After having twins, my hair and I had been through some things. Sixteen months of motherhood,…read moreapproximately 4 minutes of free time, and one DIY haircut later, my hair was desperately begging for professional intervention. Enter Groupon and Sheila. What could go wrong? Apparently, everything except the keratin treatment. First, I called to book the appointment, only to discover Sheila was apparently available exclusively on Tuesdays. This was not mentioned on Groupon, because why would that be useful information to have BEFORE purchasing? She offered to work with me, but I'd have to pay out of pocket and then request a Groupon refund. Sure. I was already in too deep. The day before my appointment, she called to cancel because a family member was in the hospital. Completely understandable, of course. Then she called back and said never mind, the appointment was back on. I arrived a few minutes early and settled into the salon. Fifteen minutes passed. Then twenty. Sheila was nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, I was paying for street parking, so every minute was literally costing me money. Eventually, Sheila arrived, looking less than thrilled to see me. A warm welcome would've been nice, but apparently that wasn't included in the Groupon either. She asked if I needed a haircut after the treatment. I sarcastically said yes, explaining that I'd actually cut my own hair because, you know, I have 16-month-old twins. I thought it was funny. Sheila did not. Comedy is subjective, apparently. Then came the keratin treatment. The product supposedly claimed to be organic. Lovely. I wasn't there to debate the ingredient list. I wanted straight hair. That was the mission. During the blow-drying process, Sheila repeatedly burned my scalp with the dryer. I tried to tough it out, but I couldn't help it and said it was really burning. This happened 3 times. Each time, she seemed to suggest it wasn't the dryer. Interesting theory, considering it was my scalp. Several hours later, the keratin treatment was done, and honestly? My hair looked GREAT. For one glorious moment, I thought we'd made it. Then came the haircut. I asked Sheila if my hair was really that bad. She laughed and nodded. Thank you, I guess? Nothing says self-esteem like paying someone to confirm your worst fears. Then she took out a pair of scissors that seemed specifically designed to turn healthy hair into a distressed antique. She started slicing away at the front, and I could practically hear my split ends multiplying. By the time I left, the front of my hair looked fried and choppy. And just when I thought the adventure was over, there was the payment situation. More explanations about the Groupon, more confusion, and somehow I ended up paying more in the long run. I went in hoping to reclaim a little dignity after the beautiful chaos of having twins. I left with great keratin-treated hair and a haircut that continues to haunt me. Would I recommend this salon? No. The keratin was good, but I can buy a flat iron. What I cannot buy is the time it will take for the front of my hair to recover from its encounter with those scissors. Come for the keratin. Bring your own stylist, your own calendar, and possibly a lawyer for the haircut.
