It is a big place with Indian grocery and food court. They have good amount of parking. I went here with my friends on sunday afternoon for lunch and there was a huge line to order food but it moved pretty fast. Tables were cleaned immediately and was ready for us. We got seated and they call out your name once the order is ready so it took approx 15-20mins to get our order. Overall ambiance was nice. We ordered mango lassi, Masala jeera soda, chicken kathi roll, shammi pao, dahi papdi chaat, kesar chamcham, chole bhature and lamb baida roti. I felt the dahi papdi chaat was average, mango lassi was little too sweet for my liking and other than that all the dishes were really nice. My favorite was Chicken Kathi roll. I absolutely loved it. They also have an Indian grocery store connected to the food court and all the Viks branded Indian product are sold there. Its like any other grocery store. Viks has lost its edge, horrible and taste less food. My wife got sick by eating some of their chutneys and uncooked chicken. I only had Cholay Baturey which was okay but rest of the food was taste less. On top of that very rude indian lady working behind the serving counter acting that she is doing us a favor by serving us. Chicken Tikka is not even fully cooked and I can see blood on the bone. I guess they are putting Indian touch by giving horrible food and terrible and rude customer service. Never go there again. read more

I have been here before and liked the food. I have driven all the way to east bay to eat the chat I heard so much about. There is a grocery store attached to the restaurant We had the Pani Puri. Whenever I get broken puris that don't hold the liquid it's supposed to be eaten with I feel cheated and that's exactly what happened. Look at the picture of the sad puris. Some of them were like a sieve not "sev" as served with chaats. The bhelpuri was tangy and no other flavor came through. The pakora was good but then anything fried can't go wrong. We sat in the restaurant. It's crowded and super noisy with names being called out loudly and people waiting for an empty table. The place has high ceiling and on a cold evening the place was freezing. I couldn't wait to leave. And probably not come back. One thing I do unfailingly is pick a bottle of their kasundi sauce which is mustard sauce with spices sold at the grocery store. It's great on sandwiches or as a dip. Must try. As for the restaurant the Chole bature from my previous visits has been good. They forgot to pack my order of ras malai last time and I let it go because of the rush hour. Come on, this is an Indian restaurant! Give us some substantive portions of lentil, kidney bean, chickpea, and other dishes like chana masala, rajma masala, dal tadka, dal makhani, sidhi sai bhaji, kitchari, and more. They rarely serve anything like this. Instead, they have a few "vegan" options that are mostly carbohydrates (potatoes, carrots, peas, etc.) - no protein or substantive calories. I met someone today for a business meeting. There were no plant protein options in the main dishes. I ordered a couple of side dishes, thinking one would provide a bit of plant protein. It was 95% puff pastry, 5% plant protein. After my luncheon, I was still really hungry. I had to go to another restaurant to get something substantive to eat. This place is very solid for its cafeteria-style service, its ample seating indoors and outdoors, and its reasonable prices.. But all that can't make up for not being able to eat if you want a substantive plant-based dish. Unless/Until they significantly improve the menu, don't come here. read more

We used to come here all the time in the early 2000s when this was one of the only indian restaurants around. Now, the quality has definitely gone down and the prices have skyrocketed. I do think it is expensive for what it is and the flavor isn't authentic. It has limited parking as well so get there early or you might be circling around. I can't believe that it took me this long to finally try Vik's Chaat and it was thanks to friend's from my high school/college day's that got together and caught up here. I knew San Jose had the staple Indian spots, but this place in Berkeley definitely holds its own. I love the casual, cafeteria vibe at this spot. It doesn't appear to be much but I appreciate being able to just relax and order food as I want, when I want. There are a variety of vegan options which are clearly marked on the menu. We got to try the Dosa (extremely flaky and delicious) and some of their Puri Puri. I definitely enjoyed the different chutneys that came with each dish and being able to rip, tear, and enjoy all these wonderful snacks. It's easy to over order so definitely only get what you know you can eat. I did end up asking a staff member if their mango lassi could be made vegan. For some reason, he told me that it was already vegan, but I confirmed with him that it contained yogurt... right? He nodded, and I said that no, the mango lassi is not vegan, my friend. *sigh* Definitely looking forward to returning another time to try more of their food. read more

I was a big fan of Vik's in its former location, so it is impossible to give less than five stars to the new configuration which is improved in every way. What was an exciting but chaotic ordering arrangement is now a clear set of choices and food pickup is in a separate part of the room which reduces jostling. Plenty of parking and seating both indoor and out. The store is now integrated with the cafe instead of being an akwardly separate enterprise. Also, food. We had a fish curry thali, lamb biryani and paratha to go and all were excellent. Mainstream but well balanced spicing with a good assortment of accompanying breads, chole, raita and chutney for my thali. Ordering paratha to go wasn't the greatest idea but the kids devoured it at home. By the way, if you want to make this at home grab some atta (Indian whole wheat flour) in the market. read more

Visited Vik's chat again to give it a try after we had bad first experience and now we are convinced not to ever come back. Don't get misled from the reviews and the crowd that you see in the restaurant. Most of the customers are non-Indians and there is no restaurant in the vicinity. Overpriced and very ordinary food. It's a special day when I get to go to Vik's. I always look forward to going when I'm passing through Berkeley, and make a point to stop there. The menu is wildly expansive and everything I've tried I have loved. I recommend the lamb biryani, pani puri, mango lassi, rose falooda, and so many more than I can't remember. After we attended a kid's birthday party, my husband felt like having Chole Bhatura (Garbanzos with puffed bread). We asked our friends to join us but they politely declined. She said choose another place. I did eat here before but that was years ago. Well, the guy had his cravings for a few days so let him have his wish. The chicken dishes I liked also came with extra items I didn't care for. So I chose 2 Samosas with chutney and mint sauce. My Samosas were gigantic, I could have settled for just one. We ordered mixed vegetable pakoras at Viks Chaat, but they were spoiled, and we found thread-like strands in the middle when we split them. It was horrible to see. My dad (a senior) informed the person at the billing section with concern, but he was rude. He said, "If you don't like it, throw it away or get a refund. Don't complain about the food." He also told my dad, "You are so funny." This is disrespectful behavior, and I am really concerned about the quality of their food. My kids had two bites, and I am really worried about them. This is the kind of place where I go hoping for an awesome experience because you see a diverse non-desi crowd and come back disappointed because it's not good. The restaurant is behind an Indian store and has a dhaba like vibe. It's crowded and you have to wait for your name to be called so you really hope that food is good. But it's ready bad. It looks very Indian but it's the kind of Indian place with colorful vibrant food but terrible taste. The only decent thing in the menu was cholle bhature. Here's my kid's take: Hi! Ok so the vibe of this place isn't that great.I love the outside vibe and then you go into the store which is a pretty nice Indian store, but then you go into the restaurant which honestly gives like real in India vibes which gave it a big boost in my opinion otherwise I wouldn't have liked it I think. Heard so many recommendations to come here and finally decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint!!! I was a bit intimated at first since I didn't know much about authentic Indian dishes, but the cashier practically ordered everything for us and it was absolutely amazing. The place is more of a cafeteria takeout style where you order in the front and pick up your food while grabbing your own table. However, we didn't mind it and liked how quick of a service everything was. Definitely recommend for a quick lunch break. My personal favorites Dahi Bhatata Puri and the Cholle Bhature! The Dahi Batata Puri was a must-get, a cold savory dish with a bit of crunchiness. The Cholle Bhature is like a huge fried piece of bread that is so fluffy and dipped with different savory sauces. One of the best Indian spots I've found in a while! We arrived around 5pm on a Tuesday and there was only a few people ahead of us! We received our food ~5 minutes after ordering, so quick! Everything was so flavorful and actually had a good spicy kick to it! The samosa's were really crispy, flavorful, and the cholle was cooked perfectly. The Tandoori Chicken was moist and all the condiments it went with paired perfectly. My only complaint is that I whisk they included more chapati. We went here on the recommendation of a friend. Apparently it's famous in Berkeley. It was a quite foreign experience which was exciting. We did not know what to order and just tried a few things which were pretty good. Aloo Tikki Cholle - potato patties and chickpea curry, not a big hit Mixed Veggie Pakoras - I was expecting them to be much better than the ones at Google but they were about the same except spicier and cooked more (I would argue overcooked) Veg Kathi - roll with spiced mix veg stuffing. I liked this the best. However the service was probably the worst I've ever had in the Bay Area. No one would make eye contact with me and made me feel like they'd rather I leave. But overall I'm glad we went just to experience this local legend. read more

What? I used to always have mixed reviews whenever visiting viks but never like the experience I just had last weekend... First of all I don't like feeling back to India this way at all. It is loud, messy and bathrooms are just dirty :( Food is simply terrible if I may say so. We are puri lovers. After living a total of 9 monsoons in Mumbai and having amazing stree food chaat every week, this was a total disgrace. If the Mumbai chaat wala would come to viks chaat he wouldn't believe the food served is indeed Indian. Dahi puri and sev puri were terrible. The tamarind sauce was extremely sweet and also bitter and just so much of it there was nothing else you could taste but that. I did let the counter guys making the food know that it was too sweet. Bhel puri was inedible so we couldn't eat it at all and unfortunately had to waste it. Vada pav was probably the only decent thing I could swallow. If we ever come again to eat it would probably be for the chole that looked good. The grocery section is decent and I like that we found some organic options but sad that is so limited with so much variety now in India that could make its way here. Totally disappointed. Vik's is located in an industrial area. It can be a little confusing figuring out where to go and order. If you walk in on one side, you'll find yourself walking through a market (which you can still access the Vik's Chaat by walking through). If you happen to walk in on the other side, the door will lead you right to where you need to order. You order, then wait for your name to be called across from where you ordered your food. There is indoor seating as well as a lot of outdoor seating in the parking area. We tried Samosas, Dosa, Lamb Biryani, and Cholle Bhature. The Biryani was ok, but wasn't anything special and I wouldn't order it again. My favorite of the items was the Dosa and the Cholle Bhature. It was fresh and warm. The behl puri is my absolute favorite. The sweetness, spiciness, and texture is like nothing else. I like getting the puffed rice separately from the sauce for an added crunch.
