The small shop serves a variety of items like rolls, sashimi, and nigari where they have small and large platters as well as individual combos. I've actually passed by this sushi shop many times around the neighbourhood but never have tried them before. Reviews online also indicate that the food is decent and well-liked. I opted for try VIPS Sushi as I was scrolling through a delivery app. I can't speak on the service of the place but can only comment on the food. I did get a combo order, 9 nigiri sushi and 12 pieces of assorted sashimi. I also got a spicy salmon roll as well (each roll comes with 6 pieces). Food wise, the combo order I got was great! I got some delicious salmon sashimi pieces. The sushi rice was made well. I thoroughly enjoyed the set and had leftovers. Wanted to try this spot for a while. The service was super quick and nice, which was really good! They only take cash and debit... Make sure you've got those! Oh my heavens! This place saved my life (and my relationship) during COVID LOL. A small spot but believe the positive reviews. The. Hype. Is. Real. Unlike the hype next door for those silly corn dogs. The dragon rolls are the most popular and I can see why. It is monstrous and does not disappoint. However, I didn't taste a major difference between the white or black dragon roll so by default they are my 2 favorite. This is a must!!! The regular spicy salmon is such a good value and I always add this on. SO yummy and you won't find such a delicious roll for this price in this neck of the wood. Their tempura is fantastic too. They are so nice, they will fry the tempura close to when you are headed over to pick up so that it isn't soggy. Everyone is always so polite and friendly. They also have their own special spicy mayo sauce they include with everything. BUT heads up! Cash or Debit only! Quite surprised to see a 25% increase in price ($9.99 to $12.49). The rolls are pretty solid and the sushi pizza is nice at times. The only thing is that it felt like they increased the filler for spicy salmon/tuna/imitation crabmeat. It just feels a bit more oilier than before. Best rolls i've had so far. These guys are THIC & FILLED. The filling to rice ratio is spot on. Due to their phat size, 1 roll is actually filling enough for 1 person. They are quite busy/slow with walk-in, phoned orders, and delivery orders. Even calling ahead 30 mins, we still had to wait about 15 mins. Definitely will return. Since we enjoyed the white tuna tataki roll so much, we were in the area today so decided to get that again AND to try another roll. We had the white tuna tataki roll PLUS the scallop tataki roll and OMGOSHHHHHH, it was soooo good! Seriously aburi sushi vibes again. Smallest restaurant that I've ever been to. There are only two tables that can seat four. Very sketchy-looking, from the name to the overall appearance of the restaurant. VIPS is more so a takeout restaurant rather than a place where you sit down and eat. Of course, at the end of the day, food and service are the two fundamental factors that make a restaurant a good one. Staff were polite and friendly. Portions are very generous - the edamame was a lot for one person (though I appreciated its large portion) and the rainbow roll was bigger than average! I was very full when I left. I could not finish all of the edamame unfortunately, but oh well - I got a lot of protein that day! Their menu is very basic - you get a few options for appetizers, and most of their menu consists of classic-style sushi (i.e. dragon rolls, sashimi). No bento boxes or all you can eat here. Just classics with big portions. Very wholesome menu overall. Payment was a bit inconvenient for me because it was debit or cash only. I only had my credit card with me and I didn't really want to run off to an ATM or bank to get cash. I ended up sending money to the restaurant instead. I suggest that VIPS have credit card available or make it an official thing for their customers to e-transfer them money, considering how they are, for the most part, an order-to-go restaurant. I'm sure some of their customers have run into the same problem as I did when I came in. Having a wider variety in payment options would certainly help for customers. This tiny place has large specialty rolls, and they're delicious! We always get 3 of their torched rolls: salmon, eel, and scallops. What makes their rolls different is that they use a type of shredded crab filling. SO GOOD. Every order comes with a little container of their spicy mayo, even without asking for it. That's a nice touch. It's just off of Yonge St, on Byng Avenue, so finding parking can be tough; especially during peak hours. There's a ZenQ just outside of VIPS Sushi, which is great for dessert. The restaurant itself is designed for takeout orders, as there are only 2 or 3 small tables inside. If you feel like sushi but don't want to spend a fortune, yet you don't want to go as cheap as Sushi Bong (also a great alternative), then VIPS Sushi may be right for you tonight! Don't expect too much on quality here; if you do you'll be disappointed. The rolls are huge and are made faster than fast food. They also artistically design your rolls compared to your typical styrofoam takeout containers. Did I mention the sushi chefs are extremely nice and will acknowledge you entering and leaving? When I had lunch today I noticed they had a "opening special" where most of the special rolls were $2 off. I wasn't sure if it was the fact I arrived in the first hour or if it's a "grand opening" special...despite the fact the place has been open for a good 9 months! So my order ended up costing only $7.99 + tax. I ordered the red spark roll, as I wanted a roll that has some form of avocado and tobiko. For $7.99 these rolls were simply excellent. Most recently, I ordered the dynamite roll and torched salmon roll and they barely had any salmon or shrimp in them - but instead a lot of imitation crab. I ordered the White Dragon and Spicy Salmon Crunch roll. They were both to die for. The white dragon had scorched scallop on top which was unique and almost half the roll was filled with crab meat. I don't know how they season that crab but wow what a heavenly burst of flavors. The spicy salmon was so rich and decadent I think my brain was flooded by serotonin. First off, I'd like to say we love this place. We get takeout here on a regular basis and they have always been consistent with their quality. Yes, they have been slowly raising their prices but that's expected. However, recently we ordered takeout and I saw something I wish I didn't see. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I notice they kept their rice outdoors on a chair, out in the open where it could be contaminated. I believe it was too cool the rice down (it was winter time). Considered 1 of the 2 cheap/pick up and go sushi shops in the Yonge/Finch area with Sushi Bong being the other one. The rolls here are JUMBO BIG!! One roll will be enough for a meal. The rolls come with additional spicy mayo on the side with wasabi, soy sauce and pickled ginger. White and black dragon are my fave with torched scallop and eel respectively. They torch the rolls on the spot so you can really taste the charred smokiness. May be an acquired taste if you're not used to the smokiness, but it's fresh. They also receive a lot of orders so I feel pretty confident about the freshness, since they won't have old sushi sitting around. Two things that you should be aware though. The wait is really long, it's about 20 to 30 min (someone ordered a large batch ahead of my order so I guess understandable). Next time I will call in so I don't have to wait in the small shop... The size of the sushi is purely the imitation crab meat, and cucumber filling. I felt the slices of scallop and eel at the top were very thin and because the sushi itself was big, the eel and scallop were ... negligible size. As in, they felt like accessories instead of what should be the main lead in the roll. Because of this I feel $15.50 per roll (after tax, before tips) is kind of pricey. For now, this place gets a 4.5 star review that for Yelp purposes gets rounded up to 5. I think this place is going to be compared to Sushi Bong that is right around the corner and that is how I'll write this review as Sushi Bong seems to be the busiest in the Northtown condo district. Even with a grand opening special and about a dozen of their rolls are 20% off, they are still a bit pricier than Sushi Bong. They also don't have meal combinations/specials so be prepared to pay a bit more. They do have a variety of sushi pizzas that Sushi Bong does not have but they do not have udon noodles. There are two key differentiators for me: 1. They have a larger variety of sushi rolls. Like Sushi Bong, you get a lot in your rolls. To echo another user's review, the diameter is indeed comparable to that of an oreo cookie. 2. You get more fillings in your roll. It is isn't rice that makes it thicker. It's the avocado, the fish, or the cucumber that is adding to the size of the roll. So... you spend a bit more (even with the grand opening special) but you get more for your dollar, as you're getting more ingredients instead of rice. As far as the rolls themselves, the ingredients are very fresh and the completed product looks very appetizing. It's definitely a tasty product! They're still new and I hope they stick to this formula... And even if they don't keep a dozen of their rolls on sale, it would be good to start to offer some kind of combination or have a few rolls on sale for the day or week.
