I enjoyed a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon with my meal: Primitivo Di Manduria, Carlo Sani 'Oro' Riserva, Puglia. It is a full-bodied Italian red wine with a flavor profile of red jam, dark fruits, chocolate and spice--up my alley! Once seated, we noticed right away that the menu didn't match what we had seen online. In the videos, every pasta dish came with burrata, but here it was an extra charge. The bread bowl itself was also a $7 add-on, which pushed the $25 pasta dishes to nearly $40 each -- a price that simply doesn't make sense for what you get. Staff was friendly, but the busboys seemed completely untrained, and service overall was slow. We did receive our minestrone soup quickly, but it was just okay. The soup's kidney beans and chickpeas were noticeably undercooked. When the pasta arrived, the disappointment continued. The burrata, which we paid extra for, was cold and hard rather than creamy. Even the waitress seemed surprised when we pointed it out. We also noticed that the regular pasta dishes (served in normal bowls) were much larger portions than the bread-bowl pastas -- despite the bread bowls costing more. At the end of the meal, the reality became clear: the bread-bowl trend is more gimmick than substance. With two pasta dishes and one soup totaling around $100, the value just isn't there. Unfortunately, we won't be returning. Don't be fooled by what you see on social media -- the experience simply doesn't live up to the hype.

At many other restaurants I've visited, I've been disappointed by stuffed lobster dishes that contain far too much filler and very little actual seafood. That is certainly not the case at Popei's! Their stuffing strikes the perfect balance, featuring a generous amount of delicious lump crabmeat and large, whole shrimp without excessive filler. Their stuffed lobster is truly exceptional! My husband ordered the Chicken Parmesan lunch special, which he thoroughly enjoyed as well. What makes Popei's even more special is its outstanding hospitality. The owner, Joe, genuinely cares about his customers and takes pride in ensuring they have an enjoyable dining experience. I had the pleasure of chatting with him today and even learned some interesting facts about lobster. The service here is consistently excellent. Every time I visit I always grab a few pizzas to bring home and I always make sure to ask to upgrade to DOP ingredients. This place is as authentic as it gets. From the oven, which was imported from Naples, to the owner being a certified pizzaiolo, and the amount of DOP ingredients in use and available, there's a level of care and respect for Neapolitan pizza that you can taste in the each pizza. The ingredients are excellent, the crust is consistently great, the dough has the perfect chew , and nothing feels like an afterthought. Over the years they've grown in popularity and have added several new items on the menu, to include pizzas, but the ones that stay constant in my rotation are Moms, The Margareta (DOP), and the meatball with ricotta. For me, they make the best neopolitan pizza on Long Island. I also love that it's connected to the pork store next door. There's something about the whole setup that feels like a throwback to my childhood and the kind of Italian American places I grew up around that seem like there's so few of today. Going to Saverio's is more than just grabbing a pizza. There's whole experience has a warmth and authenticity to it that's increasingly hard to find...and while you're waiting for your pizza, going next door and buying some food, whether it's cold cuts, cheeses, or pasta is very much a part of the experience.
