Not very many places to see art house movies or limited release movies any more and since Alamo draft house is Sony this is being more the case. I haven't been here since before the pandemic and it's a little more run down since I remember it. The seats are fine and it's a downtown multiplex so my experience is that it will be very intimate. Sadly movie going hasn't recovered to pre covid levels and I was one of 9 people in probably a 60 seat theater. I just got a sparkling water and m&m's and the m&m's even though refrigerated felt stale. So I wonder if the cooked dishes are better. They do have more substantial dishes but I'm not sure how you would eat them inside the theater since there aren't any tables. Oh and the men's restroom needs allot of help. I suspect there's a sewage issue as it just reeks of urine so I had to hold my breath. Will I go again - yes because sometimes it's nice to go out and watch a movie. There aren't many places that host smaller run releases any more and it would be sad to see these places go. I just won't get the candy or go to the restroom here.

The staff was absolutely amazing here along with Sxsw staff. I felt a heat stroke coming on from the sun and they gave me some water and two sodas. The chairs were very comfortable. I saw two great movies. I got comfortable chairs for the third showing. I got to thank the good guy for helping me. We were moved to the theater because there was a question and answer. The director 's question and answer was very good.

What a cute local theater!! The vibe is great - front the walk up the stairs, a view over the trees, and a welcoming lobby. The staff was so personable as well. We started with a few beers and queso while we waited for our movie to seat! All was great and ordered a popcorn to enjoy during the film (very good - not too buttery like some). I'd be interested to try the first row as looked like some comfy seats. My only complaint is a few chairs looked like they could use some TLC - but overall can't wait to come again!

The Violet Crown Cinema tends to get overlooked, as it's tucked away on the strip of West 2nd. This theater has a few screening rooms and offers limited seating, which makes you feel more exclusive and makes the experience feel more personable. Parking - street parking is available, but why stress about parking, when you can park in a garage and get your parking ticket validated (AKA FREE).

I love Violet Crown, it is cozy and smaller and feels very "austin". Thankfully I can walk here from my apartment but I have always loved a classic movie theater vibe and this one hits all the boxes. Their food is really good, I love the popcorn and their servers are quick, kind and attentive.

Mold

Terrible service and terrible mold. Huge safety hazard. This place should be shut down because of this. This is ridiculous

2nd time here. Great place to see a movie. Free parking in parking garage attached--4 hrs. Mostly foreign films or directors, which is nice. Great drinks and menu. I go out of my way now to find a movie here. Front row has ottomons for the seats--pretty rad. 5 stars.

The Violet Crown Cinema is a really cool place to experience films. It is in the heart of Second Street District where before or after the movie you can walk around checking out boutique shops and local eateries. There are a few parking garages nearby where one provides free parking for four hours and can enter on San Antonio Street between 2nd & 3rd Streets. I parked at Austin City Hall garage. We arrived early to our show so we could enjoy lunch at their cafe/bar. The place supports local businesses with food and drink choices. I ordered Grilled Cheese and a local draft beer. There is plenty of seating and even though can take your food with you in the cinema. The lobby bar is a great place to hang out. This is an artsy move theater where today we were seeing '1917'. The theaters are reasonably small but has great comfy chairs that recline. The sound and video are top notch. Once this virus outbreak dissipates will once again return.

Sister Sara cocktail was delicious. They add blackberries to top it.

Ask the Community - Violet Crown Austin

Do the seats recline here?

Thank you for reaching out with your question. The front row, row A, in every auditorium has recliner chairs with ottomans for your feet. Every other row has rocker chairs in place.

The lobby is also a nice place to hang out before or after your movie with a full bar, a pool table, and plenty of family games to play. By the time I found my seat, the lights went out right as I settled in. From there, it was much harder than it needed to be to just order a cup of coffee. Three stars is for the design. I could not use my phone to scan the QR code to order the coffee because it was dark. I pressed the button and waited forever for someone to come and take my order. Then my friend arrived and went through the exact same thing. Even when I did finally get a menu on my phone, it was overcomplicated to order. Seems like something that should be easy by now. Considering the number of other theaters that do in seat ordering. I'd go back and perhaps have a better time now that I know the lay the land.

Booked tickets two days in advance and the theater was empty with only a few other viewers. This place was a bit out of the way/hidden so using GPS is a must as I wouldn't have seen it. The theatre was exactly how I remembered it to be. Galaxy is in a funky location...in a small strip mall west of IH35 near Burlington Coat Factory. So many drinks-beer, cocktails, shakes, teas, sodas... Once in the theatre, seat service if available for everything on the menu (same as cafe). Service was really good. Picture and sound quality-spectacular. I'd give it five stars but can't because of the seating. Though it's super comfy and luxury, a lot of the reclining chairs had wear and tear. Experiences like this make me appreciate Alamo Drafthouse a lot more.

Not only do they have good food and "bottomless" popcorn bowls, they also sponsor fun preview events to their special Victory fan club members, of which I am one. Last night they previewed the movie "Power Ballad," an excellent film starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. Often they have special guests to introduce the movie and offer fun contests. At the Power Ballad preview, they awarded a guitar to the first person to jump up and name the director (John Carney). I didn't win. The theater is definitely geared to film buffs and not the normal blockbuster movie goer, with posters from current and classic films decorating the walls. They even have the scary twins from "The Shining" in one of the hallways. You won't see that at any multiplex movie theater!

You can order food and drinks via a QR code at your seat, which is a nice perk. I chose our seats and in retrospect, I should have selected seats in a higher row. The auditorium did not have a steep incline as I anticipated, however, the seats were fine. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of the communal bathrooms, which is the design at the Alamo Drafthouse. The good news is that you have a urinal or restroom option with associated signage. Like all movie theatres, the food and drinks are overpriced. In addition, you have pay a 18% service charge along with a tip. I ordered bottomless popcorn and unsweet tea and paid over $20. Interestingly, the popcorn came in a metal bowl...perhaps a sustainability measure. The popcorn was fresh and buttery. Now for the best part...we went to see the Devil Wear Prada 2. I have had some really amazing experiences here coming to movie screenings over the years. You can order the tickets on the Alamo app but they charge a service fee that was nearly $7 for 3 tickets. So I waited until I got to the theater to purchase the tickets for our group. We went on Tuesday for $7 movie tickets. When someone in our party inadvertently bought an extra ticket, the staff quickly refunded my purchase and transferred the seat. The customer service here is great! The theaters are all upstairs and they have reclining seats. The seats do not recline back as far as I would like, but they are comfortable. We got to pick out our seats when purchasing the tickets. The new phone-based ordering system really takes away from the experience. One of the things that made Alamo special was the easy, low-disruption way of ordering during the movie. Now, having to use your phone feels distracting and honestly a bit inconvenient especially in a dark theater where you're trying to stay immersed in the film. On top of that, the added 18% service charge feels excessive, especially since the level of service has shifted more onto the customer with the new system. It doesn't quite add up. To make matters worse, the food prices have noticeably gone up. I don't mind paying for quality, but with the higher prices, added fees, and a less seamless experience, it just doesn't feel like the same value anymore. I spent nearly $40 for a Parmesan herb popcorn and a watermelon mezcal margarita. That is dinner pricing for movie concessions. I really hope they reconsider some of these changes, because this used to be one of my go-to theaters in Austin. Now I feel like I am being nicked and dimed for every little thing. If you don't close out your bill within 20 minutes, they auto close your tab and add 5% tip on top of the 18% service charge. This is really getting ridiculous and pricing people out.
