Sometimes you just need to bury…read moreyourself in some greasy, fried food made under the music of Led Zeppelin or Sammy Hagar by a cook two packs deep and three shots in. As a solo eater this evening, I naturally ordered an appetizer and a burger, to get that full bar food effect. The appetizer was five (5) breaded jalapeño poppers. Those bad boys came out in the traditional paper boat only a bar can serve food in. It comes with ranch and when I popped that top off the little plastic ramekin, my heart melted more than when I saw a double rainbow. You guessed it. Home. Made. Ranch. You could put homemade ranch on a stick and I'd eat it. The poppers had that perfect breaded crunch, perfect amount of cream cheese filling, and good jalapeño taste. Poppers w/ life changing ranch 8/10. My main course was an olive burger. Nothing particularly popped out at me on the menu, so I just took my time scanning it and let the Bar of Influence™ guide me. I started with just the typical Bay de Noc burger, which is just "burger and bun." Direct quote. But I called an audible and decided to roll with the Olive Burger. Now, personally, I believe a top notch Olive Burger is made with an olive spread AND mayo. Not just olives and mayo. But, sometimes just that olive flavor calls and I don't care how I answer the phone. (To be clear, I answered the phone and it was just olives and mayo). Since I was feeling extra gluttonous, I added another patty. Stop. I know. I call myself those names, too. I do think that bonus patty might have been the patty that broke the camels back. Don't get me wrong, I polished it all off, but I felt degraded afterwards. OBDP (Olive Burger, Double Patty) 7/10. OBSP (Olive Burger, Single Patty) 7.75/10 "But what about the fries?" - You, probably. Okokok, relax. The fries were actually amazing. I never know the name/style of these fries (they looked normal with kind of like crispies stuck to them. Also kind of batter-y? I don't know. I'm not a potato). They had a crispy potato-y outside with a soft potato-y inside. They were the perfect doneness. Unknown Potato Style Fries 10/10. The ambiance was your typical bar type ambiance. High tables, low tables, pool table, juke box, tvs with sports, keno. Good spot. Go do it.

However, I can tell you about The Food, Respect Toward COVID, and their Work Ethic. The Food -- we ordered Deep Fried Pickles, which are hands-down the best fried pickles we've ever had (and we like fried pickles). They were spicy, but not too spicy. It tasted like the pickle itself was spicy and the panko had its own, unique seasoning. I wish they served those as a side dish to the sandwich instead of the fries! I ordered the "Wheaty's Wings" which claim to come with '7 Mammoth wings with every order' and they were some huge wings-- this is a real meal! I ordered plain wings and they were crispy and juicy and hot. Excellent! My husband ordered the Cordon Bleu Sandwich which has a juicy, seasoned chicken beast with Swiss and ham -- think chicken cordon bleu meets hoggie! He woofed that down! We ordered fries with the sandwich for a couple dollars more and they were okay... definitely not the same level of culinary skill as the rest of the food we ordered, we had to add lots of salt (Which is good that they don't load them with salt for people who can't tolerate that) and they still weren't so great. Respect Toward COVID -- Masks are required in order to enter this bar and she's serious! When you walk in, she sanitizes a table for you right there. She is constantly washing her hands and wearing a mask. As I watched her, I saw her touch her face about 3 times and each time she cleaned her hands in some fashion. She sanitizes bar stools, the bar -- she's on top of this. The chef is washing her hands and wearing a mask. There are only 2 women running the whole place and while they're doing all of their work, they're also constantly sanitizing. When people come in off the street and there's no where for them to sit, she gives them the option to sit on patio where they won't get food or drink service, but they can wait and she'll come and get them when a table is free or they can purchase a drink and sit and drink it outside. The tables are spaced more than 6 feet apart and the whole bar can maybe seat 30 max. Work Ethic -- there are 2 women running this VERY busy bar. The Front House Manager and the Chef. They're taking to-go orders and bussing tables and refilling drinks and sanitizing and washing their hands and reminding people to wear masks and every few minutes someone comes in off the street and wants to know when they can get a table. And they're doing it flawlessly! We were there around 9:30pm on a Saturday, so I imagine it was a long day of doing that constantly, but both women were exceptionally polite and answered questions and payed close attention to guests and we never had to wait longer than a few minutes for anything. Support Yooper-ran businesses, support small business, and get the fried pickles!

First, the service. It was a little slow to get rolling but the gal who helped us out was top-notch. She went above & beyond after my 82yr old father hurt his hand somewhere en route to or from the restroom. He was holding a napkin on it & was embarrassed. She discreetly brought him a bandaid, PUT IT ON & TOOK THE SOILED NAPKIN. Even now, it brings a teat to the eye. She was kind & understanding. To say it was touching would be an understatement. Each couple split a chicken pasty meal, the parents had water, while the hubs & I each added a local beer. The pasty crust was light & flaky. The filling wasn't overly seasoned but had good flavor. The slaw was sweet & solid. The star I would have docked for could be cleaner overall (those displays collect stuff) & faster in service gets a wash from the detail and time well-spent on that service. I'd much rather wait a little longer & leave feeling human. So, maybe we could all slow down a bit & pay more attention to detail.
