Didn't know what to expect when someone said I had to try French fries topped with raw onions, peanut sauce and Mayo. But they were right! The Patatje Oorlog here were so yummy. And we hit it at noon on a Sunday before the line stretched around the block.

Do you like very large fries with no seasoning? I suggest coming here. Their fries had no salt on them which is good if you have high cholesterol and other health concerns but I for one, am not worried about my deteriorating health. I'm here for a good time, not a long time. Amirite??? Anyway, We got their classic mayonnaise sauce along with their spicey chili sauce. Mayo was sweet and the spicey chili sauce is like a sweet and sour sauce with no kick to it whatsoever.

Saw a lot of these stores around Amsterdam and finally stopped by on. This reminds me a lot of pommes frites in nyc where they largely specialize in serving fries with a lot of different sauces. Here there are also burgers and hotdogs and of course fries. They have the typical ketchup/mayo but also curry ketchup, tartar sauce, spicy sauces and more! I settled for a medium sized cone of French fries with the special sauce which was ketchup, mayo and onions sprinkled on top. Not a bad mid afternoon snack!

I came here on a Friday afternoon, right before a line started to form. I had no idea what I wanted but the man working the counter was more than helpful. I had some questions about the different sauces they had to offer and he gave me a sample of five different spicy sauces (which were all very good). I ended up choosing the spicy Thai chili sauce and cheese and it was PERFECT. They also have some sort of salty seasoning to go on top. I'm so sad we don't have this place back in the United States, it was salty, flavorful perfection. 10/10 would recommend

    Tasty fries with Remouladesaus

When we planned our vacation in the Netherlands my first thought was: "I WILL eat a Frikandel!" To be honest I was a little but disappointed. I never had one before and I might never have another one that is not homemade. As you might expect the Frikandel speciaal (speciaal is with mayonnaise, ketchup and chopped onions) was an industrially produced frozen one. That was okay for me as I didn't think I would get something homemade but it simply did not taste of anything but the speciaal ingredients. I could also have eaten a piece of cardboard with mayonnaise, ketchup and onions. On the other hand the fries I had were great. The were crispy on the outside and hit on the inside just like they have to be. I had mine with the Remouladesaus which tasted awesome. I'm not sure if the owner puts a little extra spices into it but I really liked it. Next time I come to Amsterdam I will surely come back to have another portion fries at this location. And btw the man who seems to be the owner looks like a fine old grandfather. The younger guy seemed a little stressed.

The mayo, I will say, tastes different than American mayo as it has a hint of sweetness (as does Dutch ketchup).

Top Notch Breakfast and Dinner…read more.. Brasserie is the restaurant inside the Ambassade Hotel. My wife and I...along with another couple...had 4 breakfasts and 1 dinner there so this review reflects our experience. - Overall: 5 - Location: 5 (for Old Town and the Jordaan) - Exterior: 5 - Interior: 5 - Atmosphere: 5 - Menu: 5 - Food: 5 - Service: 5 (though the head waiter at dinner was full-of-himself) - Price and Value: 5 Pros: - Location: Convenient to the Old Town and Jordaan parts of Amsterdam. - Exterior: Handsome. A beautifully restored and maintained property. - Interior: Contemporary. Brasserie is a high end spot across 3 rooms, yet remains comfortable where conversation is easily accomplished. - Menu: Very healthy buffet at breakfast plus some items which can be ordered. Dinner offers French fare with a relatively light touch...though very different from the wellness-oriented breakfast. - Food: Excellent. The breakfast buffet is not huge, but full of healthy high quality items. I had 3 unbelievable versions of granola spooned from large jars and covered my bowl with the best tasting light Greek yogurt. Fruit and fish was super fresh...bread and pastries baked on premises amazing. Others in our group chose made-to-order egg dishes. It's all part of staying at the hotel. Dinner transformed Brasserie into a bistro with a French twist on many favorite dishes. Check the menu online. Portions are small - as expected - but quality was high. However, prices were very reasonable with most items under $30. - Service: Homey at breakfast..."French" for dinner. Everyone could not have been more friendly and helpful in the morning. Things were a bit more formal at night with a different crew. The chief waiter was very knowledgeable, but we agreed a bit arrogant. - Price and Value: Worth it. I believe the breakfast buffet is only for guests of the Ambassade Hotel. Brasserie is open to the public at night and quite reasonable. - Parking: None. Who has a car in Old Town? Cons: - The only one readily apparent was the brusque, off-the-cuff nature of our main server at dinner. He wasn't over-the-top, but not in keeping with the friendly vibe of the hotel. And that's coming from 2 couples who grew up in New York City and lived for many years in San Francisco and LA. Anyone can...and should...get dinner at Brasserie. There are many reasons to make reservations for a stay at the Ambassade - including access to their breakfast buffet.
