Top notch. If you're like me, your dog is your child. And if anything ever happened to him, I wouldn't be able to function. So it's absolutely imperative that I get him the best veterinary care. My first experience with Boerum Hill Vet was in 2020 on a Sunday when my usual vet was closed. I had to drop him off due to COVID protocols, but he was seen by Dr. Martinez, who diagnosed him with and treated him for a luxating patella. Our previous vet was a few blocks away, so I never went back to Boerum Hill Vet, but I saved their phone number in case I needed them on a Sunday in the future. Fast forward to 2023. My old vet practice was purchased by Heart of Chelsea veterinary group. They replaced all of the vets and staff and brought in their own, so it was an entirely new practice, AND they raised their prices 20-50% across the board. I also moved out of the neighborhood, so I had no reason to return. It came time for my dog to get teeth cleaning and extractions. Previously, my old vet quoted me $2,600. Then when it became Heart of Chelsea, they quoted me $3,111. I figured I'd check around for prices at other vet practices in the area just to compare, since my old vet was no longer at his practice anyway. Boerum Hill Vet quoted me $800-$1,400 with a 20% discount for the months of Jan-Feb. Another highly regarded practice in the area quoted me $1,100-$1,800. I knew immediately I wouldn't be going to my old vet to pay more for the same service. But the question I had was, was I getting what I paid for at Boerum Hill Vet? I found a post in a neighborhood FB group where someone else highly recommended Dr. Martinez. They said they have two vets in the family and thus have very high standards. Based on this and my previous positive experience, I decided to schedule a pre-op appointment with Dr. Martinez, since we never met in person the first time, and I wanted to get to know the vet who would potentially be doing the dental work. First of all, her demeanor is the absolute best. She is friendly, compassionate, but most importantly, knowledgeable! She quelled any fears and answered my barrage of questions. On the day of the dental work, the staff was great. I was nervous about my dog going under anesthesia, because he is a small dog and the risk is elevated. They called me multiple times throughout the day to let me know how things were progressing. The dental procedure was a huge success. His teeth came out great and he had 5 small extractions. They sent me home with VERY detailed instructions and all the medications we needed. Another thing I love about this practice is that they call the next day to see how the dog is doing. They also send out email communication reminders and automatically email me the receipt. Their FB page is adorable, too! My old practice never did any of those things. Communication here is top notch. Long story long, we have a new vet. I couldn't be happier with Dr. Martinez and the staff at Boerum Hill Vet. Highly recommend!!! read more

I have been going to Veterinary Center of Boerum Hill for the past 8 years. Dr Arpino is the only one I trust with my pets. He took care of my Belle (papillon) whom I had for 17 years. His bedside manner her made her feel at ease - which is no small feat when dealing with a small dog. When I moved out of state I continued to visit this clinic, planning trips to NY/NJ around the visits for my pet. Last week I just got a new puppy, an American foxhound (which are usually very shy). She warmed right up to Dr Arpino at her first visit and let him pet in her stomach - a sign of complete trust! I'm a firm believer than dogs have a better sense of people than humans do, and when I see my dogs with Dr Arpino I have complete faith that they are in the right hands. If you love and value your pet's(baby's) life DO NOT! I Repeat DO NOT! Treat your pet at this clinic. I took my perfectly healthy 3 yr old dog for an X-ray and received ba call that my baby was dead! his leg which he sprained an had been showing improvements. The Dr. Rhys Henry an inexperienced and incompetent Vet kept persisting that the X-rays had to be done under sedation even though my dog's signs of improvements even though I had discussed alternate options for treatment. Now I have to live with the guilt and broken heart. PLEASE! Don't take your fur baby to this clinic for treatment. read more

I live far in the Bronx and i come all the way here for services. The office is also very pleasant and I love how they coordinate their schedule. I have had two very traumatizing experiences with Veterinary Wellness. In the first instance they diagnosed my cat with cancer, leaving almost no hope and essentially no explanation of other possible causes of the diagnostics they were seeing. We had to spend over a week mourning our car thinking he only had 6 months to live - this was the outcome the vet laid out for us. We came in a week later for another round of expensive tests and lo and behold the spots on his lungs were gone. The vet posited that maybe he'd had a respiratory infection. If this was a possible cause why wasn't this offered before? They suggested we come in a month later for another round of the same expensive tests just to confirm - we declined. The second experience we had was when we brought in our cat because he was straining to poop, not using the litter box. From our layman's perspective this looked like constipation. The vet felt his bladder and although it felt essentially normal suggests we do a full work up with X-rays and blood work to rule out a urinary blockage. The blood tests showed no indication of abnormal potassium or renal levels. His bladder looked full but not abnormally so. There was evidence of a large amount of feces built up but the vet's diagnosis was a probable urinary blockage and they sent us to an emergency vet - charging over $800 for the diagnostics. We trusted her opinion and went to Blue Pearl - they basically laughed us out of there saying our cat just needed an enema and that the diagnostics results they reviewed that Veterinary Wellness sent over did not show the usual worrisome signs of a urinary blockage - no elevated renal or potassium levels. Blue Pearl sent us back to Veterinary Wellness because an enema there would be much more expensive. Instead of immediately seeing us after making this mistake, which cost us hours of our time and our cats discomfort, they sat us in the lobby. Still waiting to be seen. read more

We have visited many other clinics with very little support towards the situation were in with the dogs cancer but Dr. Arpino has been extraordinary and making us feel very comfortable, it was most caring and enthusiastic opinion. First and foremost the vet at this spot has changed 3 times over the last 3 years. We haven't had any dangerous experiences but we do not feel welcomed or supported when we take our dog in. Over the last year we've had to remind them to please do a brief exam of him to make sure everything is ok. He has shown that his allergies are an issue and all Dr Katz would do is tell us that his paws are red and inflamed but wouldn't make a suggestion to alleviate the discomfort. They always want to throw at us that a full exam would be an added service like just looking in the dogs ears and examining their body is not apart a vet visit! The services have been minimal and unbothered and seem to cost us more and more with each visit it's not right. The interactions are cold and standoffish. We won't be returning! read more

Bottom line: their incompetence is a danger to your pet's health. Avoid at all costs. Over two years of going here, they've made three dangerous mistakes/oversights, even with routine care, affirmatively putting my dog at deadly risk. Those mistakes were: 1. They failed to test my dog for heartworms or to record when he was due for a test, despite his being a rescue from a high-risk area. They nonetheless twice gave him his annual heartworm vaccine, which can pose a deadly risk when given to an infected dog. I found out--two years after the first time they vaccinated him--that he WAS heartworm positive the whole time. The vet at another practice who discovered this was horrified that they had not conducted a test before vaccinating him and that they had not recommended or conducted routine testing. 2.They failed multiple times to provide us complete vaccination records, omitting vaccines they had already given him and risking duplicate vaccinations. I had to point this out to them multiple times before it was corrected. 3. My partner brought my dog to have a bump inspected, but because it was during COVID lockdown, my partner couldn't go in to the exam room and had to wait outside. The doctor reported that she saw no bump, and recorded in my dog's record that "owner claims" there was a bump--not "reports," or "says," but "claims." We took our pup elsewhere, where they not only saw the bump but biopsied it. That bump was cancer. Don't go here. read more

I hate to leave negative reviews and only am leaving this after having three bad experiences with the vets at this clinic. We no longer are seeing the vets at this clinic because we do not trust them to properly diagnose or treat our dog. 1.) Our dog is a senior with a severe dry eye condition. We first brought him to see Dr. Arpino about a week after adopting him. During that visit Dr. Arpino did not conduct any tests to evaluate the state of our dogs dry eye, but sold us a medication that he said would be much more effective in treating our dog's condition than the medication we were using at the time (given to us by the rescue agency). We did not at the time know the right questions to ask, and we trusted that Dr. Arpino had the expertise and would not steer us wrong. Fast forward two months later -- we learn from an ophthalmologist that the medication recommended by Dr. Arpino was much weaker than the original medication we were using, and was actually causing our dog's dry eye to worsen. The ophthalmologist was very concerned that Dr. Arpino gave us a new medication without ever conducting a tear test on him, and without recommending we see a veterinary ophthalmologist. 2.) A few weeks after adopting our dog we noticed he was pawing at his eyes more than usual and heavy mucus was discharging from his eye. I suspected he had an ulcer and took him to this clinic. (He was seen by a female vet this time, not by Dr. Arpino). Again - without checking for an ulcer or conducting any tests, the vet assured us repeatedly that our dog's eye was "fine," and that the pawing and mucus we noticed coming from his eye was "normal" in dogs with dry eye. Again, after taking our dog to the ophthalmologist some weeks later, it was confirmed that he had an ulcer that had gone untreated. After this incident I stopped taking our dog to this clinic for his eye condition, but I figured we could still go for routine visits and things like nail clippings. 3.) The last straw came recently, when we suspected that our dog had an ear infection because his ear was smelling yeasty. I figured this is a very basic condition to treat, and that it wouldn't hurt to bring him to Boerum Hill Vet. At the appointment, Dr. Katz sold us 2 medications and an ear cleanser without swabbing our dogs ear. She seemed almost suspicious of us -- like we were lying about noticing a smell. After a few weeks, we noticed no change in his ear and decided to get a second opinion. Our new vet swabbed our dogs ear, confirmed he had a bad bacterial infection, and prescribed a different course of treatment. We are very frustrated to have spent the money on the visit and medications at Boerum Hill Vet, which were apparently prescribed without any serious investigation into what was wrong. I hate to leave this review because the other staff at this location are great. We've taken our dog to get his nails clipped a few times and the vet techs -- a young man and woman who also work at the front desk -- are always phenomenal and very sweet with our dog. But our experience with the vets is that they are oblivious at best, negligent at worst. I recommend you look elsewhere for your dogs and cats, ESPECIALLY if you have an older pet or a pet with special needs. read more

Why? + separate cat and dog entrances so Lucky doesn't see scary dogs (who I'm sure are very good doggos) + cat exam rooms with plug in kitty pheromone scent thingies to relax Lucky + cubbyholes in the exam rooms that cats can crawl in and feel safe in (Lucky loved this!!) + Mercedes in the front who is so nice! + a really knowledgeable vet who will clearly work with you and your very complicated cat who is on many medications + on-site blood work lab so I don't have to wait days to find out how my lil dude is doing They also have a website I can order kitty meds (including compounded) and supplies from but I haven't tried that out yet. read more

I brought my dog here for standard visits for three years , while I was content with the service then, after my recent experiences, I have decided to move to a different vet. My dog was recently diagnosed with a serious disease and the response from the staff/vets was aloof. They could not be bothered. On many occasions, they would not respond to questions. I would need to call back several times, waiting nearly a week for a response. Whereas they made sure to receive their deposits and payments for services promptly. Of note, anytime I picked up my dog, they would not bring him out to me until I paid. They are more concerned with money than demonstrating empathy and delivering care. I know it is a business, but our pets mean a great deal to us, so money should not be the paramount concern. read more

This vet is amazing! We've been seeing Dr. Arpino for over a year now and couldn't be more pleased. He's extremely knowledgable and kind . . . and takes the time with each you and your pet to answer any questions and concerns you might have. When our puppy suffered a leg injury, Dr. A was communicative with us and with our surgeon at every step in the process. I was so grateful to have him on our team. We've also seen Dr. Sether and she was lovely and so patient with our little doggo who's a little apprehensive of the vet now (see leg injury above). Agnes along with the doctor examined my cat and gave him vaccines as well as clipped his claws, my cat was very comfortable and at ease. I have been taking my cats here ever since moving to Downtown BK about 18 months ago. One of my kitties had advanced kidney disease, so I was in and out of the office pretty often. Even during the lockdown, this office found a way to make sure Maya and I were both taken care of. When it was time for Maya to cross the rainbow bridge, Dr. Arpino wasn't in that day. But, the doctor I saw was equally lovely and wonderful. I remember her saying, "You have to remember that it is a gift to be able to end your pet's suffering. It's actually the greatest act of love." At our previous Vet, our dog Emmy was so out of control that they would need to sedate her to even do a basic wellness exam or bring in 4-5 techs to hold her down during her appointment. When we moved to Park Slope, we took Emmy to Veterinary Wellness Center and warned Dr. Arpino and his tech Holly about Emmy's crazy nervous energy. Dr. Arpino and Holly used a totally different approach with treating our dog and, without restraining her or sedating her, were able to do an exam AND get blood from her. It was honestly shocking and incredible and left us EXTREMELY impressed with the level of expertise at this vet center. There's nothing better than seeing your dog happy and calm at the place they are usually most anxious. We are overly protective dog parents and yet Dr. Arpino and Holly earned our trust completely during our appointment. We have definitely found our new vet for our Emmy!!! read more

When my cat's health began declining due to being FeLV+ (an immune deficiency disorder), they were alongside us each and every step of the way providing options, advice, and comfort. This place just opened up and I (and my dog Tito) have had 2 great experiences. They were quick to see us, and Dr. Arpino and Dr. Ford, as well as their assistants, were both very helpful.
