Lovely outdoor ambiance on a warm early Winter evening. Just right portion of perfectly cooked mini-gnocchi (gnocchetti?) at a fair price. It is a small plate but plenty for a light dinner. Free bread still exists here, served with oil and vinegar. Wine was great too. They serve by the glass but you can also do a 2 ounce taste. Server was kind and mostly attentive. read more

This little gem is located in Bernal Heights. This neighborhood is full of some many wonderful restaurants and small cozy bars. I have only been here for wine and cheese and have dined in. I really want to come back because the staff has been nothing but wonderful and the food last time had the most wonderful aroma. We had two full bottles, one was a a Rosé and one was a distilled one. Any cheese charcuterie board you do is amazing. They always add extra bread and that is a plus just ask for more. Great spot for wine, antipasto and charcuterie. Had their entrees and pastas years ago which I remember being solid, but haven't tried them recently. Wine selection is excellent and reasonably priced. The server gave us a few great suggestions. It has a charming parklet which is lovely on a warmer evening or a happy-hour glass of wine. My last experience here killed all desire to spend any money at this place despite living just a couple blocks away. a desperate moment of hunger and a sudden urge to give this place another chance after 3 years. I had nearly forgotten the previous experience...clearly he had been harboring hatred all along. an honest review left an impression on this guy so deep that he's been waiting for the day he could finally retaliate. He was practically shaking when he saw me. when I tried to ask to be seated...he told my friend and I that I was 86'd for a lifetime because he felt I was abominable (kinda like the snowman?) the last time around. Hey Noah...get a clue...there are a ton of other restaurants here on Bernal and in the Mission that wouldn't mind taking my money. I am shocked that after these many years, my experience of you and the honest review I gave, continues to haunt you till this day. I'm glad my words were heard. Wish you had fixed the attitude instead. I feel sad for you...that you've been holding on to these emotions for so long. It makes me wonder what must be going through your head every time you see me walking by. This server must be related to the owner because despite many terrible reviews about his attitude, he continues to work there. If you're more in the mood for a real meal, they also have great dishes and tapas to share. The pastas are particularly good. UPDATE: I recently had a baby and was excited to learn about Vino Rosso's "Wine & Whiner Wednesday" baby friendly happy hour! I went yesterday and had a great time. It was lovely to meet other new parents, and the service was great. I posted about this happy hour on a new moms group on Facebook, and there's a lot of interest! I'm hoping to make this a weekly outing. ORIGINAL REVIEW We popped in for a drink and snack on a Monday night and loved this spot! Good food and wine, good service, and a lovely setting. I had a glass of the Balletto Chardonnay, which I liked, and my husband had a glass of the Carmignana, which he enjoyed. We shared a three salumi plate with bresaola, salami, and coppa - it was delicious! The service was friendly and reasonably fast. We loved the setting - it's cozy, classy, modern, and elegant. Humbleness is a virtue. Isn't it? Well...it should be, anyway. And, there's elegance in simplicity. That one is fact. VinoRosso is both humble & simple. Walking in, I was surprised. Surprised at how small it is. Surprised at how bare bones it is. It is warm & positive. It's also charming, from the white lights strewn on the trees out front, to the candles on the tables. I just wasn't aware of how positively rustic it is. I took this theme to the top by sitting at the tiny, private, table in the back "room." I'm using quotes w "room" because it isn't actually a room. It's actually a tiny space w a closet, that you have to walk through to get to an equally tiny hall that leads to the restroom. That description perhaps doesn't convey the best picture; I should have taken one. Let me just say, that if my life suddenly turned into a scene from The Godfather, or Goodfellas, or Donnie Brasco, in that I had to have a "meeting" over lunch or dinner, I would want to have that meeting here at this table. There's only room for 2. The whole thing feels so clandestine. The clean canvas aspect of the space is the perfect juxtaposition for the food that is served here. Any excitement you're not getting from the aesthetic is made up for in spades by the food that they prepare. The lasagna was outstanding. I mean...outstandingly outstanding. The sauce tasted like nonna's actually here stirring it herself, the pasta had just the right bite. And the pizzetta (meant for one) was basically perfect, they (husband & wife team, who were also the servers) nailed the crust. Everything was so authentic, & everything is made in house. Pastas, sauces, pizza dough, even the olive oil...everything. Panna Cotta is my favorite Italian dessert & a bar of measure (among others) that I use to decipher whether or not an Italian restaurant knows what it's doing. VinnoRosso, as tiny & almost painfully unassuming as it is, knows what it's doing. Wine tastings, & you can come in just to buy wine to take home. Great spot. 4 & 1/2 stars. read more

We walked into a bright dining room with high ceilings. Bottles of wine were proudly displayed on the walls. We were greeted promptly and seated in the mostly empty room. We redeemed the free Prosecco check-in offer--it is my favorite to date at a $8 value and a delicious way to start to our evening. The portions are tapas sized--perfect for a selection shared family style. We ordered prosciutto wrapped artichoke hearts with goat cheese--our favorite item on the menu. There was something synergistic about the smoky, salty, creamy tanginess that delighted the palette and enhanced the wine we quaffed. Next up were the Lasagne and Eggplant Parmagiana. The Lasagna noodles were al dente--awesome, but there was no ricotta cheese within, and the sauce was on the thin side. Eggplant parmagiana had an ooey gooey cheese cap. Good, but not our favorite. We were still a bit hungry, so we added an order of crab cakes. Full of real crab and served crispy crumbed outside and fluffy moist inside, they were delicious if a bit pricey. I 100% will not be coming back to this restaurant. I actually just went tonight and my server was the brother of the owner. After paying with card, he immediately asked if our plan was to give a tip in cash to which my friend responded yes. After he took the cash tip, he said "Please don't come back, for the amount the bill was, your tip is insulting." First of all, the tip was not small, however, my friend felt so bad that she gave him more cash, which we now regret because that was so rude, especially coming from the brother of the owner. If anyone deserved the tip, it should've been the cook who did all the work. I understand that servers rely on tips, however, this is no way to speak to your customers. If I could give this place 0 stars I would solely because of their customer service. read more

This space has been such a beautiful respite for me. I was looking for a place with wifi and wine and discovered this place this summer. The service is lovely and warm. I did a quick stopover my first time and enjoyed a glass of wine and took a delicious lasagna to go. This time, I was able to stay longer! I ordered a lovely glass of Pinot (which ended up with two glasses), and got two cheeses and a salumi with recommendations from one of the hosts. I got work done and joined an online workshop! I purchased a restaurant.com gift certificate because I wanted to check out a few new local spots and got the chance to visit this little spot. My friend Rosy and I went for an early dinner. We both love Green Castelvetrano Olives and ordered glasses of Persecco. Everything sounded great, but we went with two main courses instead of appetizers or salads to start. We both picked two items to split. The Involtini di pollo con prosciutto e mozzarella (stuffed chicken breast) was very good, a large dinner sized portion served with mixed greens with a light dressing. The Capesante alla griglia (scallops wrapped in pancetta w/ leek & shallot puree) was the BEST. So savory, the combination of the scallop's texture with the leek puree and the pancetta for flavor. This review was about our experience tonight especially with our waiter named Noah. We used to come to Vinorosso regularly with and without kids and this was our first time since the pandemic on a date night. The summation - this was the single worst experience we have had an a restaurant or bar in 12 years in San Francisco and I WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK TO VINOROSSO. We got seated. I asked about a few of the wines we were considering ordering. Noah told me the ones we were considering were tanic, acidic, horrible to drink, and left all customers angry. Weird comments on a wine they were serving... We ordered some others along with a 3 cheese platter. We received some old, stale, super dry poorly cut bread along with the cheese. My wife made a comment mentioning the dryness of the bread and this is where everything turned sour. Noah basically got into an argument with us for binging this up and the service got even worse from there. He kept bringing up the bread complaint the rest of the night arguing with us about why we said something as paying customers. He did bring a replacement that was much better. Vinorosso website mentions 10 PM closure as do the signs on the frontdoor. Noah started closing everything at 9PM. Without asking, he brought me a bill while I was just starting to drink a beer. Considering the horrendous service we had so far, I considered not even tipping but tipped a conventional 14-15% on 2 glasses of wine, a beer, and cheese with stale bread. 10 minutes later at 930PM and half my beer left, Noah says we have to leave and are being kicked out. I asked why and he said its because I only tipped 13%. Then he said his dad is sick so we had to leave so he could help him??? Are you kidding me???? WOW! What a horrendous experience from start to finish. We live in Bernal and are Cortland regulars. We will never be going back to Vinorosso again. While our experience is mostly reflective of the service we received today from Noah, if this is the way this place operates, I would encourage everyone to avoid this place like the plague until they learn even the most simple basics of customer service. DO NOT GO. My husband and I went for a rare date night from our 3 kids here on a Monday evening. We used to go here when they first opened and before the pandemic and remember the lovely and warm welcome we got from the owners who, like us, had small children. But tonight was terrible solely because of the server, who said his name is Noah. We ordered 2 glasses of wine and a 3-cheese plate. When we asked for wine recommendations, he talked crap about one of the wines which gave us pause and made us wonder why a server would say that a wine was so tanic that it made you angry when theyre selling the wine. Why say a wine is terrible if it's on the list? Then, the bread came out looking a bit awkward and he explained it away that it probably looks crumbly like that b/c he popped it in the oven. After a few trials with the cheese, it felt like the bread was a bit too crumbly and way too dry for the cheeses that we ordered, so I thought I'd casually mention it and ask for crackers instead. Well, that was a mistake. As soon as I mentioned it, Noah's face dropped and he looked visibly annoyed with me. His tone changed and he rolled his eyes and he said he'd bring some crackers and when he couldnt find them, he brought some bread that didn't go in the oven, which worked fine. But, when he brought it over, there was still a tone and I tried to overcompensate with saying it's ok and it's all good, thinking maybe he baked the bread himself and I offended him. But, I'm the customer--why am.I wrong for telling him the bread is falling apart and not holding this expensive cheese that we are paying for? He walked away saying, with an attitude, that he just wants people to have a good time and I said I'm having a great time and I'm sorry that I offended him so much about the bread. He said he wasn't offended and stomped away, with annoyance all over his face. It was all very confusing and I regretted saying anything about the bread b/c clearly it ruined the rest of the night for us. We finished our wine and since we still had over 45 mins before they closed at 10pm, we ordered a beer to share so we could enjoy the little time left of our date night. While still not finished with our beer or cheese, he asked abruptly, "you want anything else to drink?" We said no thank you and he came back holding the credit card machine and just spat out the total number to us--not even a sentence--just a number barked at us. We didn't ask for the bill and it would have been nice to see the charges. My husband paid the bill and when the tip screen came on, Noah suddenly started talking to me, still looking annoyed, about how he wasn't offended about the bread and I told him it was all good, still sensing his attitude and the awkwardness of this whole bread situation. Then we continued to drink our beer and at closer to 9:30pm, over thirty minutes before they closed, he came out from the back and yelled at us and said "ok it's time for you to go". WTF happened?! Our beer wasn't finished. Yes, the place was empty, but we are literally still drinking and it's not close to closing time. My husband, confused, asked "Are you kicking us out?" And Noah said "Yes, I am. It's time for you to leave" and then he went on a rant about the tip!!!!!! He was pissed about the tip we left and came back and KICKED US OUT b/c of it. WTF!!!! He went on a rant about how we're taking too long when the place is closed (it wasn't). So, literally, we paid the bill and he went to the back, saw our bill, came back out and yelled at us and kicked us out. We asked him his name at that point, and he was growing angrier and told us it's Noah and then we told him how this is ridiculous that we're not done with our beer and he's kicking us out before they close and he said that it was ridiculous that we were not tipping him highly. We were SHOCKED. He challenged us with an angry voice to talk to the owners. From the beginning, this server was off. It was such a confusing evening. We were disrespected by this server. We most definitely will NEVER return here and will make sure that our large community of Bernal friends and family know how poor customer service truly is. I'm speechless. If you dig into Yelp reviews, this isn't the first time it's been mentioned. Why is he still employed? Why hasn't there been any action taken from the owners? I emailed and left a voicemail too. We have been there countless times since they opened, and have always enjoyed the service, ambience, small plates, and wonderful selection of wine. We particularly appreciate the knowledgeable, kind and honest advice of the severs when we are making a wine selection. We have often changed our first choice based on their feedback. Stopped in on a whim. Ambience is pretty good. Prices for the portion size definitely not worth it. $15 for a small personal size pizza -- the size of what you'd get from the personal pies in the grocery store frozen section. Lasagna was also $15 and about 6 big bites. For a wine bar, would have also expected nice stemware but wine was served in pretty thick glasses. Overall overpriced and just okay. Would not come back for any food. Perhaps would come back for a glass of wine while waiting to eat nearby. read more
