I was skeptical about going to this restaurant, after reading the reviews. I'm glad that we took the chance and went. Our party of 6 received excellent service. We were seated right away and mugs of hot tea were delivered to us. Our food was brought to our table in no time at all, piping hot. All of our dishes were delicious, including the first course of soup with daikon. We ordered seafood pancakes, stone pots of bibimbab with rice cooked to crunchy perfection, galbi, spicy squid with vegetables, and spicy pork. The side dishes (which must be labor-intensive) were numerous, fresh and tasty. Our waitress volunteered to take a picture of our group, and even offered to retake it, if we weren't satisfied. This is a decent restaurant, but too average for Korean food. If you want authenticity, don't go here, try tofu house restaurant or Jin Mi if you want the real, homemade cooked food. VIP commercializes their food with lots of oils and heavy msg, therefore the food doesn't have that same homemade taste. The service is so-so, depending on who you are. It was very crowded and yet the one and only waitress/busboy/hostess/bartender was whipping around like the Tasmanian devil and she single handedly waited/bussed/cashed out all of the customers. Our food came out right away and was EXCELLENT as usual. I love this restaurant. read more

Hands down by far the BEST Korean food I have had in the US. I like it spicy and they do not disappoint. Kim Bob, Djegi Boulgi, and bean sprout soup are out of this world. It's owned by a wonderful couple who are always there. You swear it is someone's Grandmother who doing all the cooking. Had my baby shower there today, granted it was short notice due to venue complications. The party was hardly checked on or offered refills, demanded to order 'more' 'more'. Was denied a knife or even plates, because the restaurant 'didn't have any' for our party cake. Staff couldn't hardly speak English. One of the guests had to leave for the overwhelming burning food smell the private room aid had. All in all, it dampened the joyous occasion. The best Korean food we've had in a long time. On par with places we visited in Seoul. The banchan were varied, flavorful and generous in number and amount. The japchae was light, chewy and fresh. It wasn't bad service it was nonexistent. Waitress sighed, tapped her foot and was looking in a different direction as we ordered. Soup and kim chi showed up with meal, not before. She threw my bibimbap in my general direction as she walked past our table, not even glancing at us. Food was ok but not great and I couldn't get over the fact that she frisbee-style flung my food at me. Was $50 for 2 lunches and 2 drinks. This is my first time went to VIP. I gave it 2stars. Maybe I'm a little picky, but as a customer, I prefer services to foods. Especially in a restaurant, how the service is will directly determine the mood of the customer is while they're eating. The foods of VIP deserve its price, but not the services. The waitress who served us look and talks like we owe her money. My friend while was looking for bathroom, but they seems like very busy.. we have to wait until they came up then ask. Food is awesome but service sucks! Sometimes i get the feeling that the server is just going with the motion and not really putting any effort in customer service. Especially, this one Korean lady who can be rude at times (not sure but it can be the owner). Back in 2001 is when my mom first took me to the restaurant and loved it but as the years passed, food still great but service declined. And, food is a bit expensive but hey its Alaska. First time here. Service was okay. Took a few minutes to get us seated. I ordered the bulgogi with rice. GF ordered the seafood soup. Came with all the little veggies. The bulgogi was okay. I was expecting it to be great considering this was a actual korean spot. Also it was $12.99. The little veggies was good though. GF like the seafood soup. Service never came around to refill my water. The bill came out to $35 or so. Pretty expensive. I was hungry an hour after. Might give them a try again. read more

I've been there three times and very much appreciate the place. This is for Korean or Chinese food. They don't serve Thai tea and they only have white rice. Just so you know. They have luncheon specials for about $13. which is reasonable given the variety and the twelve little plates of taste treats that come with most offerings. On these I identified cabbage kim chee, radish kim chee, flavored potatoes, green beans, bean curd, and bean sprouts. My meal was the squid which I found fresh and flavorful. Had low expectations for Korean food in Alaska, but was pleasantly surprised. A lot of banchan (side dishes) and a diverse menu. I had the crab stew and it was spicy and tasty- the vegetables were a little undercooked and the crab itself wasn't too great, but the soup was good and like I said the banchan were great. This is a standard Korean restaurant so if you are looking for service and atmosphere, forget it. But for a korean place outside of CA or NY- pretty good. read more

I find myself CONSTANTLY craving this place after the first time I had ever eaten here. VIP does Korean and they do it exceptionally well. If we're being honest, I've never tried anything besides the Kalbi and Hot Stone Bibimbap, but once you have had the best - why try to change? I've eaten at every Tofu House in Anchorage and while they're all pretty similar in terms of flavor, VIP just has something about it that I cannot help but be attracted to. It was a wintery night in Anchorage and you could hear the wind howling. There was a flu going around and you could hear people everywhere coughing and sneezing. I went in this night expecting an average tasting quiet dinner. What I got was a waitress that sneezed into her hands then without washing or sanitizing her hands began setting service on our table, along with glasses of water. I noted this to her. She was deeply insulted and denied everything that I saw just moments before. I asked for another server cause I was tired and hungry, but Mrs Public-Health_Disaster kept coming back to my table to yell at me, so I just left. I will give it 0 star if there is such option. Overpriced weird tasting salty food and one cold poker faced waitress serving all tables, She will only stop by your table to take orders and bring dishes. Watch out for pre-calculated tips on your bill because she won't tell you tip is included, and the receipt is written in Korean, so you have no idea what they are. My friend almost paid double tips until I asked the waitress, and she gave us a very inpatient and bad look. This will be my first and last visit. I forgot to mention that she shouted at the kids "If you spill the water I won't give you a refill" right after we settle down at the table. Nothing is refilled anyway even if there are no spills. While she running around tables, she did not forget to look at the kids with evil and witch-like eyes. Those eyes creep me. It is definitely not a kids-friendly place. The food is very bad tasting, because you can only taste salt and hot pepper. You will intake 10 times more salt comparing to regular meal. For the sake of health, please avoid this place. The dish is tiny. If you come in hungry, you need to double the order which bring up price easily to $40 pp. BTW, tiny bowl of rice is charged at $3 per bowl if it did not come with dishes. read more

This is our fav Korean place in the city. We always look forward to eating there. Tonight at 8pm on a Thursday night it was quiet and WARM! The black cod can serve two medium appetites plus we order dumplings, and took a large take-home box. Service is ok, not especially friendly, even after years of going there, but the food is wonderful. This winter i asked many friends and all say it is their favorite Asian food restaurant too. I am fairly new to Korean food but a Korean friend of mine recommended this place. I have eaten there 3 or4 times now. I love it. I have tried several different dishes, soups, rice dishes, meat whatever. All have been good to excellant. Great portions. The little bowls of appetizers they serve with the meals are fun too. Lots of different flavors. Some of the dishes are spicy hot and some are mellow but all the ones I have had I have enjoyed. Horrible service. We had been there several years ago and liked it. Today there seemed to be a personal/ family gathering going on in one section so the rest of the restaurant was ignored. My spouses meal came and we waited and waited for my entree. We saw the cooks come out of the kitchen with plates of food and start eating! Very good food along with outstanding service. First time we tried this place. Not glamorous but we ordered the spicy pork barbecue and it was a great dish with the 15 or so side dishes. Recommended by a Korean friend who said they did it right and authentic. Five of us ate for $100 including tip though we had no alcohol. Best Korean restaurant in town. They serve plenty of ban chan (side dishes) free of charge in addition to awesome Korean dishes. Some dishes are a little expensive but the amount of food they give you for what you pay is worth it. Customer service can lack at times but it's because there's usually only one waitress working. The food is incredibly good, but the wait time and the service can almost be non existent sometimes. I feel so bad for the lone server when the restaurant gets busy. They have no busser and Jose the owner and chef won't hire one to help the LONE server. If the food wasn't so good, they would be getting a 2 star review, but I've never had anything bad there and everything tastes very authentic and tasty. Hire a busser, Jose! Horrible place, food tasted weird and the customer service was disgusting , when i ordered she was like hollering at me literally, then when it came time to cut some cake we brought because we met up there for a baby shower the same lady said "no we have no knives and no plates " then i asked if they had anything so we can cut our cake she said no we dont have anything again. Very rude negative people, she didnt even come back to ask if everything was ok or refill our water or make sure we didnt want anything else . My first time trying Korean food so I was praying for a good experience. Food was bland, horrible service. Worst customer service I've experienced in my life. Brought the food out, didn't even get checked on once, no water refill, and then brought out the check when our food was not even half way done. I felt as if I were in a hurry.
