Disappointed in Vine & Barrel. I had a visit on my to-do list for a long time because they seem to have an interesting selection, plus they get good reviews. Perhaps they had an off day when I visited. Asked the server a few basic questions but his wine knowledge was hit-and-miss. I expect more from a shop that specializes in wine. The place smelled like urine, more than I would expect from having broken a bottle of Sauv Blanc. I purchased a glass of a Spanish red. The glass was good, but the bottle I bought was oxidized and not drinkable. Partly my fault I suppose because it was a ten year old Crianza from a not-famous region, and I know enough to know that such a wine could be hit-and-miss. read more

Even though Vine & Barrel has been in town for quite some time, I never really had an opportunity to check it out until they moved to Kentucky, and I'm really glad I did! Jason is a hoot - he's super friendly and of course knowledgeable about wines, no matter the occasion. I've not had a single bad wine from his shop, and he's actually turned us on to many lesser known varietals/regions that often are exceptional values. His wine club is a great value at $38/month for your choice of two wines ($19/bottle) between two red and two white wine offers, for which he emails very detailed notes, along with Petaluma's best dry humor, once per month. On top of that, you can buy as many bottles as you want at the club price if you want more, you get 15% off any other bottle in the shop, and you get discounted by-the-glass wines if you ever feel like popping in for a drink. Now that we've amassed a large collection of wine, we've had to cancel all of our wine clubs, but not this one - it's too good of a value. What I love about the shop is that you can find some cult classics and high end wines (I think I saw a '16 Mouton Rothschild sitting on a rack), but also wines from small producers, many local. I asked Jason for a $60 bottle of Pinot Noir, balanced like an Italian food wine, and from Sonoma County. The wine he picked was more like $45. Who DOES that? My DIL tasted the wine on Christmas Eve and said "Yes!!!" It doesn't get any better than that. I also asked for a $40 Pinto Noir from Sonoma County . The one he picked was very close to that. Great place! They have quite an extensive menu of small plates. We didn't eat... because we had just eaten, but I could see this being a fantastic place to hang with friends, chill with some wine and some nice food. The guy running the place, I should have gotten his name, was nice as could be. Very friendly, very informative and not stuffy. Some wine folks are stuffy. Not here. We enjoyed a few glasses of wine and purchased a few bottles to go. If we lived in town I think this would be our hangout. The seating area is very comfy and inviting. When/if we come back to Petaluma, this is a place we will definitely come back to visit. read more

Came here for the first time. Would be a good choice for someone who wants to watch a game and doesn't care too much about wine. I had a four wine flight of who knows what wine. The wine is listed by type of wine and region grown, not winery. The wine bar tender did not know much about them. I tried 4 different wines and did not finish any of them. Picture attached Is how much wine I left Unfinished. One tasted like vinegar, and had been open for too long. It looks like their wine bottle selection has some decent wines to choose but I would not recommend the wines I tried tonight in their wine bar selection. We love wine and with so much great wine in Sonoma county, was disappointed. read more

Weird, creepy place with zero service- got nothing out of them. Walked in expecting good wines and small nibbles to go with them. It's a sad atmosphere- most of the space is just full of clutter with a randomly spaced tables intended for groups. This is a 1 man show. So the 1 man pointed me to the menu on a blackboard and vanished inside. The menu looked interesting but I wasn't even shown a table and cud not figure out where to sit among the clutter. There were 2 couples sitting and watching TV with no sign of the 1 man. I peeped into the kitchen to see 1 man rolling bacon over something (some person's order perhaps?). My boyfniend and I were headed north to Lake Sonoma for a camping trip when my car broke down on the 101, just shy of Petaluma. After getting it towed to a nearby repair shop, my boyfriend and I were stranded in downtown Petaluma while we waited for our ride home. We wandered into this store while trying to kill some time. We really liked the vibe of this place, so we decided to buy a bottle and hang out there while sipping on his wine. We had a fantastic time. The wine was great. Jason (owner) and Augustus (owner's long-time friend) were a blast to hang out with. After we finished the bottle and our ride showed up, Jason recommended his favorite restaurant to us for dinner. I'll DEFINITELY be back. I just wish this place were closer to home so I could come here more often! read more

I do not understand the high reviews for this place. My boyfriend and I went here on a Saturday night around 6:30. We walked in and the atmosphere was quite sad. No music, and we were the only customers so it was very quiet, besides the baseball game that was playing on tv. The guy behind the bar was nice, but that was about it. He stood there and stared at the tv the whole time. For being in wine country, the selection of local wines by the glass was sad. I wanted a white so I picked the least expensive (since nothing really grabbed me). I got the Vino Verde for $7 a glass. This is a wine you can get for about $3 a bottle at Trader Joe's. My boyfriend got a Zinfandel which was pretty good. But for $11 a glass I would certainly hope so. The place was oddly decorated, and there were a lot of empty boxes on the floor below the the shelves displaying the wine. My boyfriend went to use the bathroom, which he said was very dirty, and the back area was dirty as well. There are so many great restaurants and bars in Petaluma that I would not go back here. This is place is overpriced and the atmosphere is dirty and awkward. read more

We passed through Petaluma en route to wine country, unsure at the time exactly where we would stop to set up HQ for our vacation. We stopped in for some wine and cheese and found Jason running the store and wine bar by himself at the time. Jason proved to be an amazing resource for references in the area. Some of his recommendations turned out to be the best experiences of our trip. He is a wealth of knowledge about the area, so use him as a resource if that's your destination. This place is a combination wine shop and wine bar, with a very laid back atmosphere. It's a great spot for pick-up conversations with strangers, which for us was kind of the point of our trip. Considering this is an extension of wine country, I had higher expectations. The employee was eating at the counter and referred us to the chalk wall menu to order our drinks. When we asked if there was a recommended wine, no recommendation was given but tastings were offered as explanation. No story presented, no charm, no enticement. A and I were in Petaluma downtown for dinner at Cucina Paradiso, and after getting denied by the sold out showing of Avengers, we wandered a bit for something low key. Vine & Barrel pretty much fit the bill :) We're by NO means wine connoisseurs or even enthusiasts, but we figured we were in wine country so we each tried a glass. I went with a Chilean red and he went with a Greek pinot noir. It made sense why his was more expensive than mine--but that's the extent to which I will comment on the wine. Vine & Barrel is this wine shop that has a bit of a nook in the back with a couple chalkboards that sell by the glass. It was a Friday night, nothing too busy in quaint little Petaluma, but there were some people there watching TV, a couple enjoying a bottle of prosecco, and the two of us. I enjoyed that even at our low-level wine drinking we were able to have a good time without feeling too self-conscious of our lack of wine knowledge. I ordered the napa cab they have, pretty decent and i ordered a manchego, fig jam, olive and bread app and it was not great, olives were not crisp, the jam was fresh out of a jar and it came with peanuts (i guess to fill you up as the portion is small), very friendly staff. This wine shop was exactly what I was looking for- they are flooded with wines from all over the world. The prices were reasonable and the speakeasy bar in the back is super-cool. I got myself a glass of wine and sipped while I shopped. I am acquainted with the senior wine steward, but I did not see him there. So I can not say enough wonderful things about this place!!! I love it! Jason is amazing and is always so helpful with suggestions and advice. I feel as if I have already learned so much about wine and pairing in the short time that I have discovered this gem of a place. Not only is there an amazing selection of wines for purchase, the wine bar is a great place to hang out, drink delicious wine or beer and snack on amazing tapas. Apparently they offer the "best tuna melt ever', but I have yet to try it. If you are over the bar scene downtown, but would still like to have a few drinks with friends, I highly recommend this as an alternative to McNears or other bars downtown. All I know, is that I love this place. And the vibe is so much better than the generic wine bar located in the Theater District! You will not be disappointed. read more

It's locally owned by a man that only embodies what it means. It gives you the experience of being in a wine cellar without the huge vineyard and crowd. Vine and Barrel will surprise you. I stopped in the other day to purchase a few bottles of sparkling wine for a brunch and the owner was extremely helpful. He suggested some great value bubbles for Mimosa making. Dry and delicious, along with something a bit more special for the folks that like their bubbles without the juice. I paid for my purchase at the back of the store at a lovely little bar top and seating area. The vine and barrel also serves wine and beer and the atmosphere is comfortable and cool. However, for the rest of us, we want good wine for good value and the best way to find that is to have the right kind of person, with the right attitude and sincerity, to help us out. I've been to Vine and Barrel numerous times and have consistently been impressed with the selection, the attention to detail and the focused, caring attention of the proprietor. There are very few wine shops in the bay area where you can receive such high quality, personal attention that leaves you feeling like you got a great deal on some fantastic wine. Jason, the owner, was super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and steered us to some great buys, even though he was busily setting up for a wine tasting in an hour.
