Peruvian food, with different flavors. The chicken was pretty good. It could have had a little bit more flavor but at least it was dry. The rice was very flavorful. Green beans were good as well, with red peppers chopped on top. Plantains were good as well. Sweet just as they should be. I'd like to come back and try the salads or bowls. I have been ordering their Naked Wrap for years and even more so recently. They are usually nice a a big, fresh, ingredients proportionate/well balanced, and the tortilla is fresh and soft. However, all of a sudden they are terrible! Not sure what's going on at this Ballantyne location, but.... 1. The tortilla is different: Smaller & Very Dry. Does not look like a "tomato" tortilla at all (no color/no taste). 2. Occasionally, ingredients have been missing and/or the proportion of ingredients are not balanced and it tastes awful! *Latest experience: Mostly sauce and quinoa, little to no veggies, and a small, dry/crispy "plain" tortilla). We come here so often that I lost count over the last few years. We love the food options. Pretty much everything is healthy IMO. Our favorites are Whole chicken, Arroz con chaufa, soltarito. I try to replicate their green beans at home. Place is always clean and they stay busy with orders anytime we're here and that says we're not the only ones that love their food. This is a great spot with many food options. I love the Peruvian cuisine and that it has a different menu than most restaurants. There are also three sauces, I like using multiple ones and don't have a favorite sauce, but they all were good. This would be a great spot for lunch or dinner! You can get to go orders or eat at the restaurant. I ate there and it had quick service not waiting long to order or get our food. There are leftovers by the trash can/ turn in your dishes. I have loved VIVA since its inception and inital location on Elizabeth. This location doesn't disappoint either. The chicken is so flavorful as is everything on the menu. 2 of my favorite dishes are the Arroz Chaufa and the Chicken Soup. Those are my go-to meals. The savory rice is really well seasoned and moist. It's a dish that warms me and fills me up. I can eat 2 meals off of it. The same goes for the soup. read more

Hadn't shopped for groceries for a while and sure didn't feel like cooking anything after 9pm anyway, so he went to the local Viva chicken which we had stopped ordering from several years ago as we found the food quality had rapidly gone downhill. We've lived in Uptown, SPark & now Ballantyne for quite a while; I think we noticed Viva Chicken going downhill significantly when we lived elsewhere in Charlotte. Things haven't improved, they've only gotten worse. The chicken skin was burnt, the chicken was grisly, the sweet potato fries were cold & mushy and the rice only somewhat edible. I moved to the area from the southwest about a year ago and was dearly missing good authentic south and Central American restaurants. Well this is your place. We ordered 2 half chicken meals tonight from the Ballantyne location and they were shockingly bad. Both boxes had chicken that was charred and burned black. One box was worse than the other. We would have returned them but the drive out there was just too far so late in the evening. We had to cut away the burned parts. You cannot eat that! We have been buying fantastic food from Viva Chicken location near CPCC for years. This Ballantyne location is newer and I will not be going back there. Also, we bought one slice of their cake and it was stale. Ironically, a women entered the store about the time we did and she returned several pieces of that same stale cake as well. This location is found at the Toringdon circle shopping center, and one evening on one of our lasts nights in Charlotte, we called in our order and headed out to pick up the meal. Having never tried Viva Chicken... we were both really surprised at the tastiness of this food! Here's what we got: 1/2 chicken with 2 sides ($12.99) Andina power food salad ($7.15) + chicken ($2.80) Sopa de pollo ($6.25) Starting with the 1/2 chicken, it's listed as a Peruvian rotisserie chicken. As it's roasted, the chicken is especially juicy and fall off the bone tender. As it's peruvian, the flavors are explosive and definitely memorable. We had no trouble finishing the half chicken here, and for our sides, we just ordered double green beans. The beans were a bit on the crunchy side but again the flavor here was where it needed to be to gobble these down. Good good food! I didn't try the power food salad with chicken, but the salad turned into its own meal, which was a bit of a surprise to both of us. I heard nothing but good things from it. The sopa de pollo comes with pulled rotisserie chicken and their in house chicken broth. Rounding the soup out were diced red pepper, red onion, green onion, cilantro and rice. I opted to have the rice removed. Just like everything else I tried here at Viva, the chicken soup was joy one spoonful at a time. I'm sure it would also be very filling with rice too so feel free to keep that in when you order yours. This was a to go order for us so I can't speak much at all on customer service. They were fast and accurate so that's great in my book. Parking was not an issue at all located in the shopping center, but at night we also parked right in front of the store. Review is for family style takeout. 3.5/5 stars Picked up lunch for the family and liked that I was able to convince them of trying something new! We got rotisserie chicken, green beans, cilantro rice, and sweet potato fries. Surprisingly my favorite item was the green beans. Really good, great flavor. I also enjoyed the cilantro rice. We liked the chicken but I felt it could have had a been more flavor to it considering it's marinated and cooked with spices. My least favorite item was surprisingly the sweet potato fries which were flavorless and cold. Ultimately, I would return here and eat in person as I think the food would have been warmer. read more

Slowly, but surely I've become a big fan to the arroz chaufa (vegetarian) bowl. The Aji Amarillo Sauce (Mild / Yellow), Huacatay Sauce (Medium / Green) is a must mix for me over my rice as it gives a mild, spicy flavor. The sweet potato fries are my go-to sometimes, but the herbal limeade is my favorite! Definitely an acquired taste, but TRY IT! read more

First as a take out from this location, last time, we sat for a casual dinner here, since this place it's kinda of a more upscale fast-food joint. It's supposed to be Peruvian food, but I'm not sure about its authenticity. Rotisserie chicken - each time I had it, the chicken wasn't well cooked in my book, pink-ish too. Taste- rather bland. This time I ordered the Great sandwich on ciabatta (decent) with added avocado (they charge extra). Once again, the chicken could have been better cooked. The sandwich was just OK, I don't think it was that great! I had a side of cilantro rice which is white rice with some veggies, super bland, didn't taste any cilantro. I had to keep putting the house sauces on for some flavor. My husband had the fries with his sandwiches and that was a better choice, they were decent. I can't say their salads are super fresh, nothing to rave about. Sauces- you need them since the food is bland. The yellow one is probably the best. The green is more spicy and the red too spicy. The best part for the meal was Sangria, pretty good. Customer service is OK. The atmosphere (we ate outside) is pretty loud and crazy, people who work here are always around, in your way. The restrooms could be cleaner. Like I said, locals rave about this place, I can't warm up to it. Not convinced. read more

Unfortunately this review is a downgrade from the original 5 stars. When I first reviewed Viva Chicken the food was amazing. The portions were large and you definitely got you money's worth. I have noted over the past few years the food portions have decreased the sauces (which were fantastic) are watered down rationed and prices increased. I will say I have never been to a Viva Chicken, but I am looking forward to going and trying them out with their full menu. Our neighborhood decided to do a food catering order from them and we joined in on the order! The order came from this location. Unfortunately with a neighborhood order, you do not get much of a choice - get to go off of their catering menu, which doesn't offer much selection. I guess it made it easy to make a quick decision! We ended up going with a whole chicken with three sides. Our neighborhood had a specific delivery time at our pool clubhouse. I walked over to the pool and two kind staff members were there asking for our name and handed over our bag of goods. The food: Chicken - flavorful. I really did enjoy it. Cilantro rice - it was okay for me. Definitely needed one of their sauces Plantains - loved these!! Couldn't get enough of them. Canary beans - definitely full of flavor, different than any other beans that I have had before. A little bit of a spice kick to them as well. I enjoyed these. Here is where Viva can improve: 1. I am new to Viva and their chicken comes with sauce. It would have been nice had there been descriptions on the website regarding what the sauces are - at least maybe listing that the medium is green, or whatever the mild, medium, hot, colors they correlate with. That way when I get them, I know. I like spicy, but I do not like hot. So when we got our sauces in the containers, had no idea which was what - not labeled. Had there been a description online or the containers been labeled, I would have been able to tell. Unfortunately that meant a taste test. 2. Their ordering system, at least with the catering order part - after I chose the sides and added it to my cart, I could not go back and modify my order (or at least it would not let me) - I decided I wanted to change one of my sides. So I had to go back and start all over. 3. Catering options - There were only two main options with sides after you chose those options. It would be nice to have one or two more options or even have the option for additional sides (maybe I could have if I called in?) I ordered a twelve-dollar chicken sandwich that was very bland. I asked that it be served in a sun- dried tomato wrap, which the menu said was an option. What I got instead was a regular flour tortilla, which was every bit as flavorless as the chicken itself. Stopped by the get a quick bite since many said it was an awesome place. Well it was ok and unfortunately the food was cold, even when I asked for it to be reheated. All for the cold food such as the Quiona avocado and the tres leches was great but the chicken, green beans and yuca were less than warm. The best item was the avocado but I came here for the chicken and they disappointed me. I have enjoyed other Peruvian restaurants and if you could mix Alpaca's Chicken and sides with the Avocado and tres leches I think they would be an exceptional place.
