    Eco Paving & Masonry

    Hyde Park

I recently contracted Eco Paving and Masonry to repave our driveway. We've lived at our current…read morehome for almost 32 years, and the asphalt driveway was in bad shape; cracks, low points, poor drainage, etc. I want to say right off the bat, they did a fine job on the driveway. No cracks, the surface is uniformly smooth, no low spots where puddles form, the edges were clean and beveled, and rainwater is channeled away from the house. There were some pavers that needed resetting and they did it very well. However, if one wants to hire them, there are some things to consider. They had stopped by once and gave us a sales pitch, and even took us to two or three jobs they had just completed. We talked to them but the number they left us with was just too high. Then, a few weeks later, they stopped by on a Friday and said they had other jobs in the area the next week and wanted to include ours. We haggled and agreed to a price. THEN they said they needed to start the job the following Monday (less than three days notice), and the head guy said he would drop by Monday morning with the contract to sign. However, between my wife and I, we had multiple non-negotiable commitments that day, and this short notice was not ideal for us. Our first appt on Monday was very early. I got home from the appointment and there was a crew there already working on the project; I hadn't signed anything yet. I talked to the foreman and he went to his vehicle, called his boss, and returned with a contract. It had the amount we agreed upon documented and that was my main concern. There were a couple minor things during the job that I had to mention: 1. My wife had just planted some delicate flowers and they were dragging the water hose all over them. They should have known better but I talked to them about it. 2. One worker was walking around with large holes in his pants and it was obvious he was wearing no underwear Towards the end of the job I asked about their preferred payment method. That's when I found out they accepted cash only. Maybe they mentioned that the Friday before when this all was being planned, but neither my wife nor I heard it. We we're caught off guard. Fortunately, our bank was very accommodating, but withdrawing that amount of cash this short notice proved to be a logistical nigh mare for us, and the process took us about half the day. By the time we returned home from this task, they were gone. The Eco Paving rep stopped by to pick up the payment (he trusted us enough that he didn't even count it). We told him the aforementioned concerns that happened during the project. I gave him the money without doing any final detailed inspection, as we were in a rush for out last appointment. That's on me. We went to our function and got home late. The next morning I performed my own inspection and found that the crew ended up with a considerable pile of dirt, and instead of asking me where it could be dumped, they just dumped it right on the lawn. They had also left our garden hose on before leaving. Both of these are annoying, but minor. The BIGGEST issue: In order to do the driveway properly they had to break up and remove quite a bit of asphalt near the garage. This in itself was the right thing to do, but they left all those pieces of broken asphalt piled up in the yard! I figure that I could just move the pieces of asphalt to the edge of the street, getting it off the grass, and the city would pick it up. When I called the city, they told me they wouldn't touch it. They don't pick up waste asphalt. They said Eco Paving, as part of their job, was to haul away any waste like that. In the meantime I would be fined by the city for having it piled by the street. I had to move it back into my grass! I called Eco Paving, but got no response. I waited three days and called them again. I also concurrently emailed them explaining the situation. They never called back. They never responded to my email. It appears that they got their money and they are done with me. In fact, part of the sales pitch was that they would return every year for five years to seal the driveway. I'm afraid to say I have my doubts that will happen. Lastly, the driveway was asphalted right up to our garage. We have three decorative wooden pillars (not weight bearing). While they were working around these posts, two were moved off center / cockeyed. Instead of being vertical, they are several degrees off square. And they just paved around it that way! It looks horrible! If they would have contacted me when I called and emailed them it would have gone a long way in customer relationships. But they didn't, and those of you reading this review need to consider that. I had to go through a lot of trouble to correct the messes they left. So if you choose this company to do your driveway, expect a good job on the craft that they know, but don't pay them a RED CENT until you have thoroughly inspected the job.
