Okay fine, since it has retail stores, a couple of restaurants, a bank, health, fitness, and beauty shops; We'll leave it at that and call it a "mall". Finding this place is pretty simple as it borders close to Lafayette. Yet it lays tucked away, hidden in a residential part of Walnut Creek. What stores are anchoring this mall you ask? Well let's see, there's the grocery store Lunardi's and a Rite Aid with a Thrifty Ice Cream parlor. I can't say that I've been to all the stores, but here's what's provided: ~ A Wee-Change - a maternity consignment store. ~ Viola! Gift Store - they've got cool and unique items here. ~ Norge Cleaners, Shoe Repair and Tailoring shop. ~ Queen's Nails ~ Maria's Beauty Salon ~ Beauty Lounge - Another unique shop with a bar. This mall has so many jewelry stores, it's crazy! there's even a barber shop for men on first floor which was different. There's a JC Penny here and like walking around bring back old memories of stores I grew up with with Spenser, Sweet Factory store for sour patch kids candy, Hallmark, and life uniforms. I felt their food court had a strange layout as on first floor all their sweets where there and 2 main food places sushi and newly open Mexican in the mall. I don' t know if this mall is ever packed and it's not totally the mall's fault - buying stuff on line has really killed the brick-and-mortal stores in general and I get it. But holy smokes, the stores here - it's multiple variations of the same crap stores. Who buys this stuff? There are some stores that I absolutely cannot believe make enough money to stay open. They have to pay rent and employee salaries and make some sort of profit and you wonder how it's possible. If you go here and look around, you'll know what stores I'm talking about. I was walking around here yesterday was just amazed at the absolute garbage stores. One "kitsch" store (and there are many) proudly displayed some poster about "stupid people" by its entrance that you could buy - for people to buy to make fun of stupid people - yet literally the only people who would buy this are the people it makes fun of. And you can't walk into these stores because the second you do the employee is on you. Like Blockbuster where every employee had to greet you and see if you need anything. I just want to look around without being bothered but it's not possible in these stores. They have so little people in them, when an employee does get someone they hover. You do still have some good stores - Macys of course, an old standby with good stuff - you can't go wrong with a Macys. Even JC Penneys is still here (I didn't even know they were still around). The Sears finally went out and to no one's surprise, they couldn't care less about that store for years now. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. And the clientele walking around. You have your people of all ages and races which you want to see. California is represented well at this mall and I like that. And of course your thugs always wasting time walking around - disturbs me seeing these guys. I guess the mall can't do anything about them but yeah, they're here. On the plus side, the mall is super clean. I'd like to hope that this mall, one of the malls I've been to for decades will still be around for a long time but honestly, if this thing still exists in three years I'd be shocked.

There's plenty of places to shop and plenty of places to eat and probably fits with budgets of all different sizes. It has the staples that you tend to see at other outlet malls and centers but have unique eateries and shops as well. During this time of year (November), there's also an ice rink that lots of people seem to enjoy. Some family wanted to go to Sephora and man it was packed! Which is not surprising, since we were there on the busy shopping day of the year. I got to do some other browsing at J Crew. It was a short trip overall, but I can easily see people spending hours here if they needed to do some serious shopping. Came here with family because they wanted to do some shopping on Black Friday. It was really hectic as you would expect. The parking situation was pretty crazy and it took a while of driving around and luck to get a parking spot.

Cars circling incessantly looking for that elusive space. Some drivers obviously getting impatient based on their rapid acceleration and sudden braking whenever it appeared that someone was approaching their vehicle or stepped on their brake pedal. From what little we observed, there is a very good mix of business present which is great to see. So many other destination shopping areas are suffering vacancies and closed businesses. I imagine that parking is not such a mess during the day or perhaps on weeknights and yes, this was the day after New Years so more people were probably out and about. Still, had I really understood what the parking situation was like, I would have made reservations for another night. And it wasn't any better when we left at 7pm either.

The Chevron was on the corner. The rest of the strip mall was probably built prior to 1979. I worked there at Safeway through the entire construction. That Safeway Store number was 720, that number meant that it was a very old store. During the time that the strip mall was being built Safeway kicked out the front and side of the building making it much larger. At that point they gave the store a new number. It was 720 and they added a 9 to the front of the store number and eliminated the zero at the end making the new store number 972 which at that time reflected a much newer building.

It's a tiny shopping center located off of Gregory lane right between the Contra Costa Canal trail and the nearby Zio Fraedo's restaurant. There are two main reasons why I frequent this Plaza: 1) La Mordida Mexican restaurant And 2) Mirage Nails I'm completely addicted to La Mordida! I started coming here over a year ago and it has quickly become my favorite hole in the wall Mexican spot! Recently, I discovered Mirage Nails next door and have started coming here to get my nails done. It's the perfect combo, right?! Pamper myself with a mani and then right after, pamper myself with some Mexican goodness. Yep... this is why I can't stay away from Sandalwood! I'll admit that I haven't visited any of the other businesses in this plaza quite yet, but there really isn't too much else going on in there. There's a bike shop across the way that's been for quite sometimes. There's also a fitness center, a yoga place, a day spa, and a liquor store. Not sure if I'll be visiting any of these businesses anytime soon, but I'm sure I'll end up hitting up a few of them in the future since I come to this shopping center about once a week or so. There's always parking available in their parking lot since this a plaza that is far less frequented than many others in the neighborhood. However, parking can be tight since the lot is small. All in all, it's a nice local shopping center with a great Mexican restaurant and a nice nail salon.

But I usually go here to go to the store on the way to Walnut Creek or on my way back home. I have walked around this spot, hoping to find another there, there, but there isn't one. I don't know what an update would look like, because it's so old and past it's time. And some of the places that I'd go to - there was a health store - gone, a burger joint - gone, the fancy, healthy food spot - gone, the cupcake spot - gone. You do have to pay for parking, but it's been safe. But still, metered parking in a "dying" shopping center? I'd think that they'd love to have people park. I've been to other places up and down the street and this is the only one where you have to pay! And they have one store, so I only pay for 15 minutes or so. But what a waste! I'd pay for a couple of hours and spend time bouncing from shop to shop, but that won't happen beecause everytime they get another shop of note, it closes down. This is an old school plaza and I want to like it more than I do. I wish they updated themselves, like El Cerrito Plaza. They have some of the same buildings, but built others. they have also updated their offerings and when something closes, another quality store joins them.
