Sip, sip, sip it up! I just LOVE sippin' on some wine, especially really good wine. Talk about a hidden gem! This wine bar is hidden from plain view and tucked away in the Excelsior/Outer Mission. Some friends and I discovered this little gem while looking for a place to have a nightcap. Sippin' Wine Bar is located on the second floor of the Bottoms Up Bar, but the vibe is totally different. Not sure if the two bars are actually affiliated, but they are like night and day. The stairs leading up to the bar are lit up and the interior of the bar is just absolutely gorgeous! It's spacious and low lit with an extremely sexy ambience. The decor is just out of this world! They have the cutest tables and sofas. The lamps and artwork are very unique but visually appealing, and the tables are set with candles that create a very sensual vibe. There's a small but adorable little patio where you can relax and get some air. The interior designer deserves a pat on the back AND a few glasses of wine (wink wink). Speaking of wine, they have tons and tons of it! Their selection is extensive and they make it really obvious with all of their lovely wine bottles that are on display. I really enjoyed their Angeline Pinot Noir as well as the Kungfu Girl Riesling. They serve food here as well. We had just come from dinner, but a few of us who shall remain nameless (cough cough) were still hangry and ordered garlic noodles, garlic fries, and tater tots. Yep, somebody's breath was stankin' but it wasn't mine! Although I didn't try any of the food, It smelled wonderful. There was no food left behind, so I'm assuming that it was delicious! The owner Shirley was fantastic! She happily hosted our group and let us sample several different wines from her collection. She mingled with us as well and talked about the business. The bar is still relatively new and opened a little over 2 years ago, so she is still trying to generate more business. I'm hoping that more people will frequent this place because I really enjoyed it and would love to see it stick around. My group of three ended up here last Friday, March 3rd around 8pm. I had heard about this place from another friend not too long ago, so it was a funny coincidence that I ended up here. The place wasn't very busy, so we managed to grab three seats at the bar. *Hibiki Harmony ($15) *Yamazaki 12 yr ($17) I got the Hibiki Harmony while my girlfriend got the Yamazaki. I believe all the pours are priced for one ounce, but I felt like our pours may have been a little more. I love Japanese whiskey so we also ended up with two pours of Akashi. I never had this whiskey before, so it was fun tasting something new. My third friend (our DD) wasn't drinking, so he just ordered two Tonics ($3 each). The space is beautiful. All wood and glass. I believe they have two private rooms in the back as well. And there's a beautiful wine display / case as one of the walls. I can see myself coming here and enjoying some wine or whiskey while trying some of their snacks. This bar has the nice laid back and chill atmosphere I tend to gravitate towards. 2 bars in one venue... smoky down home sports bar below called Bottoms Up. Chic, modern wine bar up top called Sippin'. Eli exemplified service. He was eager to please, affable and recommended amazing wines and whiskey. He explained that the happy hour wines are open bottles which can be quite exceptional. The cabernet sauvignon had structured tannins offset by lush rich dark fruit. The pinot noir was velvety and also gushing with cherry and dark berries. A grest deal for $5 a pour. But it was the armanac like Yamazaki 12--a Japanese whiskey I've longed to taste since it became infamous, that captivated me. Seductively smooth with sultana like sweet fruit and scintillating nose... it was a treat. The meat and cheese board was Parma ham (?), salami, aged white cheddar and baguette for $5. Sip Wine Bar is awesome. Located upstairs of Bottoms Up. Brought here by my friends who claim their soju is bomb. I have to admit, the soju is bomb.com. I don't drink, but when I do, it has to be sweet. Hence soju being one of the only alcohol related drinks I will actually drink. I tried the Lychee and Watermelon soju. 1 1000ml pitcher is $20. Not bad IMO and it comes in these cute shot glasses. Of the two, the watermelon was my favorite. It is blended with ice and you really couldn't taste the alcohol. It was like a slushie. Tasted fresh and smooth. Definitely gives Tonight Soju Bar some competition. The lychee was pretty good too but this one I could still taste a hint of alcohol. It doesn't have as much ice as the watermelon. Of the two, lychee was my least favorite but they're both good. Dim place and really classy. There are 2 REAL fireplaces, glass dividers (tho idk if that's a good idea for drunk people), clean bathrooms located in the back, a balcony, comfortable couch areas, tables made from wine crates, etc. Cleanliness level pretty much 100/100. You would have never expected something so nice. It makes you feel good about being here. It's not super loud either so you can have a nice conversation with friends. Service is wonderful. The waiter and waitress came to check in on us from time to time. The owner, Shirley, is such a delight. She's very friendly and super nice. She would make sure you're comfortable and have everything you need from more drinks to water. She also speaks Chinese if anyone is wondering. If you ordered wine, she would give a small background to the wine you're about to drink. Sip Wine Bar is simply amazing. My girlfriend and I were in SF when it started POURING rain. It was windy and dumping cats and dogs. We had to drive back to the South Bay, but decided to take shelter here. We walked up the stairs and entered a bar that kinda seemed like something out of an asian gang film. It was very trendy and intimidating in the beginning. However, once the bartender came around, he really lightened the tone and made it feel welcoming. It is low lit, and has low booths all around. They have quite a selection of wines, and a few beers bottled and on tap. She went for the wine, I stuck with my beers. They have Duvel on tap which was a nice plus. They also let her taste a few wines before making a choice on what she wanted to drink. We also had some small bites. I picked the calamari and she picked the garlic fries. Both of which were very tasty for bar food. The prices for the beers and wines didn't break the bank and were very reasonably priced. Overall: If I find myself in the Mission and have a hankering for a beer and some bar bites, this is a good place to stop by. read more

Who says you can't discover hidden gems by accident? Sippin' Wine Bar is the epitome of a hidden gem. Opened for only two years in San Francisco's Excelsior District by personable owner Shirley, Sippin' has a lot going for it including a sleek and sexy interior with multiple areas for parties both big and small to sit and relax as well as an incomparable in-depth wine list which would take multiple return trips to parse through. We came on a rare very warm Friday evening as me and my fellow dining companions finished our dinner at a nearby restaurant on Mission Street and we were all still aching to let the good times roll for a little while longer and a simple Yelp search on our phone for wine bars on Mission Street yielded Sippin', and after looking at the reviews and the pictures from our fellow Yelpers we were all sold. After a quick jaunt up Mission Street we were already there at the foot of Bottoms Up Sports Bar on the first level and then a walk up a lit flight of stairs you'll find Sippin'. Since it was so hot even after 9pm, there was not a single customer in sight so our group of eight had the entire floor to ourselves. Owner Shirley treated our group like VIPs making sure we all had their multitude of menus, including their food menu from the restaurant downstairs, their wine flight menu, their liquor menu, and their wine menu by glass or by bottle. Some of us mentioned we liked wines on the sweeter side and Shirley insisted we try both a Riesling she recommended called Kung Fu Girl which was from Washington state and had flavors of apricot, kumquat, nectarine and lime leaves. At forty dollars for a bottle split between five in our party it was at a solid price point and the taste had a mild intensity with a long drier finish. I personally am a Moscoto fan and Shirley insisted I try the Smoking Loon Moscato which had the both the aroma and flavor of honeysuckle, peaches and mandarin oranges. A glass was only $8.50 and tasted like honey. Everyone in our party ordered what they wanted from 17 year old Japanese whiskey to a nice glass of Cabernet to a Prosecco by the small bottle. Some in our party even felt in the mood to order food to go with their glasses of bubbly, so we went with the garlic noodles ($8) which were sauteed in a roasted garlic and butter sauce, topped with chopped pine nuts and the truffle tater tots and fries ($9) which were drizzles in truffle oil topped with Parmesan cheese. The tater tots were a fun spin on the traditional family side dish and I would consider ordering them a second time. The menu had a lot of options I'd consider getting the next time I go to Sippin'. In fact there's a lot to try when it comes to Sippin', Shirley has a great wine program going on with a cast amount of inventory and knowledge that could wet your pallet no matter with kind of wine floats your boat. It's not located in the best neighborhood in San Francisco, but the fact that it's not overrun with San Francisco techies makes it all the most unique. Shirley is proud of her burgeoning establishment, as she should be, they host parties and events, she just needs to get a website going with an updated list of all the wines and liquor they serve, soon Sippin' Wine Bar won't be a hidden gem much longer. read more

In all good conscience, I cannot give this place 5 stars, and there's no option for 3.5 stars so I'm opting for 3 stars, not 4 stars since their wine selection is closer to 2 stars.... let me explain. Decor is really amazing. It's a combination of posh, tranquil, and hip. The service is great too: friendly, expeditious and professional. But what kills me is their wine. Comparative to their decor and service, they have the worst wine selections. If you know wine, you'd be gravely disappointed, and would give 1 star. Most wines featured on their menu are $8-15 at Safeway or retail. The mark up is crazy. I ordered a bottle of Zin which retails for $8.99, and paid $60 there. And every wine is overwhelmingly distasteful. Like who selects these wines. I can think of a dozen $10 wines that'll triumph over any of their cheap overpriced wines. Honestly, WHERE THE HELL DID THIS PLACE COME FROM!? We all know and love bottoms up, but SIP has just upped the ante and raised the bar. (no, really. the bar is upstairs) From the outside it's easy to pass you'd never even know it's there (you're welcome!). once you hit those beautiful wood stairs, you know shit is about to get really real. Once you enter the main room, you're transported from the grimy outer mission to a swanky FiDi bar minus the bad fitting suits. The main room is large, airy and modern. Great for groups, dates or just a nice night to chill and catch up. What really stuck out is the extensive wine/food menu. The wine covers all types and regions from flights to bottles. A short draft beer list but all quality rotating craft beers (think: drakes IPA, etc.). The food menu is well thought out sharable plates from port belly, truffle tater tots, etc. (now that I think about it, I should've taken a photo of the food menu since nobody else has). All plates are under $10 each and the portions are large, so although it has a classy, modern feel....you don't pay those ridic SF prices for quality food. Ive only had the pork belly and it was enough for two and packed with flavor. A notable mention is their happy hour: $3 wines, $3 sangria, $4 draught beers UNTIL 8PM. Yes, happy hour is until 8PM. Happy night anyone? Service is super friendly and fast, they definitely make you feel at home. SIP is an absolute gem and an asset to the outer mission where grimy dives tend to be on every block. There's a small balcony that overlooks Mission St, although I don't think customers are allowed on it. There's also a seating area that has a huge window above it so that you get a lot of natural light. Don't want that? You have more soft benches and chairs to sit on. There's of course bar seating too. I really love the decor & ambiance of this place. It sets the tone for a relaxing catch up session with friends. Although it's trendy, you don't have to be too spendy here as they have a variety of wines at many different prices. You can get a glass of wine for about $10 or many bottles go for about $35-$40. There's more expensive ones if you feel like it. It's also great that the wines are both local from Sonoma county and foreign from places like Spain. Plenty of variety to please everyone! This is my new secret spot; hidden between taquerias and on top of a sports bar.....it wont be a secret much longer. Shirley, the owner, is like a really cool older sister you want to hang out with ALL the time. She is probably 70% of why i loved this place. 30% the wine..ok, maybe more. Anyway, Shirley was like BFFs with anyone who walked into her bar. Not only did she teach me about certain wines, but she offered me all her favorite ones, which I really liked too! Then we jammed to some Justin Bieber which completed my night. Usually, they have classy foreign music that suits the wine environment, but someone switched it out because Shirley loves JB. Shirley also made sure that I had enough water before I left her bar. That deserves extra stars. Drinking wine here is like drinking in the comfort of my own home. Everyone was so friendly like we've known each other for years. This place has a comfortable yet very chic decor, very beautiful. Been here once on a date night and the vibe was cute; fast forward 2 years later this venue popped in my head while I planned my husbands 40th birthday party. Shirley the owner, was really nice and easy going when it came to reserving the date for the party. First meeting she asked that I bring $500 for the deposit on the date/ venue. She had me pick a door password as she was going to have security at the door; which day of the party- there was NO security provided. She asked that if she were to cater sliced baguettes and cold cuts she would not charge an extra 20% service fee. Which did not look appetizing. If we decided to bring outside food and cake she would charge 20% for each invoice provided. Our party started at 6pm, Shirley could only open the doors at 4pm so my family and I were rushing to set up decorations. The nagging started as she kept asking questions about where the food was from and not moving weird decor she had up. I then provided her an invoice of $250 for food catered and she was not happy about what I spent on food so she charged me $500 for her "service fee" which she provided NO service for. All throughout the night she kept flagging me down about turning down the music and one of her bathrooms being clogged. In the mist of entertaining family and friends, she then said she would have to call a plumber and that it would be at my expense. She had one of her bartenders pull out the generic contract I signed at the beginning of this reservation and said that any damages would be at the renters fault. But clogged toilets happen in a business - and the toilet was faulty already when we arrived to the venue. Luckily, I have great friends that helped unclog her mess. All in all, the minimum to rent out the bar upstairs was $2k. But DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE HEADACHE of being chased around the whole fucking night and blamed for toilet issues and the up charge of the $500 of some made up number for service fee even though an invoice was provided! Just avoid this place if you're looking to throw a party. It's already stressful enough and she literally did not stop nagging; I couldn't even hold a conversation with anyone because she was always there asking or complaining about something. read more

I visited Sippin' Wine Bar on a Friday evening. We arrived shortly before opening at 6pm. Apparently the bar downstairs has the same ownership as Sippin', so a very kind employee there invited us in to sit and wait until Sippin' opened. The neighborhood/street where this wine bar is located is fairly grungy. So I had pretty low expectations. However, when we walked up the stylishly lit staircase, I was pleasantly greeted by a small, cozy, yet modern and classy wine bar. The bar itself is lined with cushiony bar seats. Then off to the right are some tables that feel a little more private, especially because of the dim lighting. Then straight ahead towards the back is a open seating area with small tables, a larger central table and fancy fireplace. This area is particularly well lit because of a skylight overhead. The walls are lined with wine bottles behind glass. Overall, great vibe! The customer service was really great as well. We had a couple of ladies helping us. One seemed to be a manager (?) and the other was the waitress. Both were very attentive and sweet. I'm not a huge fan of wine so I can't provide a thorough review of the menu, but from the looks of it, they had quite a selection. The waitress was able to offer recommendations as well. I had a glass of Reisling ($9). My friend had a glass of Trinity Oaks ($5). They had a good selection of bar food. We ordered the cheese-only plate ($10) which came with a small cut of three different kinds of cheese, all of which were delicious. We asked if they had any bread or crackers to go with the cheese and they came back with some sliced bread (baguette) and oil/balsamic vinaigrette ($5). The manager came by to ask that we follow them on instagram (@sippinsf) because they have live music and DJs now and then and wine tasting events too. Overall, I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area. And if you're feeling it's a little too classy for your taste, just pop on downstairs where the bar is a little more casual! read more

This place is a rare gem. I've never been to a wine bar, it definitely is different. The wine bar is upstairs from a regular bar (Bottoms up) and the atmosphere is totally different than the bar downstairs. When you walk upstairs you immediately see a whole different atmosphere, it isn't loud. The decor is modern. The patrons aren't crazy like downstairs. The private rooms are really spacious and modern as well. It's a more classy take on a regular bar. The staff is friendly and awesome. The location of the bar isn't bad too. It's not in the downtown area of SF, so you don't have to worry about all those crazies you typically see around the bars and lounges in downtown. Parking can be hard here but it's not impossible. I definitely recommend this place to anyone seeking a nice quiet place to meet the girls or friends for some catching up. read more

The venue size and decor, close to our home and I've known Shirley for over 10 years now. We stayed with a simple wedding ceremony. Our decorating was simple as well. Our attendees numbered around 65. We explained our budget and Shirley worked with us. Over a six month period we attended the various wine tastings to help choose our wine selection. . Sippin's regular liquor and wine selection is pretty good as well so quite a few options. They provided as well, salad, rosemary chicken and garlic toast. All quite tasty. Other chicken and beef options were available as well.if we had so chosen.Many of our guests complimented us on the rosemary chicken. We provided our own cake. Sippin's sound system can be plugged into so we provided our own music. Playlist on a mobile device and ran music for about 6 hours. Small dance floor but more than enough to have fun. I would recommend Sippin' for any event. Fun and friendly folk behind the bar and great booze selection. Fun for just two or a crowd. I just had an amazing time at Sip Wine Bar. I discovered it last week while looking for wine bars in the Excelsior District. I went with my boyfriend and was impressed by how elegant (yet simple) wooden decor adorns the place. The fireplace is very romantic. The owner Shirley is an amazing hostess, and almost makes you feel like she's an old friend you've come to visit! She let us try wines and beer to our taste until we decided what we liked. She nailed her selection of wine, based on the types of wines I like. They had an extensive wine and liquor list and a few small bites. When we went, it was already too late, so we didn't get to try the food, but we promised Shirley we would back with the whole family the day after to eat and drink. The following day, the experience tripled in joy and deliciousness. We tried several of the food items. I was blown away by the Crispy Pork Belly, both crispy at the edges and juicy in the middle, very well cooked. That was my favorite! We had the Happy Hour Sangria, then everyone settled on their beer and wine selections, recommended by Shirley. To close out the night, Shirley brought me some dessert wine to aid in digestion. She served me a entire flute of it, so much that I had to ask for an extra wineglass to share with someone else. Both her and the server on duty were extremely sociable and nice to my entire family. This hidden gem definitely earned all 5 of its stars. My boyfriend and I came just a few minutes after they opened, so it felt a little ghost town-y but you can tell it's the type of spot that livens up as the evening progresses. The bartenders, however, were as welcoming as if we were old friends they hadn't seen in years. I only caught the name of Talia, a young, vibrant woman whose spirit glowed as brightly as her smile. She was the epitome of hospitality, and every bar, restaurant, lounge, etc. needs an employee like her. We took full advantage of their happy hour, served from 6-8. We started with the sangria, which was deliciously chilled with strong hints of orange. He followed up with the Bogle Cabernet, which had a strong resemblance to a port, while maintaining a full bodied taste. I went with the Sutter Home White Zin, which wasn't my favorite, but for $5 I'm not complaining. The drink service was prompt and non-rushed. For food, the menu was somewhat limited but nothing we ordered left us disappointed. First to arrive were the truffle fries, which could've used just a drizzle more truffle oil but otherwise they were cooked to perfection. Next were the pork belly sliders. Wow!! is all I can say. Pork belly is not my favorite cut of meat by any means, but these sliders were packed with so much amazing BBQ flavor and the texture of the pork was perfect. Last to arrive was the tenderloin salad. The beef was smokey and tender (surprise!) on a bed of mixed greens with cherry tomatoes in a poppyseed vinaigrette. I would highly recommend this trendy lounge/ bar to pretty much everyone I know. I was having a great time for a private party at this place until I asked for water. The bartender said they could only sell me water and I said I just wanted regular water. He said I have to buy something to get water. I told him I had spent over one hundred dollars on drinks already. They never offered water with my drinks. He did not want to give me water so I asked to speak with manager and he said that the owner set the rules not the manager. I told him why should I have to spend more money to get water; I did not receive water with my previous drinks so he owed me water. I asked for three glasses of water but he only gave me two glasses of water; and they were small to boot. I told him we ordered about 8 drinks before, so the least he can do was give us the three drinks. He did not care and only gave me two drinks. This is the last time I will come to this place and I will certainly make it known how they treat people and their policies. Silly me, I was thinking of having an event there too. They lost a great customer and someone who definitely gets the word around. You can post all the pictures you want of San Francisco washed up politicians, you are a phony, dishonest place of business. And on another note, they added twenty percent tip on my bill. There were only five of us. I expect that on parties of six or seven or more. We spent a lot of money at this place which was not very gracious or customer service oriented. They are a business who only want to exploit the customer. Never again! read more

The hours.... that's the problem here.. that's why I am taking off the two stars ** I went there with a friend once... had a really nice glass of wine... the place was pretty empty but it got a little fuller as the night went by. I liked the space a lot and it was definitely refreshing to find a chic wine bar in the Excelsior... actually... kind of unheard of... hmm Last Sunday I took my fiancé there and I was really excited to show it to him... we walked 15 min from our house to discover that it was closed... bummer!!! Yesterday, Saturday, we walked there again. Got there around 7pm... It was shut tight... very confusing.. what wine bar closes on Saturday? After consulting my phone, we found out that on Saturday it opens at 8pm... It is open only 4 nights a week and it doesn't open on Saturday till 8pm? It seems quite limiting.... I guess we should have consulted their schedule before venturing there... and avoided the disappointment...I know that they have just opened and are not very busy but still... I assume that they are trying to attract a clientele...it won't happen if they keep such a limiting schedule... I am ready to make it my favorite neighborhood bar... but it has to give me a chance :( For now, we ended up at Pissed off Pete's ... just a little pissed off... ;) read more

This place is a gem. Was so surprised to see it in Excelsior neighborhood. The place was opened around 4 month ago, hence not very popular yet but I'm sure it will be! Stunning interior, cozy fireplaces, very modern, friendly customer service! They serve delicious food as well. Was a little bit chilly inside, but still very intimate atmosphere. This place is super cute! The ambiance is chill, the owner is sweet, the service is great, and the wine selection is on point! The only thing I would add is more events with live music...especially since the summer is coming. Last night there was supposed to be R&B & Reggae, but there was some country type band there instead. While the wine bar attempts to make itself classy by the nice decor, we didn't find it to be a nice experience. The location is inadequate and surrounded by homeless and poor smells. The service, while friendly, was slow despite being one of three tables. They only have wine by the bottle and not by glass. We finally settled on the cheapest Malbec that was listed for $45 to only find out it typically sells at the store for $9!!!! I would understand if they sold it for $20/25 but $45 is ridiculous. Great to see an upstairs wine bar move into the Mission Terrace / Excelsior neighborhood. Shirley was a great host and has done a great job building this new bar. Some very tasteful interior design. Her and the bartender Kyle were very attentive. Great mixed crowd for the Sunday afternoon special event wine tasting. Very encouraging and fun addition to this part of San Francisco!
