My wife and I both had a great visit to the Virginia Cafe. We were in Portland for the art museum and after the viewing, we were looking for a restaurant that was casual but had excellent burgers. We found it. Our server Steven was perfect. He was extremely friendly and timely with the beverages and the food. My wife had the SW Burger, garden burger style, with the accompanying tator tots. She loved it. I had the classic cheese burger and it was also very good, served with hot and crispy french fries. Both also came with an excellent pickle spear. Thanks Virginia Cafe.

This place has been around for a while now. We stopped by for just a quick drink or two to help with our thirst. We were pretty much the only ones here and sat at the bar. The place is smaller and has video lottery. The bartender was nice and quick with our drinks. Overall, it was a good experience.

We found this place from a video poker search but it's so much more. A true piece of history. The lighting is perfect for a chill atmosphere. Our bartender Ana was amazing and cool. We had an appetizer, chips and salsa which were so fresh and delicious. We'll be back to try more of the menu. The perfect old school spot!

I call it Shane's special, but he called it something else.

My husband and I were in town for some personal time and celebrations. We happen to come across this place because we were staying in the area. We have been to a couple of other places, but oh my gosh let me tell you we had one of the best nights we've had in a while. Our time here was everything we didn't know we needed. If you get the chance to come to this establishment, I hope you get to have Shane as your bartender. He's so genuine, authentic, and so personable. It felt like we have known him forever. This was hands down one of our greatest experiences on this trip! Thank you Shane for just being yourself and so attentive. We hope our paths cross again. I'd come back just for him and the ambiance. We also got some food and it was also delicious. Over all, our time here was truly gifted to us thanks to Shane!

The place you GET to go when nothing else is open.

They took the London Broil off the menu a long time ago, but I keep seeing it mentioned in reviews. Can you order it anyway?

There is a dining area just off the bar with some table seating; larger 4- and 6-top tables are closer to the right side of the bar as you enter. To the left, 2-tops transition to more open lounge seating. We shared delightful dishes from the late-night menu: the Brussels sprouts, the chicken tenders and the smash burger. I recommend all of them if those kinds of snacks are to your taste. I enjoyed a couple of good, ice - cold martinis. My beloved told our server that she couldn't find anything that quite called out to her from the sophisticated mocktails menu and asked if something sweet and cherry-flavored could be made for her. The bar delivered with an impressively balanced drink garnished with a cured cherry. "Because," as our server told us, "everyone deserves a swizzle stick." The food, drinks and service all were wonderful. For a restaurant, the thumping house music was a little oppressive. That was the club aspect of this place's identity. Still a great place to get a late night in downtown Portland.

I had lunch at the High Horse restaurant on the second floor on a Friday. This is a review of the…read morerestaurant and lunch only. They have some improvements to make which are attainable. On entering for lunch, the customer journey is unknown. We should not be an explorer without a map! In front of the stairs is a stand one would logically consult on seating. You would usually have a sign, which today should span languages, on seating. "Seat yourself" or see front-ofhouse person. But no, the stand in front of the stairs is not the front-ofhouse person. They are dedicated to providing utensils and napkins. How does a new arrival even know where the front-of-house person is? Restaurant 101. The front-of-house is behind the bar and not very attentive to new arrivers. New arrivers are your customers! That person is also the final bill person. By observation they seemed idle much of the time. Next, the upholstery of my seat was stained. Either clean it to invisibility or replace it. Any restaurant should check the condition of tables and chairs daily. At this level of restaurant, it is basic. We are not a dive. I was there for their loss leader crab sandwich special but ordered more, so I was not a loss leader customer. Bring a real napkin because a dish with small pieces will have small pieces fall out. The server from the kitchen brought small paper cocktail napkins. Instead I had to get a napkin and fork from the utensils and napkins cart myself. I guess, oddly, becoming familiar with where napkins were, thinking they were front-of-house, was useful in disguise! No refilling water. The dishes seem to be served by kitchen staffers. There was no checking on customer experience mid-meal or on billing. "Is/was everything OK?" Wow! I would have told them what I am writing. The menu was pretty standard today in items and price. I would say my sandwich was unnecessarily salted. I'm in favor of flavored by ingredients. I would say this is a fine hotel bar among many choices downtown. It is on the second floor, aside from the stains, pleasant, and there are public spaces in this hotel for meetups and meetings. But it needs a review of customer experience design, who does what, and the customer journey, stat. If Marriott is doing this nationally, they are failing. Good design is not expensive, it can operate at any price point. Maybe robots will improve things? None of the staffers should be blamed, it is design and management which are lacking.

To speak about Teardrop Lounge, I should probably start with this:…read more Ladies and gentlemen, I present my favorite cocktail bar. Not the best -- I'm not arrogant enough to claim that. I haven't been to every cocktail bar in Portland, and saying something is the best usually says more about your lack of experience than your conviction. But favorite? That I can stand behind. And I want to get that out of the way early, because of the amount of praise I'm about to pour on this place -- fully earned, completely intentional. The biggest crime here is that I only discovered it two weeks ago, after living in Portland for a year. It had been recommended to me countless times, and I ignored it. A mistake. A painful one. But now that I've found it, I don't plan on making that mistake again. I'm not typically an Old Fashioned drinker. In fact, I usually hate them. But somewhere between curiosity and too many episodes of Mad Men, I decided to try one anyway -- fully expecting to confirm my bias. Instead, it completely flipped me. Bright, almost citrus-forward in a way that felt unusual but entirely intentional. Balanced, smooth, just enough burn to remind you what you're drinking without overwhelming it. It was the first time I actually understood the appeal. I'm pretty sure I grew a few chest hairs that night. That alone would've been impressive. But it didn't stop there. The space is beautiful -- clean, intentional, but not cold. The staff are excellent: personable, engaged, and most importantly, authentic. Not scripted, not performative. The kind of people you actually want to talk to, and hopefully, eventually be on a first-name basis with. Now, all of that gets it close to a perfect score. But what pushes it over the edge -- what makes this place stick -- is the White Russian. One of the first drinks I ever had. My dad's drink. Not because of The Big Lebowski -- that came later -- but because it's just always been his thing. And at some point, it became mine too. Typically, when bars try to "elevate" a White Russian, they ruin it. They overthink it. Swap ingredients, tweak ratios, add unnecessary flair. And more often than not, it ends in disappointment. Teardrop does the opposite. They respect it -- but refine it. The coffee liqueur actually tastes like coffee. The heavy cream is properly integrated, not just dumped on top. The vodka -- whatever they're using -- is clean, present, and perfectly measured. There's a subtle complexity to it without losing what makes the drink what it is. It's the best White Russian I've ever had. No hesitation. I've gone back twice just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. If someone asked me what my death row drink would be -- this specific cocktail, from this specific bar, is in the conversation. Easily. Teardrop Lounge doesn't just make great cocktails. It reminds you why cocktails matter in the first place. And that's why it's my favorite.

But as soon as I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised. The interior is beautiful, with a stylish central bar that immediately catches your eye. Although they do serve food, I wasn't very hungry, so I decided to just enjoy a couple of drinks. There are a few dining tables inside if you're planning to have a meal as well. The bartender was incredibly friendly and took the time to chat with me after I asked for a few recommendations. The drinks were excellent, well-balanced, flavorful, and actually tasted like proper cocktails instead of just juice. They definitely didn't skimp on the alcohol either! I'm really glad I chose this place to celebrate. It ended up being the perfect spot for the occasion.
