Relative to pizza options in Davis, i'd argue this is the best. In the broader pizza world its 3 stars, which still ain't bad either. Small no frills take-out pizza shop. Pies or by-the-slice. A lil pricey, but what isn't these days. NY style, with good sauce-to-cheese-to thickness ratio. Soooo much better than the excuse for pizza found round the corner on g street. The pizzas here absolutely incredible. My boyfriend and I love getting a whole pizza here and indulging on the quality handmade pizza. The best one by far is the vegetarian. But we also really enjoyed the pesto one that we had most recently. I really don't think you can go wrong here actually. Make sure to call in advance and come and pick up the pizza about a half an hour later. They do take a while to make but the wait is worth the pizza. Simple, affordable, tasty, filling. Large slices of pizza at a very reasonable price (translation: CHEAP), student or not. Pizza is usually ready by the register to purchase by the slice. I've tried them all, the pepperoni, veggie, and plain cheese slices. Very generous sizes, and tasty dough and toppings. It really is a great deal, with 1-2 slices for a quick satisfying lunch to go on a dime! I am a fan of their restaurant as well, Village Grill when I'm in the mood for a whole pizza and the sit-down experience. Great quality pizza, hot and ready-to-go. It says gourmet pizza on the bottom of their shop's name and I don't think it is accurate. Their pizzas are not all that in terms of flavor, texture, and price. They only offer three toppings to choose from: vegetarian combo, pepperoni, and cheese. The thin crust of the pizza was very dry and flavorless. Please take the "gourmet pizza" sign off and just stick with the shop's name as display. They give the wrong focus and set the wrong expectation on their "gourmet pizza." read more

Pizza combo makes for a good lunch! Comes with slice of pizza, side salad, and drink. I got the combo pizza and it was definitely a surprise. Very flavorful and unique toppings. Yum yum. Made me want to come back for more. I would definitely order a whole pizza here for dinner, and I wouldn't feel guilty! The location is not ideal. Hard to find parking for this area and it's across from Amtrak. The inside is super super small and there's only 2 small tables inside. There's outdoor seating, but in the winter it's no bueno. These guys have decent pizza. They sell it in slices and you can't beat the prices! I've eaten here a couple times and was pleased with the food. It's a smallish bakery with choices like eclairs, cream puffs, tiramisu, bread and of course the pizza. I've never tried the baked items but they look good. If the pizza is any measure they should be tasty. The shop is on the no frills side but in a good location and has outdoor seating. It's good for a quick bite or take out. When my family came to Davis to visit this past weekend for their first time, I knew I had to take them here. I love this place! My husband and I received great service and food here in the past, and I knew I had to let my family experience the same thing! Our first experience: We ordered the margarita pizza over the phone. The girl on the other end was very friendly and polite. When we got there, the pizza was ready when they specified it would be and was easy to pay for (they take cards), and the overall ambiance of the place has a family feel. It looked like various family members were the ones cooking behind the counter. Perhaps the girl at the cash register was the daughter? She was young, very nice, and smiley! What we got when we took that large white box out of the little restaurant (and yes, it's a very tiny place) did not disappoint! As we drove home with the pizza box, our car was filled with all those smells you come to love and associate with freshly-baked pizza. The taste. Delicious! Chewy crust with the perfect ratio of dough to toppings and sauce. The tomatoes and basil were so fresh! I noticed they also sell pizza by the slice ($3 for pepperoni). It looked like the other options were supreme and cheese, as far as ready-to-eat slices. They also had a delectable assortment of pastries. It's seriously amazing how such a small place can create beautiful pastries AND tasty pizza! I can't wait to try a pastry sometime! (Oh! Pachamama - the coffee shop - sells some Village Bakery pastries in their store). Although I never come here for the pre-made pizza or desserts, the one thing I do buy from here (and a lot of it!) is bread & pizza dough! The bread here is heavenly, & the prices are very reasonable. Some notable bread loaves that I continually purchase are jalapeño cheese, kalamata olive bread, and the asiago cheese bread. They make for excellent sandwiches! And the pizza dough here is awesome & you can buy it fresh ball of it or it may be rolled out & frozen. It just depends on what they have in stock at the time. When you come early in the morning, you can often get fresh dough, then roll it out yourself at home to whatever size you want. But later in the afternoon, often times they have already rolled it out to a large size & frozen it, so you carry out a big frozen pizza crust! The quality of the pizza this time around was definitely sub-par. The crust was burnt, and there was no pizza sauce and barely only cheese! I must first disclose, my girlfriend works here, so I am often treated to a free lunch. Best pizza in town hands down. Miles away from Woodstocks, beats the hell out of the crap they have in the DC, don't even get me started on Papa Johns. That being said, the pizza does have some room for improvement, it's nothing like the 'New York Style' they advertise it as, but that doesn't mean its not good. Ordered 30 danishes for the office and was able to pick them up as early as 7AM. Baker was super nice and even tossed in a free package of braided bread with my order. Danishes were bigger than my face and were super delicious. I'm new in Davis and everyone at work who've been working and living in town said they never tasted a danish this good and was surprised when I told them it's local (like, 5 minutes from our office). Such a hidden gem! I would always come here for lunch in high school. Perfect place to get a slice of pizza especially if you want a small lunch. A slice is pretty expensive but it's worth it. I'd give Village Bakery 5 stars if it wasn't so costly. It was my first time here and I got a meat and veggie combo, whole pie. I rarely rate, but I truly feel this place deserves props! The pizza here is exquisite fresh toppings and great crust to pizza ratio. I had 3 slices of the veggie pizza they were big and incredibly tasty! I'm a UC Riverside student doing an internship in Davis and I love to taste pizzas this is by far the best pizza I have had. *Ja'fangs in riverside is a close 2nd btw. Anyhow, I also had a piece of their tiramisu which in all honesty lacked density. Maria's Italian Kitchen has the best tiramisu I have had and naturally I compared it to that. But yea pizza is good, tiramisu not so much. And I agree w/ most ppl on here on how they need to improve their customer service. The cashier forgot I had asked for a water cup and didn't bother to offer utensils. He also did not make me feel welcomed. UPDATE: 1/14/18 A gentleman contacted me a year later to tell me that their credit card company apparently charges 20% more than the amount (any other businesses do this?!) and it should have fallen off and to take my review off. I said I would update my review. THIEVES!!!!!!!! So my first time here was yesterday and I wont be back. They stole $1.50 from me and the only way that could have happened was from them filling out the tip section I left blank (on purpose because I knew my checking account had limited funds at the time but I needed some lunch) because my food only cost $7.50 (meal deal for $7 plus the .50 fee) and my card today is debiting for $9! Im super pissed about that. I know while I was there the girl who helped me wanted to count out the register so bad! Maybe to count her tips? I have ordered takeout before from here and i typically was satisfied, although there is a clear decreasing trend. This is the first time I ordered the Greek pizza. The description is "topped with red onions, peppers, olives, feta cheese, and extra virgin olive oil." I did not have any special requests and i went to pick it up. After i got the pizza and was going to my car, someone came after me to tell me they gave me the wrong pizza. So they took it and gave me a replacement. When i got home i noticed that the pizza had 0 peppers/onions and tons of cherry tomatoes. i am guessing 1) they gave the wrong thing twice or 2) they were out of peppers and onions and substituted. In both cases I did not really get what I have ordered. I can appreciate that mistakes happen (it was a slow period) but when you are claiming that you are rectifying a mistake and make changes (in the middle of the street), you need to take responsibility. read more

I love Village Bakery for many reasons. Let me bullet point this for you... Early Morning My son is up early so we come here as early as 7am and the croissants are to die for. My son gets plain but if I'm in the mood the chocolate croissants are my absolute favorite. I usually get my husband a sticky bun or scone. He loves them both. Later in the day Love the pizza, both in store or for delivery. The chocolate lava cakes are also to die for. You really can't go wrong here. read more
