I asked them to install a tankless water heater. The plumber did a fantastic job installing the water heater. Except, as a plumber, he didn't do electric work. He used an extension cord running to the back yard to plug it in, said the job was good and asked for payment. We didn't pay him because the electrical work wasn't finished, nor did we receive the permit as part of the job. The next day, I had to call them about the electrical work. It hadn't been scheduled, and the job had been marked as finished. They did send out an electrician to install the electrical outlet. The work was great. Again, the electrician asked for payment. I reminded them that the permit was still outstanding. The next day, they had my credit card number on file for a different job, and just used that number to charge for the work. But the job wasn't finished. I paid them a good amount of money, that they charged me for to get the permit for the work. For three weeks I have been trying to contact them to finish the work. In the past, you could talk to someone. Now, every time I call, I get a AI service rep that sends me to voice mail. I have left many, many voice mails, and I have never gotten a call back. I did get a call back from Hank, the AI agent, who then again sent me to a voice mail. Honestly, it pains me to say that they are not the same company they were a year ago. And now, for the first time in 20 years, I now need to find a more reliable plumber.

It only occurred when the weather was hot. Basically, only summer afternoons. We had PG&E come out repeatedly and they could not find the source. We spoke with plumbers and other heater repair companies. All of them told us that it was not our heater; that we were wrong about the inconsistency of the smell. That gas leaks are only consistent and would not happen only when it was hot. We were told that we must be wrong. We felt like we were going crazy. Until we called Bay Area Water Heaters and Dave came out (with a whole crew). He took the time to inspect our heater and said yes, this slight gas smell on hot days is something he had heard of. It was likely due to an old valve within the control panel. He walked us through our options but ultimately suggested replacing the entire heater. His team was able to do the job right then and there and at a reasonable rate. It was completed within the hour. And sure enough, no more gas smell in our garage. Dave and his team were amazing and incredibly professional. We will be using this company again.

I had scheduled a service appointment and needed to cancel. I understand that cancellations impact a schedule, so I remained completely calm and polite throughout the conversation and paid their full cancellation fee immediately without hesitation or dispute. Despite complying with their policy right away, the owner became hostile. He lost his temper, raised his voice, and berated me for how much the cancellation hurt his business. A cancellation fee is meant to cover lost time--it is not a license to yell at and lecture paying customers who are speaking respectfully. Handling ordinary business interactions with this level of aggression and emotional volatility is completely unacceptable. I would strongly advise against dealing with an owner who treats customers this way.

We were replacing a gas water heater with a hybrid electric heat pump water heater. Generally, this…read moretype of heater costs twice as much (price and installation) as a traditional electric water heater, but costs a lot less to run (and therefore you recoup the additional cost in a few years from lower operating costs). I had a very easy experience getting an on-site quote. I received 3 quotes for this job. 2 quotes, including this one, came in around $7100. I went with a third one at around $6700 (which included an additional mixing valve) and am very happy with my decision. Overall price was not a big part of my decision, but brand of water heater was. After doing some research online, the most recommended brands are AO Smith and Rheem (GE). Both higher quotes were for Navien, which has only been making heat pump water heaters for 1 year, but I was told that it is the most reliable brand. I did not understand how this claim could be made, given how short the duration of evaluation for this product. Even the worst appliances usually work for at least a year. So I requested a quote for AO Smith or Rheem, which I did not get. I'm not sure why my brand request was not honored, but it made me question whether I should go with a company that either has communication issues or maybe some type of deal with Navien that I was not informed about. Many water heater installers are preferred installers of certain brands, which means they can get better pricing, etc. I did not want to be a guinea pig for Navien.

I sent Ivan a video, honestly expecting a quote and a pitch. He called me instead. He walked me through the whole video -- what I was looking at, how you tell ordinary staining apart from actual growth, what the age of the unit was telling us. Nobody else had bothered to explain any of it to me, including the people trying to charge me for it. Then he said the thing that made me trust him. If he swapped the heater out before the staining underneath got dealt with, I'd just be paying to have the same job done twice. He'd rather I handle that part first and bring him back after -- which meant less money for him today. Dear Payless Water Heater and Plumbing Team,…read more I am writing to share my appreciation for the excellent service I received from your company yesterday. We were preparing to leave for vacation when our water heater burner failed for the second time in five years. After previously having a very unpleasant experience dealing with warranty work through a big-box retailer, I decided to call Payless. I am so glad I did. The entire experience was pleasant from the initial phone call all the way to the completion of the job. Because I have roommates and needed the issue resolved immediately for peace of mind, we decided to purchase a new unit through you. Our service technician, Eduardo, was fantastic. He was incredibly patient and knowledgeable, and we were very happy to have him handling our installation. I will happily refer Payless Water Heater and Plumbing to anyone in need of your services.
