The team is always super attentive to his needs, no matter what's going on. They've helped us through everything from eye cuts to dental chips, and when Yoshi needed a root canal, they guided us and referred us to a great specialist. They're also amazing with communication. Whenever I need an appointment or records, they text and email back immediately, which makes everything so easy and stress-free. We use their wellness membership too, which includes monthly nail trims, anal glands, and ear cleanings for $90, plus on-call vet support if we ever need it. After trying out a couple vets in Cobble HIll/Brooklyn Heights, I found Vinegar Hill to be the champion in the area. Until today. I took my dog to an exam on 09/07/2022. Three months later, on 12/12 I took him back for a vaccine. Pay attention to this part because it's important: had I NOT asked the price they would have charged me for the vaccine AND $110 for another exam, which he obviously didn't need. I politely said: "I only need the vaccine." And that was that. Cut to June 2023. I made an appointment for a vaccine. Not a consultation, a vaccine (see picture!) I even wrote on the notes VACCINE ONLY, to avoid what happened in the last visit. After all, it's been LESS THAN A YEAR since his exam . I got a text confirming the appointment and asking me to fill out a form. I replied saying I had already filled out the form and, once again, stressed that I was taking him for VACCINE ONLY. But when I got there, they wanted to charge me for an exam. When I said I didn't want it, they REFUSED to vaccinate my dog. I was dumbfounded. The receptionist, extremely kind as always, told me it was their policy (which, by the way, was NEVER mentioned to me.) I got angry. Please understand, I wasn't pissed-and-yelling-angry. That's not my style. Just indignant-New-York-angry whenever people are trying to charge you for something you didn't ask. I asked the vet if he agreed with the policy and he said he did. But when I asked him what exactly was the policy... "Six months?" He DIDN'T KNOW the answer (even though he agreed.) I kindly said that I would try to get a vaccine elsewhere. For real. I was kind. I even asked them for a referral, which they gave me! Then, I asked if I could have my deposit back. And that's when the practice owner comes out: she doesn't even talk to me, she barely looks at me, and says: "We will keep your deposit and you go take your dog somewhere else." I was flabbergasted. First off, I tried to de-escalate the situation. I volunteer teaching children with learning disabilities, so I know a thing or two about de-escalation. I explained to her that this was news to me and that I wasn't prepared to pay $110 for an exam now. I was indeed planning to bring for the exam in September, but now I couldn't afford these extra $110 since I'm unemployed I'm on a budget. "I'm not interested in my personal story," she said. And then she threatened to deny me service. This is the part where I SCREAM from the top of my lungs, angry at someone who was clearly using her power... No, I didn't do that. Like I said, it's not my style. Also, leaving would just be more costly for me. May I remind you she refused to give me back my deposit. So I took a deep breath, succumbed to her and decided to pay for the whole thing. And this is where it gets worse. Because I don't deal well with negativity, I tried to bury the hatchet before leaving. I tried to explain to her that their policy wasn't clear. I tried showing her my phone with the text saying that I only wanted the vaccine. I even tried to apologize saying "I'm sorry if I upset you..." But I couldn't finish the sentence because she turned her back and walked away. As I'm writing this review, I'm still puzzled about what happened. I could imagine she was having a really bad day because something awful happened to a loved one. I could imagine that this privileged, rich straight white woman just couldn't stomach a queer Latin immigrant telling her about his financial reality. I could imagine she thought she was right even though I communicated many times I didn't want an exam AND didn't know about the policy. I could imagine many things, but I guess I'll never know. The only thing I can do is hope. Hope that this person grows from her actions and doesn't do this to another person like me. It's not the first time that a straight white woman uses her privilege to belittle a queer Latin immigrant and it most certainly won't be the last. If you want a place that prioritizes your pets over money, then please look elsewhere. This is not the place. The doctor spent 3 minutes with me out of the 120 minutes I was there and charged me $300 in additional charges. Prior to my appointment, I called to ask how much it would cost for my dog to be certified to travel internationally. The receptionist said it would be $220 for the two appointments and would not include any additional charges. They initially told me that they would charge me $110 per appointment, but I got slapped with an extra $300 only after the second appointment. Imagine calling a business to inquire about costs and receiving a figure that's only 40% of the total. Not even after the first appointment did they send me an estimate or mention the additional $300 fee. This business is super efficient at collecting their money, way more than any other vet I've been to, but they lack transparency and integrity. They send you texts with links so you pay in advance for all appointments or deposits. When I disputed this surprise $300 fee, I only asked for them to refund one of the appointments ($110). I would still give them the $110 for the first appointment and the $300 for the USDA, but they still refused. They wouldn't even budge for $100 dollars despite their lack of clarity throughout the whole process. And this is the part that broke my heart. They told me they would not be moving forward with the certification because they didnt feel "comfortable" -- effectively stranding my dog for three months without me. I asked the manager how she felt working for bosses that were this callous about putting a dog on the line for 3 months because they couldn't even recognize $100 (I wasn't even asking for $300). I asked her if she felt this was unethical and how she felt working with people like that. She was shaking, and I could tell she wasn't happy there. It was clear she was just in a tough position of being the messenger. What kind of veterinarian office tells you that you need to pay this surprise $300 fee because there is no option to go to another vet anymore? An exploitative one. The vet had already witnessed my dog taking his anti tick medicine, so I couldn't go to another vet and repeat that. If I didn't pay the fee, I would effectively be forced to leave my dog in NYC while I would need to be on another continent for 3 months. I had no choice but to sign the waiver they presented, stating that I would not dispute the bill. I repeat: If you want to go to a place that cares about your pets and not about money, don't go to Vinegar Hill. The doctor spent 3 minutes with me out of the 120 minutes I was there (yes two hours, the first with lots of waiting and the second with back and forth between the manager and me as she went to compare notes withe her bosses). I have to say I'm so shocked at the negative reviews, I'm so sorry to all who have had a negative experience here! That has not been the case for me and my dog. My dog has been seen by the entire team of doctors at some point (not at the same time, obviously). I especially cherish the care of Dr. Austin Stein and Dr. McGettigan, as they helped us navigate the care needed for Pippin's pneumonia and ear infections. When I got my Pippin, he was two months old and was sold to me with a raging pneomonia case (they did not inform me of that). After hospitalization at Long Island Veterinary Specialists, I followed up for his care here at VH. I was a nervous wreck as this was my first dog ever and I wanted him to be well. I had to walk the line of advocating for his needs and trusting professionals to guide me and help him. The team was sensitive to my anxieties and Pippin's needs. I felt heard and I felt they truly were looking out for my dog. As money was an issue for me, I asked that they consult with me prior to administering medication or certain services. They respected that and worked with me to minimize the bill and still get Pippin what he needed. That right there was one of the things that won me over. When Pippin got an ear infection, the doctor respectfully talked some sense into me when I was hesitant to get him a medicine that would ease his discomfort. When Pippin was neutered, the vet team was respectful of my request to consider the possibility of him having the MDR-1 gene when administering the anesthesia or prescribing medicines for pain afterwards. They also did the blood work per my request and were just as elated as I was when he tested negative for it! I highly recommend this vet group based on my experience over these last years. They try to monetize everything - even follow-up questions to existing issues we have paid to have care for. Recently we used the chat service and only after they charged us the fee did they tell us they couldn't provide the care we requested through chat. About a year ago my rabbit scratched his cornea with a piece of hay. It got bad really fast so I raced to find a "rabbit savvy vet" nearby. They are NOT. Although they adamantly claim they can properly care for rabbits. Sara Neuman had absolutely no idea what to say or do regarding my rabbits eye (which was horribly inflamed at the time). Prescribed Ciprofloxacin and said she thought it might help but that I should seek out medical advice from a SPECIALIST. The vet actually admitted she had no idea or way of understanding what could me wrong. My jaw was on the ground. They also had the audacity to charge me money for the visit. I was so distraught and angry I didn't even fight it and paid. For your rabbits---- If you are able to please go to CATNIP AND CARROTS IN New Hyde Park. They are excellent and absolute pros. Knowledgeable and responsible. I went to them right after this horrible experience and with their expertise I saved my rabbits eye. TDLR: these people are absolute frauds when it comes to being rabbit savvy and are only interested in making a profit. I had to ask how much the charge was and for me it was $110.00. They also don't share with you that the same day appointment "deposit" is not refundable. I had to ask AFTER they took my money. When I got a call back from the doctor, I complained about the practice. I was told that since "I was not respectful by telling them how much to charge for a deposit" they cancelled my appointment, knowing that it could mean the death of my pet. Unethical, Price Gouging, Predatory Vet After three years of constant difficulties with VH Vet Group, we're taking our pet to a different practice. From day one, we've had repeated issues with this vet overcharging us, "forgetting" to refund/apply appointment holds, and billing us for services that were not discussed or agreed to at any point. On one occasion, when we brought our pet in for stomach trouble, the vet (Dr. Nueman) explicitly told us that they would NOT conduct a stool sample, as it would not provide any useful information. After receiving the bill, I noticed that we were charged well over $100 for a stool sample and a cortisone shot, neither of which were discussed during our 20 minute appointment. I had to call and fight with the staff, who said that the doctor "collected" a stool sample while our pet was being seen and administered a cortisone shot to our pet without checking. This not only completely contradicted what our doctor told us, but we also did not receive results from said stool sample. This is one of multiple instances of us being overcharged and taken advantage of. On that same visit, the doctor recommended an antibiotic as a "just in case" treatment for a stomach bug. I explicitly asked if there were any side effects. I was told that there were none. We gave our pet the medicine and she became violently ill for several days. Upon Googling the medicine, I saw that stomach upset and vomiting is a confirmed and common side effect of the medication, something our vet failed to share with us when asked. This medicine was totally precautionary, and we wouldn't have given it to our pet if our vet had given us the correct information when we asked. Upon politely providing feedback on this visit over email, I received no response. Most recently, our pet has been due for a couple vaccinations, which did not need to be administered at the time of her last yearly check up in late January. However, they're insisting that we pay a $90 consultation/checkup fee in addition to the cost of the vaccines, due to a "twice a year check up policy" that has never been mentioned to us before and is not listed anywhere on their website. The policy has always been once a year. Our pet is completely healthy and has been seen by the vet 2 times in the past year, but we're being forced to shell over more money for an appointment fee just to get her vaccine updates. Unfortunately, I believe this vet puts their bottom line above ethics, and we've been taken advantage of one too many times. I recommend bringing your pet elsewhere. read more

However, they stopped "being able to" prescribe her medication (not related to the bad food) after a few months because I hadn't taken her in for a full check up during that time. I've been taking my dogs to Vinegar Hill for years now. Between three dogs, ranging in age over the years from tiny puppy to geriatric, we've seen every doctor in the practice and been to both offices. This is my favorite of all the veterinary clinics I've been to in my lifetime, and my family has always had dogs so I've known a *lot* of vets. Every veterinarian at Vinegar Hill has been knowledgeable, and patient with my (sometimes lengthy, nervous) questions. Sweet, gentle, and caring to my dogs. It's extraordinary to me, in fact, the high level combination of professionalism and kindness across the board, with this number of vets. Even seeing different vets at different times, the care still feels very personal. Vets are accessible, and have always called me back very timely when I've had a question. The vet techs have all been lovely without fail! The front desk staff, especially at the Columbia Place location (our usual) is warm and welcoming and extremely reassuring. Pricing is scrupulously transparent. They take time to explain estimates for procedures. I've never been jump-scared by a bill at the end of an appointment! Most recently, I took my dog there for a necessary tooth extraction and dental cleaning, which required full anesthesia. I was so nervous about having my tiny dog "put under," but the vet and staff at Vinegar Hill took such good care of Suki (and of me, the worried dog mom!) that my worrying was totally calmed. And now Suki is in fine fettle, less one deciduous tooth that refused to come out on its own, with sparkling white teeth and way better breath. I trust Vinegar Hill to take care of my most precious best friends; I'm so relieved to have this trustworthy, experienced practice to rely on! read more

We've used Vinegar Hill Vet for both our rescue cats over the past few years. They're always professional and caring. The office and waiting rooms are very clean. The reception staff is friendly and professional. And the vets really know their stuff! Our cat Mika had ringworm, but a vet we thought was doing a good job at the time insisted it was only cat acne, even after her hair started falling out. This vet used a lamp and confirmed it was ringworm right away. They were also great when Mika ate some rubber from a yoga mat while in the care of a cat sitter. I have been bringing my dogs to Vinegar Hill Vet Group for the past 10 years for routine care; I've continued using their services due to its convenient location and the fact that I am medically savvy enough to question certain charges/medical decision-making (I work in health care and treat/diagnose humans). VHVG is after your money. They overcharge and send unnecessary tests. It's the type of business that asks for your credit card first without telling you that they are charging you $600. I've questioned why they are sending certain tests when they have no relevance in the disease that they are working up (after which they remove it without an apology). I was told that my dog needed a liver biopsy to work-up my dog's Cushing's disease/elevated liver enzymes. I hate when patients ask me this, but I asked the vet what she would do if she were in my position. She said she favors the least invasive approaches first (which is what you should do with ALL patients, lol) and ended up deciding on pharmacologic management (which was successful). They've given subcutaneous fluids without my consent to a dog that was clearly not dehydrated. They recently gave my dog the flu shot without my consent...once it was given, the tech audibly said "s***" in front of me. They apologized, but didn't update her vaccine record since I have a hunch they are hiding the fact that this happened. Years ago, I brought my dog in to rule out a UTI (she had obvious symptoms). After being examined by one of the vets, they questioned why I would think that; they wanted me to watch her and bring her back in a couple of days (more $$$) if she didn't improve. When they found out my profession, their story changed (and of course a work-up followed resulting in a diagnosis of UTI). Today, they called me with results of stool studies for one of my dogs...yet she hasn't been to the clinic in awhile (it was another dog's results that got placed in her chart). They have made so many mistakes over the years that I would have lost my license if I treated humans this way. I think one of their major problems is their practice model; it seems, to me, that the same vet does not follow your dog's case along the way. If you see one vet, it may not be the same vet who is calling you with results and creating a plan. There's a total lack of continuity in care sometimes. Luckily, I'm savvy enough to correct these errors. My fear is for others who aren't so savvy. read more

I brought my cat in for a checkup, and I feel like she aged 5 years in the 15 minutes she spent with the doctor. My cat came home with a limp that hasn't cleared up in the months following. I have left messages that haven't been returned, I was told they'd look into a house visit for follow up care and never received a call. When I've called to tell them what was going on they seem to have no feelings whatsoever about it. I called to get her records so find out which leg they would have drawn blood from to see if that may have correlated to the limp and they don't even record it. You've done actual harm to my cat and shown no interest in helping me diagnose or treat what you caused. Don't go here, honestly you may regret it and be in a very difficult position with very little power to prove wrong doing even though you see it everyday when your cat can't put weight on her foot. read more

L some words of Dr. Neuman, an owner, included "...I will rip that contact lense out of that dog's eye...". Same contact lense she put in that made his eye bloodshot red anyway. and that was the least of it. Dr. Neuman threatened a huge animal rescue to discontinue her work with them if I post this review as I told Dr. Neuman in a whispered tone outside her establishment that she has left me with no other way to express myself than a yelp review. Which she replied to in a hormone raged teenage girl tone "well then I'll be writing one about you too!" (Proofs available) I was not going to post this. Until, recently, I had someone else call in for vet record of visit to avoid any more insanity. They gave it up actually without even asking the caller for their name or relationship to the dog. Upon reviewing it, the record had about three paragraphs reporting their internal drama. I called back asking to simplify the record so it can stick to only the medical history (none taken or asked about) and notes on diagnosis and treatment. ask to correct the name (asked for my name on phone, not a rescue I simply mentioned I work with, And the notes on intake were incorrect !!) so whoever answered goes oh it's you!!!! No!!!!! We are not correcting a thing !!!!! Again, you can not finish a sentence there. You will be stampeded. And I had to use this UNIQUE record as the animal was my main concern and waste time explaining some other vet's chaotic and malicious environment. More soon when I'm relieved by helping the currently 22 animals Ive rescued to a loving home. Please note, as an animal rescuer I've for sure been to over a hundred vet visits from here to deep in NJ this year alone. TL;DR - Avoid this place, it's such a sham/scam. They will force doctor consultations, weird appointment fees even when all you want is basic care for your pet. They hold your pet hostage by refusing service unless you give into their asks. Look I understand how businesses work and run. I'm an entrepreneur and I get it, a business needs to make money. So I'm not shocked a business is trying to make money but when you do it in an unethical, unscrupulous way taking advantage of animals who can't speak that's when I have a real problem. Against the recommendation of our friends I've been a vinegar hill vet customer for close to 4 years. The first 2 years were actually okay. Even if their fees was higher than everyone else, I was comfortable paying it as I felt I got what I needed but the past two years it's just gotten so bad I had to fire them as my dog's vet this am. Everytime I would take my dog to get his 1) anal glands squeezed 2) prescription refills 3) his vaccine shot there would be this added pressure to get a doctor's check up. I gave in twice and I usually am in the room as my dog gets very anxious without me, I notice the doctor would perform this "check up" in under a minute. Check eyes, check breath, check coat for ticks and check weight chart. 200-250$ for that! I felt like a sucker when it happened twice and I told myself I'm not going to let them take advantage of me anymore. I go back for a prescription refill and they tell me a refill cannot be given unless the doctor performs a check up. I refuse and they make me sign a waiver, I signed it - walk out and I notice they still charge me 110$ for a doctor's appointment !!! I was livid but couldn't do anything and walked away. Next visit - he needed his vaccine shot. Refused to give it unless I got a check up. My dog has 3 vets as well move between 3 cities. I told them he just saw his vet and he's good, they refuse to provide service unless I could show them proof. I showed them a copy of the appointment and a receipt of the bill- they wanted me to get a letter in writing from the doctor that my dog was okay health wise. I told them there is no way the doctor could respond immediately to my note and to just give my dog his vaccine. They begrudgingly agreed after I kept asking them why a bill and appointment wasn't good enough proof. So clearly at this point- I'm marked in the system as someone who's pushing back against these silly practices so the next time i take my dog to the vet to get his anal glands flushed. I've been paying $45 for almost 3.5 years everytime I go to them for something that takes under 30 seconds I notice they charge me $60. $45 for expressing the anal gland and $15 for a tech appointment . Again I let it go and didn't say a word, just furious at myself for not checking before booking an appointment. Finally we get to this am - want to get my dog his vaccine shots, guess what happens? No doctors check up no vaccine. At this point I ask them to send me my dog's reports and tell them I'm done using them. I would have just ended things there and not even come here to write this massive post but the thing that pushed me over was when they sent my dog's medical records, they just didn't send only his medical records. They sent his records embedded with their notes which make it seem like I was being a difficult parent to prevent other vets from taking us on. These guys are unethical and I would advise everyone to stay away from them and listen to folks who ask you to stay away from them in dumbo/brooklyn heights neighborhood. read more

WORST VET EVER I brought my guinea pig here a year ago because he wasn't eating they gave me medicine and the next following day he was throwing up blood. I contacted them and they told me to bring my guinea pig back in so I brought him back in and they continue giving him medicine after medicine the day after my guinea pig PASSED I called them and contacted them regarding the passing and all they can say is they have a crematory package for me to pay for ,they did not say sorry . Do not recommend this place for avian services. Took our small bird and while there asked for a wing trim. Technician cut wings incorrectly. After 5 years of flying, our bird can't properly land and therefore can't fly anymore without injury as a direct result. Will take a year for the feathers to grow back and recover. It's really basic avian knowledge and their staff should've known better. read more

Highly recommend! They squeezed our 15 year old furry baby without appointment. Baby was having difficulty walking and breathing. Receptionists and techs were very nice. Doctor was very patient and took the time to explain all of our options. Our furry baby is now feeling more comfortable and in less pain. Stay far, far away, especially from Amy Edelman, who is a vet there. She was scheduled to do an at-home euthanasia, an understandably stressful and painful experience, but when a discrepancy over the cost of services arose, she responded with the solution that she should go. (I was quoted a lower price over the phone and when I received the bill, 20 minutes before the scheduled procedure, they padded it with another $95 line item. I immediately called the office to clarify the cost, but they told me I'd have to speak to the doctor about it. ) I tried to do that when she arrived, and Dr. Adelman didn't have the problem solving ability to see that in that situation, all she had to do was call the office, which was still open, and discuss it with whomever had authority to recify the situation. (The office claimed the person with the authority was Amy Edelman, herself.) Instead, she chose to run away. I spent the entire weekend preparing myself and my pet for this experience, trying to make my cat as comfortable as possible, and now I have to rush to find another solution. Amy Edelman's lack of common sense has made the whole process unnecessarily traumatic and I'm absolutely sick with regret that I ever found this place. read more

Warning- do not take your pet here. I took my 3 month old, 10 lb puppy here for a check up. During the check-up, the vet administered 3 shots in a row to my dog, without taking into account her size, age, or tolerance of vaccines. After being administered so many shots in one sitting, my puppy was incredibly ill for 3 days- throwing up, diarrea, not eating or drinking water. I ended up hospitalizing my dog and the new vet was shocked that her 10lb body had been given so many drugs at once- for reference, this is usually the dosage given to a 70lb dog in one sitting. This new vet also shared that this doctor should have their license taken away. This vet also charges a mandatory examination fee for a booster shot, which I learned after further research is incredibly unnecessary and just another way to overcharge their customers. Put simply this office is in it for the money and does not care about the well being of your pet. Lastly, each and every staff member who works here is incredibly rude, condescending, and unprofessional. Among others, Amy Edelman is a horrific person- she is cruel, insensitive, and disrespectful I won't be returning here and I encourage anyone else who cares about the safety of their pet as well as their finances to do the same. read more

I made the mistake of ignoring all the negative reviews about them being out for the money ONLY. This is true and I had a horrible experience when my pet needed an important duct flush. The first couple times I called to arrange appointment everyone was kind but my experience the day of was horrible. They will do and say anything to tac on additional charges including putting your pets life at risk. Agree 100% with the other reviews. They are TERRIBLE. I came here because it was convenient for me- I live 2 blocks away. Front desk people were unwelcoming, did not care at all. The vets would speak to you literally 5 minutes and you can tell they are after your money and do not care at all. Then boom, $600 vet bill. TOTAL SCAM! read more

I just saw Dr. Palatt for an examination of my beautiful golden hamster. Finding veterinary care for small animals, like hamsters, is surprisingly challenging, as most clinics cater to dogs and cats. But I was very impressed with the friendliness of the staff, and the knowledgeability of Dr. Palatt. She gave my hamster a wonderful examination, and offered to prescribe medicines if his symptoms change in the coming weeks without having to rebook an appointment. Wonderful! She was also very kind and said many nice things about my hamster. And so, I highly recommend Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group for small animals care! read more

My very beloved cat unfortunately died just over a year ago. Since then, Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group has been sending me texts about her need for an appointment. Her remains are pictured below. She does not need an appointment. Despite several phone calls and texts, I continue to receive these painful reminders on a regular basis - over a year after her death. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this place until they learn to care about the folks they claim to serve. They also overcharge for labs. Do some homework before coming here. read more

This review is for Dr. Palatt and the very sweet Jessica at the front desk. I had to write a review in case any other person is looking for a vet for their turtle!! I have a turtle that I've had since I was young and he never had any issues that needed me to bring him to a vet. This past Thanksgiving he was not looking and acting like himself and I got really nervous that he was experiencing symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. I went crazy looking for exotic vets who know about turtles and after little sleep and lots of YELP searching, I found Vinegar Hill. When I called up at 8 AM on the Friday after Thanksgiving, Jessica informed me that ALL of the vets here are exotic vets and any one of them could see him. What a relief! The cost was a bit higher than some other quoted places, but I would pay whatever to make sure he was ok. Dr. Palatt was super sweet and gentle with my fiesty little guy (thankfully he was looking better this morning) and she was able to give him a couple injections to facilitate his improvements. She also emailed me with tons of information to help with changing his habitat and diet as he is getting older (he's like 21!) and might need more attention and care. I am very grateful my buddy is feeling better and I am thankful to Vinegar Hill for putting my mind at ease. Worth it! :) read more
