We accidentally found Burgermeester, while looking for a different restaurant. In short, we didn't like what we saw at the other restaurant, and picked Burgermeester instead. The first thing we noticed was the staff was very friendly, and so were many of the customers. We were very comfortable. I ordered the cheeseburger deluxe and some frites with truffle mayo. The burger arrived, and it was much bigger than I expected, and when I took a bite, it was absolutely DELICIOUS! They must put super-magic-sauce on the burger, because my mouth starts watering if I even start thinking about it. This burger was so good, that two days later, I had to go back and have another. This is a gourmet burger place with interesting combinations. It is one of the better burger places in Amsterdam if you're craving burgers. Food: 3/5 Their ingredients are fresh and you can really taste it from the food. Some of their combinations were a bit strange in flavor but they were very creative (example, feta and watermelon burger). The meat was a bit overcooked and though it was juicy, it didn't melt in my mouth. Their milkshakes are really strange and the flavor combos don't work. Do not order... Atmosphere: 4/5 There is an outdoor patio that you can sit and people watch. Alternatively, you can sit inside and watch them make your burgers. Overall, a really nice location. I am a burger lover from the US that now lives in AMS. I know I have to scale back my expectations whenever I have a burger abroad. Based on the initial reviews on Yelp, I had some expectations that this joint would be respectable to good, but I was very disappointed. I ordered a regular beef burger with all the fixings and a baked potato. The burger bun was about the best part of the whole ensemble. The beef patty was maybe 1/3lb which is quite sizeable, but it unfortunately seemed to be of the frozen patty variety. There was nothing fresh about the beef and the fixings although plentiful also weren't the freshest. The bake potato I ordered was sizeable as well, but it was overcooked. In the US, I think places like Five Guys & IN-n-Out make good fast food burgers and I have no problem filling a craving at Fuddruckers as well. Burgermeester has a similar décor and color scheme as Five Guys, but they completely miss when it comes to the quality of the burgers. I crave burgers intensely and I would not go back here again and would be ok taking my money to McDonalds, because I think the beef there might actually be of higher quality which is surprising. Atmosphere & Decor: Very plain in my humble opinion. I thought the place could have been spruced up a bit and cleaned up as well. There is only a small bathroom that is shared by both men and women. Sound Level: There are tables out on the sidewalk which face the street, which will be accompanied by the typical levels of sound. Indoor seating is quite peaceful. Four stars because, of course there's some place where the burgers are even better, but this is my favourite place for burgers! Amsterdam is basically divided between lovers of Burger-bar (which I reviewed earlier) and lovers of Burgermeester. Everything that's wrong with Burger-bar is RIGHT at Burgermeester. The meat/fish/poultry is fresh and from sustainable farms (I believe mostly even biological/ecological certified) as are their other ingredients and you can taste it. They have a set number of burgers and a burger of the month, created by one of their guests. Everyone can send in suggestions for burger recipes and one is picked each month. If you can't choose between their regular offerings and the burger of the month, simply choose a trio (or duo) of mini burgers. Super easy to eat, not too small not too big. I tried this place while visiting the Dam from NYC. We decided to spend the day walking around Jordaan. After a long bike ride into Jordaan I got a craving for a juicy burger. This place has a cool flare and bumps hip hop. The menu is straightforward. When I got my burger, I will say it wasn't the best looking but boy was it delicious! The roll was a perfect bread to soak up the burger juice. The cheese was perfectly melted and the jalepenos gave it a kick! This was the worst burger I have tried in Amsterdam. The buns were terrible and barely toasted and the beef was tasteless and bland. Additionally the service was abysmal to the point where the waitress disregarded us while taking our order to check her phone. I hope this was only a one off experience and changes. I've been on a bit of a burger binge later but glad my bf and I checked out this place. Heard it was reviewed by the NY Times so it's gotta be good right? Luckily we got there a bit early around 6 to grab a quick dinner before our comedy show at Boom Chicago. It's cool to watch them make the burgers - especially if you're having it for the first time because you think... they're HUGE.. and looks delicious. I ordered the Meester beef, chicken and spanish burger as part of the trio. I started with the Spanish burger which was full of flavour. Chicken burger was also great, loved the mix of avocado and mango. The Meester burger was good but probably should've started with that because it felt a bit plain. There are no fries but the baked potato is a good alternative. Also probably better that way because the burgers are very filling. The baked potato was nicely baked and do like it was topped with sour cream. Interesting that they don't have diet coke... even if it seems a bit silly to have it when you're eating burgers but sometimes I just prefer it. Would love to try some of the other burgers. The set-up of Burgermeester is no frills - booths around plastic tables, walls painted white and bright red and no decoration except for a band of pictures of cows around the entire room. You order your burgers directly at the counter and pay up front. There is an extensive menu with a great variety beef, lamb, turkey but also lentil, goat cheese and salmon burgers. The burgers are served either in regular size or as a popular mini. The burgers are prepared truly 'masterfully' - quality meat, fresh ingredients, and distinct and flavorful spices and sauces. The first time I visited Amsterdam years ago, my friends took me to have a burger to the hippest and newest place in town, that place happened to be the first restaurant they opened. I think they paved the road for most of the burger bars in town. Their menu has remain the same over the years and they still don't sell chips! My favourite is the burger royal with cheddar but also the lamb burger is pretty good. Additionally they always have the burger of the month that it could range from Kangaroo meat to a pork burger. The only downside is the waiting time. I know that burger are no longer considered fast food but given the simplicity of the preparation process, having to wait 20 minutes for a burger feels a bit too much. read more

I ate the best turkey burger I've EVER eaten here at Burgermeester on Tuesday night. They have a great menu to choose from, and use fresh ingredients. My boyfriend ordered a beef burger with cheddar cheese and pancetta, my friend ordered a burger salad which was a vegetarian patty on a bed of fresh green vegetables, and as I mentioned I had a delicious well seasoned turkey burger. My burger was the special of the month that a customer 'designed' which was selected by the staff. Every month they feature a different customer suggested burger. They also have decent salads, a side of corn or a baked potato, and i got a side of asparagus which was soggy and oily (not good). The burger sizes are standard, and they have small mini burgers - 3 sliders for 11€ of any burger on the menu (the price may be higher for the monthly burger sliders). The strangest thing however that I just don't understand is the pictures of tagged farm cows on the wall. Do you really think I want to look into big cow eyes before I eat one?! I don't actually. BURGERmeester is really close and you will find great burgers for a reasonably price. And if you are not a tourist, you should go too! I very rarely crave a burger so when I do I want it to be a really delicious quality one. I'm not sure if the meat for their signature burger is supposed to have a grain-ish texture, but other than that it tasted perfect. Slightly pink in the middle even though they didn't ask, but still very good. I had what I'll call the signature burger with a different than regular beef kind of meat it seemed. It came with fresh grilled veggies and two kinds of sauces. I did ask for them NOT to put the mayo on the burger, but only on the side and they did not get it to me correctly. Fortunately they didn't drown the burger in it and it tasted very good still. I was a bit surprised also that at 2pm it was very full but had only a handful of large booths rather than the typical pack-you-in type of mini tables. I have a few rules about what makes a good burger. Here they are, in no particular order: 1. Well cooked patty This one was OK, I guess, but one side got much more heat than the other which lead to a patty that was medium on the bottom and rare on top. -1 for technique. 2. Well chosen bun Too crusty, with an outside that was more baguette-like than bun. -1. 3. Well considered toppings Cold egg salad. Really? It made the entire thing lukewarm. Also, next time, make a note in the menu that it's cold egg salad, not "truffle egg." A regular fried egg and some truffle mayo would have made this burger much better. Some sort of acid or vinegar would have made it even better. Mushy eggs and mayo craves for some tangy contrast. So the burger was a fail. There also weren't any fries on the menu, which is interesting for a burger joint. I felt that the burger was trying to hard. If it weren't for the weird egg salad topping, it would've been pretty good for Amsterdam standards. Also, please add fries to your menu! read more

I feel like this place was going for 'old-school diner charm' but it landed somewhere between 'school cafeteria' and 'mall food court'. The atmosphere is not only uninviting, but actively repelling - from the second I walked in I felt like getting out as soon as possible. Nonetheless, their burgers are good, and I LOVE that they offer a 'burger-as-a-salad' which is one of my favourite foods. I really didn't want to go to a burger joint while I was in Europe with my husband, just because of the fact that I could eat a burger anytime I wanted at home, but these weren't regular old, run in the mill burgers. They had a really amazing selection of vegetarian and non vegetarian options, including lamb, portobello, feta...etc. While trying to decipher what meloen, mun was, my husband had already decided on something with lamb and chorizo in the name. His was a meaty, hefty sandwich, complete with lamb meat, chorizo sausage, and jalapeños. I chose a vegetarian option (only because Feta was in the name- yum!) and it was a burger made up of feta cheese, pear, mint, and dates. It was amazing!! They used wheat buns which gave a great sweet-ness to the burgers. Apparently in Amsterdam, though, people LOVE cucumbers. They use them to make up full salads, put them on sandwiches and burgers, and generally just give them to you with anything you order at a restaurant. This is not an exaggeration. I'm not a huge fan, so I just picked them out, but I thought it was strange and amusing. My only real complaint is that it took awhile for us to actually get our food. There were quite a few people ahead of us, and of course, I do want our food to be fresh, so it's not even a huge complaint. Very good burgers. Pro tip: get a couple different mini burgers to sample the different types. Same price as one big burger. The Spanish lamb (with chorizo) was very good as was the 'Royal' burger. The falafel was also good. Oh yeah, they didn't ask us how we wanted the burgers cooked but they came medium rare, which we like. If you like it done differently you should probably tell them when you order. If you are visiting the zoo, I would recommend waiting to eat here afterwards rather than getting pricey mediocre snacks inside. read more

From the food to the service, I would highly recommend this burger chain. The burgers are delicious, juicy and bursting with flavor. I had the cheeseburger with extra jalapenos and they were packed with spice. The flavors on the cheeseburger alone had me wanting a second burger. All the ingredients were fresh and of high quality. I also ordered the fries with fresh Parmesan cheese and a jalapeno aioli sauce. Simply amazing. The staff were all pleasant and made sure we were satisfied with our meal. Burgermeester is a wonderful, wonderful place. I'm really impressed by the quality and selection of ingredients -- it's pretty hard to find this sort of variety in burger flavors in Holland. If you're having trouble deciding which burger to select, I recommend getting the mini trio (smaller versions of their regular burgers) to get a sampling of all the burgers. Although I like their classic biefburger with cheddar, I was pretty impressed with the originality and quality of the tuna burger (tonijnburger). All in all, two thumbs up. Two redeeming qualities about this place. The people are exceptionally friendly and they open late. If you go for a late meal, it will be pleasant. I love when stuff I like is in my neighborhood. This location is just down the street a bit from where I live. I walk past here frequently while out walking my dog. When the weather is good there's outside seating. There is limited seating inside. They do take away also. There's a nice mix of different kinds of burgers with unusual toppings but some very tasty combinations to test your palate. They don't do fries here but they offer a baked potato, a baked potato? No idea how they came up with that. There are a few salad offerings as well. The prices start around 8 euro. One great thing in my opinion is the three mini burgers they offer allowing you to choose three different burgers on their menu that are smaller. It's a great way to sample their menu trying three burgers in one trip without being too much of glutton. It's a very laid back casual atmosphere. Just the kind I like. I'll be back.
