It's been a while since I've been here but decided to bring my mom for an early Mother's Day brunch and was quite disappointed. Like many places, they are short staffed. We found out the waitress for our table was actually the bartender. We had a reservation but had to wait a few for an open table. The table we were seated at was very wobbly along with a very slippery floor. Not sure if they mopped the floor with Cooking oil or what. The brunch menu is limited but I didn't mind, makes for easier decisions. I ordered the French Toast which came with eggs and I added bacon ($6 for 3 strips of bacon, omg!). Didnt take long for the food to come so I don't know if my food was old or what but considering the short wait time and the fact that both my bacon and eggs appeared to be overcooked leaves me curious. The french toast was okay, nothing too fancy. The restrooms could have been cleaned better. Whoever cleaned did a subpar job, especially for it to be so early in the day. So maybe it was just the day that I went because I've heard rave reviews about this place. I was excited to finally get to try it. Upon arriving, I was sat near the door, which was totally fine. Had a reservation on a Thursday but really no need as it was only two or three other tables in the restaurant the layout from what I could see was pretty simple tables and a bar. The main entrance has you walking directly into the seating area there's no separation of entryway, so an awkward welcome experience. The lady who assisted me was very nice. I did find out that she normally does not work for front of the house so the service probably was a little bit different than what you normally see. I ordered the deviled eggs and then the snapper fish. The deviled eggs came out not so great to me. They tasted very stale almost like if they had sat in the fridge overnight, where the yolks had kind of absorbed some of the flavor, the egg was overcooked so I tried one and then I did not eat the remaining two and thankfully the restaurant was kind enough to take that off of my total bill. The snapper was very flavorful and had a great crust on the outside unfortunately was also overdone with the middle of the fish, kind of being rubbery to eat a little and a bit more firm than I would like, so maybe it could've been the type of fish. However, the outside had a wonderful flavor and a great crust to it. Not sure I'd go back or recommend. Unless it's for drinks. The drink was amazing. Maybe the best part of the meal. read more

We got so lucky we were able to reserve a table 15 minutes before a time slot, which was very nice. Staff was very nice and quick to get and bring out our order. The place is nicely decorated and dim, very intimate, unless you're sitting right next to people which is fine but maybe not for a date. Everything was going so well. I visited Victory East in downtown Austin back in October to celebrate my birthday. Overall, the experience was solid, with some standout dishes and a few misses that brought the rating to three stars. The food was mostly good, with a couple of highlights. The oxtail mac & cheese was excellent -- rich, flavorful, and absolutely the star of the table. We also tried the wings, which were enjoyable, and a deviled egg topped with shrimp that was perfectly seasoned -- honestly, I could eat that shrimp all day. My friend ordered a few different items as well and enjoyed what he tried. There were a few things that fell short. I ordered a blackberry cocktail (can't recall the exact name), and the smoky note from the alcohol used threw off the balance for me. I also ordered a side of brussels sprouts, which was disappointingly small and much harder than expected -- I couldn't even tell if they'd been properly pan-seared. Service was friendly throughout, though we did experience a longer-than-anticipated wait toward the end of the meal, which slightly impacted the overall flow of the night. All in all, Victory East has some really strong dishes and potential, but a few inconsistencies kept it from being a higher rating. Sometimes you can go to a place several times and then you rethink your vision of the place. This happened on Friday night. My leadership cohort was meeting at Victory East (formerly Victory Grill) for happy hour. Within the same location is a Speak Easy (Busy Signal) at the back of the building. As I was taking pictures of the mural inside, the hostess told me that everyone in that mural had played or sang at Victory East. These artists where a part of the Chitlin' Circuit, such as legendary artists like Billie Holiday, James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, B.B. King, and Etta James. Wow! I knew Victory East had historical significance; however, I did not know the ties ran so deep and wide. According to the hostess Victory East was originally created as a safe space for African American soldiers returning from World War II where they could freely drink, dance and eat in then segregated South. After my talk with the hostess, I had a new appreciation for Victory East. Our cohort had drinks (lemon drop, margaritas, mojitos) and food (fried chicken wings, fried catfish, mac n cheese, salad and jerk chicken sliders). One the highlights of visiting Victory East is its beverages. For cocktails, their mixologists combine the perfect amount of alcohol and other ingredients. The Lemon Drop martini was superbly made. The food was all 5+/5...perfectly seasoned and cooked flawlessly. Service was at the next level. We had two servers frequently asking if we needed anything and removing dishes from our table. They both were very attentive. Victory East is a vibe. You are instantly transported to a different place and time. The restaurant / bar is dimly lit with dark walls giving a romantic ambiance. This is an historic Austin venue, named in honor of V day (WWII), and was established as a place for African American community, including dining and live music. Today, is pay homage to it's roots with a beautiful mural showcasing numerous musicians who have graced the stage. I wish it was taken off the grill 2 minutes before. But it was still great. The Mac and cheese was fine, it was just regular Mac. And the Brussel sprouts were amazing. They have a little sweetness and saltiness from the bacon. My husband said the first time he went his experience was better, but I thought this was great, and I would love to come back. Honestly, my rating is a 2.5 1. I must give a shout out to the hostess who answered my call. I wanted to get a feel about seating and parking. She gave me detailed instructions. Also when we came in, even though she already had a table ready, she accommodated my (extra) request to be seated at a booth. 2. It took about 20 more mins for the server to come take our appetizer orders. At that point the hostess tried to take our menus and we hadn't even ordered entrees. Reserved a few tables for a friend birthday at 5:30pm and the food didn't come out until 6:30pm and then they told us we had to leave at 7:15pm because of another reservation and didn't even bring the dessert. I have a mixed review about this place because I like it BUT there were a lot of things that went wrong. Before I get into it, I will say the location is a little tricky for parking so I HIGHLY suggest Uber/Lyft. Luckily it was a week day so we found street parking in a neighborhood with not so far of a walk. Shortly after we sat down it began to get busy and that's when things started to go down hill. Firstly our waiter easily became overwhelmed as she was the only one working all the tables since two of the other waiters called off. We ordered our food at 8:10 and did not get it until after 9pm. Since we ordered appetizers we had to check in with her twice on the order and she had forgot to put it separate from the food so when we finally got our food everything came at the same time. The food is a mixed review because only certain items were good. Firstly DO NOT order the grilled fish, cabbage, or the seasoned rice. 100000000% disgusting! However, the oxtail, fried chicken, Mac and Brussels sprouts were good. Nothing was amazing but at least the other items were eatable. Due to the lack of service and the longgggg wait, the manager offered us either a free drink or dessert so that was nice. Now for the speakeasy that's there, it's the main attraction. There is an entrance by going through the restaurant (which causes lots of foot traffic) or through the outside. We were there on a Thursday and every Thursday they do karaoke (free shot if you sing) and I will say it was a vibe. The layout was great, not too many people but just enough to have a good time. I highly suggest checking the lounge out after you eat, especially if it's a Thursday. FYI the kitchen serves the same food in both places so you don't have to eat at the restaurant, you can go straight to the lounge. read more

I made a reservation for 6:30pm last night. Our waiter, Sara came right away to take our drink order, but unfortunately everything fell off after this. It seemed like every drink my table tried to order, y'all were out of. When we finally got our drink order in, we waited about 15-20 minutes before Sara came up to our table again (without any drinks in hand). She seemed to be chatting with other tables for much longer than needed - acceptable if the restaurant is slow, but the space was quickly filling up - where is the sense of urgency if you're trying to flip tables and make money? One table sat down next to us and was not greeted for 10 minutes, and they left frustrated. We were not far behind and ended up walking out after only being served water for the 50 minutes that we were there. After being recommended this spot by numerous people I was extremely disappointed in our service tonight. I wanted to be patient and wait but only being served water for almost the first hour after sitting down was unacceptable. I can tell this restaurant is not managed very well -- you need to have more people on the clock for busy nights. And from other reviews I've read I am clearly not alone here. I will say, the food looked great though from what I saw, but please tighten up with service. Also, the music was WAY TOO LOUD for a dining room. read more
