that they had just gotten some reclaimed wood from an old barn west of the city that he thought would be perfect. I was so excited! Working with both Dan and Mike was a terrific experience. They would have me come into the shop and check in on the progress to make sure it's exactly what I wanted. Despite having seen it all along the way, when I finally saw the finished product, I was so blown away! It is a work of art - absolutely gorgeous and fits perfectly in my new dining room. I have just recently downsized my home from the suburbs of Hinsdale to the city so this was a huge transition for me ... wanted a whole new wardrobe for my new condo. My home was previously french country, and wanted to decor in MCM but I just couldn't make that leap so I have been desperately searching for that perfect dining/kitchen table. It also didn't help that I am a design major and nothing comes close to the quality and the design I find sufficient. Then came Dan... These guys are fantastic, a very knowledgeable family business creating some simply gorgeous work. I picked up carpentry as a hobby again during COVID and was looking for special lumber with which to build a dining room table. They had this really beautiful 2 1/2+" thick old growth pine recently reclaimed from an old demolished school in the area. Charlie was very helpful, and after explaining what I wanted to do they cut down the lumber to the sizes I needed and planed it to be ready for my glueing & finishing. I did a good amount of research and their pricing was very fair for what I was getting, they were very generous with their expertise in letting a still-learning amateur pick their brains on the details of how to do what I was trying to do. The "how's" with a lot of this kind of work are not obvious if you haven't done it before, and their tips both saved me a ton of work and yielded a much better result. And through all of it they were friendly and patient, not making the noob feel dumb. Thanks guys. I highly recommend Square Nail, they will be my go-to from now on. read more

Walked in there with the intention of buying some furniture and spending a good amount of money on it. However, when we walked in we were barely acknowledged and the people working there just walked into the back without saying a word. Worst Experience Ever! They may be fine on little items, but they fully botched our butcher block project and got in way over their heads then bailed the day before we were supposed to move into our new house. They gave us a price to build a butcher block that was 8 ft by 41/2 ft. We went in 4 times in the 3 months before we order. They assured us they could do it. After they built it, they realized it was practically impossible to move. Then said that they were no longer going to deliver it, and that it was done...and we could pick it up!!!! Oh, and they sent me that by e-mail!!!! at 7pm at night, the day before my move! The next day when I told him that that move was "spineless", Dan decided that he was going to keep the butcher block, to spit us. He is lucky that spineless was all he got called. So my family of 5 has been living with plywood for a counter top for the last month while we wait on another custom order butcher block.... which every other person I have since had it quoted with, who are in the business and actually know what they are doing, told us that they will ship it in multiple pieces and join it on site...which is what these two guys should have KNOW enough to do. We planned this butcher block for months before we ordered, we met with Dan at least 4 times before we ordered... it was not only disheartening but utterly the worst customer service experience I have every encountered. As he said to me... they are a mom and pop shop.....they took on way to much with our job and then screwed us when they got in trouble. Stick to the small stuff you can handle. read more

I'm so thrilled with the storage bed that Square Nail made for me. It's exactly what I wanted and is just gorgeous. Every step of the process, from beginning to end, was great, and they were so amenable to all my questions and any minor adjustments I requested. Awesome experience here! Me and my GF set out to make a bench for our entryway. We ordered hairpin legs online and wanted some cool reclaimed wood to attach them to. We came in on Sat afternoon and Maureen was very helpful! She helped us to pick out a great 5 foot piece and told us she could finish it that evening and we could pick it up at 10 am. We arrived Sunday morning and sure enough it was done with 3 coats and looked beautiful! Then Maureen and Dan took the time to help us put the legs on and provided the hardware. I couldn't be happier with my experience with Dan and the rest of the people at Square Nail. A large catalpa tree that we used to play around in the house I grew up in was recently cut down because it had been struck by lightning. I was able to save three huge cuts of it and I brought it into Square Nail where I discussed different options with Dan. I later emailed him some tables I liked and he responded with some options he thought might be good as well. After we settled on a base that we thought would be perfect, he had it custom made for me and then began work on the top. I wanted 7 stripes of catalpa on the top to indicate each of my 7 siblings. Even though the wood was super soft and he had to battle with it breaking apart in places, he came through and crafted an amazing and beautiful top paired with walnut that I LOVE. He also secured metal numbers for me to stamp in the coordinates of my house on one stretch of the catalpa and when I came in to check on the progress with my Dad, he encouraged us to stamp the numbers in ourselves by hand. In short he has gone above and beyond to help me make an amazing dining room that I will have forever. I couldn't be happier :) read more
