I went in to get my back brakes replaced and my back tire inner tube replaced (I brought the inner tube). I was told this service would take a couple days, which I expected, and left my bike with them. I then received a message 2 days later saying they had replaced the inner tube and just needed to get confirmation to go ahead with some brake repairs, which I approved for the estimated price of 76.02. I then heard nothing from them for 3 weeks. As it is midterm season and I am in a challenging major, I didn't have time to be thinking about my bike, so I assumed parts were on back order or something. Eventually I caved and messaged possible times I could pick up the bike. I was then messaged after both of the times I gave, such that I couldn't pick up my bike for another week. When finally messaged back, I discovered they uncharged me to 116.02 for a service I did not approve. When I eventually made it into the shop, I inquired about the time and the price. The employee I talked to gave me attitude saying, "It sounds like you should open your own bike shop." After repeatedly telling the employee I was talking to I was not mad and simply curious as to what happened, he told me someone put the bike on a rack upstairs and forgot about it for nearly a month. In the end, they took 20$ off the total (still 20$ more than what I was sent in an itemized list). Adding to the review as it doesn't feel right that the business owner can make inappropriate reply statements. Additionally, making fun of the gift (bike computer) given to me from my kids shows their real character and should not be conveyed by a business owner to anyone. Taking 2 weeks to mount tire to a new wheel was my frustration and disappointment with Virtuous. Business owner did not address this in his reply. I did not accuse staff of stealing, I asked where bike was stored during the 2 weeks and if everyone visiting business has access. When visiting the store and seeing the disorganization and randomness of which the bikes were stored about, it seemed likely that something could go missing, that's why I asked. Tire on new wheel has not been able to keep air in it since bringing home. Worst service experience I have ever had, would give zero stars if could. Left bike at shop as it needed a new wheel, gave directions on size of wheel and tire to order to the service tech. Received notice that items were ordered and it arrived in a few days, however it took 2 weeks to get it installed. When picking up noticed tire and valve was incorrect size. Positive note, they were able to switch out and get me out the door in 15min and I appreciated that, but it left me thinking.... why did it take 2 weeks to get my wheel and tire installed when it took 15min. when they had it incorrect. Entire operation felt disorganized, and that technicians were working to accommodate everyone who stops in for minor repairs vs those who had come in before them. Side note, when testing riding my bike noticed front tire was flat, gears did not shift correctly, and I was missing my bike computer. Want to support local businesses but this experience was terrible. read more

Quick service - totally trustworthy. They have good quality suppliers and have been helpful both with my son's bicycle and my (more complicated) electric bicycle. They have a generous trade-in policy for kids' bikes -when my son outgrew his old bike, they took back his old one and gave us half of the value of the old one in credit towards a new one. read more

My hubby needed the sprockets on his Schwinn bike adjusted so we stopped by Virtuous Cycles. While we waited adjusted them. We were also able to get a cell phone mount for his bike. This is a great local bike shop that offers good service. They have a buy back bike program that we will look into next time we buy a bike. There is plenty of parking and they have loads of accessories for any bike rider. read more

Im writing this review, which I rarely do ever for a service. Never have I felt more disrespected as a client/customer than I did with Virtuous cycles. On two occasions I sent my Kestrel scooter in for repair. The first time was for the accelerator that they fixed months earlier but broke again. The scooter stayed there for weeks and when I called asking about it, they admitted verbatim that they "dropped the ball" and only then did they order my parts. The second time I came in, it was for a simple wheel replacement which should not have taken more than 4 days. It took almost a month and its still not done. I have not heard anything, they did not text, did not call, did not email and never responded to my complaints over email. On top of this, the man taking my work order was exceptionally rude and made me feel like nuisance for entering the shop. I highly recommend NOT going here and I will be taking my money and repairs somewhere else. Absolutely unacceptable. read more

I work at a bike shop in Tampa and used to live in Indianapolis. When a customer needed to ship her son's new $600 bike up for him to ride at Purdue last August, I recommended Virtuous because I knew they had a really good reputation and the shop is close to campus. We just got the bike back here in April and Virtuous did a GREAT careful job packing up his bike. I even took a photo. This morning I had problems with my bike. I found out that I had broken two spokes in my rear wheel and I was completely clueless as to how to get the wheel off. A call to the dealer where I purchased my Trek Townie was meet with an immediate 1.5 to 2 weeks before we can even look at it. I was desperate. I need, actually need to ride every day. I need to lose summer weight before my doctor will consider doing knee surgery. And every day that passes, the one goes more and more painful. I remembered how Virtuous Cycle helped out when a guest who was literally riding his bicycle around the world broke down. So I have them a call. If you don't mind waiting 2 hours, we'll get it done. So I made the 90 mile round trip to the store. Due to COVID-19, I could not go inside, so I was meet at the door where they looked over the bike. Sure enough, a bit over 2 hours later my ride was ready ... and they went beyond the 2 broken spokes. The tech showered me how to remove the shift mechanism so I could remove the rear wheel ... He had to completely reset all of the spokes because the dealer who set up the bike didn't check any of them ... and he tested the brakes because they were out of adjustment. Now here is the kicker ... $27 for the whole job. My next bike will be coming from Virtuous Cycle. read more

My rear wheel on my bike broke a spoke and I took it in here, at first everything seemed fine. then the next day they said my wheel was ready which was nice because that was faster than I had expected but when I got there to pick the wheel up, they hadn't replaced one of the spokes they were supposed to replace and my entire cassette was off of the bike. They finally found the cassette, but the inside of the hub was also missing and there was just a bunch of parts lying around the shop so they had to look for it and a mess of stuff. Then they finally found it the day after that and I paid for it and when I ask for a discount, she said that I was lucky they didn't charge me twice for it since they had to work on it twice even though it was their fault that they didn't fix it correctly the first time. (Also some of the spokes were a bit more loose than they should have been even after the second time). I am a member of the Purdue cycling team and have worked in a bike shop for , please go to Hodson's and NOT Virtuous Cycles. 7/10 repair 1/10 customer service. read more

Had a very awkward experience at the register as two employees who were husband and wife argued while I was trying to make a purchase. Later I found out that the bike I had purchased had an MSRP of $200 new, while I had paid $350 for a used model. I ended up getting an 85% refund but still very annoyed at the whole thing. read more

Fix your Sturmey-Archer three-speed shifter from the 1943 Raliegh? Yawn. Want that funky accessory item that you cant find or didn't know existed? You might be surprised. VC's big deal for me is the selection and QUALITY of clothing. I ride a lot and I wear cheaper bike clothes out too fast for them to be good values. I also hate buying clothes and shoes online because fit varies so widely. So its a deal. They carry Endura, a Scottish line that I was happy to find and wears like iron. I just started riding my bicycle again and decided to get a new bike for my birthday. I am a novice when it comes to bicycles so I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted. The staff members very generously helped me find a bike that I desired within my price range. I also purchased new tires for the bike and they swapped the tires out free of charge at the same time teaching me how to change the tires myself in the future. All of the staff members were polite and beyond respectful, and at no point did I feel rushed despite them being busy. The customer service they provided was remarkable. read more

Had a great prior experience with virtuous cycles until today. About three months ago I introduced my bike to have the foot pedal reattached to the crank because it snapped off. Virtuous Cycles repaired it sufficiently...or so I thought. Following a normal accident-and-mishap-free riding experience since then, just yesterday while riding 19.4 mph, the same pedal started to come off the crank again, making it impossible to ride. Hence, I walked my bike the remaining 4 miles or so home. So I called virtuous cycles back today to explain my situation, and requested a recommendation of what to do / if they could repair it again. After being provided a wishy-washy, filibuster-style "explanation" as to the causes and "future prevention" of my issue, I simply stated to the staff I will never be coming back. Here's a service recovery hint for you, Virtuous Cycles...maybe next time say something like "I'm sorry this happened to you, why don't you go ahead and bring your bike in and we'll take a look at it once more, and we'll fix it". Instead, you seemed to flat-out immediately evade any responsibility of my issue...it was such a non-customer-focused presentation from you. Well, there's plenty of other bike shops out there, so onward I go in my search of better service, and appropriate repairs. I'll never return to your store, Virtuous Cycles...and something tells me you could really care less about that. Have you ever walked into a shop and you swear you must be invisible? Well, that happened to me on Thursday, June 22nd at Virtuous Cycles. I stood there for 10 minutes while 2 people worked on bikes toward the back and another person helped someone with a bike. When the person with the bike left the shop the person helping him just turned and walked to the back of the shop. I stood around for another couple of minutes and then decided to make my exit. My problem was simple. I assembled the bicycle myself, and being a first-timer, I did not tighten the screws very well. In a month or so, the brakes became very loose, and I did not know how to fix them. I searched for bike repair shops near me, and found this place with excellent reviews. The bar is set very high, I thought. I took it to Virtuous cycles. I was greeted by a person and I explained my problem to him. He took a look at the bike, and told me it would take x dollars to repair. I waited for 20 minutes, he repaired everything, tightened the handle bar, checked the air pressure and gave it back with exemplary care. In the middle of all the money-minded auto repair shops, such nice people to take care of bikes seem to exist!!! If you have any bike issues, this is the place to go to. To them: keep up the good work! Pros: Nice people, honest upfront approach (in terms of payment), value for money, walk-ins accepted for minor repairs (I presume). Cons: Lack of waiting area for customers, which is partially compensated by the large collection of new and used bikes on display. Their prices are extremely competitive (even compared to online), the quality of their service is phenomenal, and they really want to make sure that you love your bike. This is hands down the best bike shop I've EVER experienced. I came to town on a work assignment and I'm an avid mountain biker. I spoke with Zoe over the phone and he eagerly fixed me up with a Kona full suspension. He even let me set it up tubeless and gave me a helmet to use. I kept the bike the entire time I was there (6 weeks) and he charged me a very reasonable price. His staff was very courteous and helpful. If you're looking for a bike shop in the area, don't look further - Virtuous. Although I never got to meet Zoe (missed him each time), he had informed his staff on what to do to help me. While they don't have the 3 or 4 name brand bikes the average non-cycling person would recognize, they carry a nice selection of quality bicycles for any type of cycling someone wants to do.
